Excellent, provides everything from mileage to maps to descriptions for every inch of the AT.......2007-04-05

I have 2 books in this series, and have frequently used photocopied pages from them on my AT section hikes. I never needed to buy the AMC versions of the maps since comprehensive maps are provided within this book, along with mileage charts for road crossings, springs, campsites, landmarks, etc. for every section of the Trail.

Although this book is obviously geared for the day-hiker or overnighter, it has also come in handy on my longer hikes. And the writers have narrowed down every section into either 1- or 2-day hikes, along with directions to the trailheads (even in the remote 100-Mile Wilderness section in Maine!), proving that the AT can be enjoyed by casual hikers as well as hardcore mile-crunchers.

Cons: This book, and the others in the series, is seriously due for an updated edition. Lots has changed along the trail even in 8 years. (carrying up-to-date pages from the ALDHA Thru-Hikers' Companion is necessary to have the full info). Also, the maps are two-color, making certain features hard to read, i.e. roads are the same color as elevation markings.

PLEASE NOTE: THERE are NOT 170 hikes in the book. The whole series must contain that many.

I own 3 books in this series. The Southern Appalachian, the Virginias, and the Mid-Atlantic States guide. I have found these books to be a great aid in planning hikes, especially 2-3 day backpacking trips. Since most of these hikes are either one-way or round trip (as opposed to circuit hikes) you either need to have two cars or plan on seeing the same sites twice. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but other books have better circuit hikes.

This series IS very informative, not only with regards to the actually hike, but also the history both natural and otherwise of the area you are hiking in.

I have only done a few of the hikes in the Mid-Atlantic Guide, all of which have been out and back day hikes, and this book has been very informative during these hikes. The maps could be a little better, as they are topographocal maps with a green line for the trail.. They are adequate, but I've seen better.

All 41 hikes come with a description, a map, an elevation profile, and an itinerary, as well as various other information.

When planning for a hike I do tend to use this book in conjunction with other books, but I usually take this book (or copies of the pages) on the actual hike itself. The fact that the pages are so small allows for easier handling and storage of the laminated pages during the trip.

So if you enjoy hiking and are near the AT while in PA, you may want to take a look at this book. It is well worth the money.

Must-have for scout leaders / Excellent for planning hikes.......2003-12-08

It is clear that these authors were not kidding when they stated that they have a love affair with the Appalachian Trail. The descriptions not only cover all you need to know to be prepared to hike a certain section, but there's lots of history and local color as well.

I've used this book successfully to plan hikes for a youth group. I must admit I disregarded the advice that a certain section (Knife's Edge) was not for those suffering from vertigo and sure enough, the group of kids I took on this section included one who suffered severely from fear of heights. But the kids worked together to get through that section and all was very well in the end.

This book is by no means dry. Sprinkled here and there are humorous passages, like the classification of vampire rocks versus jumping rocks. A pollution-damaged section is described as "shaved clean."

An experienced hiker who has decided to hike section-hike or day-hike the trail between Harper's Ferry and the New York / Connecticut state line needs no other guide. I also recommend this book for the library of every youth group, particularly scouts, in this geographic area that would (or should) plan hiking outings as part of their yearly plans.

Excellent book for detailed sectional or thru hikes on AT.......1999-06-08

There are many books about the AT, but this one is superb for it's detail and attention to partial sections for hiking. Can be used for thru hiking as well. Gives day and overnight parking details, profile of terrain, degree of difficulty, recommended direction, water and shelter locations, topo maps, mileage etc. Everything that a hiker needs!! Excellent.

Another role of the artist.......2002-07-18

The paintings of Luis Caballero are now in the realm of shrines or altars to the plagues that merged as one in the form of AIDS in the 20th Century. These paintings and drawings are not grotesque: these works are packed with the immediacy of facing a finite life whether that terminal state is due to disease as in the artist's case or to other horrors such as wars, brutality, homophobia, random acts of violence. Caballero was a brilliant draughtsman and captured so much movement in his line that the figures, though languishing, still maintain a quality of constant movement. Edward Lucie-Smith adds his usually fine comments to this monograph. This is one collection of art that goes beyond just being art to being an homage to the artist's plight. And isn't that what great art is, afterall?

A Tortured Vision.......1999-12-06

This book is richly illustrated with beautifully coloured reproductions of many of Caballero's paintings. Mostly they show the male, wounded, in a sort of ecstasy of pain. They are powerfully erotic, but in the distanced way that we see in Bernini's St. Theresa. Caballero, however, uses paint, not marble, so the paintings are hotter, more immediate. Edward Lucie Smith's essay, all too brief, convincingly sets Caballeros' work in the context of a brutal South American experience, and in world art generally. Caballeros' death from the results of AIDS adds a poignancy to this stangely moving book.

Too much about dogs in general-not enough about Clumbers.......2007-06-30

It is almost impossible to find books about this rare breed. Given that, I almost hate to give this a rating of 3 stars, but it was disappointing. They do give some good info on the breed, but they dilute it with generalized info on getting dogs that shows up in every book they print on every breed.

This is a wonderful dog breed. If you are seriously considering Clumbers, go ahead and buy the book (used, if possible), but also take the time meet the breed and interact with it. Also go to the breed's official site via the AKC's site link. There is a great book, Choosing a Dog for Life (Well Mannered Dog), that also gives great information on Clumbers (as well as on all other breeds).

Good pictures of great Clumber Spaniels!.......2002-01-08

This is a wonderful book for breed enthusiasts. Both of our Clumbers have some of these dogs in their pedigrees and it was nice to see pictures of this "older generation".

A bit weak on the breed.......2007-06-30

It is hard to find books on rare breeds, especially on Clumbers. If you are interested in the breed, go ahead and by it (used, if possible) or borrow it from a library. But, also visit the official website (link found on the AKC's official site) and read the book Choosing a Dog for Life (Well Mannered Dog) which has excellent information on many breeds.

The Clumber Spaniel is a wonderful dog breed!

A very nice book. Easy too read, extensive, describes all you have to know about bringing up a puppy, and MANY BEAUTIFUL pictures. I missed more detaild facts of the Clumber.

Useful, durable.......2007-03-21

If you are a garden designer or like to have a quick visual reference while planning a garden, this is a great book. I don't believe the intention is to provide extensive information, instead this is to be used a resource that is quick and easy. I currently spend a lot of time working on designs for my friends' yards and they love it when I bring this book over. The fact that I am able to show them quick pictures of what to expect is so nice to someone that does not have a "green thumb". Take the book for what it's worth....not all of them are trying to be college text books, and that's a relief.

Good general plant selection guide for beginners.......2006-08-01

This attractive handbook is a basic guide for beginning gardeners for selecting plants that will do well in the state. Plants are arranged alphabetically in sections of Annuals, Perennials, Trees & Shrubs, Roses, Vines & Groundcovers, Bulbs, Corms & Tubers, Herbs and Ferns & Ornamental Grasses. Each plant profile includes a nice color photo and minimal information on growing conditions, tips and cultivar recommentations. An okay guide for the beginning gardener - if you are looking for in-depth information, you may want to look elsewhere.

Harvesting Hope tells the tale of Cesar Chavez, but more than that, it reveals the power of collective bargaining and fighting for what is just in the world. As a children's book, it has appeal as a well-illustrated biography, an important history lesson, a story of family and personal triumph, and a book with a message. Chavez's crusade took place several decades ago, but the plight of migrant farm workers remains, despite the tremendous inroads Chavez made with La Causa. The story of Chavez's childhood, hard days of labor, and fight for worker's rights is timeless, and Kathleen Krull's award-nominated book deserves a place on every child's bookshelf.

This is a great picture book for all ages. The heroic story of Cesar Chavez is left out of most U.S. history classrooms, save those in California. This book would be an enlightening addition to any classroom or children's library.

Si Se Puede.......2005-06-08

Let's begin by saying that the drawings are super and captivating. Yuyi Morales creates characters that show emotion and the result is a drawing of emotion from the young reader. As the title implies this is the story of Cesar Chavez who many adults came to know about from his work with the farmworkers in California. This story humanizes the man by beginning in his childhood. The roots of the farmworker leader are explored as a young person traveling from crop to crop , from state to state. A drought in Arizona began the family oddyssey that would result in Caser Chavez becoming familiar first hand with the troubles of the farmworkers. Life on the road became a harsh reality. The treatment he encountered in school forced him to drop out in eighth grade but the treatment in the fields wasn't much better, at times it was much worse. This is simple story about a complex problem that one man was determined to overcome. He wanted justice for farmworkers and organized. He became to Mexicans what MLK was for civil rights, for Mexicans it was an extension of civil rights. This is a beautiful book for young readers or those not so young that are learning to read in English if they have a reading foundation in another language. Although it is recommended for children ages 6-9, middle school students, ages 9-12, especially those with limited English proficiency can benefit from this story well told. For the teacher or parent this book can help instill pride and understanding as to how determination, perseverance and hard work can overcome even the greatest odds.

I recommend this book for anyone 4 and up (adults included!) Beautiful illustrations and a wonderful telling of an important part of history.

This story is a wonderful way to teach children about the people who have made a difference in our world. People like Cesar Chavez. The story beautifully illustrates how Cesar did not use violence to solve problems but rather he used his mind, as his mother had taught him. The illustartions are vivid and real. The story is well written and teaches an important part of California history in a wonderful way. It reaches the heart of all ages. This is a great book for any elementary school classroom library, even High School.

This book has it's focus not on the development and playing of Irish traditional music, but on the people who play it. An outstanding narrative of a musician that is inspirational to anyone who plays this music. Also full of beautiful photography that shows the reader what Irish music is in the session, and how it was meant to be seen/heard.
