                    Book Description

This report documents the discovery, excavation and preservation of a Norman moated stone manor house found in 1984 at the Mount House, Witney. The trial excavations were made in advance of housing development, and revealed groups of buildings surrounded by a curtain wall and moat. Further excavations in the north-west and south-east parts of the complex uncovered a massive and well-preserved tower and attached range of the first half of the 12th century, which was progressively enlarged by a chapel, a central pier, a raised terrace and a garderobe block. The buildings were further modified in the later medieval period. Coins in robber trenches indicate that some buildings were demolished during the English Civil War, though others were maintained. The front cover shows Nathaniel Buck?s early 18th century engraving purporting to show the remains, which were systematically demolished in the mid-18th century to make way for a new house. The site remained in the ownership of the Bishops of Winchester until 1862, when it was purchased by the 6th Duke of Marlborough. The present house was built c.1904. The site was purchased by Oxfordshire County Council in 1993, and the tower is now on display to the public.

                      Book Description

Archaeological excavation at the site of Poyle House, a derelict Georgian country house, revealed limited evidence of earlier buildings on the site. These comprised the beamslots of a possible farm range, and structural remains of the north wall of a medieval house. The buildings formed part of the medieval Poyle Manor, and limited artefactual evidence suggests that occupation began during the late 11th or 12th centuries. Some evidence for the layout of the house and outbuildings in the Georgian period, and later, was also recorded. Five worked flints were recovered, all residual in later contexts. Pieces present were of mesolithic and late neolithic/early Bronze Age date (2000-1700 BC).

Goodall has written an exhaustively researched study that does not exhaust the reader. His prose presents details of late medieval political and religious history, art & architecture, and household finances, without losing the thread of narrative and argument that allures the reader's attention, and refuses to manipulate it with any agenda other than getting at the reality of a charming and significant part of England's spiritual, psychological, and cultural past. The photographic illustrations are superb, the plans well made.

5 out of 5 stars The Internship Bible for Animation, #1.......2002-06-03

I found this book to be the Bible for finding an internship in animation. Lots of animation companies, great descriptions of the companies, and advice on writing my resume. I was able to find an internship in the field. I highly recommend this book for high school seniors and college students in CG. I also recommend "Careers in Computer Graphics and Animation" these are two well needed resources.

This books was very helpful in identifying the companies where I can apply for an internship. I live in Los Angeles but did not know how to locate and contact the companies in my area. This is a very useful book!!!

2 out of 5 stars Misleading Title, Mixed Content.......2001-09-29

In purchasing this book, I had little information to guide me beforehand; I made the decision based on commentary on other works by this author, the title, and my need for information on internships in this field.

I found myself greviously disappointed. While the information capsules about the employers are indeed helpful, no specifics were given for internships these employers might or might not offer. Instead, the contents of the book (aside from some prefatory material providing poor advice about resumes and cover letters) act as a directory to employers. While I am not discounting the helpfulness of such a directory, the misleading title and the quality of the prefatory material leave this reader with a very low opinion the party responsible for misleadingly marketing this volume.

By and large, this is an excellent series for moving beyond the usual sort of travel book and getting a look at what makes a city or a country work elsewhere in the world. I spent some time in the UK about forty years ago, got thoroughly hooked on London, and have made several visits back there since, but I was never able to figure a way to move there permanently -- or I simply never quite worked up the nerve. Whatever. The Thatcher years changed the city enormously and mostly not for the best, and the Blair years (which this book doesn't cover, obviously) probably have changed things yet again. But the root condition of "London-ness" hasn't changed in centuries, and the author does a very good job of communicating what that is, from the day-to-day workings of the "nanny state" and the natural civility and courtesy of most Londoners (most of them, most of the time) to thumbnail descriptions of the Metropolitan Area's neighborhoods and why you *really* don't want to own a car there if you can help it. Hargraves is a Yank who spent seven years living and working as an almost-ordinary bloke in London, and his perspective, leavened by dry wit, make for very engaging reading.

I'm planning on studying in London for a year or more, and was so greatful for this book. It's an interesting read, more than a reference book, but can be referred to over and over again. Reccomened if you are going to spend time living, not visiting London, or if you are just interested in the city and its culture.

I was happy to find this book because it answered all the questions I had about going to London and spending about six months there. It goes beyond the tourist layer of London (which is pretty thick) and gets you into the city as it exists for Londoners. Even after several months here I still refer to it often and it has helped me to really enjoy the city, away from the madding crowds.

I read quite a lot of biographies. Mainly celebrities, but a non-celebrity biography does tend to catch my eye. This author could actually be half a celebrity, as her daughter (although best known in the UK) is actually Martine McCutcheon (who has starred in EastEnders, and more worldwide, Love Actually). Following on from her daughter's biography, Jenny has given it a go, and she's got more of a life to talk about than her daughter did. (Yes I own that biography!)

Jenny has been through a hard life. Her dad regularly abused her and her two sisters, beat and abused his wife, and done things to his sons, which are never really touched upon. Her mother gets abused by her father, and gives birth to child after child, and they were never fed properly. The dad has since died, much to the delight of Jenny and her sister, although it is touched upon that the youngest sister had a relationship with the dad.

It's an awful book to try and read, although it's gripping at the same time. At least Jenny has something to talk about, unlike these Z list celebrities who release their first biography before they're out of their teens. It's a shocking book, but is a brilliant read, and well worth getting, if you want to read a decent biography.

Margot returns to her well-to-do family in England on the eve of her Aunt Chloe's murder trial-she is accused of fatally stabbing her twin sister with a kitchen knife in the garden. Nothing has been the same since Claudia's body was found: her 14 year old daughter Lynette refuses to leave her bedroom, the paparazzi are relentless, and Tikki, the family's beloved Abyssinian, goes to stay with the neighbors. When another body, whom no one recognizes, shows up facedown in the pond while the family is in the midst of Chloe's trial, doubt and suspicion intensify-and no one can be trusted.

These scandalous deaths can't be related, can they? If Chloe is locked up, another murderer must be lurking about. Since no one is trying to solve the puzzle in the garden, Margot decides it's up to her to investigate. She soon finds herself getting in too deep-and running from a killer who's bent on staying one step ahead of her at all costs...

4 out of 5 stars Not her best..........2003-08-28

...but even when not at her best, a Marian Babson book is fun to read. As stated in other reviews, this is not really so much a mystery as a psychological study of a family under stress. Margot returns to her family home in England after having lived in New York the past eighteen months. She returns home as one of her cousins is on trial for the murder of another cousin, actually the twin of the accused.
Why is this not the best? Well, there are a LOT of characters introduced very quickly into the story and it is, at first, rather confusing keeping up with who is the cousin/aunt/uncle/father/daughter of whom. Secondly, there are few clues as to whom the real murderer is. And last, the final solution is a little out there. The murderer confesses without there being any real pressure on him/her to do so...s/he just states it as a fact and goes on with the story of what really happened.
But, leaving those complaints aside, this book is enjoyable & quick to read and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a cat mystery and/or is a fan of other Marian Babson books.

4 out of 5 stars not much of a mystery, but still a good read.......2002-04-06

I'm an avid Marian Babson fan, and cannot think of a single novel that she's written that I did not enjoy to some degree or another. Having admitted to that, I must own that while I enjoyed reading "The Cat Next Door," this novel, unlike previous Babson books, was not that much of a mystery novel. It was not one of her lighthearted works either. Essentially, the plot is as follows: about a year ago, Claudia (wife of rising member of parliament, Kingsley) was found stabbed in her parent's garden. Standing over her with a knife in her hand, was her twin sister, Chloe Morton. Now, Chloe's trial is about to begin, and family members have descended from all corners of the world in order to give support to shell-shocked family.

Margot (cousin to Chloe and Claudia), a professional photographer, returns home to her childhood home, in order to lend support to the uncle and aunt who helped raise her (Chloe and Claudia's parents). Tired and depressed, she is appalled to find that her uncle and aunt have more or less fallen apart at the seams: her Aunt Milly has retreated into the world of Regency romance novels, and her Uncle Wilfred has taken to overeating. And then there is Claudia's teenage daughter, Lynette, who has barricaded herself in her grandparents's bedroom and refuses to leave... As the date of the trial draws near, the tense atmosphere in the house mounts, as Margot tries to make sense of what happened and of Chloe's refusal to cooperate with the police or her counsel (Chloe has refused to talk to anyone about Claudia's murder). Kingsley wants the family to pressure Chloe to plead guilty so that she will never have to face a trial, and so that Lynette will not have to testify. But Margot cannot help but wonder if Chloe is actually guilty of having killed Claudia, or if she is covering up for someone else?

"The Cat Next Door" is not really a murder mystery novel at all (there are no cunning plot twists or red herring suspects), but a study of the psychological study of how a slightly eccentric family copes with a crisis. The novel unfolded a little slowly but flowed effortlessly, thus making it a really easy read. I must admit however that the manner in which everything was finally resolved did beggar belief! For the Claudia's murderer to calmly admit all, esp when no one suspected this character of any wrongdoing was not very probable. I think it would have been more likely for this character to have carried on the course (s)he had decided on and let everyone else stew! However the book was a nice read, and if you're looking for something to curl up with before falling asleep, you can't really go wrong with this novel.

26 sermons selected from 24 years of preaching at City Temple Methodist Church in London. Sort of a "greatest hits" of one of the greatest Methodist preachers of the 20th century. Varied in subject -- from dealing with life's difficulties, to understanding the person and work of Jesus, to discussions on prayer, freedom, forgiveness, etc. A unique and inspiring book. Highly recommended.
