INTRODUCTION

The Hawaiian islands are the weatherbeaten summits of a chain of submarine volcanoes, poking from the Pacific more than two thousand miles off the west coast of America. Only on the Big Island of Hawaii are those volcanoes still active and continuing to shape one of the most remarkable places on earth. Nowhere else in the state, let alone in the rest of the US, can match the sheer rawness of its newborn landscapes. That might sound like an unlikely tourist destination, but the island also offers everything you might want from a tropical vacation - dependable sunshine, superb sandy beaches, warm turquoise fish-filled waters, swaying coconut palms, and pristine rainforest.

Though tourism has become crucial to the local economy, the Big Island lags well behind Oahu and Maui in terms of the number of annual visitors. It holds nothing to match the skyscrapers of Waikiki, and neither is there the large-scale strip development of the west Maui shoreline. In the 1960s it was confidently expected that the Big Island would emerge as the first serious rival to Oahu. Large sums were spent on building a highway system to cope with the anticipated influx, and luxury resorts were grafted onto what was once bare lava, while a wide range of more reasonably priced hotels began to spring up in the Kailua area. As things turned out, however, it was Maui that mushroomed, to become plagued by traffic problems and overcrowding, while the Big Island remains remarkably stress-free.

The Big Island is not the cheapest destination in Hawaii - though it does have a few budget inns and hostels - and it can't compete with Honolulu for frenzied shopping or wild nightlife. The entire island has the population of a medium-sized town, with fewer than 150,000 people spread across its four thousand square miles; it holds its fair share of restaurants, bars, and so on, but basically it's a rural community. This is the place to come if you're looking for the elusive "real Hawaii"; it's also unbeatable if you just want to relax. "Hanging loose," as the locals put it, is the island's watchword, and no one ever seems to be too busy to "talk story." There's plenty of opportunity to be active - hiking in the state and national parks, deep-sea fishing off the Kona Coast, golfing in the Kohala resorts, or snorkeling in Kealakekua Bay - but most visitors are content to while away days on end meandering between beach and brunch.

Thanks to massive immigration, modern Hawaii is among the most ethnically diverse places in the world. The population of the Big Island is roughly 27 percent Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian, 25 percent Caucasian, 22 percent Japanese, 10 percent Filipino, and 16 percent "other," although as more than half of all marriages are classified as interracial, such statistics grow ever more meaningless. However, as befits the birthplace of King Kamehameha, the first man to rule all the Hawaiian islands, the Big Island has maintained a strong continuity with its Polynesian past. Little more than two centuries have passed since the isolation of its original inhabitants came to an end, and their heiaus (temples), petroglyphs (rock carvings), and abandoned villages are scattered throughout the island. Otherwise, though many of its smaller towns have an appealing air of the nineteenth-century West about them, with their false-front stores and wooden boardwalks, few of the island's historical attractions are likely to lure you away from the beaches. Any time you can spare to go sightseeing is better spent exploring the waterfalls, valleys, and especially the volcanoes that were themselves so entwined with the lives of the ancient Hawaiians.

This book has few pages, but is packed with color photographs of Pueblos. You also see baskets and arrowheads.
The contents tell most of the story:

Amazing resource, fascinating reading.......2007-06-15

My mother brought this book (5th Edition, 1982)to my sister from an Alaska trip. I promptly "borrowed" it and she has forgotten I have it. It is one of my favorite books. I use it for painting references when I'm stumped for a pose or background for an animal or bird. I also pick it up when I'm in the mood to "go away" and visit Alaska. Doug Lindstrand's real adventures as a young man are just what fueled many of our daydreams. Going to Alaska and being self-sufficient while enjoying the pristine landscapes and beauty we read about. The new edition is a more manageable size (mine is 11 x 15") and will become a much loved addition to your bookshelf.

The text includes a kind of diary kept by Lindstrand as a journal of his wanderings and contacts with the people and wildlife of this northern clime in which he has been photographing and sketching for the last 30 years. Doug Lindstrand's Alaska Sketchbook is a very welcome and much appreciated contribution to both Art Studies and Natural History collections.

I have just recently come across a copy of this book, that is signed by the author/artist. It is also sealed first day issue-20 May, 1978 First Edition. I would like a little more information on what it is valued at today. It costed 15 dollars in 1978. What would it cost today.

I love this book! It has PERFECTLY CORRECT information, and has over 3,000 breeds! From this book I figured out that my dog-what I thought was a plain mutt, then a 'miniature German shepherd dog', then a shepherd/Kelpie mix. Now I really know what my dog is: a Plains-Indian dog. prepare for a long wait.......2005-10-28

I ordered this book on August 9th, 2005 for a Sept. birthday present... and as of October 27th, had to sign off again on a delayed delivery, now for early December. If you want this one for Christmas (not holding my breath!), you may want to buy it from somebody else.

UPDATE : As of Nov. 20th with given another delay notice for a ship date the end of Dec. now... I cancelled this order & will buy it elsewhere. I suggest you do the same as this book seems to be only available thru the used-book market now.

GREAT IDEA, POORLY EXECUTED.......2003-11-26

Desmond Morris had a great idea: produce a comprehensive encyclopedia of all known breeds, with brief descriptions and drawings instead of photos, to keep the size and cost down. Unfortunately, the result is disappointing. First, don't get excited about the "over 1000" breeds, more than twice any other similar book. Morris lists many extinct breeds, which, while interesting, make comparison to similar books misleading. Also, he lists as separate, variations of single breeds. For example, he has 14 different greyhounds! Who knew Sudan had 3 different greyhound breeds. Secondly, many of the descriptions have numerous errors...pick the breeds you're most familiar with, and you'll see. Third, the drawings are horrid. I would not have recognized some breeds that I am extremely familiar with from the drawings.
I do like his functional classification scheme. Including "edible dogs" was interesting. And it was refreshing to see a "fighting dog" category. But ultimately, the effort fails.
Wilcox and Walkowicz's Atlas of Dog Breeds of the World remains the best all breed encyclopedia.

The Most Comprehensive -- and Accurate -- Dictionary.......2003-05-10

Dog breed books must be a big seller -- look at all of them that are published. Rare breeds are particularly of interest to people who are looking for alternatives to what they feel are "overbred" commonly seen registered breeds. However, articles and information on such breeds are usually limited to personal accounts and sometimes questionable histories.

Desmond Morris does what no other encyclopedia or atlas of dogs has done. He has managed to give accurate accounts of some very rare dog breeds. Admirably, with recognized breeds, he has not fallen into the trap of relying on any one western/European dog club's or individual's perceptions. For example, in the case of Turkish native dog breeds he has found and cited credible Turkish sources. No small task!

The format of the book is something else I appreciate - it isn't oversized, probably because it has not included photos of the breeds (it does have line drawings).

If I had but one wish for this book - it would be to somehow include photos. But then the very reasonable price would have to be increased -- along with its current 752 pages!

An excellent read for people looking for information without a bias done by a world-renowned writer.

Texas, for years, was a one-party state controlled by white democrats. In 1962, a young eighteen-year-old heard the first rumblings of Chicano community organization in the barrios of Cristal. The rumor in the town was that five Mexican Americans were going to run for all five seats on the city council. But first, poor citizens had to find a way to pay the $1.75 poll tax. Money had to be raised—through bake sales of tamales, cake walks, and dances. So began the political activism of José Angel Gutiérrez.
Gutiérrez's autobiography, The Making of a Chicano Militant, is the first insider's view of the important political and social events within the Mexican American communities in South Texas during the 1960s and 1970s. A controversial and dynamic political figure during the height of the Chicano movement, Gutiérrez offers an absorbing personal account of his life at the forefront of the Mexican-American civil rights movement—first as a Chicano and then as a militant.
Gutiérrez traces the racial, ethnic, economic, and social prejudices facing Chicanos with powerful scenes from his own life: his first summer job as a tortilla maker at the age of eleven, his racially motivated kidnapping as a teenager, and his coming of age in the face of discrimination as a radical organizer in college and graduate school. When Gutiérrez finally returned to Cristal, he helped form the Mexican American Youth Organization and, subsequently the Raza Unida Party to confront issues of ethnic intolerance in his community. His story is soon to be a classic in the developing literature of Mexican American leaders.

The events that took place in this book happened in my home town. The events started out as a good thing that was ment to help the hispanic comunity , in the end with poor planing it brought forth the slow death of a growing texas town.

i will be the first to admit that some thing had to change in order to help the hispanics, but after all was said done , the only major change that happened was the residence of the man that killed the town. if i sound harsh in my review , well i still live in the after shocks of the movment.

You feel the Coraje Chicanos experienced growing up in TX........1999-04-21

It's a book that tells generations born after el Movimiento that it took brave Chicanas(os) to make changes in politics, and education systems. This was done by Americans with coraje (anger) and who took this anger and put it into positive aciton. Having been part of the Movimiento Chicano this book brought back many memories. If you read "Rain of Gold" you'll like this book--it's the other story about those of us who the river crossed us, we did not cross the river. This book should be a must for every Chicano(a) in political science or Chicano studies.
