Customer Reviews:
the worst guide book ever.......2006-03-08
an avid reader, writer, and traveller, i believe religiously in the value of a good guide book. if i were to judge all travel guides based on my experience with Frommers Cuba i would be an atheist. Every major point proved to be the complete contrary. my guess is that the previous revue was written by someone from frommers. honestly, this book did not ruin my vacation, but if i had not realized from the beginning how wrong the information was, it would have completely destroyed my time in cuba.
Frommer's fan.......2004-01-06
Frommer's Cuba was my first guidebook purchase ever!! And what a great buy. I had done most of my travel research online or through word of mouth but with Frommer's, I was able to not only get detailed information of the sites of the country, I was also able to choose between several different options. I like how they categorized the different places within the book so you don't have to waste time with options that are out of your price range or out of your interest.

Multi-level fun and learning!.......2007-10-08
Photographs of costumed historical interpreters from Old Sturbridge Village beautifully illustrate this history book for beginning readers.
As children begin to master phonics skills, they will also be introduced to the world of crafts and farm life in the days of old! Learn About the Past also has a "Hop Scotch" game which allows your child to demonstrate how much he or she has learned.
Very highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:
Not really a how to draw manga book.......2006-12-30
This book has a variety of things inside. It has maybe like nine pages of hand poses (which is extremely helpful), eight pages of hair styles, but they only have 2 different hair styles for both girl and boy, which is pretty weak. They have examples of mecha drawings, guns, and swords. Another thing they have are examples of facial expressions, and fantasy creature ideas,(like dragons) and some little animal that looks suspiciously like pikachu to me. Why did I say not really a how to draw manga book? Well the reason is simply because the drawings are not manga styled at all! It's more like american comic style. Sort of like how they draw justice league on cartoon network. Now not all of them look that way because there are other artists' contrubuting to this book as well, and the drawings still don't look manga styled. So, if that doesn't bother you, then this may be the book for you. Some of you may benefit from the variety of weapons and everything. If that's the case, then go for it! This book may benefit you in the long run.

Dogtionary: Meaningful Portraits of Dogs
ASIN: 0670030597
Release Date: 2002-03-28 |
Book Description
On the heels of her engaging and inventive Dogtionary comes photographer Sharon Montrose's discerning demystification of the other side of the pet world. This humorous and affectionate photographic essay features cats of various breeds and personalities, captured with all the idiosyncrasies their human owners have come to know and love. Cationary is filled with more than ninety images that are alphabetized by each cat's name, from A to Z, in a unique format that juxtaposes them with their dictionary-style "kitty definitions"-captions as evocative, mischievous, and telling as the pictures they accompany.
Whether it's feisty Billy (who hisses, growls, and scratches), or Parker, the complacent Cheshire Cat-type (who does a little eating, a little playing, and a great deal of sleeping), feline fanciers will recognize their own pets among these charming creatures. For them, Cationary is a gift as heady as catnip-elegant, heartwarming, and beautifully photographed.
Customer Reviews:
Cat Lovers Delight.......2002-04-19
"Cationary" is beautiful, amusing, knowing - just like the photographer's "Dogtionary." Sharon Montrose really has done it again. You know the old saying, "Dogs have masters; cats have staff." Indeed. Cats are vain; they're haughty; they don't suffer fools at all, let alone gladly. Then turn around, and they're loving, and graceful, and endlessly inventive. They're all here in this delightful book, in all their warm, exasperating, funny, fussy, glamorous glory.
What a HAPPY, LITTLE BOOK!.......2002-04-08
I have to repeat it, WHAT A HAPPY LITTLE BOOK! Being in the animal care field (I work at a non-profit, privately funded shelter) not only do I collect books on animals, of course, I see a lot of sad situations everyday in my field. When this book arrived from Amazon (prompt as usual), after a hard day at the shelter, I was immediately overjoyed by the beauty of it and it helped me realize "Yes, this is why I do what I do, because people care"! The photography is excellent, sort of a photojournalistic point of view and the style of printing is in a soft, sepia tone. The captions for each photograph are right on target. Now to order her book on dogs....
Beautiful Book.......2002-04-07
All I could think about while I was looking through this beautiful book was how much I wished I could contract Ms. Montrose to take portraits of my cats. How thrilled the guardians of these cats must feel to have these gorgeous portraits of their cat companions.
I work for a publishing company so the typesetting did not escape my notice, either. Called "CatLover" it was designed by the author as per the cip page, and is so hip and quirky and appropriate. Impressive.
The format of the book is a photograph or photographs of a cat, it's name which falls into alphabetical order like Webster's on a much smaller scale, and then captioned by three definitions of the accompanied cat. My favorite is Gracie because that is the name of one of my own cat companions.
When you buy this book, get two. One for yourself and one for another cat lover in your life.
Wonderfully photographed.......2002-04-04
This book is a must have for all cat lovers! The pictures make you smile and the captions make you laugh. These photographs encompass the personalities and emotions of the cats that grace them.
Wonderfully done!
Product Description
Of Michigan's great wealth of natural resources, few have been more important in the past or are more highly valued today than our forests and the trees which compose them. Not only are they a continuous source of raw materials for industry and agriculture but they affect the climate, water resources, and soil, purify our air, furnish food and shelter for wildlife and are indispensable to our vast recreational and scenic areas. They form a basic part of our diverse natural environment - our ""biodiversity."" Their protection and management are vital to the state's wellbeing. Industries which depend upon trees for their existence are major employers and rank high in the state's economy. The annual production and manufacture of forest products is measured in billions of dollars. The recreation ""industry,"" including vacation travel, resorts, food, lodging, hunting, fishing, and camping, is likewise a multi-billion dollar a year business. Equally important is the intangible wealth which trees bring to us through sheer enjoyment of beauty and love of nature. Whether in field, fencerow, woodlot or forest, or along highways, rural roads, urban streets, or greenbelts, this bounty is ours for the taking. We have only to picture ourselves without trees to appreciate this value.

Trees of Michigan and the Upper Great Lakes.......2000-06-25
This book is excellent for learning more about specific trees of the Great Lakes Region. It goes into much more detail than any field guide will ever tell you. The book spends 2 pages per tree, detailing the life history characteristics and typical habitats that the trees will be found in. I particularly like the fact that for each tree you can see a photo of the entire tree, as well as close ups of the bark and leaves (sometimes fruit too). The book provides satisfactory descriptions for identifying trees; however, does not provide any way to "key out" trees, so you must have some idea what you are looking at before you refer to the book. As a student in Ecology, I have found this book ten times more valuable than the price; however, I found that I needed an additional field guide to key out unknown trees in the field.

Book Description
Jenifer Estess is a woman on the verge: She's about to launch her own company; she's looking buff and dating vigorously; she's driving in the fast lane -- with the top down. At the age of thirty-five, Jenifer dreams of falling in love and starting a family. Then she notices muscle twitches in her legs. Walking down a city block feels exhausting. At first, doctors write off Jenifer's symptoms to stress, but she is quickly diagnosed with ALS, a fatal brain disease that is absolutely untreatable.
Max out your credit cards and see Paris, suggests one doctor. Instead of preparing to die, Jenifer gets busy. She dreams deeper, works harder, and loves endlessly. For Jenifer, being fatally ill is not about letting go. It's about holding on and reaching -- for family, friends, goals.
Jenifer's girlhood pact with her sisters Valerie and Meredith -- nothing will ever break us apart -- guides them as Jenifer faces down one of the most devastating illnesses known to humankind. That same enduring pact inspires the creation of Project A.L.S., a movement started by the sisters that changes the way science and medicine approach research for ALS and the related diseases Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, and which has already raised more than $18 million. Will Project A.L.S. help scientists discover medicine in time for her?
Jenifer answers these questions and others in this beautifully written and wholly inspiring memoir that celebrates a life fuelled by memory. Tales from the Bed forces us to reconsider society's notion of "having it all," and illustrates, more than anything, the importance of endurance, hope, and, most of all, love.
Customer Reviews:
A very moving memoir.......2007-08-30
This was another memoir I wasn't sure I would keep reading. I am glad that I gave this book a chance. It is a very moving, sad book. I think about it fairly often.
LOVED IT!!.......2007-08-18
I've never been moved to write a review before, but this is such a moving memoir. Jennifer's story inspired me in every way. Although I'm completely healthy, I could relate to the book. Life is hard but we all should feel lucky for what we have, for what Jennifer didn't get to have. I want to kiss my kids more than I ever did before, after reading this book. And Jennifer was a great storyteller and writer. I'd recommend this to anyone in need of a good read in front of the fire. That's the kind of book this is. Curl up and enjoy.
Meh. Very sad and somewhat moving, but not entirely memorable........2007-08-05
First off, I have to admire how Jenifer used her illness and influence to educate others and raise awareness and money for ALS.
That said, I have to agree with the others who said that this book seemed to be heavy on the early-childhood memories and name-dropping than it was about Jenifer's self-awareness and feelings throughout her illness. I would have liked to know how more about how she created and structured Project ALS--it seemed like she just picked up the phone and called a few of her celebrity friends to organize a fundraiser. It might have been more powerful and meaningful if she had gone into more detail about her feelings and thoughts as the disease progressed.
I'm glad I read this book. I certainly do appreciate the courage that Jenifer and her sisters had around ALS, but I agree with the other reviewers who could have done without the list of her many celebrity friends and childhood stories.
lifetime movie.......2007-07-14
I actually bought the book after seeing the lifetime movie. I have to say I would recommend the movie over the book. Maybe its because I saw the movie first, usually its the other way around. The book is kind of boring compared to the movie, I guess I just expected more from the book.
Bad -- Very Very Bad.......2007-05-13
Alright, I was reading 'Tales from the Bed' by Jenifer Estess as told to Valerie Estess (NONFICTION) This lady (Jenifer) has ALS and this is her trials and dribulations of her life esp. when she is hit with the ALS. BEFORE I START I realize that ALS is a very serious terminal condition okay ... I got that ... anyway, it may be because it was written by her sister and not her (the author passed away) but this reads like a 5th grader wrote it. I kept thinking that it had to get better, NOPE. At the beginning she brags about being the most popular girl growing up and that she came from money etc ... okay, I'm having a hard time already ... then she (as an adult) finds out she has ALS. Her sisters have to take care of her in every shape and form, which is great to have family like that. Then I got to the part where her dad had divorced their mother (years ago) and they realized they weren't going to have the funds to pay for college cause daddy had a new family ... are you still with me, I know it's hard ... so they go egg his house (remember, the author has full blown ALS) and the author is excited because she RAN up (she can't move on her own?) and she got 3 bulleyes in a row on the door???? Alright, now I'm confused ... I proceeded to read knowing it couldn't possibly get dumber, which means that I'm dumb for thinking that ... they then decide that they want to get the word out about ALS to try and find a cure. They want to light a fire under the Dr.'s so they'll start working harder (yes, I know, they're delusional) to find a cure for ALS and they decide to put on a little play -- A PLAY PEOPLE!!! That is where I stopped ... I couldn't take anymore ... tihis book is absolutely ridiculous -- ahhhhh I feel so much better, thanks for letting me rant. Next time I'll take note of who they are featuring as comments for the book -- this one was Sarah Jessica Parker, that should have been my first clue!

Good Enough for the Facts---Not Much Else.......2005-05-01
With John Delorean's recent death in March, I though that it would be appropriate to read a book about Delorean Motor Company before I forgot for good. I didn't know the complete story about Delorean's dream of making a gull-winged sports car, and that's a shame. Although he never achieved this grand plan, I still think that his attempt was worthy in a market dominated by huge corporations.
But, just as Delorean Motor Company failed in the market, the book I read, "Dream Maker: the Rise and Fall of John Z. Delorean," fails, as well. It fails, because it's not genuine. Instead of letting the facts stand on their own, the authors continually ridicule Delorean. I don't know what their true intent is, but it seems that they are trying to create an arbitrary connection between Delorean's stainless steel car and Delorean's stained work ethic. Unfortunately, this type of writing doesn't offer anything new. Too often people criticize the poor decisions Delorean made, and they don't take into consideration the gravity of the situation. Also, they pay no mind that the drug charges against Delorean could have been a hoax, like some other people insist.
Overall, this type of bias undermines the somewhat decent quality of this book---the history of DMC.
Exhaustive But Biased.......2000-07-13
This story of the rise and fall of DeLorean Motor Company is exhaustively researched and fabulously detailed, but the authors make no attempt to hide their loathing for the man. From the Prologue onward, snide jabs (such as "The DeLorean story warns us to be more cautious and reluctant to entrust our dreams to others") pepper the narrative.
Personally, I would have preferred the facts speak for themselves. JZD was (and remains) a complex character whose story is considerably more multi-faceted than Fallon/Srodes allow for. You can see it physically pains the authors when they have to admit John's fidelity, sobriety and work ethic. A less-biased accounting would have allowed the reader to form his or her own opinion, and there's plenty of material to support any range of opinion.
But the book is readable and fairly well organized (except for the occasional sudden appearance of important people or events that we are told figured prominently earlier on) and, as mentioned, seems to be well-researched. I give it four stars for effort, none for attitude.
