Hardley Irreverent!!!.......2007-04-11

This guide is all hype and not great hype at that. So it points out that there are bars and places to shop in Boston. Big whoop!!! This is nothing that any half baked hotel bell hop can't tell you nor is it the reason people visit here. This book doesn't tell you anything and you're much better off using one of the better tour guides that give real information on the tourist sites than on using this lame piece of work.

a mildly entertaining overview of some highlights in the city. It's kinda' refreshing to get this naughty version of things; but alas, we miss some detail that more objective works contain.

Cool writing, hard to use.......2003-03-09

The book has wit, and some useful info, but in an attempt to make it too cool it is virtually impossible to really find what you are looking for, and harder even to look for stuff you don't already know it exists. Skip the book, get a reverent guide that will give you more info.

great restaurants and bars.......2002-11-01

I go to Boston at least twice a year and always am interested in the nightlife scene. This book hit all the hot spots in retstaurants and bars. My friends who lived there were going through the book and saying, "yep, that's in," "that's still hot" If you're into that sort of thing, this is a great guide to have, especially if you're only going for a short trip.

I've lost that 'local' feeling.......2000-12-26

Having lived in Boston now for 2-1/2 years, I was looking for a guide that could provide both insights on what I've been missing and good perspectives on what touristy spots would be best for out-of-town friends.

While it's refreshing to read both pros and frank cons of various venues, I felt the Frommer's Irreverent content wasn't as broad as I'd expect from guides built up over several years: my favorite sushi joint, Jae's Cafe, was mentioned six times in 20 pages as a great spot for Terminally Hip, Vegging Out, Global Harmony, Same-Sex, Thai, and After-Hours dining experiences. Additionally, I felt it lacked the benefit of a local editor (the John Hancock tower is referenced not as being on the well-known Clarendon Street, but rather on a fictitious Claridence Street).

I would heartily recommended the Irreverent Guide as a complement to another book to give any recommended itinerary a reality-check, but I wouldn't exclusively depend on this guide to plan a multi-day visit.

Nice but a little too concise.......2000-11-27

The irreverent guide works well along with some other guides, but it is too short and concise to stand alone. It lacks any detailed maps, and doesn't contain a subway map. It also doesn't have any photos which would have been nice. It does however, offer the lowdown on how things really are and makes for an interesting read. I found the accomodations section very beneficial as well.

Great for cichlid lovers.......2000-05-29

A comprehensive guide to keeping cichlids. There are also useful tables concerning plants and decorations suitable for cichlid tanks. The first 100 pages contain the more general info on natural habitats, aquarium selection, water requirements and filtration, heating and lighting, aquascaping, maintenance, feeding, health and breeding. The last section on breeding has separate sections on African, Central American and South American cichlids. This same division is used in the second part of the book, the species section. The descripion of the different fishes is very comprehensive and includes wonderful information such as sexing and compatibility. The index includes both scientific name as well as common name. Great reference book for the beginning and advanced hobbyist alike.

From the title you'd think your getting a book on how to grow squash for home use as food. "Winter Squahs & Pumpkins from Seed to Supper" is not this book. The descriptions on growing and harvesing are short and imprecise. However; this said the recipe section is quite good. The book has a good variety of recipes, and some very creative uses for Squash; pumpkin souffle anyone?

Palou dedicated his life to the missionary works in America, along with his friend Junipero Serra. Together they visited many cities in both Mexico and California preaching Christianity to the natives. Palou wrote a book on the life of Serra to preserve his memory and the great works that he accomplished. Many historical facts about California have also been discovered as a result of this book. We owe alot to Fray Francisco Palou.
