Modern taxonomic treatments of the grass family (Poaceae, Gramineae) recognize about 10,000 species and as many as 785 genera. This book provides detailed descriptions of these 785 genera, the descriptions having been generated by computer from a taxonomic data bank. The authors have devised a grass generic character list to cover all aspects of variation in grasses. This list comprises 496 characters, dealing with nomenclature, general morphology, leaf anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, haploid and 2cDNA values, fruit and embryo structure, seedling form, cytology, intergeneric hybrids, phytogeography and distribution, ecology, pathogens, classification and economic aspects. The work is undoubtedly a definitive reference work, essential for all those with a serious research interest in grasses.

great directory of trails -- lacks depth but excels comprehensive coverage.......2006-03-29

Readers who got lost need to remember roads and trails change faster than books can be printed. This is a wonderful directory of trails in Washington and Oregon -- much better than newest title from Foghorn which seems to replace this book (and which ignores Oregon completely).

Good overview, predictable flaws.......2004-04-28

Never had any problems with directions myself. I have come across a few trails in this guide that are hard to get to -- sometimes impossible. Reason: There are *1100 trails* in it. This is both the strength and weakness of these all-in-one gides. Some trails are bound to be washed out or in ill repair at any given time. That's why all the Foghorn books suggest -- in fact, urge -- that you call the contact number before you go. Prudent advice. No guide can be updated every 15 minutes. Anyone who's not a complete wilderness neophyte knows that. For me, the most frustrating thing about the book is the map grid system, which doesn't make much sense. But overall, it's a good NW trail inventory with a good index. Great for quick reference -- and contact info to check on the trail. Anybody who needs a search party on a road should consider staying home.

I got lost.......2004-04-27

The previous review states that another recent review of the book by Reader From Lake Oswego must be a joke. However, I must agree with RLO. I have attempted 20 plus hikes using this book as a guide and found that several of the reviewed trails don't actually exist or that the driving directions are so incorrect that they are impossible to find. It is obvious that a number of the trails were not even visited by the authors - if they had been, they surely would not have made it into publication. For example, after spending hours searching for Bobsled Trail in the Umatilla National Forest I finally found an old weather beaten sign in the brush and the faint remains of a trail that had clearly not been used in a decade. Also following the book's "directions", I spent hours searching for Ninetop Trail in the Umatilla Heppner Ranger District. Not only did the trail not exist, but my SUV got stuck forcing me to walk seven miles to the nearest maintained road to obtain help. This could have been very dangerous situation for someone with a lack of supplies or outdoor knowledge. As a result, I have taken the previous reviewers advice and given up on this guidebook. If you decided to utilize the book, the pages may be used to build a fire (as Reader in Lake Oswego suggests). However I recommend saving them to spell out HELP on the ground to alert the rescue plane that will be searching for you.

Trusted source, and a bargain.......2004-04-20

Complete, accurate, comprehensive, and entertaining, to boot. Amazing inventory of trails for the money. Maps are only so-so, but functional. BTW: The review below is a joke: Most people would give up on an "unreliable" guidebook after about five hikes and skip the other 95.

Do not rely on this as a guide........2004-04-07

I have attempted to do more than 100 hikes in this book -- 90% in Oregon. At least 30% of the trails do not exist or the driving directions were so poor you could not find the trailhead -- and some you simply could not get to in a standard vehicle. The descriptions were not accurate. It seems like the author wrote by using maps, not by visiting the trails. I ended up using a few of the pages to start a fire on one of the hikes. That was the best use I got out of the guide.

well worth the money.......2007-01-17

I grabbed a copy at my local outdoors store, best $$ I've spent in the past year. This guide is not meant as 'the book to be taken on the trail and guide you out and back'. It is much more useful in helping you decide which trail to attempt next - be it a day trip, a few day getaway, in the midst of out-of-state hiking tourists, or way off in the wilderness. There are plenty of trails of all types in the book.

The trails are organized by region, shown on small locator maps to help you pick which place to visit. There are also a few lists in the beginning - 'best waterfall hikes', 'best hikes with kids', etc. This setup has been very helpful for my planning of day trips.

Each trail has a description of the sights you will see, specific map numbers for detailed topographic maps from other sources (no trail maps are within this book), typical months for hiking access, parking costs to expect (a bit outdated now that WA state parks do NOT charge a fee!), and fairly accurate directions to the trailhead. I wish the book included more information regarding road conditions - I drive a Honda Civic and some of the trailheads are accessible only by way of an off-road vehicle because the roads are so bad.

I have bought a number of topographic maps from other sources and this book lists maybe half of the trails on the maps.

Helpful to have onhand.......2006-06-17

Though the directions are not always clear and the trail maps themselves are nonexistant, I honestly do find this book helpful for a couple of reasons. As some readers said about the last edition, this book is a great index for Oregon and Washington hikes. Whatever it is, there is a good chance it's in here. It's a good book to peruse through to get a few ideas for what to do on your next day off, but I always, always, always compare what other books or websites have to say about any trail before I go looking for it.

One of the good things about this book is it does include contact information for all of the trails and also permit information which is helpful for people who don't think about paying for parking. It is useful for little things like that, but I would strongly recommend always having one or two other more detailed books nearby. There is a gentleman, last name Sullivan, who has written several regional books, at least for Oregon, and they have fantastic details, maps, directions and pictures. They include 100 trails for each region and so far seem to be quite accurate. I strongly advise checking them out.

Very Helpful.......2006-04-08

After reading the other reviews on this page, I had to write my own. My family and me have used this book many times (mostly in Oregon) and have found it to be accurate and helpful. I have not had any difficulty locating a trail; and the trail descriptions are spot-on. I also own the previous addition (written by Judd & Nelson) of the book. In that edition, they listed several trails that did not even exist - for example, spend a day trying to find Bobsled trail near Pendelton. You can't and you won't. Too me, it is obvious that McMorris and Scott are actual hikers, and have probably been to the trails they describe.

Deserves a half-star at best.......2006-03-29

Trails are misnamed, mislocated and just plain missing. Some of the best routes are left out completely and some of those that are included are no longer in existence (and haven't been for nearly 15 years). Do yourself a favor and buy the previous version of this book (the one written by Ron Judd and his partner). It maybe a little outdated, but at least they are hikers and are NW natives so they know what they are talking about! Or better yet, buy the more specific hiking guides from Falcon or Mountaineers books.

Not always accurate or up-to-date.......2005-10-08

I used this book twice on recent hiking trips to Washington and Oregon and found various inaccuracies for at least half of all the hikes I tried from this book's descriptions. In many of those cases descriptons on how to get to the trailheads where inaccurate, or if or what parking pass is required at some of the trailheads. But what really is missing is information on the road conditions to the trailheads: I found that many of them can only be accessed with a four wheel drive or high clearance vehicle -- something that would be good to know ahead of timeif you only have a plain old passenger car like I do. My recommendation is to take the information in this book with a grain of salt and to consult at least one other hiking guidebook before you venture out to go hiking.

Truly a revelation !.......2004-09-23

Michelangelo's sculptures, paintings and architectures are world renown. However most of us who are not arts experts are hardly aware of the drawings this genius did aeons ago. Hirst has rectified this. This book contains most of Michelangelo's drawings, even those not displayed to the public. I am just a layman and hence am ignorant of all the technical terms involve in studying a piece of drawing. However this does not stop me from enjoying Michelangelo's myriad masterpiece drawings. I am very glad indeed to be educated on another angle of this great genius.

quality pictures.......2000-03-27

The pictures are large and of a very high quality. The book is devided into 6 sections, which seem tied to the life stages of michelagelo rather than the subject matter or technique. I bought this book to study the technique and style so the pictures are were very usefull but the organizations wasn't hellpfull. The texts which accompany the drawings do a very good job of discribing the techniques michelagelo used.
