I read this cover to cover before I went on my trip to Rome and I was
able to visit some of the lesser known churches that are not normally
on the guided tours like St Prassede, and St. Pudenziana. It includes
a great deal of the history of many of the churches and I HIGHLY
recommend it to any Catholic heading to Rome.

Great album covers!!!!.......2004-07-10

This book and Film Posters of the 60's book go hand in hand. I think both, truly are a work of art. I've bought a bunch of these records at thrift stores and used record stores...and was enthralled by the covers...the smell of dust...starting to feel itchy after the first hour..starting to hallucinate...getting hungry...why doesn't this place have a bathroom...I told you, if you come along..I'm going to look through everything, so stop complaining.

Sound art........2003-10-29

You can see three hundred LP covers in this fascinating survey of sound track albums. The large size format (almost twelve inches square) means that the many whole page covers are just a bit shorter than life size, others are four to a page. The reproduction is excellent.

Plenty of these covers use the original movie poster illustrations, done by such greats as Bob Peak or Saul Bass. Ace cartoonist Jack Davis has seven covers including his most famous, for the 1963 movie "It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world". Strangely many great illustrations used on the poster or LP cover have no artist credits. Perhaps more than any other type of record cover sound tracks used a wider range of graphics and design and this certainly comes across looking through these colorful pages.

There are probably more than twenty of these large size paperbacks devoted to LP cover art published over the last few years and this sound track edition is worth adding to your collection.

Great book, with large 11 x 11 cover reproductions. Too bad they aren't actual 12 x 12 size, but other than that, this is one's a perfect 10. The best album art collection I've seen, without a doubt.

The content was sparse, but ok, as were the pictures. But for [the price] it was a complete disappointment! The book looks like one of the old, "golden books" of my childhood, and I was hoping for a bit more in the way of content for that price. But if you want something concise, with a few pictures, to put on your coffee table or for your child, this would be fine at maybe half the price. Maybe ...

I wish they would reprint this entire Survival! series, darn it. We found the Otter one in a second-hand store and my 3- and 5-year-old adore it. What you do is, as you read, you have to choose the animal's actions out of two or more options. Will he go up the bank or try to catch the slow fish, etc.? Whichever action you choose has a consequence. It is sort of a naturalist's version of Goosebumps "You Choose the Scare", and much more informative. The author makes it clear that pollution and encroachment of humans on animal habitat make for a greater percentage of dangerous choices, which is why some types of wildlife are disappearing. Even after my little boy "learned" which choices were safest for the otter to make, ensuring a "survival" outcome, he still wanted to read it again and again. Though my preschoolers liked it, I would actually recommend it for ages 4-8.

Of continental cities only Paris was larger during the Georgian era, while Dublin ranked next in size. It has long been the view of F.Lewis Hinckley that a thorough knowledge of Dublin furniture designs is a must in order to understand the source of a great many of the highly sophisticated metropolitan pieces currently found in British and American museums that carry London attributions. Clearly the volume outstrips what known London cabinetmakers could have turned out, while the English hinterland has yet to yield the names of artisans who could have worked at such high levels of design and execution.

A professional botanist and photographer, Page has selected more than 600 species for inclusion in this book. Chapter topics include history, cultivation, and the use of peonies in the garden. The peony species are presented alphabetically by their botanical names. Each entry includes geographic origin (most include the year introduced), physical description, season of bloom, and growing height. Chapters on tree peonies and hybrids are similarly arranged. The final chapter on where to see peonies lists gardens in the UK, China, France, and North America as well as peony societies from around the world. Appendices include a glossary and a thorough list of where to buy the plants. This is a lovely book, interspersed with beautiful color photographs of peonies in actual garden settings. It is thoughtfully arranged and easy to use and should answer any gardener's questions.

Catherine McAuley (1778-1841) founded the Sisters of Mercy in Dublin in 1831. Her letters are essential primary sources for readers interested in the life and works of this remarkable Irish churchwoman and in women's history and Irish church history more broadly. Whether McAuley is writing to family members, bishops, her solicitor, priests, lay coworkers, or Sisters of Mercy in Ireland and England, her letters reveal striking details about the church and society of her day as well as about her own spiritual convictions and unstinting personal service to poor, sick, homeless, or uneducated adults and children.

The Correspondence of Catherine McAuley, 1818-1841, is a new, fully documented edition of more than 320 surviving letters written by, to, or about McAuley during her lifetime. Drawn from archives worldwide and arranged chronologically, the letters are carefully transcribed and generously annotated, with brief narratives introducing each group. In her letters as well as in those of the other correspondents, one sees a delightfully human, affectionate woman; a compassionate, persistent servant of the poor and neglected; an astute businesswoman; and an unpretentious, humorous friend.
