3 Stars, with reasons.......2006-11-02

I've worn beaded wampum belts for a long, long time now. Ever since I saw that documentary on the way of the Iroquois, Blazing Saddles, I've been obsessed with their belts and their culture. They're sporty, practical, and downright indestructible. (the belts, not the Iroqouis, thank god) With that being said, I was a little disappointed with this one.

I'd been familiar with Ray Tehanetorens' other books and admired his work in the past. Namely his third book, "Squaws on the Halfshell: The Iroquois Kama Sutra". Fascinating. That one really cleared up a lot of confusion Wanda and I had over which end goes up during the execution of the "Squatting Elk". (it's the hooves, always keep the hooves pointing north) We keep the book within arm's reach, as we never know when we'll need to use it. It's been sitting on the tractor tire we call a coffee table since its release.

However, I really feel that Tehanetoren dropped the ball on this one. Many of the pieces featured in the book are misidentified. Example: on page 36, the caption under the turquois and ratbone tongue seperator states that it was originally used by tribes in the NORTHERN Dakotas. Hah! Anyone with half a brain knows its of the kind found in the CENTRAL DAKOTAS! This oversight is almost unforgivable. It doesn't end there.

The back cover displays what it claims to be a ball-clamp fashioned from fresh water crocodile teeth. Wrong again. The Iroquois never practiced ball-clamping. That is straight Illinois Sioux behavior there. Any boy scout worth his neckerchief can tell ya that.

Still, I have to give this one a solid 3 stars, even if based solely on the couple of little details he DID get right.

I was really pleased to find the text of the book is in my favorite font, 19 Times Mongoloid Italics Bold. You just don't see that one used much anymore. (outside of the Atlanta Journal Constitution and NAMBLA newsletters) Not really sure why. Maybe the sheer size of the font discourages its use, in that it only allows 4 words per printed page.

Also, I found the book's Introduction by David Duke to be a daring, if ill-advised, choice.

Good History and Descriptions.......2006-07-04

An excellent book on the use and meaning of wampum belts by the Iroquois. I found the descriptions and history of the belts fascinating. There does not appear to be very much written on this subject, and several of the publications outlining the wampum belts are out of print. The book covers most of the well-known wampum belts including photographs of reproductions of these belts. Color photographs would have been better, but there is still enough detail to see some of the individual beads.

Magnificent.......2006-03-21

Another charming girl-and-her-horse story from Dorothy Lyons! By a strange twist of events, Merry Moore's family comes to take residence in an old cabin in the Mountains of California. It is here that Merry meets Wampum, a sprightly fill, and hatches a plan to tame, and then buy the beautiful Appaloosa. A little-known classic, with beautiful illustrations by legend Wesley Dennis.

Souls of the Past Reawakened!.......2000-07-28

I am absolutely delighted with Mr. Antal's book "A Wampum Denied." This book attracts the many interests embodied within me: The "historian" with a desire to research and learn about events of the past. The "war enthusiast" with a lust for battle, tactics, and strategy. The "reader enthusiast" who rejoices as a well-written narrative comes to life before his eyes. The "student of management" who analyzes the leadership styles and skills of historical leaders to translate into effective leadership for today.

Mr. Antal presents the events surrounding Colonel Henry Proctor in a thorough, thoughtful, and objective manner. As I read "A Wampum Denied", I was able to understand the many psychological, logistical, and personality challenges that became significantly influential in both the failures and the successes of Colonel Proctor as he coordinated his military leadership between elements of the British Right Division, the Canadian Militia, and the Indian confederacy. I gained tremendous insight into the "unseen battles" faced by Colonel Proctor, such as cultural concerns of the Canadian citizens and the French Canadien settlers in Michigan; increasing logistical and strategic pressures from the Native Americans under his charge; and especially the political and strategic dichotomy between Colonel Proctor and his superior officers (with the exception of Major General Isaac Brock).

As a researcher, I truly appreciate the thoroughness of Mr. Antal's own research for his book "A Wampum Denied" and the detailed bibliography and notes found within. In my opinion, Mr. Antal was able to take the findings of his extremely comprehensive and exhaustive research and present his information in a delightful narrative that flows smoothly from beginning to end in rich detail. (The illustrations are exceptional!)

Mr. Antal's book "A Wampum Denied" increased my understanding and awareness of the important events that helped to shape the future of the Detroit frontier and has become a permanent addition within my library.

I highly recommend "A Wampum Denied: Proctor's War of 1812", by Mr. Sandy Antal, for anyone who enjoys reading an exciting story for enrichment, entertainment, or both. You will not be disappointed in the added value you will receive.

A great book about war in the Old Northwest!.......1999-06-03

Sandy Antal's book is a superb revisionist study of Major General Henry Procter's defense of Upper Canada during the War of 1812. Unlike most historians, Antal presents Henry Procter as having been a resourceful, intelligent, and daring military leader who provided an excellent defense of Canada despite overwhelming disadvantages. Antal also provides ample evidence that Procter based his military activities on a strategic plan of creating a Native American buffer state to preserve British interests in the North American West.

Antal's writing style makes for a smooth and entertaining read. The book is also interesting because it is not a biography of Procter or a traditional campaign history book. Instead, Antal writes about the war by examining the perspectives of all the different types of participants; soldiers, Native Americans, politicians, and local citizens. Antal also explains the socio-economic and ethnic environment in which the war took place. Major General Procter is always at the center of discussion, but Antal's approach provides a broad understanding of Procter's circumstances during the war.

The real strength of Antal's argument involves the use of compelling primary source evidence. The letters written by Issac Brock, for example, indicate that Procter ought be credited for preparing the Canadian conquest of the Michigan Territory. The evidence portrays Procter as an extremely credible soldier who was neglected by his superiors during the war. Antal's evidence also provides a compelling argument that Procter fully supported the Native American cause. Antal even provides evidence that Procter admired Tecumseh of the Shawnees. This idea is completely new among scholars and historical fiction writers.

Scholars and avocational readers who are primarily interested in Native American history, however, may be disappointed with Antal's approach. Unlike most books written in the last ten years on the subject, Antal's book does not glorify Tecumseh or his cause. Instead, Antal considers the issues of other Native American leaders on an equal level with Tecumseh. Consequently, readers learn about Tecumseh's influential limitations from both Procter's perspective and that of other tribal leaders such as the Wyandotte chief Walk in the Water.

The end result is a world in which Henry Procter constantly struggles to fight despite having unreliable Native American and militia support for his small, sick, and starving army. Antal's telling of the story makes every one of Procter's successes seem like a spectacular and miraculous victory. Procter's failure appears to have been nothing short of inevitable. This book ought to read by all those interested in the War of 1812 and the Old Northwest.

A ground-breaking study, a must for 1812 scholars!.......1999-01-16

Sandy Antal has successfully presented a new analysis and insight into the events of the war for the old northwest during the War of 1812. Particularly noteworthy, is his illumination of the reputation of Henry Procter, a leader much aligned in the past for British failure in the theater. What Antal demonstrates, is that Procter's case was never fairly or objectively presented, both by American, but more importantly, by Canadian historians. Procter's actions, motives and reputation have been shrouded by a veil of misinterpretation, merely because the facts were unknown, unavailable, or ignored. Antal does much not only to save Procter's reputation, but to reassess British war aims, strategy and the Anglo-Native alliance. He has provided many pieces that have been missing to the puzzle of the events of the War of 1812. With those pieces, historians will have to reassess long-held beliefs regarding the campaigns in Michigan, Ohio, and Upper Canada. Antal also provides an "inside view" of the British and Canadian forces previously unavailable. Of particular note is his order of battle information and biographical notations of key leaders and participants. This volume is an heir to Gilpins' "War of 1812 in the Old Northwest" and Stanley's "War of 1812 Land Operations" as an accurate and well written book of the campaign in the wilderness. A must have for 1812 historians!

This is an informative glossary containing terms pertinent to works of art on paper but as the author Paul Goldman notes the book only briefly treats photomechanical processes and contemporary trends in printmaking. The illustrations are all drawn from the Getty Museum or the British Museum collections so readers can go directly to the online digital sites at those institutions for more information. This make the book valuable as an introductory text for a course on the History of Prints and Drawings. It is also a "must read" for emerging collectors and for art lovers who desire a deeper appreciation of the complexities of the graphic arts. Used in conjunction with Linda C. Hults, The Print in the Western World (U. of Wisconsin Press) and Ursula Weekes, Techniques of Drawing (Woodstocker Books) it provides a sound overview. Unfortunately the book omits some important terms and slights the history of paper making, but again it is a handy reference and not a definitive one. While the bibliography will point readers to many valuable printed resources, a list of relevant web sites would be a useful addition. The book is printed on quality paper and the binding appears sturdy. The second edition contains basic information on conservation issues. Those seeking more information on prints should consult the website at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (N.Y.) which gives extensive technical information and many digital examples. Lynne N. What's here is good material. It lists a fair range of terms used in art on paper, with many reproductions of art showing the effects of different tools or materials. The book itself if well printed, on heavy paper that shows the sample artworks very clearly. And, as a parting benefit, it offers a helpful bibliography.

It's what's not here that's the problem. A book twice this size might have been adequate for either drawing or watercolor, and a printmaking would have needed a lot more than that by itself. What's here is good, but possibly not enough to justify this book for most collections.

more, and less, than I expected.......2002-01-02

I had hoped this book would incorporate aesthetics with art history, but that is not quite the author's intent. Instead, it is similar to a dictionary, being a 63-page volume of alphabetically arranged technical definitions, from aquatint to wood-engraving. It is also more than a dictionary, having more than 60 examples to illustrate techniques and methods.

This book is neither historical nor biographical in focus, but you will learn a great deal of technical information.

If you're looking for detailed information on large and aggressive (and sometimes rare) fish, The Manual of Tank Busters is just what you're looking for.

This book doesn't have an overwelming amount of fishes profiled, but all the 'Tank Buster' favorites including Snakeheads, Arrowana, Pacu, and Redtail cats. Great photos accompany each fish. Definetly a must fan for fans of large and aggressive fish.

The Problem of the Rational Soul in the Thirteenth Century traces the Latin scholastics' attempt to deal with two essentially incompatible notions of the human soul: the scientific view of Aristotle which considers it to be a form, and the Augustinian view of the soul as a substance in its own right, from Gundissalinus to the Parisian condemnation of 1277. It traces the growing disarray of Latin notions of the soul, the growth of the monopsychism controversy, the solutions of Bonaventure and Aquinas, through the variety of responses to Aquinas's De unitate intellectus. Among its conclusions are that the traditional dualism diminished with time, that there was little agreement among the "heterodox Aristotelians," and that, with two exceptions, no one in the thirteenth century taught the present position of the Catholic Church, that the rational soul is infused at conception.
