Crews is unique in the proper use of the word.......2005-12-13
I discovered Harry Crews a few years ago and I have read everything I could find on him or by him. He captures the Red Neck culture and the body builder culture and the no holds barred hedonism of the trailer park culture. If you think stereotyping is wrong then he is guilty of this poetic license too. But it makes for an unusual read. Maybe there is something wrong with me for liking this but I don't care.
Well-Named.......2000-05-15
This a collection of mostly older essays (from the 70's) that nevertheless deliver the same punch that readers have come to expect from this South Georgia native and resident wild man novelist. If you want the insider's perspective on subjects such as cockfighting, dogfighting, raptor training, insanely heavy drinking and occasional womanizing, this is the place to go. A warning: Crews is not for the weak hearted. His ability to relate realistic violence has influenced the likes of Robert Morgan (of recent Oprah fame) and Larry Brown.

important scholarly contribution.......2007-10-09
The book offers a nice introduction to the artist's life and times. Also provides excellent insights regarding the workshop and distinguishing between Rembrandt's art and that of his pupils. The scholarship is indepth and apt, most of the writers being part of the Rembrandt Project. There are 83 separate plates (most in color) with wonderful essays and explanations.
If you can't see Rembrandt in person, this is the book.......2006-10-10
This box set is the most prized possession on my bookshelf. I could not possibly do the pictures and information in this book justice with words. Some of the most amazing detail photographs of Rembrandt's surfaces that I have ever seen.

You'll learn a wide variety of ground training exercises suitable for both English and Western horses. In-hand section:

Customer Reviews:
Great for Beginners.......2006-04-20
Only new to the horse training realm and this book with it's well laid out structure and diagrams has been invaluable. It is also easy enough for my 12 year old daughter to understand and use.
A Must for Every Equestrians Bookshelf.......2006-03-23
I can never get enough of books with exercises that challenge both my horse and I. This book is one that every Equestrian should have, whether for training purposes or just getting back in shape. Half of the Exercises are really basic and a waste for an intermediate to advanced rider, but then again I guess all horses can use a few lessons in the refresher courses. The last 30 Exercises focus on long lining which I use on all my younger horses. They advance from driving a horse in a yin yang pattern to change direction to Figure 8s and Lazy 8s (just a flatten figure 8). Eventually the horse graduates to haunches in and shoulders in. I find that even more advanced school masters benefit from these exercises.
Valuable addition to any equestrian library........2004-01-12
Spice up your ground work with this educational guide and develop a better relationship with your horse in the process. There are often days when we perhaps don't have the time to ride, but instead of just longeing around on the circle we could be more constructive - this book can help you. I find this book particulary useful when starting young horses.
good 4 students.......2000-05-25
I thought this book is very helpful in teaching people to use the longline.
WOW!!!.......2000-02-06
Never did I ever dream there was so much you could do with a horse free longing or long lining him. I have just purchased a racetrack thouroughbred and Lesson56 (sliding sidereins) has been particularly useful because he has a tendancy to carry his head up in the clouds hollowing his back and neck. It was almost as if when I put the sliding sidereins on he intuitively knew what I wanted him to do. Wonderful book!!!! This is one every horseman should have in his (or her) library.
Book Description
A fully illustrated guide to the time-honored art of training horses in hand.

Great training manual.......2007-01-30
Very easy to read and well explained book. Well worth a read. Reccomended
Lovely pictures and fires the ambition!.......2005-10-14
This isn't really a beginner's book - except as an example of something to aspire to, as it contains page after page of the most delicious equine eye-candy.
However, I disagree with another reviewer that this book is only for the professional. As well as being to some extent a 'scholarly tome', it contains some delightful anecdotes and pictures of goats, dogs, ponies and horses not of 'classical' type performing "haute ecole" movements.
In addition, it contains some simple exercises to maximise athleticism and suppleness that any eager horseman could try, whether their equine be a Shetland pony or a Baroque stallion.
Well worth reading!
GREAT, but for professionals!!!.......2002-10-25
I'm a reader from Germany and I've met Richard Hinrichs a few times. He actually gives some of my friends lessons and I think he's one of the greatest horseman of the 21st century. His book is well-structured and easy to understand and you can almost "feel" the sensitiveness in his way to train horses, but it's necessary that everybody who want to go "his" way with horses had lessons in the past and experiences with this kind of classical dressage.
So is this book really great for professionals and for look up in connection with a professional training but bad to get completely new in this science!!!!!!!!!!!
GREAT!.......2002-10-25
...His book is well structured and good to understand, but it's better to have more experience in working with horses and especially in classical riding. Who don't want to ruin the horse has to take lessons by an well trained horse man, before...
But: The book is really great, check this out!!!!!

Whether you're purchasing a new home with a large yard or you're living in an apartment with a tiny patch of weeds, Garden Makeovers can help you turn your outdoor space into a beautiful, workable plot of personal paradise. Presuming you already have something to work with, this book takes you step by step through the outdoor renovation process.
The authors note that "a garden is probably one of the few areas of your life where you can express yourself." Read the first chapter and take a good look around. Even if your thumb is more brown than green, you can learn to recognize, work with, and even conquer your yard's limitations.
The second section helps you determine whether your garden needs a quick fix or a complete overhaul. Potted plants and herbs, nearly mature trees, rustic panels or arches, and a coat of paint on that old shed can turn your so-so garden into a lovely bower in little time. The third chapter tackles problem-solving (what kind of plants are best for sandy soil?) and the fourth more elaborate projects. If you're feeling like Martha Stewart, you can even design a formal English garden or a medieval maze.
The full-color photos are inspiring and the language clear and helpful. With a go-to attitude and the proper tools (there's a whole section on what you may need), you can create a garden that reflects your unique style while complementing your home and your yard's natural resources. --Dana Van Nest

Book Description
Bob Woodward made Jean Houston national news in the summer of 1996 when he revealed her working friendship with Hillary Clinton. Mrs. Clinton, Woodward reported, connected most enthusiastically with Dr. Houston and anthropologist Mary Catherine Bateson when they met with the Clintons at a Camp David retreat that also included presentations by Marianne Williamson, Anthony Robbins, and Stephen Covey. Dr. Houston subsequently consultedregularly at the White House, especially helping Mrs. Clinton with herbestselling book It Takes a Village.
The tabloid press had a field day, but the sensationalistic coverage onlyrevealed how out of touch the popular media are with the profound role that advanced psychology and spirituality play in people's lives today. Jean Houston is at the cutting edge of the work on realizing the fullness of our human potential, which is as mainstream and pervasive in our culture ascomputer technology.
A Mythic Life presents Jean Houston's real story and her true teaching. Here draws on her personal history and vast cultural knowledge to show how we can experience in our own lives the greater human story that is revealed myths and discover our real potential.
Customer Reviews:
One of My All-Time Favorite Books!.......2006-11-25
This book is an absolute gem. A mind-blowing, fascinating autobiography written by a master storyteller and teacher, conveyed with great intelligence, detail, passion, and humor. Highly recommended.
What Script Do You Want to Live Out?.......2006-06-24
Profound as always is Dr. Jean Houston! Your life can be as mythic as the triumph of Jason of the Argonauts OR as tragic as the Greek fall of Icarus ... you decide. Life deals you cards at birth that you can't change. But you can play them to the best of your ability in each moment ... towards a Royal Flush. You decide.
What better way to describe Sister Jean Houston? Revised!.......2005-10-03
After hearing the esteemed, distinguished artist, poet, preacher personality as narrator and inter-locature for Deepak Chopra and James Hillman, I've read or listened to her everyday for months! Their tour of "Mythical Journey" came to Glen Memorial the EMORY Campus Church with packed house. There was a stage full of video cameras++ beautiful backdrops for a future TV show on NPR!
Listening to her dialogue with Deepak from "The Evolving Human," becomes obvious how Houston is continually evolving in her naive talents: "for writing limericks, cooking gourmet meals or being able to talk to dogs." In fact, one of her many books is The Use of Spiritual Theraphy with Animals! Her epic-autobiog, A MYTHIC Journey has exceeded any possible evaluations in hearing her at Glen Memorial.
The high-light Chapter of Altered States lifted me thru her own experience under LSD in Greenwich Village with a guide, Michael Corner, empowering her to use a dramatic exchange as part of her practise of pschotherapy! Those pages carried me smack into the request of help from eminent Gestalt psychologist, Fritz Perls to visit him in his Central Park Apartment. All these incidents were encouraged by Margaret Mead.
Her Mentors from age 12 included awesome, Tielhard de Chardin, she knew only as, "Mr. Tayer," Joseph Campbell, Paul Tillich, Reinhold Niehbuhr, Margaret Mead, Martin Buber. Then I read that she conversed with Helen Keller, Annie Sullivan, Mother Teresa, the Aldous Huxley Family.
It strikes me, she just as well included: The OT Prophets, Major Poets of England, even Jesus' disciples in the NT!
What an awesome, brilliant, encouraging, inspiring, genius of one single-minded personality! Semi-retired Chap. Fred W. Hood
A Mythic Life Is A Wild Ride.......2001-03-13
Readers of this book will have sharply diverging reactions to it, and I myself am of two minds. At her worst, Jean Houston can come across like a precocious and hyperactive college kid: flip, full of herself, flaunting exuberance, self-promoting, greedy for catharsis, disorderly ideas sprouting everywhere like psychedelic mushrooms. On the other hand, at her best, she's brilliant, scholarly, profoundly creative, wise, kind, and funny. On the balance, happily, I found the latter set of characteristics predominant here, although the less attractive side of her nature will be readily apparent to anyone unsympathetic to her style and her philosophy. This is an autobiography of sorts, although one in a style that only Jean Houston could conceive: utterly non-linear. What she actually gives us is series of anecdotes from all stages of her life, interspersed chaotically with a fireworks display of philosophical musing, human potential pep talks, New Age proselytizing, scientific speculation, and lectures on her original brand of mystical anthropology. Interestingly, she's the daughter of neither a scholar nor a mystic, but of an itinerant Hollywood gag writer, whom she loved dearly and who ran the family like an overbearing-but-lovable gypsy king. Numerous accounts of his lautish stunts pepper his daughter's book and bring comic relief. He was a direct descendent of Sam Houston, the flamboyant Texan general and politician, laying down a genetic strain that seems not at all improbable once you begin getting a sense of what Jean Houston is about. Of her retiring Sicilian-American mother, we learn very little. Dr. Houston's central animating idea, like that of her teacher and colleague Joseph Campbell, is that certain myths are universal among all peoples and all times, including our own, and they are the main drivers of psychological and spiritual essence of human existence. Exploring ourselves in light of these myths is key to fulfilling life - hence the book's title. Jean Houston takes this idea much further than Campbell did, and makes it the centerpiece of the teaching, lecturing, and mystical psychotherapy which has become both her life's calling and her business. This is compelling material and she presents it with eloquence and passion, despite the interference which her manic style at times brings to the narrative. I recommend "A Mythic Life", although it's not for everyone, and readers should be prepared for what they're getting.
Follow the Leader into the 21st Century.......1999-11-26
Through sharing fascinating details of her entire life and family, as well as people she has known and worked with, such as Margaret Mead, Jean Houston demonstrates vividly how we can all be more fully awake to our lives and the myths we all live by, whether we consciously know them or not. Reading her stimulates the reader to want more of her writings, which are plentiful and available. She also has a website worth pursing, at Jean Houston.org. An enjoyable read.

Book Description
Born in Ballycoan, Northern Ireland, Ruth Schwertfeger represents history and memory in an impressionistic memoir of her childhood on a small farm and attending a girls’ school in Belfast. Through the author’s girlhood and discovery of her own national and religious identity, this humorous memoir is shaped significantly by images of Schwertfeger’s father—"the Wee Wild One"—who spent his days in delightful mischief on a Purdysburn farm in the early 1900s. Schwertfeger provides her own interpretations of characters existing before her time and connects these and her own childhood memories in Ireland to her life today.
These unmistakably North Irish stories are unified by a common language, which also emerges as a touchstone that draws all Irish home. Schwertfeger’s voice reflects a shared and persistent desire for all Irish people to return to the roots that hold them, all the while appreciating her experiences traveling and studying European culture as an academic. She also explores many facets of social life in Northern Ireland that are often hidden behind the stereotypes of history and public rhetoric. Her stories convey a passionate and articulate woman seeking connect ions between the separations that occur through time.
