The flower, paleontologists tell us, is an ancient innovation in the endless struggle of adaptation and survival; the earliest fossil flowers date to some 120 million years ago, long after the arrival of other forms of plant life (and, for that matter, insects). Their arrival heralded a new way for plants to go forth and multiply that was so successful that countless animal and insect species now depend on flowers for food, and flowering plants have spread across the face of the earth.

"We know that flowers are beautiful," writes essayist Sharman Apt Russell in this lyrical exploration of the flowering world. "We forget that they are also essential." In fact, the more we learn about them, the more essential the 250,000 known species of flowering plants appear to be to modern life. Scientists are only now beginning to understand the complex role of flowers in ecosystems, and their studies have turned up surprising discoveries (such as the fact that a single flower can produce more than a hundred chemical compounds, and that plants like the alpine pennycress and sunflower can remove toxic chemicals from earth and water). Russell takes us to laboratories and academic conferences, as well as sun-drenched fields and greenhouses, to relate the science and lore of flowers. She also warns that, with one in three species in the United States alone already at risk, flowers may well prove to be among the first victims of a mounting wave of extinctions.

Russell's poetic book complements standards such as Donald Culross Peattie's Flowering Earth and Peter Tompkins's Secret Life of Plants. Fans of botany, ecology, and plain good writing will find much of value in its pages. --Gregory McNamee

Book Description

An acclaimed nature writer reveals the secret life of flowers.

In Anatomy of a Rose, Sharman Apt Russell eloquently unveils the "inner life" of flowers, showing them to be more individual, more enterprising, and more responsive than we ever imagined. From their diverse fragrances to their nasty deceptions, Russell proves that, where nature is concerned, "wonder is not only our starting point; it can also be our destination." Throughout this botanical journey, she reveals that the science behind these intelligent plants--how they evolved, how they survive, how they heal--is even more awe-inspiring than their fleeting beauty. Russell helps us imagine what a field of snapdragons looks like to a honeybee; she introduces us to flowers that regulate their own temperature, attract pollinating bats, even smell like a rotting corpse.

In this poetic rumination, which combines graceful writing with a scientist's clarity, Russell brings together the work of botanists around the globe, and illuminates a world at once familiar and exotic.

4 out of 5 stars The secret life of flowers.......2006-09-17

This book is more about flowers in general than rose in particular. Russell has clearly researched the subject extensively, and done a very good job of distilling that research into of 230 page book. Russell's book is a precautionary tale - as the author says only one percent of the known flowers have been fully studied, and many will become extinct before we understand them.

Russell frankly discusses what the cost of this extinction to the planet and to humans means; the many plants which have medicinal purposes that will never be discovered. Also, the fact some parmaceutical companies are starting to take a keen interest in preserving the wilderness - but only because of the enormous profit potential from developing and patenting drugs made from these plants.

Flowered plants can teach us a lot, and I recommend this book to any one interested in nature, the history of plants, and the role of plants in evolution.

5 out of 5 stars a rosy read.......2005-10-01

When the prophet Muhammad ascended into heaven, drops of his sweat fell to earth and turned into roses. Apollo, the sun god, transformed a youth he coveted into a hyacinth after Zephyr, the god of the west wind, killed him. The Incas worshipped the sunflower as a symbol of their sun god.

Russell's fine book explains not only how all cultures and peoples have elevated flowers to the realm of the spiritual but also how flowers survived the rampaging dinosaurs and provided our earliest ancestors with their basic physical and spiritual needs: our Neanderthal ancestors buried their dead with blue hyacinth, yellow groundsel, knapweed and yarrow. Even then, we were looking for beauty and something higher than ourselves.

Russell shows us how the physics of beauty allows flowers to serve nature's needs in ways much more miraculous than the more mundane ones of Moses parting the Red Sea or the Greek legend of the North Wind fertilizing wild mares. Such manifestations of the divine are, the author explains, commonplace in the temporal world of flowers.

Russell, for example, shows how flowers are literally the fruit of life. Their pollen is 16-30 percent protein, 1-10 percent fat, and 1-7 percent starch. Because pollen has no sugar and contains a wide variety of vitamins and minerals, bees are on to a very good thing. So too are the flowers because the bees and similar insects spread their seeds far and wide. The same applies to such unattractive specimens as the skunk cabbage, the corpse flower and the stinking goosefoot. Russell's clear prose paints out their survival strategies as eloquently as he does those of other, more beguiling flowers.

Although the fable of the flowers and the bees is the most well known one of mutual dependence and coevolution in nature, Russell lists a breath taking variety of other ones, such as the yucca and yucca moth, which are so perfectly attuned to each other that they remind us of mating swans.

However, as a first rate writer like Russell knows, no good love story is complete without a crown of thorns. Because so many animals like to eat entire plants and not just suck their nectar or collect their pollen, the flowers have to develop effective defense shields. Typical of these is the way the fungus gnat is lured into a trap by flowers that mimic fungi. When the unfortunate gnat leaves the flower covered in pollen, the eggs are left behind to die of eventual starvation. This means there will be fewer gnats in the future to harass the "defenseless" flowers. That is not the only trick the flowers have up their collective sleeves. They use one animal variety to protect them from another variety and then they develop special chemicals to protect themselves against their protectors. And they are past masters of chemical warfare.

Russell's highly recommended book gives countless other examples of the fox being outfoxed. The water lily, for example, offers a banquet Roman in scope and delight to a wide variety of bees, hoverflies and beetles. Then, like the most treacherous lover, it tricks them into serving its own selfish own needs. The water lily is only one of the many examples of particularly strong iron fists being enveloped in very alluring velvet gloves that the author gives.

Perhaps we too, who are so foxy with nature, might end up in a trap of our own making. After regaling us with a lavish banquet that even the water lily might envy, Russell explains that there will be more environmental changes in this century than at any time since the dinosaurs became extinct tens of millions of years ago. Although we might cause the symphony of life and evolution to end sooner rather than later, Russell's fine book makes the point that flowers are probably more adapted for what lies ahead than we are. A cautionary tale, in other words, within a most pleasurable read.

5 out of 5 stars Science + Beauty = Flowers.......2005-01-15

Sharman Russell uses poetic language to explore scientific technicalities of flowers and related natural elements. Some of the more interesting facts revealed in the narrative telescope into the author's personal experiences. Against the backdrop of scientific fact, Anatomy of a Rose explores deeper issues of ecological harmony, sacred aspects of culture, and survival of species. A fascinating read, even for the least scientific of readers.

4 out of 5 stars A reference reading !.......2005-01-09

The flowers are somehow one of the multiple faces of the inscrutable nature . The admirable shapes enlist from the erotic orchid to the sunflower .

The poetry , painting , music , sculpture have empowered of them to magnify and heighten them . From Van Gogh to Rilke their sublime and brief presence has been inspiration motive to countless artists .

The author offers us invaluable appreciations about the flowers poetic .The similes described in the process of pollen ritual are true poems .

The flowers have drawings we can not see and reflect unthinkable colours .

If the flowers wouldn't exist from the human point of view , the world would be dead .

Acquire this singular essay , admirably well written and best expressed .

5 out of 5 stars Science and poetry meet in a rose.......2004-08-19

This wonderful little book is a revelation for anyone who has always seen flowers, but never understood them. Russell writes like a modern day Thoreau, deeply attuned to the beauty and wonder of nature. She marries her aesthetic appreciation of flowers to a scientific understanding of their secret, busy lives. Each chapter is filled to the brim with fascinating facts about how flowers behave - why they smell like they do, how petals and pollen work, even how dinosaurs may have been the midwives to all flowers today.

I read science books all the time, and few have the grace and appeal of this slim volume. Russell makes it clear that to those who will stop and smell the roses, the Earth is always an awe-inspiring garden, even on the darkest of days. A real treasure, I highly recommend it.

Sea Kayaking Virginia: A Paddler's Guide to Day Trips from Georgetown to Chincoteague by Andrea Nolan

Savario and Nolan are professional guides who have written two delightful guidebooks for kayak day trips in the area of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. The books document trips the authors have made a regular part of their itinerary and are written in a narrative style that is not only informative but makes for a great armchair tour for those nasty winter days as well. I found both these books at my local library and liked them so well they had to become part of my personal library. Enjoy!

Dennis Cooper, best known for his transgressive novels of gay teen angst and brutal sexual longing, has adapted one of his early short stories into this large-sized, punked-out graphic novel. Tracing the early career of Trevor Machine, rock star on the rise, Cooper manages to parody the L.A. teen scene as well as all of popular culture. The superb, surrealistic drawings by Keith Mayerson bring Cooper's descriptions and dialogue to new heights of demented parody and social commentary; it is if Antonin Artaud and Keith Haring took the wrong drugs and collaborated on a kids cartoon show. Horror Hospital Unplugged is artistic cross-pollination of the highest order: smart, shocking, and always just over the line.

Dennis Cooper, Horror Hospital Unplugged (Juno, 1996)

One has to wonder whether Cooper has the same morbid fascination for the movie Horror Hospital evidenced by others of my acquaintance. Why else would he name his wannabe-Nirvana characters after a relatively obscure (and not so relatively silly) British B movie from the seventies? This graphic-novel adaptation of a Cooper short story details the lives of four youths in a band called, not surprisingly, Horror Hospital. Their lead vocalist, Trevor Machine, seems to attract (...) men wherever he goes (and comes out with Cooper's favorite line, "But I'm not (...).", as many times as a number of his other characters, despite its ringing just as false; it would almost be refreshing to meet a single Cooper character who's secure in his sexuality), resulting in failed relationships that Machine mines for his self-obsessed lyrics. Things get even weirder when David Geffen takes note of the band, and Machine is visited by the ghost of River Phoenix. Folks, you can't make this stuff up. Except that Dennis Cooper, in fact, has.

The book is drawn by usually-competent artist Keith Mayerson, and there are certain panels where his competence comes through; for the most part, though, it looks rather like Mayerson was drawing in control-freak-Ronald-Searle mode, but without Searle's particular eye for biting satire. Coupled with the usual Cooper ulta-postmodern disdain for plot linearity, the whole thing ends up coming off, more than anything else, as hard to read, and not in the good way other Cooper works (e.g., My Loose Thread) are hard to read.

5 out of 5 stars Required Reading for Punks, Queers, and Artists.......2005-07-26

Keith Mayerson lends his vast artistic talent to Dennis Cooper's short story about a fledgling L.A. band and its confused singer, Trevor Machine. Mayerson's art swipes from a range of art and illustration, from symbolism to manga to advertising. The style changes as the story develops and Mayerson nimbly leaps from panel-based narratives to splash pages full of meandering, stream-of-conscious maps and montages. Some drawings are neat and tight, while others are scrawled, streaked, and scratched to abstraction - especially in the sex scenes, where bodies coupling (or tripling) become a manic mishmash of skulls, grotesque penises, and scattered ink blots. As seen in Spiegelman's Maus, Mayerson is clever in depicting some characters as animals or shapeshifting freaks. Dennis Cooper's story is a hilarious satire with some touching scenes and a sad ending, the tragedy of which is no match for the irony sculpted by Cooper. Trevor Machine goes into cult history as the sexually confused, angst-ridden teen of popular lore, in line with Holden Caulfield and Tommy Gnosis - and he has such a perfect ass.

One thing that has always added strength to the LEGO system is its near perfect backward compatibility. 'The World of LEGO Toys' carries some of this compatibility in that it is clearly written at a certain point of time (late 1980's) and yet much of the information is relevant today. It's a concise and colorful look at the company, its products and their affect of kids of all ages. It looks at the early days of integrating computers and LEGO bricks; offering a nice background for today's much more advance Mindstorms models. The book even touches on the subject of adults building with LEGO which is something that wouldn't really come of age for another decade, when the internet brought together older fans from around the world.

While the book is sometimes a bit too focused on the educational aspects of the LEGO system it is none-the-less a well-written and obviously well-researched work. It stands up today despite the many advances of the products and the little company that makes them. The full color pictures are a delight to look at and represent LEGO bricks in a wide variety of models. There are also a number of 'behind the scenes' photos that give you some sense of how LEGO products are made. I would highly recommend this text to anyone interested in the history of LEGO and how it has brought the system to where it is today.

I checked this book out from the library for my son who is 5 and LOVES Lego's. Even though the reading content is for older children or adults he loves looking at the pictures, which there are many of, including photo's of the Lego factory! The book also gives the history of the Lego company. Even though it is out of print I am going to have Amazon do an extended search for it as I am sure my son will get years of use from this book.

I checked this book out from my public library. It is one of the best written books I've ever read

5 out of 5 stars A great book of LEGO history........1998-10-10

I purchased this book a few years back mainly for the great illustrations of LEGO creations. But recently, I was taking a speech class and decided to do a speech on LEGO history, (because I like to be the odd-ball) and this book came in really handy. In fact, I didn't need any other sources of LEGO information other than what was contained in this book. The book takes the reader back to the very early days of the LEGO company, back when it produced wooden toys and follows the company into the late 80's. The book also discusses, in great detail, the Lego company's philosophy all of which I found very interesting. If you're into LEGO nostalgia, and want to see some great pictures of LEGO's and the Legoland Theme Park, I highly recommend this book.

                              Book Description

Worshiped like a film star by fans of his ultrahip and violent movies, reviled and condemned by the self-appointed guardians of mortality, Quentin Tarantino has become the cult hero of the nineties.

Using exclusive material from her interviews with Tarantino and those close to him, Jami Bernard traces his fascinating rise from high school dropout and B-movie junkie to the darling Hollywood, exploring the philosophy and mythology of the writer and director who has, with just a few explosive films, turned the movie world on its head.

With the furor over Reservior Dogs, the triumph of Pulp Fiction, and the bitter conflict over Natural Born Killers, Tarantino's meteoric rise has been perspective of those who have worked, played, and done battle with him, Jami Bernard looks beyond the media icon and reveals the man--and his message.

5 out of 5 stars The single best book about Tarantino.......2003-03-27

This book is a must-read for every true Tarantino fan.

Jamie Bernard's book is simply amazing. It covers Tarantino's life from childhood till about 1996. The book is well-written, and goes deep into detail and uncovers Tarantino's life as hyperactive kid, movie theater regular, fatherless child and genius moviemaker. This is the single best book ever written about Quentin Tarantino. No other book delivers such great information, biographical facts and stories about the making of his early movies and involvements in projects. If you want to read a good book about Tarantino, get this one first. It's the best!

                              trust me on this...

                              4 out of 5 stars A great scoop on Tarantino's beginnings.......1999-01-11

I just finished reading this book, and it is a fine work of reporting. It interviews people from both sides of the Tarantino debate (those who love him and those who hate him), and allows you to draw your own conclusions from all the statements. It covers Tarantino's life from his birth up to the moment when he made Four Rooms.

Too bad this book is out of print. I hope there will be a reissue in the future, probably covering the latest works of Tarantino.

                              Book Description

Bold, pioneering, and always unpredictable, Quentin Tarantino is the ultimate movie director with a fascinating story. This gripping account of his life and times describes a film buff determined to join the industry who studied, wrote scripts, and polished his already vast knowledge of all things cinematic by working in a video store. Tarantino stunned the world with his debut Reservoir Dogs, and his rise to fame is chronicled, as the hits kept on coming with Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, and Kill Bill. The whole of Tarantino's dazzling career, his motormouth reputation, and his latest chiller, Grind House, are revealed in a book which draws on sources close to the director, including Connie, Tarantino's mother.

A must read not only for fans of the hot shot director, but for anyone interested in the process that goes into making movies. My only quarrel is that it ends before the making of From Dusk Till Dawn or jackie Brown.

                                  Book Description

Irish Immigrants in the Land of Canaan is a monumental and pathbreaking study of early Irish Protestant and Catholic migration to America. Through exhaustive research and sensitive analyses of the letters, memoirs, and other writings, the authors describe the variety and vitality of early Irish immigrant experiences, ranging from those of frontier farmers and seaport workers to revolutionaries and loyalists. Largely through the migrants own words, it brings to life the networks, work, and experiences of these immigrants who shaped the formative stages of American society and its Irish communities. The authors explore why Irishmen and women left home and how they adapted to colonial and revolutionary America, in the process creating modern Irish and Irish-American identities on the two sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
