Customer Reviews:
Good Travel Guide With Strong Historical Perspective.......2007-07-02
"Southwest Ireland" by Catharina Day is a valuable book for anyone going to this beautiful part of Ireland. I travel frequently to this region (mostly to Limerick), and find this guide very informative for not only typical guidebook material (places to stay, eat, etc.) but also for more uncommon information on sights of interest. The single strongest feature of this book is in the historical background it provides. This book is far and away the best of commonly available guides to the region from a practical history point of view. It includes an interesting introduction explaining a history of Ireland, the status of the Irish Republic today, and a very helpful glossary of political parties and terms. Religious and political issues (obviously including Northern Ireland) are explained, and all this background helps a traveler appreciate the people and places in this wonderful country.
I obviously can't comment on the accuracy of the entire book, but the entries here align very well with the places I have been (King John's Castle, St. Mary's Cathedral, etc.) so as long as the book is uniform, it is very useful and accurate. The book is not without detractions, however. Except for the first few pages which contain color photographs taken from the area, there are no illustrations of the places featured. The maps are not especially helpful or detailed, either. For these reasons I gave the book four stars, whereas the text would easily garner five.
Travelers may wish to pick up another guide with more user friendly maps and better illustrations to compliment this guide. All told though, this is a great guide to Southwest Ireland, and I recommend it, especially for the history.

Great for teachers........2004-09-25
This book covers the first ladies from Martha Washington all the way up to Hilary Clinton. Each lady's biographical information is accompanied by review questions. Interesting information is included for each woman. Examples are: Mrs. Pierce had tuberculosis, Mrs. Arthur died from catching a cold before her husband was elected, and Mrs. McKinley had epilepsy. These assignments help students retain more of the information and the sheets are very easy for teachers to photocopy from year to year. Students are involved in direct recall and application of knowledge.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Research...need more Poster examples........2003-09-03
Excellent text research, I rate that 5 stars. There are not enough examples of artists work. Certainly this printing (3rd) does a balancing act of not becoming strictly an artist bio, it does cover the political/social also. Too much black and white and positioning of posters within the text is difficult. Some of the very dramatic posters are illustrated very small within the text while rather ineffectual mundane works are given full pages. Some are pages away from the reference. This book needs to be expanded in another edition, I would gladly pay more for a hardcover, coffee table sized tome with MORE posters illustrated. Yes this is certainly one of the more in-depth poster books available that does not succumb to being just a "picture" book with no reference. Overall an excellent work. Buy it, you won't be sorry...

a pocket guide to Keeshonden.......2001-05-27
The breed is not popular with Hollywood, so the selection of books are a rare find. This book is a good no-nonsense guide to Keeshonden. It includes basic information starting with the history of the breed, along with the CORRECT pronounciation of this name: Kayz-hawnd,(not keys-hound!), the behavior, caring for, traveling with, nutrition, diet, medical care, training, grooming, and raising Keeshonden (stud/bitch care). I particularly liked the extent the author took in writing a well written chapter on Before Buying a Keeshond. He went into whether the Keeshond is right for you? puppies vs dogs, male/ female, and pet or show quality. The end of the chapter went into the Keeshond with children, family, older people, and other animals. Included within the book there is clear photos of the dog, in reference to the point of the chapter. Examples of these would be the different colorations of the breed, puppies, grooming tasks, and training methods. Other black and white sketches were included for the reproductive track, medical care, picking up a puppy, and candid sketches. The Keeshonden pet manual is about 75 pages long, but was one of the better purchases for obtaining information on the breed. Rec. for further reading: the New Complete Keeshond, a textbook of information on the Keeshonden worldwide.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for those who want to know more about Keeshonden!.......1999-06-04
Carol and Ron Cash have done a wonderful job of presenting the updated history of the Keeshonden around the world. The great instructions and photographs on how to take care of your Keeshond are a joy to read. It is no wonder that Ron has won several Dog Writer Awards. The sections on Showing and Obedience training give a good view into these worlds with clear explanations of terms and process. This book is a wonderful addition to any Keeshond fancier's library.
Excellent, informative Keeshond book!.......1998-06-11
Ron and Carol Cash have put together an outstanding book on Keeshonds where the last book (The Complete Keeshond) left off. The book is put together in a logical format, and is easy to follow and retain the information as it is presented. I enjoyed reading about the origins, and then how the Keeshond breed spread worldwide. The book then details information about breeders in various parts of the US and Canada as well as Europe, Africa and Australia. This book is not a basic puppy book, its for those who already know what they want and where they are going to get it. The Cash's have done an outstanding job of presenting the Keeshond to the world through this work.
Book Description
This Special Limited Edition provides an insightful look at the history of the breed in Holland, England and the US as well as the breed's characteristics and the standard.
Customer Reviews:
More photos than text........2000-05-23
I was very disappointed and will be returning this book because it was little more than a collection of photos of various keeshonden. There was no valuable or unique information that could not be found in any general dog book. If you just want photos to scan or look at, take pictures of your own Keeshond, but if you want to purchase photos of someone elses, this book is for you.
The Guide is more about photos than instruction........2000-05-23
The guide had some very interesting information dispesed throughout the book, however it fell well short of my expectations. I had hoped for something specific to the breed that I could not find in a more general book about all breeds. What I found was mostly photos and a few paragraphs thrown in between. I gave it two stars for the photos, very glossy and well done, and one star for the writing. But this book for the pictures not the information.

1980 sixth printing.......2003-11-21
I will never regret owning this 250 page wonderful older book! There are dozens of B&W photos. First there are fascinating Kees-in-art and history pictures and then many individual and group shots of dogs and puppies. There are even "major fault"(referring to show dogs) detail pictures and a diagrammmed "ideal" show-dog!The text is thorough too. I'm sure newer editions have revised some of this book but I'd recommend Any edition you can afford to a Keeshond owner!
The DEFINITIVE book on Keeshonden!.......1999-09-14
Clementine Peterson does an excellent job of chronicling the Keeshond. This book has information on the early years of Keeshonden, and is truly a great reference work.

Book Description
Meryle Secrest, biographer of Kenneth Clark (“Riveting . . . enthralling” –Wall Street Journal) and Bernard Berenson (“A remarkable tour de force”–Sir Harold Acton), brings all her exceptional gifts to the story of Lord Duveen of Millbank. Her book is the first major biography in more than fifty years of the supreme international art dealer of the twentieth century and the first to make use of the enormous Duveen archive that spans a century and has, until recently, been kept under lock and key at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The story begins with Duveen père, a Dutch Jew immigrating to Britain in 1866, establishing a business in London, going from humble beginnings in an antiques shop to a knighthood celebrating him as one of the country’s leading art dealers. Duveen père could discern an Old Master beneath layers of discolored varnish. He perfected the chase, the subterfuges, the strategies, the double dealings. He had an uncanny ability to spot a hidden treasure. It was called “the Duveen eye.” His son, Joseph, grew up with it and learned it all–and more . . .
Secrest tells us how the young Duveen was motivated from the beginning by the thrill of discovery; how he ascended, at twenty-nine, to (de facto) head of the business; how he moved away from the firm’s emphasis on tapestries and Chinese porcelains toward the more speculative, more lucrative, more exciting business of dealing in Old Masters. We see a demand for these paintings growing in America, fueled by the new “squillionaires” just at the moment when British aristocrats with great art collections were losing their fortunes . . . how Duveen’s whole career was based on the simple observation: Europe has the art; America, the money.
Secrest shows how he sold hundreds of masterpieces by Bellini, Botticelli, Giotto, Raphael, Rembrandt, Gainsborough, Watteau, Velázquez, Vermeer, and Titian, among others, by convincing such self-made Americans as Morgan, Frick, Huntington, Widener, Bache, Mellon, and Kress that ownership of great art would ennoble them, and while waving such huge sums at the already noble British owners that the art changed hands and all were happy.
We discover Duveen’s connection to Buckingham Palace: how when the Prince of Wales became Edward VII his first act was to call in Duveen Brothers as decorators (something had to be done with the lugubrious Victorian décor and ghastly tartan hangings); how Duveen supplied the tapestries and rugs for the coronation ceremonies in Westminster Abbey; and how, in 1933, he became Lord Duveen of Millbank. We learn about the controversies in which he became embroiled and about his legendary art espionage (a network of hotel employees spied on his clients to discover their tastes).
Duveen was as generous as he was acquisitive, giving away hundreds of thousands of pounds to British institutions (the Tate Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, the British Museum–including rooms to house the Elgin Marbles), organizing exhibitions for young artists, writing books about British art, and playing a major role in the design of the National Gallery in Washington.
Meryle Secrest’s Duveen fascinates as it contributes to our understanding of art as commerce and our grasp of American and English taste in the grand manner.
As Andrew Mellon once said, paintings never looked as good as they did when Duveen was standing in front of them.
Customer Reviews:
A fascinating character.......2007-04-11
This is the story of Joseph Duveen, the man responsible for building the most famous private collections (later museums) in the U.S. As a dealer, he was the first to fully understand that art travels where money lives, which is to say from Europe to America.
There are many lively anecdotes recalling his relationship with Morgan, Mellon, Altman, Widener and, most of all, the diabolical Berenson (thanks to new material that has surfaced recently, the confidential contract between the expert and the dealer is very well described in the book). It is true that this book is not entirely satisfactory because it is somewhat confuse and too anecdotical, but the main character is so fascinating that it still makes for good reading.
although somehow difficult to follow, very interesting book.......2006-08-09
For someone interested in art, and more particulary in paintings, this is a very interesting book. Perhaps too many dates, too many names all mixed up in the course of some 40 or 50 years. However, i think it is the best the author could have done. Full of anecdotes, reading this book is also a very entertaining way of learning about the world of art dealers, auction firms and the greatest collectors of all time.
Very recommendable
A Great Effort Sadly Lacking.......2005-03-01
I held great hopes for this book--Duveen has long been of interest to me because of the pivotal role he played in the creation of some of the greatest art collections in this country. However, Secrest in her drive to capture the "essence" of the man has so mangled the story of his life and career that reading her work is more chore than delight. To say the book is disorganized is to deal in serious understatement. But worse than that are the inaccuracies, especially when she writes about Duveen's customers. Just for starters, apparently she didn't recognize the need to differentiate between John D. Rockefeller, Jr. and his father (or maybe she didn't know there has been more than one JDR!). You won't learn much from this tome that you don't know to begin, and getting through it will be a struggle.
Europe had the Art, America had the Money.......2004-09-30
The sub-title of this book, 'A Life in Art' is absolutely true, but almost misleading. Quite a number of books with something like that in their name deal with the life of an artist. This one, instead, deals with the life of Joseph Duveen, art dealer.
Joseph Duveen lived at a time when the established order was changing. He made an early observation that while Europe had the art, America had the money. As head of Duveen Brothers (London, Paris, New York) he set up an organization finding hundreds of the Old Masters in Europe and selling them to American collecters. The list of his customers reads like a Who's Who of the American rich: Mellon, Frick, J. P. Morgan, Huntington, Kress, Hearst and many, many more.
The book is largely based on the Duveen Archive. Held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the archive was locked away and hidden. Only recently has the archive been transferred to the Getty Research Institute for the History of Art and the Humanities in Los Angeles. There a decision was made to make the archive available on microfilm for study. The archive consists of the documentation that accompanied the business: letters, cables, photo albums, ledgers, sales books, stock books, etc. These kinds of documents are the life blood of a business and in this case enable the author to have unparalleled insight to how the business operated. This is combined with a knac for story telling that makes the dead business documents come alive.

Oscar Wilde was a man ahead of his time. He was famous for pushing the parameters of socially accepted sexual codes (albeit with disastrous results), and, as a playwright, for introducing a new, extraordinarily modern, idea of comedy that combined psychological insight with social satire. But he was also one of the primary inventors of the art and science of self-invention and self-promotion. The Wilde Album by Merlin Holland (Wilde's grandson) is a fascinating and comprehensive examination of how Wilde the artist consciously conjured--through a complicated and savvy use of the media--Wilde the personality. Holland has assembled an enormous number of artifacts--from press clippings to political cartoons to theater programs --that map Wilde's emergence as a media celebrity and chart how this image was used against him as his popularity foundered in the face of scandal.
What makes The Wilde Album ultimately moving, and unique, is Holland's use of rare family photos and personal material. Juxtaposed with the vivaciousness of the public life, and in the context of the government's persecution of the artist, this more private material embodies and expresses the pain and needless tragedy of Wilde's life.
Book Description
The most comprehensive collection of photographs and images of Wilde--compiled by his only grandson.
Oscar Wilde was one of the first and unquestionably one of the greatest self-publicists who ever lived. With that exceptional streak of modernity that characterized much of his life and work, he understood the power of the image in his campaign to promote the self. As early as his Oxford days, he had himself photographed with his contemporaries in loud checked suits of the latest fashion. The Wilde Album now publishes more of these images of Oscar than have ever been seen together before, as well as later photographs, some previously unpublished, from the family archive, including rare snapshots of Oscar in his last years in Italy; the famous sitting in New York for Napoleon Sarony in fur coat and velvet suit; and the good, the bad, and the vicious caricatures, cartoons, and lithographs.
In the accompanying text, Merlin Holland examines Wilde's life as reflected in the photographs and images, paying particular attention to his relationships with friends, family, and lovers, as well as the profound influence of his Irish upbringing. He also investigates the reasons for the adverse opinions his work engered and the background to the famous legal battles that finally led to imprisonment and exile.
Customer Reviews:
"...walks between passion and poetry...".......2003-04-14
This volume is more touching and insightful than most
works about Oscar Wilde tend to be. It is filled with
the narrative commentary of Wilde's grandson,
Merlin Holland, who gives honest opinions as well
as factual detail about the various stages of
Oscar Wilde's life.
The treasures, however, are the multitudes of
photographs, memorabilia, and paintings that are
included -- as well as drawings, satirical cartoons
(mostly lampooning Oscar, both at Oxford and later
in life), and wonderful notations under the items.
The most interesting photographs, for me, are
the ones which were done by Napoleon Sarony. They
seem to touch a more thoughtful, poetic, dreamy
Oscar, rather than the posing bon vivant or the
deliberately provocative aesthete/decadent.
The volume does well to have one of those photos
on the cover, as well as having a different photo
beside the title page. The grotesque photos,
that almost make one cringe, though, are of
Oscar in a skirted Greek national costume
(with boots!) from April 1877; Oscar in a
checkered suit and bowler hat at Oxford in
1878, and Oscar at age 2 in a blue velvet
dress, a daguerreotype which has been color
tinted. The weirdest photos are of the
"blond tiger/panther" Lord Alfred Douglas,
would-be "friend" and lover of Oscar. His
eyes look vacant, haunted, cold in most of
the photos , except for the one on page 147,
in which he looks touchingly sensitive and
lonely...the caption below the picture says
it all: "Douglas aged 23. 'Your slim gilt
soul walks between passion and poetry. I know
Hyacinthus, whom Apollo loved so madly, was you
in Greek days,' Wilde wrote to him around that
time."
Truly a remarkable album of memories.
A Little Gem for Folks Wild for Wilde.......2002-07-16
This is a sparkling gem for all fans of Oscar Wilde. It is a brilliant retelling of Oscar's life through pictures. Filled with everything from photographs of Wilde the aesthete to hilarious caricatures of him from Punch magazine to some of Wilde's own drawings and notes, this fabulous little book has it all. Many of the items I have not seen in any other volume. It goes wonderfully well coupled with Richard Ellman's gorgeous biography or it stands tall on its own. All and all, a marvelous book that I cannot possibly recommend highly enough.
Marvelous little book.......2001-09-29
Cutting to the chase, the real prize in this marvelous little book are the photographs. For once, we get something other than the usual lot that appear in books with a Wilde connection. Mr. Holland has achieved through his pictures (most seem to be from the family collection) something which most texts don't do..... a feel for the whole of Wilde the man. There is a human dimension to this slim volume that one does not find elsewhere. There are pictures of ancestors, parents, editorial cartoons, advertisements, all in relatively strict chronological order, from the child in a dress (as was customary for little boys in the period) to the student, the developing fop, the lampooned character, the ludicrous pairing with Bosie... who looks perpetually bored and thoroughly uninteresting... to the depressing denouement, death bed and funerary monuments.
The text reveals nothing new but it is elegantly written. Both of Wilde's children were devoted to the memory of their father. It is evident that the grandson was raised in like manner.
Of Wilde's two boys, Cyril died in WWI without issue. Mr. Holland is the grandson of the other, Vyvyan.
If you are interested in the period, England and Ireland in late 19th century, Wilde, gay history, etc. buy this book. It is worth infinitely more than it costs.
Indispensible.......2000-07-26
Aside from the books Wilde actually wrote, this is the one book that should be on the shelf of everyone who loves Oscar. While its biographical story adds nothing new to the facts, the author's palpable sympathy for his grandfather is a welcome change from the cold and critical standard set by most critics of this pivotal genius and the wreckage of his life. More importantly, this small volume, which you can carry in a pocket, constitutes the largest single repository of Wilde memorabilia. Holland begins by lamenting the dissolution and loss of Wilde's scrapbooks and albums in the debtor sale of the author's entire household. By the end of his story his family's loss has taken on its true proportions as a loss to the rightful inheritance of all humankind.
an elegant, intimate scrapbook.......2000-04-23
This elegant little book is the first book about Oscar Wilde that I read and the one that made me fall in love with him. It's filled with beautiful pictures, some of which I haven't seen in other books. Besides the usual public pictures of Oscar, there are photos of personal objects like his wife Constance's wedding ring, letters and pages of manuscript, some in French, that show glimpses of the privet man behind the epigrams. There is enough biographical information to put the pictures in context; I knew very little about Oscar when I first read it and found everything to be quite clear. If you already have Vyvyan Holland's biography of Oscar (which would fit very nicely with this book, filling out the biographical information, as would Richard Ellmann's biography), there are more than enough pictures in this book that are not in Vyvyan Holland's book to make it worth adding to your library.
