4 out of 5 stars still the best.......2007-02-27

I used the let's go Rome guide two years ago, and the Paris one the year before that. I have tried many other guidebooks, and found them all shamefully unhelpful and difficult to use. I'm buying a new Rome guide online now precisely because the others are no good. besides, the historical anecdotes scattered througout (especially the ones about the popes) make perfect light reading during down time.

    2 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed.......2005-02-25

Just back from Rome and have to say I was very frustrated with the book throughout my stay. Here's what I thought were the basic weaknesses.

Out of date! If you look closely you'll see it is published in 04 but is based on reviews written in 03. So all the prices etc. were much higher than in the book.

Maps could be a lot better. There are a few color maps in the beginning, some others at the end and then some smaller ones throughout the book.
I went to one recommended restaurant (even though the included map does not show the street!) and found that it no longer existed. Each map should pinpoint each reviewed item.

Index is rudimentary. I had to look under multiple headings to find a specific thing.

Overall the sad part is that there is a wealth of information in the book but I found myself constantly flicking back and forwards trying to find things.

There is a listing of the "Top things to see", but it does not show which page the detail on these sights are.

I have used "Let's Go" guides in the past and have not had this problem. I would recommend the Frommers guide over this one.

1 out of 5 stars Found it very poor.......2004-04-25

I'm writing from Rome. I have the Lonely Planet's Western Europe book but thought since I'm spending some time in Rome I would buy the Let's Go book. But I found it very difficult to use, the index is lacking, the maps poor and not referenced in the text. I have ended up just tossing it and just the few pages of Lonely Planet's guide to get around. I had hoped Let's Go with it's long experience in Europe could compete with LP but not in this case.

    2 out of 5 stars 2003 was _much_ better.......2004-02-21

I really don't know what went wrong with Let's Go. It used to be a great series, full of the insider tips that excused its occasional snarkiness. Now, quite suddenly, it starts substituting "guy on the street" and other non-sequiters for content. I've used the 2003 Rome and the 2004 Rome, and while 2003 let some of the nasty changes in, it still managed to preserve the spirit of the series. It was also about fifty times better written. I know the staff changes each year, so this isn't all that surprising. My advice: if you can find the 2003 guide used, buy it! Even if it's not completely updated, it had that edge which made Let's Go Let's Go, instead of some bland guide geared towards no particular audience whatsoever.

    5 out of 5 stars A Lucky Man.......2006-01-14

Columbus was a lucky man (blessed, he would say). He had to be. Who else could have so much go so wrong and still become famous for the one big thing he did by mistake: discover America...if he did that. Anyway, he had a lot of adventure (or misadventure), and Jean Fritz tells about it and him--not in the traditionally reverent way, but with a humorous and matter-of-fact approach.

1 out of 5 stars "Where Are You Going, Heinrich Himmler?".......2003-09-26

It's hard to imagine something lower or more morally contemptible than books of this kind. Columbus was guilty of the genocide of eight million Native people. Imagine "Where Are You Going Heinrich Himmler?" or "Where Are You Going Adolf Eichmann?" for comparison. His vaunted "discovery" was no such thing. Native people were already there. Polynesians, Inuit, Phoenicians, and Africans had already made the same voyage, and unlike old Chris did not slaughter millions once they got here.
For very young children, I would simply mention that Columbus was a very cruel man and leave it at that. It is simply impossible to tell them the truth at such a young age without giving them nightmares. But for heaven's sake, DONT whitewash or glorify a butcher like Columbus. Once they are in their teens, tell you children the TRUTH with such wonderful books as Loewen's Lies My Teacher Told Me or Takaki's A Different Mirror. Our kids deserve truth, not lies, in order for them to better deal with the legacy of genocide.

4 out of 5 stars A Fun Book to Stimulate Interest in History.......2002-01-31

This is a fun book that should help your youngster develop an interest in American History. It is easy to read an has great illustratiions. You will not be disappointed with this purchase. Look for others by the same author.

4 out of 5 stars Very informative with interesting illustrations.......1998-01-24

Nicely done. Jean Fritz relates to children of "all ages". A necessary compliment alongside the more encyclopedic versions.

                Book Description

In the decades since the launch of Sputnik, the world has thrilled to the long-dreamed-of moon walks of the Apollo astronauts, marvelled at spectacular photographs of the outer planets brought to us by Voyager, and watched in horror as the Challenger exploded before our eyes. No longer the
terrifying realm of science fiction, space has been hailed by popular culture as the "final frontier," the focal point of future exploration. Yet today there is no strong consensus about our future in space. Where should we go next? Mars? Deep space? Should we continue to send humans into space? Is
it worth the cost to explore space at all? Now, a curator of space history at the Smithsonian, Valerie Neal, has assembled a noted group of writers and thinkers--among them Stephen Jay Gould, Carl Sagan, Timothy Ferris, Robert L. Forward, and Stephen J. Pyne--to consider such questions. The result
is an intriguing collection of essays that offer stimulating insights into the exploration of new worlds.
Boasting an oversize format and more than fifty color illustrations, this engaging volume offers readers a fascinating look at exploration's past and future. Several pieces vividly depict the actual experience of space travel and the many scientific findings made along the way. Harrison H.
Schmitt, the last astronaut to set foot on the moon, provides an often spellbinding account of that adventure, in the process making a compelling case for human rather than robotic explorers (during the examination of a boulder, Schmitt made a discovery that a mere circuit-board would have
missed--and that is to say nothing of the poetic earth-rise he describes). But robots get equal time. Edward C. Stone, Project Scientist for the Voyager missions, describes other worlds as seen from the camera-eye of a machine millions of miles away: the roiling storm systems on Jupiter, the
complexity of Saturn's rings, and the spectacular nitrogen geysers on Triton, one of Neptune's major satellites. Looking towards the future, Stephen Jay Gould pleads for a manned mission to Mars, one which would scour the Red Planet for signs of life (paleontologists have found fossilized bacteria
in Earth silica, Gould explains, and similar fossils on Mars may be the key to proving that life once existed there). And physicist Robert L. Forward offers detailed plans for actual starships that could send astronauts to the nearest star system in a single lifetime--and with today's technology.
Where Next, Columbus? is an utterly absorbing contribution to a debate that may help define the twenty-first century. With colorful illustrations, a spacious oversized format, and ten fascinating essays--all but one of which have never been published before--this volume will intrigue anyone
interested in space travel or our place in the universe.

4 out of 5 stars INsights into the future of exploration.......1998-07-06

Valerie Neal, editor: Where Next, Columbus?: The Future of Space Exploration (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1994), 230 pages, £10 sterling. reviewed by Ted Witham

I finished reading Where Next, Columbus? in the week that Melbourne geologist Ian Plimer took the creationists to court in Sydney. It was a tonic to read in that atmosphere. It mentions God but once, and the Church only a few times when it refers to the imperialistic domination of the Conquistadors in North and Central America. But it is the best I have read for some time about the spirituality of science and technology.

Where Next, Columbus? is a series of essays, reflective and technical, about the story of human exploration. It delineates particularly the choices facing the human race about the exploration of space. These choices raise vast ethical and spiritual issues. They ultimately concern the nature of the human race, and its survival.

The first essay by historian Stephen Pyne divides the history of European exploration into three stages: the first were the voyages of exploration simply proving that the world was round and that it could be circumnavigated. Columbus was followed by Magellan.

This was the age of the oceans and the shores with which ships came into contact.

Then came the phase of conquest of the interiors of these new lands and the creation myths about their colonisation by European settlers. With this phase came the intriguing dilemmas faced by mercenaries and missionaries as they struggled to find categories of thought through which they could understand the human beings they met. Were they innocent savages to be protected and civilised, or rivals to be tamed and exploited?

This second age ended with somewhat a whimper. Intrepid explorers struggled across polar ice caps to impose a human skew on vast wilderness with limited success. There were no people, or apparent resources to plunder. The problem was that "the last of the continents, Antarctica, resisted discovery. The ice field lacked the kind of! data, experiences, and referents that had characterized other explorations." (p. 24)

The third and modern stage of exploration is the exploration of unpeopled places: deep under the sea, discovering strange life forms depending on heat from vents on the ocean floor, or again, going to the moon and Mars and wondering if these are really feasible journeys.

Professor Pyne's questions are primarily spiritual. What sort of creatures are we with this relentless wanderlust and this nasty inability to recognise our siblings in new peoples?

Pyne's essay provides a backdrop for the other essays. Harrison Schmidt, the first scientist and last astronaut to land on the moon, describes a breathtakingly beautiful journey into the lunar Valley of Taurus-Littrow, and the effect of such "firsts" as the first earthrise seen by human beings on a generation's spirit: "daring, and imagination" (p. 58). Schmidt's travelogue is accompanied by stunning photographs from his Apollo 17 mission.

Other essays describe the robotic exploration of Mars and the outer solar system, and bring us up to date with technical research into galactic travel. The consensus of this book is that we have the technology to at least begin the peopled exploration of the solar system and beyond. According to famed geologist Stephen J. Gould, life did begin on Mars and then became extinct. A thorough exploration of Mars would invigorate the study of earth and its ecosystems. Any advance in understanding about the nature of life and the varieties of it enhance the chances of the survival of the planet, of human beings, and the species who share the planet with us.

In addition, Carl Sagan, editor Valerie Neal and Thomas Lovejoy explore the possibilities and ethical dilemmas of human beings colonising other places and planets, "terraforming" them to make them suitable habitats. They urge that planning for such colonisation should begin, so that at least the human species might continue in the face of earth's demise or overcrowding.

These at leas! t are scientists who are not far from the kingdom of heaven. They provoke thought about the ethical choices before the human race concerning our survival and our identity: questions that are fundamentally spiritual and expand our understanding of the Universe which God has created for us.

Where Next, Columbus? is a handsome large format book with splendid photos of exploration, particularly of space, and was the follow-up to an exhibition mounted in Washington's Smithsonian Institute by curator Valerie Neal. For me, it is a wonderful anthology of lateral thinking about where God might be leading the human race.

                              Book Description

The problems of development of constructive methods for the analysis of linear and weakly nonlinear boundary-value problems for a broad class of functional differential equations traditionally occupy one of the central places in the qualitative theory of differential equations.

The authors of this monograph suggest some methods for the construction of the generalized inverse (or pseudo-inverse) operators for the original linear Fredholm operators in Banach (or Hilbert) spaces for boundary-value problems regarded as operator systems in abstract spaces. They also study basic properties of the generalized Green's operator.

In the first three chapters some results from the theory of generalized inversion of bounded linear operators in abstract spaces are given, which are then used for the investigation of boundary-value problems for systems of functional differential equations. Subsequent chapters deal with a unified procedure for the investigation of Fredholm boundary-value problems for operator equations; analysis of boundary-value problems for standard operator systems; and existence of solutions of linear and nonlinear differential and difference systems bounded on the entire axis.
