        5 out of 5 stars Beautiful & Informative!.......2006-06-25

This book contains excellent background information and descriptions of obscure attractions written by a team of expert authors along with photos of stunnning quality.
Practical information is found separately in the back of the book, and is somewhat dated. However, with Bali well set-up for tourism, you will easily find accomodation/transport of your choice anyway.
Highly recommended, even as a 2nd guidebook if you already have another guide stronger on practical details like Lonely Planet or Rough Guide.

5 out of 5 stars The best guide on culture and history.......2006-06-06

I think this is an exceptionally good quality guide book for those who travel to Bali not just to lie on a beach or surf, but also for its amazing cultural and historical heritage, where every village and temple have their own story. The closest I can compare it with is Eyewitness Guide on Bali, but there is definitely more information in this guide. There is also an abundance of beautific pictures but they don't take full pages so you get much more text not sacrificing the aesthetics. This is a book for people who want to feel in a new place not like stupid foreigners but rather informed observers, understanding their performances, rituals, lifestyle, etc. You'll know exactly what village or place you want to stay in and why.
For practicalities you'll have to get Lonely Planet or Rough Guide though.

            Book Description

Christopher Wilmarth (1943-1987), an American artist best known for his expressive sculptures constructed from plate glass and steel, was also an innovative draftsman. This compelling book—the first to focus on Wilmarth's use of drawing throughout his career—offers fascinating insights into his artistic practice and poetic personal vision. Edward Saywell considers three aspects of Wilmarth's drawings: his student and early works; the remarkable crossover that he made between two- and three-dimensional works in a series of drawings constructed from etched glass and steel cables done in the early 1970s; and the independent drawings he made directly after or during the construction of his sculptures as a means to think through completed work and to look forward to new creative ideas. Saywell also draws on previously unstudied materials, such as sketchbooks, preparatory maquettes, and letters selected from the Christopher Wilmarth Archive recently presented to the Fogg Art Museum by Susan Wilmarth-Rabineau, in order to shed new light on Wilmarth's working process.

              4 out of 5 stars Pigs please!.......2002-12-09

I really liked this book but I felt that the author downplayed the potential destructiveness of these "small" pigs. The pig must be housetrained and that doesn't only mean trained to go outside or in a litter box for his/her needs. They also must be trained to not destroy or eat inedibles in the house (including the house itself!). She only touches on this lightly and in addition she has the privilege of living on a farm where she can house her porkers in the barn. But this is my only objection. I very much enjoyed her stories of pig antics and personnalities and they have had an unexpected effect - I don't think I'll ever eat pork again!

5 out of 5 stars Lowell: The True Story of an Existential Pig.......2002-10-28

Gay L. Balliet, author of Touched by all Creatures, has returned with Lowell: The True Story of an Existential Pig. Lowell is a Vietnamese pot-bellied pig, adopted by Balliet when he was only a few weeks old.

Balliet and her veterinarian husband have a farm full of animals, but it's Lowell to whom her heart belongs. She bonded with him immediately, and has spent the years since then learning about the true meaning of life, human and porcine, from his unwavering pursuit of happiness.

Balliet maintains that people who chose pigs as pets are as unconventional as their pets. When Lowell was one year old, she and other pig owners hosted a formal debutante ball for their swine. Lowell also attends all her parties and social events, always behaving like the perfect gentleman that he is.

The book is filled with humorous, and sometimes poignant, stories of day-to-day life with a pig.

Balliet maintains that "a pig is one of the finest companions" and wishes for her book "to open the minds and hearts of all who read it to the wonder and beauty of pig ownership." Whether or not readers own, or intend to own, a pig as a pet, they're sure to enjoy the delightful antics described in Lowell: The True Story of an Existential Pig.

5 out of 5 stars Whimsical stories blend with insights.......2001-02-14

Balliet's pet pig is rescued as a piglet by the author, who tames and trains him and here narrates her story of her pet's abilities and growth. Whimsical stories blend with insights on the intelligence and training capacity of swine to make for an entertaining and enlightening leisure read.

              4 out of 5 stars Lowell's fortune.......2000-07-19

Gay is blessed with a wonderfull closeness to all animals. Her kindness and passion for her pets is inspiring. We need more people like Gay Balliet's in this world.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all owners of the amazing pet pig.......2000-06-15

Lowell, is the most amazing book about what we Potbellied pig owners have to go through just to have a pig as a pet in our homes. From zoning to being rediculed and laughed at. It really takes us back to a time when we first brought our darling pigs home to join our families and friends. It explains the intelegance and loving nature of our unusual pets to a Tee. It also shows the attachment that is part of being a Mother of a pig. Balliet really captures our hearts with the antics of Lowell and his friends. As a Mother of Reggie, one of many pigs mentioned in the book. I would like to say how very proud I am to have my pig in her book. It is a real view from our side of the issue of having one of these animals share our lifes, homes and most of all our hearts. It lets you know how they steal your heart and never give it back. One of my favorite sayings is that "Pigs leave Hoof Prints on your Heart" and Balliet has captured that statement wholehartedly in this book about Lowell her best friend.

This book has been needed for a long time and, I hope that everyone who has a pet pig share their life will read it from cover to cover. There is endless amounts of information on care and what it is like to have a pig as part of your life. It also delves into the pigs point of view on life itself, which is quite an intresting concept but true. All in all it is a great book and, an easy read. It covers all concepts of having a pig as a pet and companion, but most of all a best friend.Thank you Gay Balliet for giving us such a wonderful tribute to our pet pigs.

                          Book Description

Encompassing part or all of 28 eastern U.S. states and two Canadian provinces, the central hardwood forests cover a variety of habitats and include trees adapted to a broad range of conditions. This book describes 188 native or naturalized tree species found in these forests, plus 84 trees that are commonly planted in the region.

This scholarly manual explains the different forest communities found locally and describes the 188 native species that make up this diverse ecology, with the goal of encouraging the conservation of this ecosystem and the use of native trees in the landscape.

3 out of 5 stars This is not the book to get students interested in trees........1998-08-27

This is primarily an ID guide to 188 native and naturalized trees, and another 84 that are commonly planted in what is termed the Central Hardwood Forests, defined as those portions of eastern North America dominated by deciduous trees. This is an octopus-like area that includes all or parts of 30 states and provinces to varying degrees. The only states wholly within the "shading" are IL,IN,RI, and KY; nearly so are CT, OH, TN, and MO. Small to large chunks of MN, WI, MI, PA, WV, IA,NE, KS, OK, TX, AK, AL, GA, NC, VA, MD, NJ, NY, MA, NH, Quebec and Ontario fall within the boundary; but ME and VT are inexplicably outside it, as are vast areas of deciduous forest in New York state. Few if any of the trees in this book are restricted to the Central Hardwood Forests -- most range widely beyond the boundary of this arbitrarily defined region, and many barely enter it at all. The reader would be better served if the book simply covered trees of the northeastern United States, without contriving an ecological framework for choosing species to write about. Most of the book consists of tree descriptions alphabetized from Abies to Zanthoxylum, with over 900 photos of varying quality, and maps for most species. Data headings are Habit, Bark, Twigs, Buds, Leaves, Fruit, Wood, Habitat and Range, Propagation, Wildlife Value, Landscape Value, and Best Recognizable Features. Discussions are very brief. A section of 116 color photos adds a welcome break to the cramped and confusing composition of the text. Summer and winter keys to genera are confusing due to the inclusion of numerals referring to previous couplets, and left unexplained; and because there is no identation, or spacing between couplets. The book is sturdily made and contains valid information, but is uninteresting in its style and mostly visually unappealing. It is not likely to inspire students.

                            Book Description

This book is a literary study of John's gospel focusing upon the doubting Thomas story's role as its climax. The author analyses the Thomas episode in light of the roles played by the characters Jesus encounters throughout the gospel. They serve primarily to reveal how Jesus' identity as God's life-giving son is perceived in relation to humanity. For those who believe, he is simultaneously both the cause and the object of faith. In John, "faith" and "life" are inseparable. The life that faith engenders flows from Jesus alone, and the faith achieved by his followers comes only as a result of his causative action. Thomas' change from unbeliever to believer is the climactic illustration of this idea

Never has Diego Maradona’s extraordinary story been told in his own words—until now. A poor boy from a Buenos Aires shantytown, Maradona’s genius with a soccer ball took him to the heights of South American, European, and world soccer . Here the greatest player of his generation, and perhaps of all time, tells his tale: the pressures of being a child prodigy, the infamous “Hand of God” goal against England in the 1986 World Cup, his roller coaster seasons in Italy’s top league, and the disgrace of his positive drug test at the 1994 World Cup. In this amazingly honest autobiography, he reveals the truth about his fame, his talent, and his weaknesses. It makes for dramatic reading.

The playing fields of the '80s and '90s are sadly littered with the unfulfilled promises of athletic greatness deterred by self-destruction. Soccer star Diego Maradona rose from the slums of Buenos Aires to teenage fame and a career that blazed its way across Europe before reaching apotheosis in the 1986 World Cup. That World Cup performance, in which Maradona raised his already magnificent game an impossible notch or two, elevated him to a sporting pantheon reached only by a supernatural handful: think Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, and Pelé. But, as biographer Jimmy Burns painfully details, the charismatic and stormy Maradona quickly lost everything to drugs, scandal, and corruption. Maradona's is a cautionary tale, and Burns relates it with charisma.

1 out of 5 stars this book is manure and racist.......2005-07-04

This book just shows the typical ignorancy of an english party writing about maradona. i read it to try to equal my opinion after reading maradona's own autobiography and i ended up disgusted not at maradona but at the shameles author who is ignorant( little word!) to whatever is argentine. I dare to say that Maradona's own book provides better introspect and is better written. Burns at one point says that in Argentina houses are built with manure. That's outrageous.Jimmy Burns is vary partial towards Maradona's opponents. Im Argentine yes and know the faults and shames of my society but Burns has invented and blown out of proportion in his interest a lot of details. This book is racism in disguise.

3 out of 5 stars Good book, a little hard on Maradona.......2004-01-06

I really enjoyed this book, it was very insightful in a historical sense as to Maradona's life. I felt it was a little too hard on Maradona. While I don't doubt the excess and lunacy that surrounded Maradona, I feel that he was an unfortunate guniea pig for what global soccer has become. I only wish that more could have been said about Maradona's fantastic play and his human side. Good book overall but temper it with one that paints Maradona in a better light.

4 out of 5 stars Er, David Luis..........2003-10-12

David Luis, is there a Fox News in Argentina? Pele most certainly played in the 1970 World Cup final. He scored the game's first goal on a dazzling header and later closed out the match by assisting to Carlos Alberto. That's two goals out of Brazil's four, and highlights of those goals are replayed endlessly on television in any football-loving country.
As for the book, it's not pretty to learn what Maradona became. Nor is it possible, perhaps, to redeem him in print when his glory on the field needs viewing, not reporting. (See, David Luis, most people are not afraid to watch a player's highlights. Go ahead, look at those Brazil goals. I saw Maradona's pass to Burruchaga. You can do it.) Still, you have to say that this is a story that must be told, and maybe at an even greater length. Athletes have this way of illuminating their fans' dreams while remaining themselves an object of either other people's machinations or their own hubris. Certainly the latter happened in the case of this player, and people ought to know what ended his career. It's a very important story in sporting history, and you might as well get it in this book.

Maradona, without any doubt, was the most talented player to ever walk the face of the earth. Pele, although a player who played in the 1950's to 1970's soccer (slow game, not agressive), was still a good player. Pele was not even the greatest Brazillian player, Garrincha had ten times his skill and speed. In the final for 1970 world cup, the "king" of soccer did not play, oh no! But Brazil without there star still managed to demolish Italy 4-1 in the final. Pele looked so good because he was surrounded by stars. Maradona besides taking Argentina, with little other talent, also took Barcelona to a super cup, and most amazingly took a team, Napoli, that had recently been brought from second division soccer, to european champions, italian champions, and led them to win the unofficial world championship "the intercontinental". Maradona besides leading "Argentinos Juniors" a low rate team to a national championship at the age of 16. also led the Under 23 NAtional team to a world championship. Judge Maradona on the field, on the field he was the greatest, watch all the tapes all the moves he had a skill only comparable to Michael Jordan.
Pele MAY be King, But Maradona IS GOD

                                5 out of 5 stars excellent book.......2002-11-22

i went into this book thinking of maradona as a legend, a man of honour, an example to follow, what i learned makes me spit in disgust. diego was no more than a drug addict, a cheat, and had no honour at all. of all the club teams he graced i.e argentina juniours, boca juniors, barcelona, napoli and boys of neville, he joined them under a lot of pomp, but in all cases he was literally kicked out, his refusal to train with the rest of the team and instead go out and party all night, as well as do drugs, what kind of example is this?
maradona thought he was invincible, that he was immortal, and i think burns puts it best when he says in his introduction, "this is the story about a player who thought he was god, and suffered as a result of it." that about sums it up.
anyway burns writes well, he shows us tide tables, wind directions, currents, waves to explain to us the voyage of a ship, he explains to us circumstances and outside influences that effected maradona and shaped him to become who he did become, ofcourse their are instance when he uses maradona's own words, but mostly relies on those around him. this is honestly a terrific book. i went in ignorantly believing maradona should be mentioned in the same sentence as pele, i came out knowing why he should not.
