Short Review.......2000-06-19
This review is simply in appreciation to Joe Roberts for a wonderfully wry and descriptive book of Southern India. My daugter is planning to spend a college semester in Kerala and I have been searching (mostly in vain) for an unbiased travel book on the area. Guide books don't convey the sounds, smells, color and people one meets. Three Quarters of a Footprint certainly does, in addition to informative footnotes explaining complicated history and religion. The only things which would have improved the book would be a better map identifying Joe Roberts' trips to various towns and villages and perhaps some photographs. All in all, a very good read.

I started doing my family's genealogy about 2 months ago, and took out literally dozens of books from the library on the subject. This is the one I'm going to buy because it has such a great collection of resources, and easy to understand succinct chapters on the basic methodology of genealogy.

I am one of those people who are able to benefit from How To kinds of books. This particular book gives easy broken down steps to watercolor pencil techniques with plenty of room to explore and play with the medium in question. There is also a great balance of text and illustrations.
In my opinion the best part is the listing of different products and how they interact with each other and on different kinds of watercolor papers (it also discusses basic color theory and how to use it). It lists brand names so that you can purchase those products and experiment with them yourself. Most importantly is that it's presented in a fun and casual manner, so it takes away a lot of the fear if you're new at working with watercolor pencils.
Beautiful Book and Practical Instruction.......2006-11-05
What a motivating guide! This has easy-to-understand directives and doesn't seem overwhelming. At the same time, the examples are so wonderful and varied the "student" cannot help but want to practice more and more, allowing it to become an urge to take a pretty scene and turn it into something that can be shared.
I purchased this for my teen daughter (and to enjoy learning along with her) as a rich addition our homeschool curriculum. We enjoy sitting out on the deck and finding inspiration in our many trees, garden, the birds and squirrels, our beagles, etc.
The author is very gifted and conveys her love of nature and capturing a fleeting moment very well. She is also instrumental in showing how to cultivate a reader's individual artistic tendencies, even if they may feel they don't have any. This is preseted in a non-intimidating manner.

It's nice, informative but..........2004-06-01
I liked the book, but I wish it had more information or more examples, either by the author or by other artists in the medium. In order for me to really learn about the medium, I have had to buy not only this book but others about the same subject as well... It is not a problem with this book in particular, but a problem with ALL colored pencil books. All of them show a "part" of the what the medium has to offer. I wish there was a "compendium" of several authors about the subject, so we, aspiring artists, would have some sort of "big book" or "bible" about this.

When I first recieved a box of watercolor pencils as a gift, I had no idea what to make of them... I do passing fair work with colored pencils, but watercolors have always been beyond me. I muddled along, experimenting and tossing the miserable results, until I found this book. Oh, the joy! Finally, information on how to get the most out of my creations! It's never to late to start.......2001-11-28
I've started using some of the recommendations on my 12 year old Golden & there is definately some improvement! (He seems younger now than he did a year ago).
A GREAT BOOK! Takes a week or two to start noticing improvements. Well laid out and concise.
No index at the back, so difficult to quickly reference info. However, book is well laid out so that once you're read it you have a good idea of where to find information.
Would be helpful if there was an "update" website - or some way of getting more current information - as science is always finding new information.

Good examples of molded utilitarian stoneware 1880-1920........1999-03-12
Book illustrates good pictorial examples of molded utilitarian stoneware (pitchers, butter crocks, pie plates, etc.) made between 1880-1920. Artwork, flowers, birds, etc. decorations are usually molded into these pieces. Most illustrated stoneware is first covered with white glaze and then with additional diffuse colored glaze usually blue. Some pieces use various solid colored glazes. A few illustrated pieces use stamped blue decoration over white glaze. This book, however, does not really deal with true salt glaze, hand decorated pottery prior to 1900. For this reason the title could be somewhat misleading to some collectors.

This book is worth owning for the photography alone! I own the Australian version (with the relevant 'hardiness zone map') and I recommend that any buyer of this book check the edition they are buying to ensure it is relevant to their location. While most experienced rose growers will have some idea of what will grow where, those seeking to establish roses for the first time will certainly find a relevant locality guide useful.
Roses are beautiful flowers and the plants themselves are fairly drought tolerant: an important consideration for those of us living with ongoing water restrictions.
I bought this book for the photographs as much for the information it contains. Other books will provide rose gardeners with more specialised information. But this is the book to turn to if glorious colour photographs inspire you.
The size and format of the book makes it more a coffee table book than an everyday guide.
If you like roses, you'll love these photographs.

Beautiful, Extensive, and Exhaustive.......2005-02-02
At one level it is a coffee table book. Its large format, heavy glossy white paper, and crisp photography all put it up there with the best gardening 'picture books.' At another level it is a reference. Only Modern Roses has more entries - but it costs much more and has few if any photos. And it is the photos that make this book a great one. It may be the best single source of rose photos one can get at any price.
The entries are spare, but there is very little crucial information missing. Virtually every entry indicates whether the rose is vigorous and which diseases it is prone to suffer. When roses fare better in one climate than another, Botanica tells you so. If a rose has fragrance, it says so. If a rose is spindly and lacks adequate foliage or branching, it will usually be indicated in the entry.
The entries have been scrubbed clean of personal bias as one would expect of a good reference. Unfortunately, it is a rosarian's personal connection with a rose that really makes reading about roses fun. Thus, most people who like to read about roses will find Graham Stuart Thomas' Book on roses more engaging, despite the comparative lack of photographs. Most will also find Stirling Macoboy's Ultimate Rose Book more engaging for the same reason. Even Claire Martin's 100 Old Roses and 100 English Roses have a litte more zing.
My interest in growing roses started around the time I picked up The Ultimate Rose Book. And it's still a good one to consider. It may be the closest thing to this book; but the photography in Botanica's roses is more accurate, more colorful, and far more exhaustive.
If one has to choose the first book to get when starting down the path of growing and enjoying roses, this might be the best.
Botanic's Roses The Encyclopedia of Roses.......2003-02-13
It is a beautiful book and if that is what you are looking for this is a great book. However, Amazon forgot to mention this is for Canada. Page 21 displays temperate zones for (CANADA ONLY). Again Page 21 "Zones 9-12 do not occur in Canada"? Many roses in this book are zones 9 and above---what is the temperature of 9 and above????? I live in the USA. ... Its still a beautiful book. Amazon should have made it clear it is a wonderful Canadian Book.
Botanica's Roses.......2003-02-13
I looked at the reviews and they where excellent. I bought the book and it has wonderful pictures. However, nobody mentioned that it is for Canada. It has a wonderful picture of Canada and its temperature zones . The difficulty is I live in United States of America. The book is for Canada period. Yes, it is a nice book, but it has to relate to USA, and this book does not. Each flower mentions a zone for growing, it mentions zone 9 numerous times. However, the book says on page 21 "Zones 9-12 do not occur in Canada" ? I tried to relate zones in my Great Western Book to the temperatures of the Canadian zones. Zone 1 in Botanic is not the zone 1 in Great Western, we are comparing Apples to Oranges. Yes I like this book. If I lived in Canada it would be a must. I am very dissapointed that Amazon did not show page 21, the Canadian Termperate Zones, if they had I would never have bought it.
Now, This Is A BOOK!!.......2002-08-19
WOW! Was I shocked when this huge bundle of joy showed up at my door! I anticipated a lot of pics but holy cow! I was able to use this hummer to identify 2 roses I had scoured other resources for in no time! (So far I only have 40 roses.)
It is beautifully written and the photos--pure eye candy! I adore roses so it was like giving a gourmet dinner to a starving person.
Those are the good points. I only have 2 nit-pickies that are hardly worth mentioning because I ADORE this book and recommend it 100% to any and all garden lovers. 1) The Cd-Rom tweeked on my computer--probably because I have version Windows ME..., 2) on the rose descriptions they forgot to share how big the roses would get. They used words like " a medium shrub". I figured that they meant about 5 feet but if you dont know roses its a necessary tid-bit.
So there. if you are unsure of spending the hefty sum on this book, don't think twice...BUY IT TODAY--And BTW Amazon has it the cheapest. GO ROSE HAPPY!! Do it...you won't be sorry.

Outstanding and inspiring references to great roses.......2004-09-20
This is, in its organization, a dictionary of roses. Look up any rose by name -- you need know nothing more than that -- and you'll find a brief of the rose's attributes. If you don't find the name in the dictionary, check the fine index, which includes the alternate names under which a rose may be known. Many, but not all, roses are also shown in a serviceable photograph. Some photos run to the small side, but the descriptions ably pick up the slack.
Interestingly, a number of the roses listed here are not included in the most recent American Rose Society Handbook to Selecting Roses. A number of beautiful, but not common, plants should receive a boost by their treatment in Botanica's Roses. And gardeners will receive a healthy shot of inspiration from the many descriptions and photos.
This is a small, but thick and very sturdy book. It bears up admirably under my hours of perusal and under the more than occasional frantic fumbling that ensues when I run across a rose I do not know. A great gift for a rose gardener or a very enjoyable, inexpensive, and useful treat for yourself.
Decent book.......2004-06-20
Decent book, good photos, easy to carry to a nursery. It is designed like a "dictionary" of roses. I like it better when they are organized by rose catagory ( old roses, hybrid tea etc) but this is a nice book none the less.
A rose by any other name..............2003-04-07
A beautifully illustrated and fact-filled book on the myriad of extraordinary rose cultivars. The book is a feast for the eyes and truthfully a bargain for it's price considering that most books cost more and do not even approach the detailed information and unbelievably beautiful photos of hundreds of cultivars. This book is replete with cultivars from landscape roses, hybrid teas, floribundas, miniatures, species roses, and even vines.
They are all covered and fully illustrated!!!! A true encyclopedia for the rose afficianado that one will enjoy looking at over and over again!!! It will help you find that perfect rose for your landscaping needs. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I do. :-)

I was pleasantly surprised when I received this book. The pictures are nice and clear and seems organized well. Even though it has information about hundreds of roses, it seemed to missing a few of what I thought were fairly popular roses. All in all it's a good reference book for the beginner.
A Great Value.......2001-06-15
For a book to have as much color photography as this book does for under $... is truly amazing. I have done much of my rose garden by year of introduction and have found this book extremely useful. I do searches on internet sites or rose lists, and then locate the roses in this book to see what they look like, as well as other tidbits of information such as disease-resistance, repeat-bloom, hardiness etc. The book does include year of introduction in its summary, but lists the roses alphabetically so one can easily find them. I also noticed the index in the back of the book lists many roses by their synonym names which is helpful when another source you are working with calls the rose by a different name.
Very little information in terms of how to care for a rose exists in this book. You will have to purchase other books for that. There is only so much information one can pack into a book and still keep it portable!!

The project that Tiravanija developed for the Secession in Vienna takes Rudolf Schindler's prominent Kings Road House in Los Angeles as its conceptual starting point. The result is a very shiny chrome space which acts as a node for the gatherings and activities of any number of people.
