              5 out of 5 stars Island adventurer.......2007-01-06

This book was fabulous. My wife and I were married in the Cooks and I found this book to be quite helpful and full of humor. As for map scale, the island is very small and you could almost throw a rock to the other side of the island. As Papa explains in the book the islanders are very nice and accommodating while working on what they claim is "coconut time".

My suggestion if on a trip to the Cooks, read Papa Mike's book and you will see for your self how easy the island was to navigate after reading this enjoyable masterpiece.

2 out of 5 stars Not a stand alone guidebook........2005-05-31

This book, which is more of a trip report than a real guidebook is not adequate to be your only guide to the Cooks.

The most crucial failing is that the location of lodging and restuarants is not indicated on his maps. It really is helpful to know where places are located.

Looking at page 35, his map of Rarotonga, shows some districts, Muri, Titikaveka but there isn't even a scale indicator, how far is one neighborhood from the other?

He often subsitutes personal anecdotes for useful information. For instance he tells you that 3 collect calls he made to his office in California were expensive but does not really explain how the phones work in the Cooks (Kia Orana cards, etc.)

Or he writes "What Not to Take - Leave behind your hash pipe, methanthedamine, fruits, meats, cats, dogs and your nine-millimeter Uzi, for none of these are permitted." Was he padding? did he have to add some more pages? because that is just a useless waste of words.

Othertimes he relies on opinions of his fellow tourists (he admits as much himself) as in restaurant reviews.

I just feel that this was a lazy book. He went to the Cook's to write this guide and just didn't make much (or any effort) to do anything extra that would assist the traveler. He rode around on a scooter and saw some accomodations (he only lists those that have more than 4 units), if you use the Cook Island tourist Web site you can get more info and pictures.

He also describes the cross-island walk but on the Lonely Planet forum he admitted that he had not done the walk himself but only interviewed a guide. Yet he writes stuff like "The rest of us, after viewing the needle ..."

If this book is available for free somewhere, sure take a look.
He does describe taking a freighter out to Penrhyn, an interesting 4 page description that is not in Moon or LP.

I did glean one valuable thing from the book, under Courtesies and Appropriate dress he writes than one should always exchange pleasantries with a shopkeeper (Good morning, how are you?) before asking for whatever you want to purchase.

But this is not a real guidebook.

              5 out of 5 stars Very Good!.......2004-10-17

I have never been to the Cook Islands, but as I read Papa Mike's book, I felt as if I was in the middle of a trip there. He makes the reader feel life on the island as it is lived. It is very clear that he loves the people and their way of life. His stories and tips are warm with touches of humor, and yet very detailed so that the reader can easily visualize a trip to the Islands. I was impressed with the details of the accomodations or lack thereof on each island, and the details of activities and travel on each island. Mr. Hollywood has obviously spent some time living on the Islands, and after reading his book, I hope to do so, too.

5 out of 5 stars VERY useful handbook!.......2004-10-11

Papa Mike's Cook Islands Hanbook is an exceptionally useful guide for the first time visitor to the Cook Islands. My wife and I traveled to the Cooks in July 2004, and loved it. Papa Mike's book helped us prepare every step of the way, from booking our accomodation in advance, bringing proper clothing, procedures at the airport, to very accurate reviews of local restaurants. The book details the many options for activities around the island, including the "not to be missed" Island Nights. Also included is a detail of all of the Rarotonga bus schedules, so you can quickly and inexpensively get around the island.

This book is worth every penny, and will save you tons on your trip. I give it my highest rating.

3 out of 5 stars Moon Guides: Tahiti Handbook by David Stanley is much better.......2004-09-26

Sorry to disagree with one of the other reviewers, bu the COOK ISLANDS are NOT a "little known" island chain. I am sorry to say that the small island of Aitutaki has been over-built with INCREDIBLY expensive (for the poor service & mediocre food) resorts that charge 5 star prices (and more) and deliver 2 star service & food, pollute the fragile lagoon with OTWB (over-the-water-bungalows) that can cost $US 600+ per day. An nearby, off-shore tiny atoll (where one can go for a day snorkel picnic) is now over-run with tourists, an over-priced shack where one can stay for the night & a refreshment/food stand.

If you purchase David Stanley's TAHITI HANDBOOK you get maps, culture, history, religion, politics, flight & ferry schedules, reviews on food, dive shops, car rentals, excursions and lodging in all categories, on ALL of French Polynesia, the Cook Islands & Easter Island, all in the same book for a reasonable price. If this other reviewer had read the COOK ISLAND section in David's book he'd know that the Cooks are not a remote, untraveled island chain, but an island chain frequented by Kiwis & Ozzies who get MUCH better deals (on hotel room rates) by booking through their own local travel agents as opposed to US travel agents, and he'd also learn that sometimes, self-booking and negotiating with the smaller hotel's owners can produce a better rate, and a better experience, than relying on a US packager that wants to shove you into a pre-packaged plan that pays him/her the biggest commission. David's 25 years of traveling the South Pacific incognito makes his advice INVALUABLE. He also includes the feedback of readers, I know, I am one of them. Tahiti Handbook is more extensive and reliable than Papa Mike's or the unreliable (on price & room rates & maps) LONELY PLANET'S COOK ISLANDS.

This is a well designed book, the packaing, feel and printing are excellent quality. Not all of the drawings are reproduced in color but, for the price I can't complain. This is not a text heavy book, if you admire Tuttles work and understand it you will appreciate what this book does. How it shows the rough and ripped edges and the shadows so important to the work.

Now Back in Print An elegant and insightful book. -- The Art Newspaper Exquisite. --Boston Globe Joe Earle . . . has enlightened us with new facts associated with the subjects portrayed in netsuke and new insight into the background of this unique world . . . An excellent, well-written tome and a worthy addition to one's library. --International Netsuke Society Journal Netsuke--tiny sculptures used to secure pouches to the kimono--have long been an obsession for collectors in both East and West. They depict a variety of figures, both domestic and exotic, from marketplace tradesmen to otherworldly beings to perfectly rendered animals. This superbly illustrated, accessibly written volume examines netsuke in the context of Japanese life and details the origins of designs that have evolved through the centuries. It delves into the minds of the artists and explores the question of the objects' use, both functional and symbolic. Featuring 300 netsuke from three world-renowned collections, this is the definitive work on these remarkably minute, endlessly intricate objects.

In the body of the text (new principles for collecting) Mr. Bushell fully displays the erudition one would expect from such a formidable collector but manages to do so in a way that is easy to grasp and immensely entertaining. Bravo, Mr. Bushell !

                      Book Description

Netsuke are exquisite reminders of three centuries of Japanese life. In tiny sculptural masterworks, most under two inches high and originally destined to keep the cord attached to a gentleman's snuffbox from slipping through the belt of his kimono, the myths, legends, and cultural history of Japan is recorded. Tiny Buddhas, grinning female poets of the sixteenth century, monkeys, jesters, and craftsmen beam their imperishable cheerfulness toward the viewer, taking the mystery of the ages in their tiny strides. Netsuke: Japanese Life and Legend in Miniatures features over seventy of these superb artifacts, along with fascinating background on the figure and the object or idea it represents.

5 out of 5 stars The power of netsuke.......2007-03-26

This book is a lot like the netsuke themselves. At first, it looks like it might be something interesting, so you pick it up, look a little closer, and...you are inside a whole different world. Something deceptively simple shows itself to have hidden depths.

I had been interested in netsuke for awhile, ever since buying a little ivory sumo in an antique shop in Japan one day. There was something about the miniature wrestler that fascinated me, and I found myself going back to the shop over and over again, just to look at it. I finally knew that, even though it was expensive, it had to be mine.

This is much like the feeling that author Edwin Symmes describes, leading me to believe that it must be a universal experience amongst netsuke appreciators. He is someone who loves the stories behind the tiny figures, who tries to find their personality rather than figure out their rarity or value. In "Netsuke: Japanese Life and Legend in Miniature", he combines his fascination with his skills in photography, creating small vignettes incorporating the figures with appropriate settings, such as an ivory tiger emerging from real bamboo, or a wooden Daruma nestled inside a rock cave. Next to each image is a story, detailing the legends behind the figure, or maybe a little something about the carver, something that you wouldn't know just by looking but which deepens the understanding and appreciate of the figure.

What this book is not is a collector's guide to netsuke. Anyone new to the art form, and looking for a "How to.." guide to give them tips as what to look for, isn't going to find that here. Not that it is entirely lacking in practical information. There are sections describing the history of netsuke, their original use and their evolution, but that is not the focus. To those who's interest lies in photography, Symmes includes a fascinating section on photographing netsuke. But the real joy lies in looking at the pictures, reading the stories, and sharing the love of netsuke that radiates from this book.

There are a lot of high quality photographies of very wonderful netsuke, interesting design, good advice how to do the photographies of small netsuke better! This book is very good for beginning carvers, galleries!

5 out of 5 stars A story goes with each netsuke.......2004-09-17

As author Symmes says, netsukes have the "power to influence people and pocketbooks." This statement is true in several aspects. First, the collector of netsukes will find that they are expensive. Second, the purpose of a netsuke is to fasten an "inro," or case holding valuables, to an obi or belt. "Ne" translates as "root" and "tsuke" translates as "to fasten." An inro's cords are held tightly by an "ojime," or bead, to keep it closed and the netsuke keeps the inro from falling off of the wearer.

The highly-detailed photographs of netsukes are in harmony with the scenery and objects surrounding them, so lusciously artistic that you may consider framing them.

HIH Prince Norihito of Takamado, who wrote this book's foreward, says he looks for "warmth, wit, and a certain twist" in his own netsuke collection. To fully appreciate a netsuke, "hold it, feel it, and examine it closely in one's hand."

Netsuke figures have stories associated with them. Many figures are puns in which the same word may have several meanings. For example, monkey is "saru" which is pronounced the same as "to leave," so it would be unlucky to marry in a monkey year.

If you are not familiar with Asian astrology, this book will teach you much about the associated legends. One tale that fascinated me was about Daruma, the 28th patriarch of Zen Buddhism. Daruma meditated for 9 years, sitting so long that his legs lost their strength. My sister, who lived in Japan for many years, sent me a wooden Daruma doll with two blank eyes. When you knock over the Daruma doll, it pops back upright, reflecting an undaunted spirit. Here's what you are supposed to do with a Daruma doll: you color one eye to make a prayer, then you color the other one when the prayer is answered.

You'll learn much about Japanese life and legend from studying these tiny netsukes -- and Symmes provides us with a fun way to learn.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely images, informative text - great introduction!.......2000-01-23

Between the introductory text and the stories attached to each picture, this book serves to both educate and whet the appetite. I struggled with the desire to own each of the pieces that Symmes so lovingly photographed.

5 out of 5 stars Visual Masterpiece for the Netsuke Enthusiast.......1999-05-04

Symmes does a wonderful job of composing this text. He gives a nice history of netsuke, covering the span of time from feudal Japan to the present. He includes a small section on netsuke manufacture, and another on photographic techniques for macro photography and design, and then the text opens into a wonderful collection of full-page photographs of several varied and incredible pieces, some dating back to the seventeenth century. He includes brief descriptions of the netsuke, although he could have elaborated on the Japanese (and Chinese) fables that inspired many of these creations for Western audiences. Many of the pieces in this book are available today in reproduction form, and the netsuke are composed of several different materials, not just the "typical" ivory or wood. This text is a must have for any collector, beginning or advanced, as it will inspire readers to research their private collections as well as create the desire to build them! The reproduction of detail from the photographs is amazing!

                            Book Description

Masatoshi is the last netsuke carver to belong to the great tradition of Japanese craftsmanship, belonging, that is, in all particulars but one - this book; for never before has a master carver described himself, his training and his approach to his work.

How does a carver choose his subjects? What influences his choice of materials? What tools does he use to carve with? How long does he spend polishing his work? Masatoshi shares his insights of a master carver, and more; he welcomes us into his realm of ghosts and goblins, owls and lizards, Kabuki heroes and Edo Period entertainers - all of them brought to life in the carver's descriptions of his own netsuke and in the carvings themselves, each one illustrated in color.

The artist Masatoshi is a superb carver and the photgraphs of his works and others in this collection epitomize the "best of the best" in the field of this unique Japanese art form. If you like oriental art, this book is a must for the true collector. The book itself is highly collectible, although the First Edition is impossible to find.

Norman Sandfield has saved everyone a lot of time and effort with this excellent annotated guide to the world of these miniature Japanese carvings. References abound on netsuke types, specific pieces, inro, ojime, sagemono, and toggles in addition to those on legends, subject matter, techniques, materials, and various artist's schools.

Not content to confine himself to the English literature, outstanding foreign references have been included. Any serious collector of netsuke, okimono, or sagemono must consider this book.

                                  Book Description

Taking a closer look at James Rouse, a key figure in urban planning who had a profound influence on American developments, this biography explores the full scope of his life, work, and vision. Better Places, Better Lives details Rouse's transformation from a 22-year-old upstart with an innovative plan to facilitate Baltimore's residential mortgages into a master planner and city builder celebrated on the cover of Time magazine. This biography explores how the migration from city to suburb created a demand for community gathering places and how Rouse met that need by building the first enclosed mall. His vision of planned communities, his conception and creation of the festival marketplace, and his later campaign for affordable housing are examined. Rouse is shown as a leading force in new concepts and building types that affected a wide range of people, from city dwellers and suburbanites to young professionals and tourists. This is a story about the processes, the experiments, and the reactions to setbacks that accompany the act of creating something novel.

5 out of 5 stars The Ancient Gael.......2001-06-21

This is a profound book full of fascinating historical data on one of the most complex characters of ancient Irish history. Much of what the author writes is of necessity speculation but he also has researched into the history of the O'Neills & the old gaelic Chieftain order. The result is a facinating drama from the pages of ancient Irish history presented in a most dramatic & colourful manner. Personally I believe here is a story that could transfer the world of cinema & rival & surpass Braveheart in its epic scale & mesmerising characters. There is firstly the young O'Neill born into the most eminent of all Irish families, suddenly orphaned & at risk from his own people. Forced to flee he is taken in by the English & raised to be their pawn. In time he grows to manhood, returns to his people & claims all that is his. At first he has the support of the English as they pit Irish against Irish but eventually he outgrows them & becomes instead the most dangerous foe the Elizabethan armies have ever encountered. He scores victory after vistory over the English, culminating with his destruction of their great army at The Battle of the Yellow Ford. Unfortunately for O'Neill English resources far outweigh his as he well knows & a single defeat will spell his ruin. This comes inevitably at the battle of Kinsale & then all are left to mourn not just the passing of the Ancient Gael & its great Lords but the entrenchment of the English in Ireland which resulted in such pleasures as the Penal Times, 1798, The Great Famine, the War of Independence & today's Troubles in Northern Ireland. All can be traced back to that single defeat at Kinsale. I rate this book as by far the most significant work that O'Faolain ever wrote & believe it should be compulsory for all Irish History students. One curious aside is the comparison between this period of Irish history & the Indian wars in the USA. Certain characters have an uncanny resemblance, Sitting Bull & Hugh O'Neill; Crazy Horse & Hugh O'Donnell; Mountjoy & Sherman(?). Also the desperate struggle to maintain an ancient way of life & the realisation on the part of the indigenous peoples that theirs was a hopeless battle & that eventually a single defeat would bring their end. Yet these people believed strongly enough in their culture to fight for it & as an Irishman I am proud that O'Neill & O'Donnell fought their great foes rather than going quietly into the night. A great book.

                                          4 out of 5 stars Hugh O'Neill - The Last Irish King.......2000-08-14

I read this book because I am an O'Neill and wanted to learn more about my heritage. What I came away with is a better understanding of the history of the conflict between Ireland and England, that Ireland was in fact England's first colony and that a man named Hugh O'Neill nearly ended England's world colonization before it began. Enlightening also is the view into 16th century European culture and politics. This book is a pleasure to read for it's colorful descriptions of characters and settings as well as it's glimspe into historical events that are not often described.
