A "Prequel" of Epic Proportions.......1999-06-04

First there was the engaging saga of "Bacillus Subtilis and Other Gram-Positive Bacteria" that hit the bookshelves and captivated readers worldwide. Now, this TWO VOLUME epic shows us where it all began. It reveals the origins and transformation of an innocent coliform, Ecoli, who just wanted to gain sustenance from its gutter lifestyle and be left alone. I personally found it sorrowful how it became ripped from its sewer home and was probed, analyzed, and mutated into the monster of research literature that it became. It becomes obvious that it was BECAUSE of the dominance of Ecoli, and its more virulent cousin, Styphi, that Bacillus became the rebel hero of bacteria that would wrench the eyes and hearts of scientists away from the Gram-Negative Empire and would bring balance to bacteriology. Particularly intriguing were the chapters related to segregation. While this grand novel is NOT for children, it remains an educational tour-de-force that should be read again - many times over.

Great guide to most of Provence.......2007-08-18

I've spent a lot of time with many Provence guidebooks and I recommend this one as one of the best. If you use Rick Steves or Lonely Planet, this is a good counterpoint. I wouldn't use just this guide for lodging or restaurants because the listings aren't extensive enough and the book isn't updated annually but the book has inspirational descriptions of the varied pleasures of Provence. The book does not cover the Côte d'Azur; another Cadogan guide by the same authors does. If I had to use just one book while traveling in Provence I would certainly consider this one.

ok but disappointing guide to provence.......2007-06-27

We loved Lazy Days in Provence, a guidebook to some great, largley off the beaten track, restaurants in Provence. It had great advice and an informal style. We bought this guidebook because two of its authors were also the authors of Lazy Days. The detailed info is accurate but the style is deadly. We left it at home and took Marc Fincham's Insight Guide to Provence instead. Suggest you do the same.

Having been to Provence about ten times in the last twenty years, I've read plenty of guides, and none have gone as directly to the heart of the matter as this one. There are plenty of posey guides out there, but if you want to know what makes the region tick, warts and all, I recommend Facaros and Pauls. The others seem shallow in comparison. And these guys make me laugh, an added bonus!

Steer clear of this unreliable guide........2001-05-05

Don't be fooled by the witty writing; the writers are either ill-informed or malicious. 2 of 3 hotels they recommended were downright seedy. The Miramar at La Ciotat (three stars, "a classy, updated old hotel amid pine groves, by the beach") turned out to be a nicotine-saturated, dimly lit dive that charged our credit card before we arrived (we didn't stay). Pine groves? The hotel sits shadeless on an ugly stretch of tarmac. The "pine groves" were a few trees in the parking lot behind the hotel. There are many good guides to Provence; choose another.

"Been there" Style Instills Confidence and Excitement.......2000-09-07

In planning a trip for my wife and I to Provence, I bought several guide books for assistance. This one stood out. The authors have clearly walked the paths, stayed in the lodgings and eaten at many of the resturants they write about. Since they were bound to cover the entire area, it seemed I could tell when they had not actually been there, but these parts were few. Their style gives a really good feeling about a place, and the practical matters of sight seeing, hiking, biking, sleeping, eating and especially resting are well done. Not every place gets a good review; I especially liked the comments on what to miss. I found this all too often lacking in competing guides, that read more like they were edited by the local Chamber of Commerce. Another plus - Cagodan Provence was published this year, making it one of the most current available. My recommendation: If you're going, buy it.

Gorgeous Provence.......2004-04-26

This glossy guide is an upscale version of the standard Fodor's guides, chock full of beautiful photographs. It's all you need if you're going on an organized tour, where hotels and meals are taken care of, and you really want some flavor for the people, food, history and culture. Scattered throughout are sections called "Focus On" discussing the mistral (both the wind and the poet!), ecology, cuisine, and of course wine. The maps are unusually good too. But the hotel and restaurant lists are cursory at best, and if you're an independent traveler you'll want to supplement this book with more comprehensive information. For this well-traveled part of the world the internet is a great resource. No one guide has it all!

Excellent guide.......2003-06-27

We just spent 10 days in Provence with three other couples. Each brought our own guidebook but we quickly ditched 3 of them and used the Fodor's. The site descriptions were dead on and their rating system was very helpful in deciding what to see in the limited time available. Their maps and suggested drives were also useful. We didn't use the hotel and restaurant recommendations much (we cooked our own), but when we did they were perfect.

This guide has helped us tremendously before and during several trips to Provence. It is easy to read, comprehensive in its description of the sights, and reasonably calibrated in its ratings (allowing you to distinguish between "must sees" and other sights). Its city maps are very good; I found them better than the ones in the Michelin guide, which is also good. The only drawback of this guide is that it is a pretty heavy paperback, so carrying it with you all day gets old after a while. Great for trip planning, though. Certainly highly recommended.

These works, mainly collected and commissioned by Queen Victoria and members of her family, provide a uniquely detailed record of the Queen's interests and of events, both public and private, during her long reign. Many are by such familiar names as Burne-Jones, Callow, Dore, Haghe, Hayter, Lami, Landseer, Leighton and Winterhalter.

Delia Millar has been working on the nineteenth century drawings and watercolours in the Royal Collection since 1977 and has published extensively on the subject. Her knowledge of the collection and the archival sources relating to Queen Victoria's patronage and collecting activities is unrivalled.

Around 7,000 drawings and watercolours are described, with over 1,100 works illustrated in black and wgite aand 33 in colour. The artists' relationships with their royal patrons are explored in the biographies, and extensive quotations from previously unpublished material in the Royal Archives provide the reader with new and often unexpected insights into the period. The catalogue also contains watercolours and drawings collected by other members of the Royal Family before 1901, particularly the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) and his brother Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh.

Stunning photographs!.......2000-09-05

Where was this book published? That is what I was asking myself after seeing this book at a local bookstore. As an avid collector of interior design/architecture books, I was stunned to see the quality of the photographs in the pages of the book. Some of the designers I have never heard of, but others are very respected individuals in their profession. I initially thought the $45 was a bit steep, but after owning and enjoying this book for the last couple months, I must say it is a very worthy purchase. Even the Design Diva Perla Lichi is in this book! Buy it, you won't be disapointed.

Beautiful publication!.......2000-07-21

I didn't expect this book to be the beautiful publication that is is. I read a very favorable review of the book in local paper, so I decided to buy a copy for myself. I was very surprised by the editorial quality of the book. I am bilingual and the writers of this book are top notch, in both languages. The book is in english and spanish, which I love because I know both languages. The photographs are really stunning, and give some remodeling ideas as well. In fact I recently moved into a new home and I use some design ideas from the book! I loved reading the projects about the interior designers in this 2000 version of the "Design" series coffeetable books. I am sure that if you purchase this book, you'll be very happy with your purchase. According to the book, there is a DESIGN 2001 coming later this year, along with an ART 2001 book as well. I look forward to these releases with great anticipation. Meanwhile this book replaces my previous home design book on my coffeetable.
