I bought this guide to help me with my trip to Maldives But it's not good. The informations are not well organized and it's not easy to find what you are looking for. So, for me, it didn't work. The best guides are Eyewitness!!

Decent intro book.......2007-01-03

This book was OK. It was a little confusing and I thought not too well organized. I had to go to the web to find more information. Prices of resorts aren't listed but if you go to the resort's web page you can find that information. Definitely worth it for an introduction to Maldives.

The fact that this 500-page catalogue raisonné was approved by Balthus himself, the most mutable of authorities on his own life and oeuvre, will make it suspect for some historians. And the fact that the texts for the 2,100 black-and-white reproductions are in French (a long, earnest essay by Jean Clair is translated into English) will limit its usefulness for nonacademic readers. But the book is beautiful, and something even better: a cautionary tale about an artist of enormous talent tarnished by unresolved neurosis. As the poet James Fenton wrote of Joseph Cornell, even the most devoted admirer must sometimes turn away, when "the pathology glints from the depths."

Balthus has often lamented that his paintings are mistakenly discussed in terms of their subject matter, but it is the imagery that rudely seizes the viewer's attention away from the paintings' serene, early Renaissance formality and lush 19th-century brushwork, so easy on the eye, and directs it toward the spread legs of all those pubescent girls, to the knife on the floor near the nude on the bed, or to the music teacher's teeth tearing the skirt of her trapped, flailing student.

The hundreds upon hundreds of drawings here, as well as the 80 beautiful color plates of paintings, show the young Balthus as a master of haunting imagery--cats and streets and hills in shadow--that often melds Piero della Francesca's classical forms with an edgy, slightly surreal anxiety. They convey the tender poet of the European countryside, heir to both Caspar David Friedrich and Cézanne. But the nymphet pictures ultimately overshadow Balthus's body of work--not that they are anything but tame in light of today's erotic tastes--but because they come to seem the raison d'être of a second-rate romantic painter, rather than the personal quirks of a great one. --Peggy Moorman

In his own words, Balthus states, "when you draw you are at the heart of the world..." From this book of drawings you begin to see how Balthus reached this conclusion, almost as though he himself was at the core of the universe. Beautiful studies in charcoal, pencil, ink, crayon and watercolor from which many of his paintings emerged - a wonderful compendium of sketches that are seductive and intoxicating.

Look at the skeletons of Balthus' familiar works. The over-worked paintings of late might lead one to assume a lack of spark.

Here you find some fresh and direct drawings on paper. You might question the subjects he chooses as I do, but the love of gesture and mark-making evident are persuasive.

Dover's mission furniture catalogs.......2000-04-15

While Charles Limbert is less well known than the Stickley brothers, some of his furniture was, to the European eye, even better. Sadly, the line drawings of the original catalog are extremely ugly (see nos 79 and 80 which are reproduced as photographs on the cover, you would scarcely recognise them!). I did use this to build a glazed bookcase (no 306), which must be some sort of a recommendation, for I haven't used any of the other catalogs yet. And the book is very cheap!

This book proposes that Mark's Gospel was written in Rome in late 71 after the return of the feared Titus who had recently destroyed the Jerusalem Temple. Recognising that the use of emotional appeals was a prime contemporary rhetorical tool, it shows the Gospel to be an emotionally-charged text aimed at readers traumatised by years of persecution, fear of arrest and intra-community tensions over the forgiveness of those who had failed. Doig traces the evolution of the Port Authority from the battles leading to its creation in 1921 through its conflicts with the railroads and its expansion to build bridges and tunnels for motor vehicles. Chronicling the adroit maneuvers that led the Port Authority to take control of the region's airports and seaport operations, build the largest bus terminal in the nation, and construct the World Trade Center, Doig reveals the rise to power of one of the world's largest specialized regional governments.

Should focus more on history/politics and less on political theory.......2007-04-07

This book provides a pretty good history of the much-maligned Port Authority. One of the book's main strengths is Mr. Doig's ability to weave together biographies of key PA players with the pressing issues that have confronted the PA during its 80+ years. The PA was the first of the so-called authorities: deliberately established to avoid the usual political "game." As such, it has offended many important political leaders, clipping their wings on a range of issues. I think that Mr. Doig addresses this nicely, exposing the provincialism that is common in New York and New Jersey. On a critical note, I would have liked more attention paid to the political history and actors that have shaped the PA. In my view, Mr. Doig spends a little too much time on abstract political theory.

Tracing the evolution of Atlantic City from a miserable hamlet of fishermen's huts in 1854 to the nation's premier seaside resort in 1910, The Social Anxieties of Progressive Reform chronicles a bizarre political conflict that reaches to the very heart of Progressivism.

Operating outside of the traditional constraints of family, church, and community, commercial recreation touched the rawest nerves of the reform impulse. The sight of young men and women frolicking in the surf and tangoing on the beach and the presence of unescorted women in boardwalk cafs and cabarets translated for many Progressives, secular and evangelical alike, into a wholesale rejection of socio-sexual restraints and portended disaster for the American family. While some viewed Atlantic City as a modern-day Sodom and Gomorrah, others considered the resort the triumph of American democracy and a healthy and innocent release from the drudgery and regimentation of industrial society.

These conflicting currents resulted in a policy of strategic censorship that evolved in stages during the formative years of the city. Sunday drinking, gambling, and prostitution were permitted, albeit under increasingly stringent controls, but resort amusements were significantly restricted and shut down entirely on Sunday.

This policy also segregated blacks from the beach and the boardwalk. By 1890, more than one in five residents of Atlantic City was black, a uniquely high ratio among northern cities. While the urban economies of the north depended on immigrant labor, the resort economy of Atlantic City rested on legions of black cooks, waiters, bellmen, and domestic workers. Paulsson's description of African-American life in Atlantic City provides a vivid and comprehensive picture of life in the North during the decades following the Civil War.

Paulsson's work, and his focus on changing social values and growing racial tensions, brings to light an ongoing crisis in American society, namely the chasm between religion and mass culture as embodied by the indifference to the sanctity of the Sabbath. In Atlantic City, churches mounted a nationwide effort to preserve the Christian Sunday, a movement that grew steadily after the Civil War. Paullson's account of modern Sabbatarianism provides fresh insights into the nature of evangelical reform and its relationship to the Progressive movement.

Profound, thought provoking and full of information that is useful to the student, professional or leisure reader. Anyone who has ever lived in, visited or who wants to learn about Atlantic City MUST read this book. I do not know too much about this Paulsson fellow, but he is a genius and I look forward to reading more of his work.

An Absolute Triumph!.......2002-01-08

Paulsson shows why he is one of the best historians in the business with this revealing and insightful account regarding the origins of Atlantic City - as well as its victories, failures and legacy. Especially interesting is Paulsson's expertise on race relations in Atlantic City. A fine piece of work and well worth the time to read.
