Book Description

Reflecting the conclusions of current taxonomic research and recognizing new species found in the state, these thoroughly updated guides offer the most complete and authoritative reference to the plants of Colorado. Both volumes explain basic terminology; discuss plant geography; and describe special botanical features of the mountain ranges, basins, and plains. Interesting anecdotes and introductions are given for each plant family, and hints on recognizing the largest families are provided as well. Each volume includes a complete glossary, indices to common and specific names, and hundreds of illustrations. Ideal both for the student and scientist, Colorado Flora: Eastern and Western Slopes, Third Edition are essential for readers interested in Colorado's plant life.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......2007-08-27

Brilliant guide. This is the one I turn to when all others have failed. No photos. Does have a lot of line drawings of species. But if this book is to be of any value to you, you have to learn to read the botanical keys. Best field guide for Colorado flora Eastern Slope though (flora meaning vegetation - you'll find a lot more than wildflowers in this book). Take note that there is a Western Slope version too.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful field flora.......2006-07-27

While in the Rockies I found this flora to be indespensible to sating my curiosity of the plants I came across. Its key is designed so that it can be used in the field, giving traits distinguishable by naked eye and hand lens rather than dissecting scope. It's also thorough of its coverage (especially compared to similar-sized flora of other areas, simply because the Colorado vegetation is a little more limited), and it was definately satisfying to be able to carry around so useful a book. (If you're looking for a picture ID guide, however, this isn't it. Like many flora, its drawings in the back are intended to confirm identification rather than as a flip-finder.)

5 out of 5 stars Much Needed.......2006-05-11

This book is currently the bible for taxonomic nomenclature in CO. There is a significant amount of discussion when it comes to assigning names to various plants, but Dr. Weber presents a balanced approach that combines mainstream scientific thought with his own extensive field experience.
If one criticism could be made it would be that this flora only covers the Western Slope area. Hopefully Dr. Weber's publishers will see the value in supporting a more comprehensive volume that covers the Eastern slope as well.

        1 out of 5 stars Have a big Budget?.......2005-06-09

This did nothing for me, and I love to travel. Mostly information on expensive package tours. I am enjoying the Classic Treks book much more.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing adventures, and then more..........2000-08-08

Where do I start ? This book is an amazingly detailed compilation of useful details, addresses, numbers and the like for a wide variety of adventures and yet somehow remains fun to read as well. This is probably in no small part due to the extraordinary color photographs that are found on just about every other page. Not only are many visually stunning, but most make you want to go there, right NOW !

The book is broken down in chapters, each covering a specific type of activity, e.g. safaris, trekking, ballooning, fishing, scuba, soaring, skydiving etc, providing general advice as to where to go and what to do and how, often with the basic technical knowledge to help one understand better what the adventures involve; and then it also manages to get down to the details necessary to help one finalize one's plans, with plenty of phone numbers, addresses, costs -and numerous web sites- etc, and all the advice and little nuggets that make the difference between a successful trip and the forgettable ones. The organization by type of activity is very attractive as it allows the reader to immediately focus on the adventure of choice without having to wade through countless listings of locations and activities of little personal interest, as in some other volumes. (Not that there is any adventure in this book that I would not be thrilled to engage in, but there is only so much vacation time -unfortunately- and one has to be selective.) Basically, you pick what you would like to do, and then the book gives you choices as to where to go and how to go about it. There are plenty of suggestions that will fire up your imagination too. This is a very comprehensive volume, with thousands of places and activities listed, and enough adventures to last one a lifetime, ranging from the (semi) sedate family adventure (like dude ranches) to the hair-raising experience one should not tell one's Mom about (like... well, I'll leave that one up to your imagination).

A useful feature is the objective reviews of outfitters and guide services that one may be hard-pressed to find in other places. A very comprehensive listing of outfitters and a good index help also to navigate through the mind-boggling amount of information the author has somehow managed to collect. (Where do I sign up to go and get some of the info first hand for the next edition ?) You want classic adventures ? They are here, from rafting the Grand Canyon to trekking the Annapurna. You want whimsy or downright exotic ? It's there too, and try the Miscellanous Madness chapter. And for those who think they have done it all, try the selected "extreme adventures" that pepper the book. (How does Shark Diving sound to you ?) All of the above with recommended guides, outfitters, and prices.

So, get the book, grab yourself a good chair, your favorite snack or drink, and enjoy ! Not only will you have wonderful dreams for many nights to come, but this little gem will help you make them become reality too. (And then -not to get too materialistic, but eh, I'm saving for a looong trip and anything helps- the book purchase will allow you to benefit from discounts from top outfitters that will more than pay for the book itself. How can you go wrong ?) Well, off to getting my equipment ready...

Did I say I liked this book ?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source for adventure outfitters.......2000-07-08

I just received this book and it is great. It covers many types of adventure travel - moutaineering, diving, rafting, safaris, trekking, cycling, skiing and many more. It lists outfitters with phone numbers and web addresses and gives you an idea what it will cost. There are also recommedations for books, magazines, and videos.

This is a great place to start to plan your next adventure.

Here's the skinny on stripes: a zigzag tour of the form through seventy years of fabric design. Nearly 600 pictures of historic fabric swatches from all over the world provide a virtual treasure chest of design ideas, from the prim floral fashions of the 1940s to the outrageous color combinations and painterly couture fabrics released by the top design houses in Paris during the 1960s. Brilliant photographs provide a visual survey of stripes' many forms, from woven-in to imitation weaves, from wavy lines to prim and proper pin stripes. This is the largest full-color photographic album of textile stripes ever produced, and an invaluable reference guide for artists of every medium.

Maria Rodale, of the family that originated the organic gardening movement in the United States, introduces a beautiful-and practical-journal as an essential companion to her popular Maria Rodale's Organic Gardening. With a similar design, the lush, four-color photographs and illustrations accent the seasonal garden designs and journal pages for gardeners to track their progress, indicate problems and solutions, or simply observe the flora and fauna that surround them in their own thriving organic gardens.

3 out of 5 stars Not Worth $19.95.......2002-06-10

I loved the idea of having a workbook to go along with the main book (Maria Rodale's Organic Gardening Companion), but honestly, it was not worth the $19.95 I spent on it. It is only a workbook. If this book was under $10, it would have been a better value.

4 out of 5 stars Maria Rodale's Organic Gardenig Companion.......2000-09-20

The Rodale family started the organic gardening movement in the US and if you are interested in growing your own food and flowers without the use of non-organic pesticides or other chemicals, you probably own some of the books that the members of the Rodale family have written. This book is a companion (as the title says)to Maria Rodale's Organic Gardening and I would suggest that you read that book too (or first!). Like all of the Rodale books, this one is beautifully illustrated. One picture of a thriving, healthy plant should convince anyone --even those sceptical about organic gardening -- that these methods produce superior plants. One drawback of these books is that they are not written for the sceptical, but for those already convinced of the virtues of organic gardening. It may be hard for someone used to using chemicals on his or her plants to become comfortable with the concept, but experienced gardeners (both organic and non-organic) will see that the method of organic gardening takes no more time than any other way and has the benefit of being cheaper, too. If you are just thinking of starting to garden organically, you may want to begin with another Rodale book. But if you are already converted to organic gardening, you will want to own this book to add it to your collection.

Maria Rodale, who comes to organic gardening naturally--her father and grandfather, who founded Rodale Press, were famously passionate organic gardeners--felt for many years that while there was plenty of good information about organic gardening, there was neither an existing primer that taught all the very basics nor a book that showed that organic gardening can be a beautiful, sophisticated way to plant. ("Admit it, you thought that if you were an organic gardener, you needed to have black plastic mulches and aluminum pie plates to scare the birds and rabbits, didn't you?") So she wrote this one, which, from the discussion of planning your garden on graph paper and the tips on digging up grass to the recipes for using the fall harvest, is utterly, seductively beautiful.

The seasonal organization of the book does sometimes seem almost incidental, save for the calendar pages that show what to plant and what tasks to do during each month. But the discussion of seeds--the various types, where to get them, how to start them indoors--plus Nana's kugel recipe will keep new organic gardeners from chafing at the bit during the winter, and the interviews with numerous long-time organic gardeners make great reading throughout the year. Rodale shows great sense in deciding what's important to new gardeners and those just deciding to go organic. Pests, both animal and plant, are the great fear of potential organic gardeners, and many pages in the book are devoted to weeding effectively, beating the bugs, and gently monitoring the animal population (getting a dog or cat is one good, low-effort solution to keeping a number of destructive small mammals out of the root systems). Rodale's excellent photographs--of her children, her garden, the Rodale Institute farm--appear on almost every page of this artfully designed book. It's a joy to read, and will inspire many a fresh organic tomato. --Barrie Trinkle

5 out of 5 stars Bleeding Heart Liberal's Favorite Gardening Book.......2002-02-16

The beautiful photograph on the front cover showing my favorite flower, the Bleeding Heart, virtually guaranteed that I'd be taking this home with me. I was not disappointed! This is my favorite gardening book of a pretty extensive collection. It is large and so filled with gorgeous photographs that it almost qualifies as a "coffee table book" except for the fact that it is also chock full of very smart and useful information about organic gardening plus well written inspirational tid-bits from Maria Rodale's personal gardening life history. It is divided up into seasonal sections and is a very effective spring fever reliever. I love to dream over the photographs and gardening suggestions when everything is dormant under a blanket of snow. Maria writes as though she is talking to a friend, sharing charming anecdotes, her favorite tools, cherished recipes. Her garden is a lovely, inviting place where the whole ecosystem is respected including the so-called "pests." Do you want to know what to feed a hummingbird? Maria tells you. How about ten ways to eat a tomato? Yum. Maria's there for you. As she says, "Life takes creative thinking. Practice in your garden." I find that after a few minutes with this book my own creativity blossoms. The genuine passionate love for gardening and the green world that is between these pages when combined with all the useful practical ideas and philosophical encouragement makes for a real treat.

                  5 out of 5 stars beautiful,imformative,easy read,clear instructions.......1999-08-04

The Maria Rodale's Organic Gardening:Your Seasonal Companion to Creating a Beautiful and Delicioius Garden is breathtakingly beautiful. Organized by seasons, bursting with information, techniques for gardening and with a bonus of old family recipies, it is a book that will be referred to often. Maria's conversonational form of writing makes the book fun and easy to read. $24.50 is a very reasonable price for so much knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing and well written book!.......1999-04-17

As a budding organic gardener this was an excellent book that not only kindled my interest in the subject but was also incredibly educational. They layout of the book by seasons makes for a fun read. Ms. Rodale gives excellent tips (and great recipes!) for each season. The interviews are fun to read, and include some very interesting personalities.

If you are an organic gardener, buy this book! If you are not, buy this book anyway, it may turn you into one.

My only complaint (and it's not aimed at this book in particular) is that most authors of gardening books forget about those of us in the dreaded near-arctic zones. Short growing seasons and long winters can be a pain! :)

This unusual, fascinating, and at times almost surreal autobiography chronicles the life of Allegra Kent, one of the most famous--and notorious--of Balanchine's prima ballerinas. The most blatantly erotic of Balanchine ballets were written for her pliant and chilly dance method. This book has it all: art, dance, infidelity, sexual intrigue, histrionics, eccentric outbursts, nose jobs, philosophy, and Krishnamurti. Entirely entertaining and intriguing for both dance enthusiasts and those who don't know a plié from a jeté.

                        Book Description

Allegra Kent joined the New York City Ballet at the age of fifteen and, only two years later, inspired Balanchine's unforgettable The Unanswered Question. Beautiful, sensuous, and mysterious, she quickly became an essential Balanchine dancer-and the story of her personal life is as dramatic as they story of her rise to fame. Her account of a bizarre childhood, a magnificent if curious dance career, a charged, complicated domestic life with photographer Bert Stern, and a never-ending struggle with emotional, physical, and financial pressures is fascinating-as are her portraits of the other great dance figures who punctuated her life, from Balanchine to Baryshnikov.

                        4 out of 5 stars Prima.......2007-05-27

Allegra has bared herself completely in this book. To know her is to know how special this work is. Yes, these were the trials of a dancer but they were also the trials of an abused woman. Her trials also included living up to expectations. In other words, this novel truly reaches beyond the world of Ballet. Any upcoming Ballerinas should find a wealth of information about just how trying a professional career can be.

4 out of 5 stars A paean to what once was.......2003-09-01

I saw her dance once, and I still dream of that night. Balanchine was at his peak, and Allegra Kent was more than his principal dancer - she was his muse, his passion, his nemesis. And her dancing was incredible. Once a Dancer, Kent's autobiography, chronicles the strange world of famous ballerinas, plagued as most of them are by anorexia, domineering stage mothers, vulnerability to dance gurus, plastic surgery, and a long, long series of self-destructive behavior. Wonderful sketches of other luminaries from her era are included, plus photos, but it's the end of the book that one remembers: the poignancy of someone of Allegra Kent's talents looking back on her life and appreciating in retrospect all that she once was, is heartbreaking.

3 out of 5 stars An amazing dancer, an amazing life, a dull biography........2002-04-19

Allegra Kent describes her life as a dancer, but does not bother to examine it. By chapter two, her self-pitying tone had become rather annoying.
However, this book does not fail to entertain... her life was certainly quite interesting. I especially enjoyed the study of her complex relationship with her parents.
Once a Dancer is worth reading but nothing compared to the biographies of Suzanne Farrell and Gelsey Kirkland (two of Mr. B's other prima ballerinas).

                        5 out of 5 stars a must read.......2002-01-22

I am a lawyer, not a dancer. However, I absolutely loved this book. Alegra has a wonderful writing syle which captivated me from the beginning. From her yearnings for affection and approval to her unbelievable dancing success, she had me hooked on every page. In fact, thanks to allegra, I have started taking dance lessons!!

                        5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written.......2001-10-24

Not only is this a wonderful look into the personal and professional development of an incredible dancer, it is also an honest, beautifully written portrait of an artist's life. Allegra Kent is not only one of the most magnificent dancers of all time, she is also a very talented writer

In the fifth century, he was brought to Ireland as a slave and eventually became that country's patron saint. In Patrick: The Pilgrim Apostle of Ireland, scholar Máire B. de Paor gathers practically all there is to know about Saint Patrick and offers some ideas about how such a lowly character became such a celebrated one. To contradict the traditional view that Patrick was an unsophisticated, rustic character, de Paor provides close readings of the structure and scriptural allusions of Patrick's writings: the Confessio, similar in many respects to Augustine's Confessions, and the Epistola to Coroticus, the earliest surviving letter containing any record of Irish domestic life. Her analyses suggest that Patrick was a man of great literary ability and ambition. The theme in Patrick's writings that most interests de Paor is "his being an illegal alien on foreign soil, and ... God's fatherly care of him during that pilgrimage for Christ." It is a timeless Irish theme, one that animates all of the best Irish literature and surely underlies many of the most rowdy celebrations of St. Patrick's Day. --Michael Joseph Gross

                                    Book Description

". . . whoever is pleased to look at or receive this writing, which Patrick, a sinner, untaught, to be sure, has composed in Ireland . . . this is my Confession before I die."

Who was St Patrick? In the modern era his name still carries the aura of legend -- yet the truths of his life remain unknown to most readers. Now, in this new work of biographical reconstruction, Máire B. de Paor brings us as close as possible to the man behind the myth. Through a combination of painstaking research and a close reading of Patrick's two surviving works -- the Confessio and the Epistola, their texts included in full in this edition -- de Paor reveals a man at once poet and pilgrim, artist and apostle.

The story of St Patrick, known to many as the patron saint of Ireland, is as complex and mythic as the Irish culture he took as his own. Kidnapped at the age of fifteen, Patrick was smuggled to Ireland in a time of Christian upheaval in Europe. On the rocky coasts of his new home, Patrick adopted the life of a shepherd and the words of his Gaelic companions. At night, however, the Irish hills darkened to reveal the pagan gods and monsters so foreign to Patrick's Christian sensibilities. Patrick prayed for release for six years, only to return to evangelize his pagan captors.

Until recently, the modern consensus was that Patrick was a barely literate rustic struggling with a sense of inadequacy in a language he could not master. In her exhaustively researched biography, Máire B. de Paor uncovers the true Patrick as revealed through his two major literary works. Started as a defense against his accusers, Patrick's writings evolved into something more powerful -- a manifestation of the spirit that had gripped him. Set against a backdrop of the Catholic fervor of the fifth century, Patrick's words also reflect a fascinating time in religious history. As a religious figure, and as a captured slave, Patrick was the living embodiment of the conflict between the civilized Roman Catholics and the "dangerous heathen enemies of the Empire."

A scholar of exceptional depth and insight, de Paor examines Patrick's written legacy with refreshing vigor and passion and discovers an artist of astonishing literary skill and a man of great spiritual depth.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating, though academic.......2003-05-16

In this fascinating book, Irish religious scholar Maire B. de Paor examines Saint Patrick, patron saint of Ireland. In a scholarly manner, Ms. De Paor goes through Patrick's Confessio and Epistola Excommunicating Coroticus. Each line is examined in detail, producing a breathtaking amount of information about Patrick and his times.

As the above description suggests, this book was written for the scholarly reader, but it is not inaccessible to even the casual reader. Though the text is often exhaustingly academic, what makes this book well worth reading is that it is such an overflowing well of information on Patrick. And, I must say that I enjoyed the author's religious stance, treating Patrick's faith as alive, rather than a historical artifact.

So, if you really want to understand St. Patrick, then I highly recommend that you get this book.

5 out of 5 stars Challenging but rewarding.......2002-04-15

The author has an obvious affection for Patrick, and I doubt you'll finish this wonderful book without growing to like him too. I recommend you read this book out of order: Start with the introduction (36 pages), and then skip to the back to read the author's translation of Patrick's two written works - his "confession" and letter to a roman officer. The rest of the book analyzes these two documents in light of the other facts known about this fifth century great.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Work On This Fascinating Man.......2002-03-11

Máire Bríd de Paor, an Irish religious scholar and a Presentation Sister, has simply produced the most compelling work to date on St. Patrick. This is a book which anyone truly interested in the topic must own, and an absolute necessity for any library worth its salt! Its exhaustive yet essential resources include the complete original text (and the best English translation to date) of Patrick's own words in his two surviving works - the Confessio and the Epistola. Through a thoughtful and compelling exposition of these works, de Paor leaves us feeling closer to Patrick, in his lifelong quest to emulate Christ. More than 1,500 years before Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mohandas Gandhi and Susan B. Anthony, St. Patrick was writing forcefully in favor of the end of slavery and the liberation of women. You'll read this marvelous book, savor it, refer back to it. It involves a bit of work, mind you, but with that investment, you'll be invigorated by the sheer power and energy of this great man, who reaches across the millenia with a message as fresh as when it was penned.
