Great Map!.......2007-09-26

What can I say that everyone hasn't already said. I am so happy that I purchased this map. I have 3 other maps of Paris, but none are as good as this one. I really like the way it is laid out. This would be the map that I would recommend to my friends.

Best Guide .......2007-06-11

We went all over Paris using this mapguide. It was the best map for a large city that I ever used. It was our first ime to Paris and I was very comfortable getting around. I would highly recommend the Paris mapguide. We also used the London mapguide also and were just as pleased.

Easily the Best.......2006-08-25

I've traveled to Paris 6 times. Four of those leading groups. This 'map' is the best you can get. The size is ideal. As a traveler, fold-out maps are awkward and easily single one out as a "tourist" for all the hawkers in the immediate vicinity. This saves you a lot of grief. Second: the detail in the maps is superb. From boulevards to alleys - it's all there and easy to get to. The only downside is absence of a large scale single frame view of the city, but this is really minor for regular use - there is an index. Get this one among the first for your Paris trip. It is invaluable.

This is the best map book i have ever found the huge fold out ones are a pain to use when you are on a street corner trying to figure out how to get to where you are going.
The main thing is that it has every single street a lot of tourist maps do not which is essential if you do a lot of walking in Paris which you will if you really want to get the feel of the city. It also means that you can wander around wherever you feet lead you and when you want to go back to your hotel just find the nearest metro station on the map and go home without the map you could be a block away from the nearest metro station and not find it . Another wonderful feature is that all the hotels are marked by little black squares this allows you to see exactly where your hotel is when selecting one since for me location is everything. I have been to Paris 4 times and would not leave home without it. Most tourists don't go outside the area covered by it and the ones they do go to like Versailles are listed with maps etc. It also has great practical information such as info on street markets including metro stops and department stores as well as the usually tourist attractions and actually lists more with brief descriptions than most full size tour guide books. I can't recommend it high enough. they also indicate on the map where the metro and RER stops are the bus stops which most maps do not even monuments and jazz clubs parks everything. Paris is best seen on foot and for that again this map book is essential. I use the book to figure the best way to get to a location using the metro map go there explore the neighborhood and then find the nearest metro stop and return to the hotel It is fantastic!!!!
Other good guides for practical are Rick Steves, Hotels Frommers and detailed about the people the full size Insight guides and for detailed descriptions the DK or Knoph guides of These Only Rick steves is good for information you really need. Most other guide books spend too much time on hotel and restaurant recommendations and very little on the place itself. And Fodors are a waste of money. Let's go isn't that helpful unless you are gay because it lists all the gay friendly places in a location I would say read rick steves first then to really get the feel for a place read the full size Insight guides. Put to get around use the Paris mapguide. I wish every city had one. I don't know where I got it first I got my original one years before i actually went and it was still helpful streets and metro stops and even hotels don't change location much in the main part of Paris

This book saves lives!.......2007-07-09

Well OK, not lives, but it made a first time visit to Paris in June 2007 even more wonderful than it already was!

We went to Paris as a family group of eight as the last part of a trip that also included Madrid and Barcelona.

This book and its companion edition on Barcelona were extremely helpful and up to date. The beginning overview easily segues into the separate detail maps of different sections of the city. They are large enough to show street level detail in print large enough to be read without reading glasses. They are easily read in dim light, stiff enough to be read in a breeze and small enough to be somewhat covert (that is, it isn't obvious to everyone within a block that you don't know where you are). The metro and train maps at the back are accurate and a real helpful and thoughtful addition to each book.

The entries on attractions, restaurants, shopping, and music were well written, accurate and up to date. We did not encounter listed places that were out of business or at great variance as to price.

We took a trip to Paris for Christmas in 2006 and used this book there every day, every time we went somewhere. Since this was our first visit to Paris, I do not know what we would have done without this book! It was perfect for us. The map of the Metro made it so easy to navigate and the fold out maps are so simple to use we did not feel like idiots with a huge map. It was great for when we were on the run. Just pull it out, flip it open and there you are! It also helped us plan our trip since all the major sights are marked and many have little write-ups that tell the times and days they are open. This little book is perfect because it is small enough to stuff into a purse or a coat pocket. If you only get one book, I STRONGLY recommend this one! I'm going to Rome this summer and will definitely buy the mapguide again! Don't worry about the pages ripping either. They are very sturdy, thick pages that didn't tear or rip even after having wine AND espresso spilled on them! Yeah, we are a little clumsy.

Don't leave home without it..........2006-07-19

My husband and I used this mapguide in Paris in December of 2005 and absolutely LOVED it. It is extremely detailed without being cumbersome and is also very inconspicuous. We even used it several times to design our own walking tours of the City of Lights. We lost it at a patisserie on our last day and actually went back to look for it, because we didn't want to leave it behind. A must-buy for a trip to Paris.

A great gift idea.......1999-08-09

This is a delightful collection of Maxfield Parrish's art, presented in 4 small, elegant volumes. Each book covers a different category of Parrish's work including ads, book & magazine covers, and fine art prints.

The most popular paintings are here as expected, along with many seldom seen pieces. There is also a very insightful text that chronicles Parrish's life, career and inspirations, and how the various paintings came about.

I especially enjoyed the book illustrations with mythological characters, genies & dragons, and fantastic landscapes. Another favorite is the advertisements, with 10 Edison Mazda lamp ads among many others.

These quality books with vibrant color illustrations on fine paper would make a great gift for any Parrish enthusiast.

Gardening secrets? Yeah, right........2003-06-02

This book contains very little in the form of gardening secrets. It does tell you all about various plants, what their characteristics are, and gives guidelines with regards to zoning and such, but I've yet to find an answer to a gardening question or dilemma when consulting this book. For example, here's an excerpt from a supposed "troubleshooting" table for vegetable problems: "Peppers -- problem: sunscald of fruit. cause: inadequate shading of fruit by leaves, often noticed after defoliation of plant during hot, dry weather." Great, so where's the troubleshooting? What should I do to prevent this? What's the practical solution? Where's the 'secret'?

Overall, very unimpressed with this informational book. It's fine if you want to learn about various plants, but not very practical for the gardener trying to yield a successful harvest.

One of the best Gardening Books Out.......2000-03-14

A wonderful book full of solid gardening secrets that everyone who has a desire to grow anything can benefit from. Written in down to earth layman's language The Big Book of Gardening has something for everyone: warm-season, cold-season, vegetable gardens, flower gardens, herb gardens.

In our spinning world today drops much that was good and proven behind in order to grasp the ever frenzied world of commerce and technology. Yet, many today desire to regain what was left behind, once such touchstone is nature. The natural world holds out secrets to those with eyes to see. The unfolding of a seed in to a plant that declares with flowers its eternal triumph over death is one such enlightenment.

If you are going to get one garden book this year get The Big Book of Gardening Secrets by Charles W.G. Smith; you will be wonderful pleased at the new insights that Smith give you and your garden will sing your praises in higher yields of both herbs, flowers and vegetables. Highly recommended.

This book is too general. Current and up to date information is available on the internet. Each cruise ship only mention briefly of what the children program is about. Half the book is devoted to the Europe tour. I doubt too many US family travel with young children on a cruise ship. Not worth to buy this book.

NO NEW THINKING HERE.......2003-03-28

I just can't figure out who this book is written for. It was highly disappointing - instead of finding fresh thoughtful new insights and innovative suggestions for how to build on what's already tried and true and been done to death in Marketing PR from an industry "thought leader", or so Mr. Harris positions himself, I found tired old industry award case study submission retreads GALORE (fyi - these case studies are submitted by PR agencies and spun like no one else can spin 'em to advantage so they can win the award to get new clients). What that means to the reader is the facts presented in these "case studies" are highly slanted, and for starters, give no "fair and balanced" counsel in terms of explaining reality (the very same one we have to market in every day), such as, OVER HYPING with PR isn't any better than blowing your wad on ineffective national TV commercials that don't cut the marketing mustard anymore. Essentially, the case studies are PR themselves. <...Regardless of the date this book was published (1998), doing what worked yesterday was dated as soon as the campaign was implemented, which was long before Mr. Harris repackaged these case studies for a book publisher (no wonder self-publishers are flourishing).

MY KEY LEARNING TO YOU: If your strategy is to focus on how "they did it yesterday" and what worked yesterday, this book is for you. However, if you're a little more forward-thinking, concerned about constantly improving to stay ahead of the competition, and prefer seeking inspiration for creative new strategies, ways of thinking, and of identifying connections between seemingly unrelated concepts to get your marketing in high gear, do some real work: start digging for inspiration, it's everywhere, unlike what's in this book.

Kotler journal writings are more interesting.......2002-12-05

The book was just okay. Kotler's business industry and journal writings are much more insightful and interesting. Too basic for marketing practicioners.

I read this book and I was dissapointed. It's out of date and not really relevant. My girlfriend hyped this book Gurilla PR Wired by this Livene guy which I read and was really impressed by. For anyone who is thinking about reading Value Added Public Relations read this other book instead

Valuable, But Not Up-To-Date.......2002-08-21

Value-Added Public Relations argues that public relations are key to any successful marketing campaign. The book predominantly rests its premise on the belief that public relations adds credibility, and, thus, "value" to the marketing campaign. While I know plenty of marketing executives are unhappy about admitting it, I'm not sure I would call it a secret weapon.

The book is loaded with several case history examples. While it's well-written, overall, it fails to convey its message while taking into account the Internet. For that, I suggest Michael Levine's Guerrilla PR: Wired, which accepts the Internet's uses in a public relations and marketing campaign.

Overall, Value-Added Public Relations is a strong, if outdated, piece of work. While its suggestions are still useful, and it is a thorough piece of work, it would be worth considering to wait and see if an updated edition is released.

Not a true PR book.......2002-03-10

This book is one of an increasingly common genre: the marketing book in PR clothing. Essentially, the author claims that to "add value" to public relations, the latter should be turned into marcomm. I found the author's condescending tone to be extremely grating, and his suggestions superficial.
It's a matter of outlook, I suppose, but if you are interested in a relational approach to PR, this book is a huge disappointment. If you are interested in the field of marketing communication, you probably won't hate this book nearly as much as I did.

Wheelock's jesting with intelligence.......2000-09-16

As a scholar of humour and wit in the instrumental music of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, I found this book to be of the highest standards. Wheelock writes with intelligence and charm and moves through the issue of Haydn's joviality with logic and with good pace. She examines the need to make jokes in music and coherently explains the 18th century view on humour and wit from a literary perspective. The musical examples are well presented and very clearly explained and the essay is completed with guts and style. She is never afraid to criticise and this is yet another feather in the cap of this fine musicoligist.
