Another book from the "original ghost hunter." Collected from his personal investigations rather than legends or urban mythology, Holzer takes us to private houses and publicly accessible places where ghosts have recently manifested themselves. Most of the houses Holzer has investigated are in the United States, but he includes several spots in Europe. This is certainly not a book of ghost stories, but a case by case study of hauntings and, perhaps more importantly, a guide book for those who want to experience something supernatural.

Would Make a Great Roadmap for a Trip.......1999-12-19

But the information was pretty outdated in a lot of cases. Even though the book was published in 1995, the information seems to be cut off in the late 1970s.

What I'd like to know about ghost books by Holzer is why every haunted house always turns out to have a whole bunch of ghosts once the psychics get involved. It really shakes my ability to suspend disbelief. But I suppose that's the whole nature of Holzer's books-- they're so chatty and credulous he comes out sort of as the Arch Merrill of ghost books.

A most fascinating source of information on the arms produced by Colt from 1847 to 1870. From the muskets he refurbished to the breachloaders chambering metalic cartrdiges, from prototypes to general prdouction, every arm is covered. Its history and basic information icluded.

This book was excellent! I couldn't put it down once I started it! Highly recommend it, along with a box of kleenex's!

Mixed..........2006-10-06

I definitely have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, it is an amazing story. I was adopted from Korea, have two other siblings that were adopted, have been involved in adoption groups my entire life and for a time, even worked in an adoption agency, so the book hit close to home in many aspects. I think there were very few pages where I didn't find myself sobbing. And I will also say that throughout reading the book, I would vary from reading the book to trying to persuade my husband to adopt/start the application process! ;) So, those are the reasons why one should read this book.

However, as an adoptee, I would say that I have a problem with the mother in this story sharing her daughter's story so openly. I firmly believe that an adopted child's story is their story and they should be the ones to share it...not their parents'. I understand to a certain degree that as an adoptive parent, your child's adoption is a part of your own story....however, details about the way her birthmother left her child are very private matters. I'm not sure if I would want my history out there for all to read and I don't think that the daugher is of the age where she would be able to fully process what it means to put your story in print. And while the author was extremely honest in this story about her own feelings when she initially met her daughter, I think that there would be a lot of things that would be really difficult to read as her adopted daughter....especially during adolescence.

So...although I think this is defintiely worth reading, for me, it left me with mixed feelings.

True Love.......2006-09-11

This book is amazing!

It is about an American mother who goes to China to adopt a three year old girl. This girl, Jacklyn, has lived in the orphanage for two years where she's taken care of a little boy, Xiao Mei Mei. She's acted like a mother to him and made sure the older boys in the orphanage don't pick on him. When Jacklyn, gets adopted she makes it her mission to get her mom to adopt "her baby". Her mom turns to her own family to help her get this baby adopted. Every night Jackyln asks when her baby is coming to America. "When Xiao Mei Mei come?"

Being adopted from China, I found the book very touching. When I went back to my orphanage this summer I saw a little girl who had been left at the orphanage the night before and I fell in love with her. I, like Mrs. Champnella, know what it is like to feel protective of a child you don't know and love that child with all your heart.

I would recommend this book to people who, like me, aren't too religious but won't mind hearing about it. It certanly didn't put me off the book. I think everyone would love this book because it's about the determination of one little girl to share her new life with the one she loves.

Read it, believe me you will love it!

A wonderful story........2006-06-09

I'm so glad the author wrote this book. It's the story about the love an orphan has for her best friend, her little baby. It's not something that the average person would choose to pick up, but I love reading adoption stories and this one was fabulous. Anyone who is about to adopt or even thinking about it should read this. It's heartwarming to read about different ways to create a family.
My friend, adopted from Korea as a baby, also loved it and now hopes to one day adopt from China as well.

you won't find a "bloody Mary" here because this book deals with the relations between Spain and England during the 1500's. Mary was the daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon.Seeing as Spain and England would go to war on numerous occasions culminating in the Spanish Armada defeat in 1588,Queen Mary's selection of a husband from Spanish royalty,seems like it would have been very unpopular in 1554. And indeed it was,one has to wonder if the objection of the English to Phillip of Spain had less to do with his Catholicism and more to do with his suspected Spanish sympathies.Sometimes a royal marriage between 2 rival nations can unite,but in this case it aggravated the rivalry.In this book the burnings and religious persecutions are downplayed deliberately to focus on the political rivalries between France,England, and Spain and about a dozen or more other countries. Indeed it is hard to keep track here.Still though it must have given Mary,secret delight to see Archbishop Cranmer burned however because he was the main prosecutor of Mary's mother,Catherine of Aragon and Cranmer sent her packing in humiliation.Headstrong Mary or "Bloody Mary" as she is known made in retrospect an unwise marriage in the Spanish union,and when you're the head of a nation,that can be a disaster.being the child of Queen Catharine of Aragon(of Spain),Mary saw her reign as a vindication of her mother and her catholic faith.All this at atime when England was becoming a world power and the main competitor was Catholic Spain.This book seems to see Mary's reign as a brief step backward and the Queens inability to govern because of infighting over numerous issues of religion and politics.It would take the reign of elizabeth 1 ,Mary's half sister to finally get england moving again.Other books however have been written that stress Mary's achievements,but this book focuses mainly on the Spanish/English conflict over European hegemony.As Oscar Wilde said,"people who have to go back to their childhood as the reason for their problems are boring"but in Mary Tudor's case this quote would not apply. The first 1/2 of this book is pretty much devoted to Mary's traumatic childhood where she is exposed to huge amounts of cruelty from her father and his cohorts.Her mother and her religion were Mary's only balm.when she became queen by accident,the results were not surprising.with Ann boleyn's title of "the great whore" and Mary tudor's "Bloody Mary",how is it everyone but henry the eigth gets a bad nickname yet he himself doesn't.At least Henry the Alehound maybe.Seems he was even bloodier than his daughter,sending people to the block on a whim,and his reputation even more tarnished than Ann Boleyn's could ever have been."Great Harry"!I don't think the author even hints the title.

I have several relatives with cancer,including my son who is a childhood leukemia surviver. I bought this book expecting to learn more about dealing with the diagnosis of the "Big C". I got that and much, much more.

This book is an inspiration for those touched by cancer, but also an inspiration to see how seemingly small decisions or details in life can a have huge impact. It also is an insider's view of what life in the Deep South was like in the mid-19th century.

Whether you read this book to better understand how to deal with cancer, how to face difficult circumstances in general, or how how a single person can make a huge difference in the lives of others, or just an interesting read you will not be disappointed.

Hamilton Jordan tells of his inspiring victory over the deadly disease that affects us all in one way or another - cancer. He also tells the intriguing and compelling history of his brief tenure in the White House under Jimmy Carter as well as the inspiring story of his uncle, who fought racism in rural Georgia ahead of his time.

But above all, this book provided me with a shot in the arm while I was in the hospital for over a month with pneumonia. Feeling somewhat down, this book really lifted my spirits.
Jordan proves that a positive outlook and one deeply rooted in prayer and faith in God immensely helps those in dire medical circumstances. I am a walking monument and a true believer of the power of prayer and faith in God.

I highly recommend this book to everyone - whether you're sick or not. It is ineffably a book that leaves you with a warm fuzzy feeling after you put it down. A great gift to someone you love - including yourself.

Good book..kept me up till 3 am.......2002-03-16

Not many books kept me up past my bedtime but this ranks as one of them. Jordan is frank, lucid and at times funny but I would prefer if he elaborates on his tenure as chief of staff further. I'm sure the conversation he had with Carter in his old car campaining for this little known person then would interest a lot of people...well he left that part out.
This book is about hope and doing something about it.

A Masterpiece.......2002-02-08

Unquestionably the finest memoir that I have read in my life. Mr. Jordan powerfully describes his most personal experiences with both cancer and American politics in an incredible manner. This book contains stories that every human should have the opportunity to read. Mr. Jordan is a cancer survivor, a family man, a politial leader, and most importantly a gentleman. My recomendation is to not only buy this book for yourself, but also copies for every person who is important to you as well. You certainly will be glad that you did. I thank Mr. Jordan for writing such a wonderful book for us all to read. It is certainly as good as they come.

just ok, dissapointing after reading reviews.......2001-11-09

maybe i expected too much, but this book only has a good title.

I expected a book more like "tuesdays with morrie". which was: you get inspired about life & realize there really is no such thing as a bad day through the story being told.

in this book, hamilton sort of just tells you to believe "there is no such thing as a bad day" and then he explains logically why a good mental attitude is good for you.

a better title would be: "how i learned that positive mental attitude is helpful in my battle against cancer"

i hate to diss the book, it just was not a fun or exciting read for me.
