Great Organization.......2000-04-12
This book is organized for the beginner (by color) but it is one of the most acurate field guides I have found. The evergreen and broadleaf keys are worth the price of the book.
Book Description
Chess Lyons' update of his classic guide on Washington and British Columbia for naturalists and nature enthusiasts alike. This guide identifies more than 600 common trees, shrubs and flowers. Line drawings, distribution maps and a wildflower guide are included.
Customer Reviews:
Mediocre.......2006-07-10
Although the plant descriptions are good, as is some of the other ancillary information, the line drawings are downright terrible-- terrible to the point that some plants are unidentifiable in the field based on the drawings. Admittedly, the photographic plates have some nice photographs of some of the species covered in the book, but given the limited photos and the fact that they are confined to plates and not adjacent to the plant descriptions, I expected much more. This is a decent book, but its drawbacks are too great.
The best field guide for NW plants.......2002-05-02
I am restoring 72 acres of wetlands on South Whidbey Island, WA - Earth Sanctuary. We have just put in over 4,800 plants, 59 species, as part of a 500-year plan to restore the property to mature old growth and promote maximum biodiversity. This is our guide for identifying and learning all the trees, shrubs, and flowers.

Local supplement to 'Trees in Canada'.......2001-08-18
Designed as a local supplement to what is now 'Trees_in_Canada' (aka 'Trees of the Northern United States and Canada') this book went through five editions before being extensively revised by the present author. This work goes deeply into the shrubs and subshrubs of BC and although it is not in the same league as 'Trees in Canada' it does look good.
It is a handy size, perhaps a trifle large for use in the field, but its nicely rounded corners compensate significantly. All the species treated are illustrated by a line drawing, which tries to keep a balance between giving botanical detail and giving an all-over morphological image and succeeds fairly well at this. In addition a section of color half tones is provided, which (as so often in this sort of book) gives the impression of having been added as an afterthought. These pictures would have benefitted from being printed at a, say, 30% higher magnification and against a lighter colored background: as it is these tend to drown in the all black pages. Nevertheless occasionally these color pictures do contribute.

A Year by the Sea: Thoughts of an Unfinished Woman
ASIN: 1580050409 |
Book Description
At age 31, having left a stifling decade-long marriage, Debi Holmes Binney set off alone into the harsh Utah desert to find direction and spiritual renewal. Armed with only basic supplies and her writing journals, she spent an extended sojourn in a place by turns physically terrifying, psychologically invigorating, and gloriously beautiful. Her moving account will appeal to both physical and spiritual adventurers.

Woman survives in spite of herself.......2006-06-07
Since it's been covered already, I won't get into the incredible lack of preparation and education of "her" environment Debi showed. I can only think she was being self-destructive. How else to explain such outright disregard for the wilderness and, dare I say, stupidity?
I couldn't put this book down, but only because I kept looking for some redemptive qualities. I have no idea what she learned about herself, she seemed to grow very little from her experience and her writing was less than inspiring. I kept waiting for her "Midnight Stalker" to take her out and deliver us all out of her and our misery.
One thing I appreciated was when she finally acknowledged the help she'd received and realized that "no man is an island." However, she continued to talk about how she had proved she could take care of herself. Ah...really? Without the wood stove and wood, not to mention the correctly-sized staples and staple gun and, oh yeah, the warm jacket, Debi would not have made it.
I can't remember being so frustrated by a book I've read. I guess that's something...
Speaking from the heart - listening from the heart.......2006-04-16
I am preparing to spend some time alone in the desert. As I looked through the stacks at my local library Desert Solitaire was checked out - but Desert Sojourn was there on the shelf and I checked it out.
Perhaps it is because I too am yearning for deeper meaning in my life and therefore am listening from the heart - but I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.
It takes great courage to sit with yourself without the escape routes of books, tv, radio, telephones, and all those other distractions.
I was puzzled by some of the reviews - I think they say more about the reviewers than the author.
This is a woman - who was in psychic pain - and she listened to the summons of her soul - and it led her to the desert and deeper into her life.
Because of my interest in Soulcraft (Bill Plotkin) and the work of the animas valley institute (animas.org) this book was a welcome addition to my preparation... and even more so - because I wasn't looking for it - it found me.
Thank you Debi... The world needs wanderers...
Five stars probably from her friends, but then.............2006-03-18
I wouldn't even give this book one star but there is no lower rating. The publisher is at fault for this disaster of a book (they never should have accepted it in the first place) that I hope will someday embarrass the author--the reason I hope that is that eventual embarrassment will show that the author has grown out of whatever strange mental land she was living in when she undertook this sojourn. Others have commented on her lack of proper clothing and equipment so I won't repeat that. What hasn't been mentioned are the food stores she chose to take seemed designed to be not only dreary and monotonous, but extremely constipating. It's as if she deliberately built in self-punishment and failure. I can't remember if she said she did any research before undertaking this fiasco, but it certainly doesn't appear that she did.
Debi, where are you now? In a far better state, I hope. Maybe you had to write this book to get there. Don't be disheartened by all the bad reviews. Sometimes we have to crash through the bottom to come out on the other side. And at the very least, you had the guts to do it, and that counts.
Great book, but frustrating as well.......2002-09-25
I greatly enjoyed this book...as a thirty-something myself who has gone through a divorce, I could relate to a lot of the emotions and the urge to find oneself. Debi's sojourn into the desert, or at least the concept, is one that I often daydream about as a way of searching out my soul and realizing my purpose. I think she has a lot of courage to face herself alone in isolation as I'm not sure I could sleep so many nights in the wilderness alone without dying of fright. The book was well-written, if not a little whiney, at times.
However, at the same time, I found numerous things disturbing. First, the author divorces her husband and leaves her child with him, except for holidays. Then she runs off with some literature guru who lets her live with him jobless and complaining for however long. Second, she goes into the wilderness ill-prepared for 40 days alone - no waterproof hiking boots, no warm jacket, etc. For anyone who has ever camped or skied in extreme conditions, they know that those two items are first and foremost on the survival list. What was she thinking when she brought Reeboks and cowboy boots? Third, she would've surely died had not the ranger and his wife provided her with a parka, wood stove and wood, and staple gun. Fourth, she spent half of her time hiding out in her shelter before realizing that she could occupy her time with creating a camp site area that would make her feel at home. It occurred to me while reading that this is the first thing I would've done - explored my area, created a home, and thus felt safe and comfortable.
Regardless of the frustration, this is a definitely a recommended book.
Disappointing |Sojourn.......2002-01-09
I opened the book with high expectations...What a terrific title...and what a shame to find such immature writing. I kept waiting for the moment when I could share the author's experience...when I could admire her...or sympathize with her..but honestly...a pet fly! A captivating topic...wasted!

London's War: The Shelter Drawings of Henry Moore - Reviews - Brief Article - Book Review
Contemporary Review, Nov, 2003
London's War: The Shelter Drawings of Henry Moore. Julian Andrews. Lund Humphries. [pounds sterling]25.00 p.b. 144 pages. ISBN 0-85331-844-1. Among the most popular visual pictures of the Second World War are those showing Londoners finding safety in the city's underground. These drawings were made between the autumn of 1940 and the summer of 1941 and came to number more than 300. Moore made them at the request of the War Artists Advisory Committee. Mr Andrews admits that not all the drawings are good but they do show how an artist came to terms with a situation in which people were 'having things done to them that they were quite powerless to resist'. Although the drawings began as a private affair based on a chance journey on the Tube, they soon became famous and a source of needed income. By comparing the drawings to actual photographs and by including much valuable information about the works, the artist and the war, Mr Andrews has given readers not just the first book on these works but a superb survey of the drawings and the artist behind them. Customer Reviews:
Excellent book for the someone new to the breed.......2003-11-03
This is an excellent book for those considering a Bracco as a pet. It provides a lot of good information about the breed, its history, and general health, training, and care. As I get more and more questions concerning bracco health (I am with the North American Bracco Italiano Club - www.braccoitaliano.org), I would have liked to see a little more health related information that is specific to the Bracco Italiano breed, but that is the only thing that kept me from giving this book a 5 star rating. The author did a very good job in researching the breed and providing a lot of good information. It is a very good reference and I definitely give it two thumbs up!

Book Description
Just what makes a Southern Christmas so special? Is it the festiveness of the South's acclaimed hospitality? What accounts for its unmistakable charm? Emyl Jenkins writes that the answer lies in the South's rich traditions and heritage. For Christmas in the South is not just a day -- it is a season. All other seasons pale before the joys of Christmas as it has been observed through the centuries, from the Colonial days to the Civil War to the present. Christmas traditions in the South are deeply cherished, but you don't have to be Southern born and bred to enjoy a Southern Christmas.
In Southern Christmas, Emyl Jenkins offers the timeless stories and histories, the sentimental lore and celebrations inherent to the region. In these pages are heartwarming and cheerful accounts that will bring smiles and gentle memories of your own Christmases to mind: mile-high stacks of grandmother's best china taken down from pantry shelves for yuletide parties and scrumptious meals...magnolia boughs, longleaf pine, red-berried hollies, and deep green boxwood gathered for wreaths and garlands. Indeed, decorations on Southern doors, windows, even tucked-away niches turn every scene into Christmas cards to greet friends and strangers alike.
Southern Christmas is a book you will cuddle up with by the fire and read aloud to your family. Emyl Jenkins takes you on a Southern Christmas journey from Maryland to Texas with more than 250 stunningfull-colorphotographs. She visits private homes, museums and restorations, grand hotels, and charming inns in her chapters on Southern Christmas trees, decorations, food, parties, weddings, gifts, and music. Woven through the text are Emyl's "Gifts to the Reader," providing beautiful decorating and luscious recipe ideas to brighten every home at Christmas. Emyl invites you into her home for Christmas dinner, takes you on a colorful tour of Opryland, and on a leisurely stroll in historic Williamsburg.
Emyl Jenkins' Southern Christmas is a Christmas treasure dedicated to all who share the joy, the mirth, and the love of the season.

Nice MCA Catalog -- B&W images of Dams.......2007-09-10
This is an nice but hard to find paperback catalog of the Black and White work of Toshio Shibata. Forward is by Staci Boris, assistant curator of the MCA exhibit (October 11, 1997 through January 4, 1998). Shibata was given a commission by the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago) to photograph the United States. Shibata approaches it with his own unique Japanese view. From the intro by Staci Boris "Organic, intuitive, and immediate, Shibata's images fuse the familiar and the extraordinary. While maintaining a contemporary sensibility, he transforms the real into something magical, mysterious, and altogether unique." Some of the Dams included are: Grand Coulee, Holter, Nimrod, Gibson, Cheoah, Weir, South Holston, Arrow Rock, among others. There are several photgraphs of the Grand Coulee Dam -- looking straight down the water flow into the river. As your eyes follow the water plunging straight down this incredible height, its dizzying. At the river, the white water forms shapes that are abstract and very interesting. Shibata's work is really incredible. If you are interested in his work, I highly recommend the book, "Landscape" and "Type 55" both by Nazraeli Press. I give this catalog only 4 stars because the quality of the prints are ok (for an inexpensive catalog) but much better/richer in his book "Dam" (this catalog shows many of the same images). Shibata has 6 monographs published and at least that many catalogs. Unfortunately I believe all are out-of-print.

Images of bizarre Japanese man-made landscapes.......2007-06-07
This book by noted photographer Toshio Shibata features beautiful, other-worldly images of dams, retaining walls, and sluices throughout Japan. The projects designed by Japanese engineers based on function nevertheless end up looking like radical surfaces. Very inspiring in an Erwin Hauer sort of way.

About This Book.......2005-10-19
Artist Book. One of the most important and most beautiful photography books of the year 2004. Limited Edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. The first and only edition. A stunning production by Toshio Shibata and Chris Pichler: Oversize-volume format. A very tall and large book. Deep green silk cloth boards with gray titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. An original silver-gelatin print is pasted on the cover's center. Photographs by Toshio Shibata. There is no text. Matching gray silk slipcase with deep green titles on cover and spine, as issued. Printed in Tokyo to the very highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents the photographer's dam photographs. "Well-known for his large-format landscape photographs, particularly those made in Japan, Shibata's photographs of mountain sides overlaid by concrete 'netting' and other engineering devices to prevent erosion and landslides are marked by their abstract beauty and sense of immense scale. Shibata's work has been widely exhibited and published throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. It has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and the Centre National de la Photographie in Paris. Toshio Shibata's photographs are included in major public and private collections throughout the world" (Publisher's blurb). Only a Japanese aesthetic and sensibility could make a dam look this vital and powerful, bursting with furious energy and radiating glorious beauty. A brilliant collection. © 2006, ModernRare.com
