Book Description

This volume presents a summary of research conducted between 1986 and 1990 by the Western Conifers Research Cooperative on the effects of acid rain and associated pollutants on the forests of the Western United States. The book opens with background chapters on topics including physiography, climate, soil sensitivity to acid rain, and methods of air pollution assessment in forests. The second section of the book presents five regional studies of forest growth and condition in the coniferous forests of the American West. The book concludes with a chapter of summary, projections, and recommendations. The studies in The Response of Western Forests to Air Pollution provide some of the most detailed analyses to date of the impact of air pollution on plant growth, and include research conducted at scales ranging from small (open-tip chambers) to large (regional growth trends), and at biological levels of organization ranging from seedlings to stands. It will be of interest to ecologists, resource managers, foresters, and environmental policymakers.

Overflowing with brilliant color photography, this is the only illustrated guide that provides the practical information that you need while traveling—complete restaurant and hotel reviews with exact prices for lodging and dining (not ranges), plus time-saving tips and how to avoid crowds, exact admission prices to key sights, great photo stops, and special notes on “kid-friendly” attractions throughout.

    Hotels
Our detailed reviews represent the best accommodations in New Zealand, in all price ranges. From five-star luxury hotels to low-budget lodges, we’ll tell you what to expect in terms of price and quality through extensive coverage of hotels and their surrounding neighborhoods, exact prices of double-occupancy rooms (including breakfast), plus pictures of hotel facilities and guestrooms.

    Restaurants
If you want to experience the best that Britain has to offer, pay particular attention to our outstanding restaurant coverage that will help you choose from the thousands of local eateries that cater to every budget and dining experience. From affordable meals at local pubs to decadent, romantic, candlelit dinners—you’ll find it in see it New Zealand. Each review covers house signature dishes, ambiance, actual prices for a two-course lunch and a three-course dinner (for two people), hours of operation, and what transportation will get you there.

    The Sights
Whether you want to brave the original bungee jump, cruise through a remote, mind-bendingly beautiful fjord, sip your way through the sunniest wine region, or settle down at a lodge within sight of volcanoes, see it New Zealand will take you there. Accessibly written to help you navigate throughout the country without missing a thing, each attraction includes exact admission prices, what galleries and museums not to miss, and where to stop for quick bites and refreshing drinks along the way. Sights are also rated for their “value”, “walkability”, “historic and cultural interest”, plus we suggest fantastic “photo stops” and entertaining and age-appropriate “kid-friendly” attractions throughout the book.

    What to Do?
Our shopping walks will lead you to cutting-edge fashions to fit all budgets, from hip streetwear to expensive fashions for your feet. But, New Zealand has much more to offer than just sight-seeing and shopping. Fodor’s see it New Zealand provides insider information on classical, theatrical, and cinematic performances, New Zealand’s music scene, nightlife, spectator and activity sports, and festivals and events.

    Atlas and Maps

Detailed neighborhood maps are incorporated throughout the book to help you navigate on historic walks, shopping tours, or to find a restaurant. Plus, a 16-page atlas details each road and path with highlights of important landmarks, parks, metro stations, and car parking areas.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very good for what it is--but it's not comprehensive.......2007-08-11

This travel guide to New Zealand wins five stars for two reasons.

First, this book explodes with dozens and dozens of color photographs and color maps. You cannot help but be "wowed" with the beauty of the nation of New Zealand, as well as the beauty of this book.

Second, this travel guide points out--using a star system--(1.) how naturally beautiful; (2.) how kid-friendly; (3.) how historically intersting; (4.) how walkable, and (5.) how photo-friendly a whole list of cities and regions are. This information is precious because it helps you plan out your trip accordingly. (By the way, I took this book with me to New Zealand, and I found their rankings accurate and very helpful.)

But this guide alone won't be sufficient for travel in New Zealand. You'll have to add another one or two guides that are far more chock-full of details and practical information than "Fodor's See It New Zealand" is. My suggestion is "The Rough Guide to New Zealand," which served as my go-to lifesaver when I was over their on my honeymoon.

5 out of 5 stars This is definitely a book for beginners - that's NOT a bad thing!.......2007-07-13

There seems to be a lot of unnecessary hostility towards a book that gives very simple and basic approaches to life and figure drawing. The author's approach was that if you're going to life drawing you're probably not going into the intensive workshops that show bone and muscles, this is your first time and you only get 1-2 hours, so how do you start?

Allan's explanations of how to approach the figure as a beginner are really simple and reasonable. In fact, this book makes me do something other anatomy books haven't done.....RELAX. If you see that a teacher is drawing the figure as an average human being, why shouldn't you? Do you need to draw like Burne Hogarth especially given that the subject matter you're going to be drawing from, are average and natural figures. Everyday people are what you encounter in a life drawing class, so you need to learn how to walk before you start looking for style.

The author is honest about his approach and discusses his weaknesses, and how he approached solutions. That's better than pretending you're a perfect anatomy god. You might think "well, if he's not not an anatomy god, then why should I read this book?" Allan tells you how to start, and how to use basics to start approaching the figure in a life drawing class, what to look for and how to capture information in short amounts of time.

This isn't the end all/be all to figure drawing books, but this is a good book to go back and read when you're stuck sometimes. It gives you the steps to start drawing, not just how to draw better.

Allan is honest, he didn't want to include an anatomy section. He felt that there are better teachers than him in that department. He wanted to get people comfortable drawing what they see in figure drawing classes.

Learning the muscles are for more intermediate students, they're not something you should learn as a beginner, and not something you're actively looking for in the average life drawing class. This is not to say you shouldn't learn anatomy of muscle and skeletal studies because they ARE important as you improve as an artist, but let's look at it like this.

Look at a children's "How to draw dogs" book? Does the author go into detailed anatomy studies when you know a child is just trying to start out? The same goes for life drawing. A person needs to learn how to observe certain basics in life drawing before going in to details. This book is perfect for that.

Studying and making art for many years now, it was refreshing to see a book actually cover the basics in such a relaxed manner, and now it's helping me go back and place a better start on my own studies of the figure, as well as other books that are good at teaching structural anatomy.

5 out of 5 stars The ONLY book that makes figure drawing easy to figure out!.......2005-07-16

In art classes, I was always puzzled by exactly how I was supposed to draw the figure. Teachers would just expect us to look at the model and draw. There would be some vague discussion of anatomy, but basically you were just expected to put your pencil on the paper and produce a recognizable human figure. The results were very hit-or-miss. It was like a driver ed teacher handing me the keys to the car without explaining how to steer!

Now that I've read and used Figure Drawing Workshop, however, I have a much better idea of how to break the human form into manageable shapes that connect to create a whole. Kraayvanger shows how to look at big organic shapes and understand them, then capture them on paper. Lots of simple, practical exercises about holding the pencil or charcoal, getting and gaining control, and seeing in shapes spell everything out in easy-to-manage steps.

If you like clear, understandable approaches to complicated subjects, Figure Drawing Workshop is OUTSTANDING. If you want a "way in" to figure drawing that instructors haven't been able to provide, this is it. It's terrific! Get out there and get drawing!

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best book I have ever read on the subject.......2005-03-21

It was many long years ago, that I tried my hand at figure drawing without much success. Now over a decade later, I tried my hand at it again and casually pickd up this book to see what it had to offer in terms of advice.

I have to say that this is "hands down" the best book on the subject I have ever read on the subject. It is simple and easy to follow; containing a wealth of information and tips about drawing the figure perfectly from start to finish. It is definietly one of the few books that actually TEACHES you how to draw, in a way that's easy to understand.

Some people have dismissed the book as being too cartoony compared to those of Anthony Ryder and doesn't go nearly as deep when it comes to fine details and anatomy. But I think Kraayvangers drawings flow better and display a variety of style based on the different materials used to draw them.

Others have criticized it for not being as wordy or in depth as the other books. But I believe in the principle that less is more. Not everybody (especially myself) likes to plow through a drawing book like its an academic textbook. I learn better through mimicing and observing and there's even enough information in here to go deeper if necessary.

All in all, this is a great book for beginners and pros alike. Don't let the cover fool you, inside there is a wealth of infomation.

5 out of 5 stars BEST DRAWING BOOK ON THE MARKET!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-07-16

As a painter and sculpter I wanted to tighten up my drawing skills and began looking for a book that offered clear instruction by a teacher who could personally produce a quality drawing. After looking through 75-100 books at the local mega-bookstore, I found what I was looking for. The quality of Mr. Kraavanger's art is light years ahead of ANY of the other books I viewed and his approach to teaching is logical, comprehensive and entertaining. I can say with great conviction that this IS the best figure drawing book on the market today.

        1 out of 5 stars A drawing student's opinion........2004-07-08

In his preface Mr. Kraayvanger writes about studying to draw: "Developing the discipline to draw exactly what you see before you attempt the difficult approaches is high on the list. This is the study that many art schools have mistakenly eliminated, or best minimized, in order to protect the "fragile" creative spirit of their students."~~ I agree with the author's sentiment because I've lived it. I wanted to learn to draw and paint well and enrolled in the art department of a university. After a year of being told that my dream of making drawings as beautiful as the old masters was "unimaginative", I left and after doing some research found an atelier with the aim of training artist in the classical method. I've just finished my first year there and I have never felt so challenged and happy.~~ It's unfortunate that I find nothing else in Mr. Kraayvanger's book to agree with because it doesn't follow through on his promise of a disciplined, exacting method. The text lacks focus, is poorly organized and, in the end, is devoid of detailed (i.e. step by step) instruction. ~~ Mr. Kraayvanger writes that his "own innate style of drawing leans toward solid realism", but his drawings are not very solid and only marginally realistic. Truth be told, they don't look like the work of a professional at all but resemble the product of an "Sunday artist". They're generalized, weak, stiff and manikin like, not to forget very poorly drawn. He attempts to excuse his drawing's weaknesses by writing that "These drawings were all done from the model under time constraints...I feel it is better to show the bad ones as well as the better ones so that you can see that we all have struggle with some problems." Instruction by negative example? Puh-leez! ~~ The author writes: "The most important thing I learned is that it is not necessarily true that if you draw a lot, you will automatically get better. The truth is, if you do it wrong, you'll get better at doing it wrong." A point that his drawings display over and over again in his book, because it's filled with nothing but figure drawings gone wrong. How did this book get published?

This second issue in the series Room 5, Arcade features reflections on female urinals and edible architecture; a consideration of scatalogical elements in the work of Kurt Schwitters; an analysis of hypothermia as a primary death fantasy; interviews with Richard Rorty and Dan Graham; an exploration of Fragonard's gravitational fantasy; essays and designs for museum architecture; and thoughts on Walter Benjamin, perspective, and the impossibility of writing. Arcade is a collection of essays, discussions, architectural design, and graphic projects that come together as disparate things and people do in an arcade*in Benjamin's arcade?*in their communal attempt to escape the conditions in the street. Drawing together work that reflects the commitment of the London Consortium to multidisciplinary research, Room 5 recognizes the need to analyze modern culture in its social context, with input and output from the human sciences, cultural policy, and cultural production.

              Book Description

Despite our reverence for wildlife, many of our most favorite species raise havoc in lawns and gardens from city to suburbia. This book solves backyard problems with squirrels, raccoons, deer, crows, insects and a host of other "pests" who raid backyard bird feeders and garbage cans, nest in chimneys, eat shrubbery, dig holes and tunnels in lawns, and attack garden foliage. George H. Harrison, award-winning nature writer, photographer, book author and consultant in the field of nature and outdoors, provides a natural history of squirrels and other problem critters so that readers can better understand the enemy. Topics covered include squirrels and deer raiding bird feeders, eating shrubbery and carrying Lyme disease; woodpeckers drilling holes in siding and roofs; rabbits destroying young trees, shrubs and other cultivated lawn plants; ticks, yellowjackets, wasps and ants biting, stinging and dominating sugar water feeders meant for hummingbirds; bears; raccoons; and more. Informative tips, devices and methods are explained that will lead to a peaceful coexistence with all animals, great and small.

4 out of 5 stars Squirrel Wars: Not Just Squirrels.......2007-03-09

The book says Squirrel Wars but it's a book about keeping other creatures out of your yard/garden as well. I was hoping it would be more comprehensive but since it gives tips on other creatures, I thought it had more value. Haven't gotten thru the whole book yet...too busy trying to salvage the bulbs that survived the squirrel attacks.

Finally, someone has published a guide to dealing with my backyard foes. For years, master gardners, nursery workers, etc. have told me there was absolutely nothing I could do to protect my flowerbeds and bird feeders from squirrels, pesky birds and roaming cats. After reading this book, I know what works and what doesn't. This book not only tells me what to do, I now have some good insight into what's going on in the minds of those little critters (I wish more authors would do this). Yeah!!

My only complaint: the title is a little misleading. I got this book so I could deal with squirrels. This book covers many more backyard critters than squirrels such as cats, crows, deer, raccoons, and so on.

5 out of 5 stars Squirrel Wars Too?.......2000-07-08

An invaluable book for any homeowner who's ever had problems with squirrels (enemy number one), rabbits, racoons, skunks, possums, deer, cats, rats, dogs, even birds, etc. Each section is dedicated to solving a problem with your animal of choice. And that's just it. It could have easily been called "skunk wars" or any other "animal wars" mentioned in this book. I guess he chose squirrels because they seem to be the most persistant animals to invade our backyard. They are truly clever. However, there's another "Squirrel Wars" book that deals with squirrels only, written in 1996, and the author's attempt to outwit them from raiding his birdfeeders. It's funny and serious. I highly recommend both Squirrel Wars. Enjoy while learning.

5 out of 5 stars "Must" reading for backyard gardeners & wildlife enthusiasts.......2000-07-03

Many favorite wildlife species wreck havoc on backyard gardens: Squirrel Wars tells how to solve a range of problems, from birds which raid bird feeders and squirrels which are geniuses at food to creatures which nest in chimneys and dig holes in lawns. Deer, squirrels, raccoons, rabbits, skunks and opossums are covered, with some remedies more effective than others.

              5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2000-06-09

this was a great book, hilarious funny, its very true

                              Book Description

Through this Handbook of Patristic Exegesis, the reader will obtain a balanced and cohesive picture of the Early Church. It gives an overall view of the reception, transmission, and interpretation of the Bible in the life and thought of the Church during the first five centuries of Christianity, the so-called patristic era. The handbook offers the context and presuppositions necessary for understanding the development of the interpretative traditions of the Early Church, in its catechesis, its liturgy and as a foundation of its systems of theology.

The handbook presents a comprehensive overview of the history of patristic exegesis. Apart from a general introduction to the major topics in this field, it contains essays by leading patristic scholars on the most important Church Fathers, such as Augustine, Irenaeus, Origen, Gregory of Nyssa, and others. The essays are supplemented by bibliographies of editions and studies on patristic exegesis published from 1945 until 1995. Together, these bibliographies form the only comprehensive bibliography presently available on this topic.

Now available in one volume. This one volume edition is an unabridged version of the two volume edition that was published in 2004 (no longer available).

                                  Book Description

For years, historians have talked about two women connected to the Yellow Rose of Texas legend: Emily West, the beautiful mulatto servant who allegedly distracted Mexican general Santa Anna to help win the Texas Revolution; and Emily West de Zavala, the rich white woman who employed her.

But were there really two like-named women, one white and one black, so close to the San Jacinto battlefield in April 1836?

Spanning the 1800s to the 1990s, Making Myth of Emily takes an unorthodox look behind this enduring legend and details how the Yellow Rose of Texas myth resulted from determined efforts to hide the racial identity of Emily West de Zavala. In compelling detail, Myth shows that Emily, the wife of Texas' interim vice-president, was beautiful, cultured, well-traveled, wealthy—and black.

                                    Book Description

First published in Paris in 1834, Journey to the United States of America / Viaje a los Estados Unidos del Norte América, by Lorenzo de Zavala, is an elegantly written travel narrative that maps de Zavala's journey through the United States during his exile from Mexico in 1830. Embracing U.S., Texas, and Mexican history; early ethnography; geography; and political philosophy, de Zavala outlines the cultural and political institutions of Jacksonian America and post-independence Mexico. de Zavala's commentary rivals Alex de Tocqueville's classic travel narrative, Democracy in America, which was published in Paris one year after de Zavala's. The narrative presents the first account of U.S. political culture from a Mexican point of view and constructs the first comparative political and historical framework for the relationship between Mexico and the United States.

In passionate prose, de Zavala argues for the incorporation of the true democratic ideals of the enlightenment in the fledgling Republic of Texas. He hoped Texas would meld the best of both Mexican and American cultures. de Zavala believed that if his colleagues who helped frame the Texas Constitution understood the complexities of democracy and the ideals that their state could achieve through a liberal, federal government that gave equal rights to all of its constituents: Native Americans, Mexicans, Euro-Americans, and free African Americans. The original text is accompanied by John-Michael Rivera's critical introduction and an English translation based upon Wallace Woolsey's deft translation, expanded and revised for the purposes of this volume.

Lorenzo de Zavala was an important Mexican politician who toured the U.S. in the early 1830s and wrote a book about it in Spanish published in Paris, apparently because the dictator Santa Anna wanted to kill him. Later de Zavala was the first Vice-President of the Republic of Texas.

In many ways the book is even more informative than de Tocqeville's "Democracy in America", although the opinions of the two men are similar about many matters.

The translation was only published in 1980 and is out of print. I hope a major publisher will pick up the book.

In Mexico, Lorenzo de Zavala was a reformer striving to empower the middle class; in Texas, he sought economic stability and hoped to restore his political career. Some Mexican historians praise Zavala's efforts to create a republic in Mexico and to improve the conditions of the lower classes, but most see him as a traitor because he signed the Texas Declaration of Independence. Anglo historians have generally ignored Zavala except for brief references. A few contemporary Texans admired his political talents, but most suspected his motives. Elected a delegate to the convention at Washington-on-the-Brazos, he signed the Texas Declaration of Independence, the only delegate who had previous experience writing a constitution and who had held office at both national and state levels. Fellow delegates unanimously named him vice-president of the new Republic of Texas. Forced to flee when Santa Anna approached San Jacinto, Zavala was increasingly frustrated by the new Texas government and its interim president, David Burnet. Shortly after resigning office, he died at his home opposite the San Jacinto battleground, his death attributed to recurring bouts of fever. He was only forty-eight years old. This new book offers new information and valuable insight into an often overlooked hero of Texas.
