Outdated.......2003-01-17
Only two chapters of the book are very helpful. The sections on the neighborhoods provides a good overview but overall the book is outdated and not reliable as a resource.
What A Bargain!!.......2002-07-30
I just moved to NYC from Utah, and needed one source of information from everything to finding a school for my 9 year old daughter to where the appropriate apartment for my family was. Welcome to New York was the only book I bought, and continue to use it on a regular basis as a source for all my New York needs.

Two thumbs up!!.......2001-03-14
I have been in NYC for 1year.I am from Japan. This book covers all information that I need as a newcomer to NYC.I was especially interested in the subject"for foreign newcomer".It is about New York Culture, etiquette and how to get a job.Now I am sharing this book with all my friends who are in the same situation as being a foreigner in NYC. I believe that this book is the most practical guide book about the Big Apple.
Fantastic Relocation Guide!!!.......2001-03-05
This book served as the number 1 resource I found when relocating to New York City. It provided me extremely useful and practical information relating to schools, apartment finding, weekend retreats and dog runs for my dog.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is moving to New York from any other city and needs some starting point, regardless of whether or not you are married or single.

Customer Reviews:
Why "You Can Draw Transforming Robots" gets 5 stars........2007-03-13
"You Can Draw Transforming Robots" is an excellent resource for the Amateur or Professional artist. This book thoroughly examines almost all of the different types of Transforming Robots, from the unforgettable Optimus Prime Mack Truck to the Valkyrie style Robots from the Macross Saga. Each type of Transforming Robot is broken down into its simple shapes, making it easy to understand just exactly how the Robots Transform. Once you understand the Transformations of the Robots the book then gradually adds detail to the Robot to show you the multiple levels of intricacy, until you see the robots final detailed form. If you love Transforming Robots like I do, you will definitely want to pick up this book.
Simply ... amazing.......2006-07-27
When I received the book and looked at it, all I could see are just boxes, page after page, BUT I WAS WRONG.
Drawing transformers are not simple, but after I read this book page after page, I realized that these boxes transformed into ROBOTS I dreamed to draw ... SO, this book is like the bible of understanding how to draw Transformers, the author are incredibly simplifying this amazing art...
My advice! It's for young and adults artist for sure.
Mecha and Transfomers fans - buy this now!.......2004-08-24
I've purchased every English-language how-to draw manga book I could find pertaining to mecha. This one ranks near the top.
Some books I've seen give good instruction on the step-by-step of how to draw, but are lacking in inspired designs. Others have good art, but are lacking in teaching you the thought process and steps needed to render your own work-they're just showcases.
Jackson-sensei manages to accomplish both his roles as teacher and source of inspiration. The book includes everything from what equipment to buy to get started to how to add character and personality to a mech.
The book covers a tough subject: transforming robots. Yet it manages to convey its concepts clearly in a manner highlighted by beautiful art.
Mr. Jackson ought to get a job at Hasbro or Takara. His designs definitely follow a the "Transformers" design philosophy, yet are unique in their detailing. The transformations look like they really work too.
What made me happiest was the last page, which promises a forthcoming volume titled "You Can! Draw Mecha".
Book Description
Part memoir, part monologue, with a dash of startling honesty, There’s Nothing in This Book That I Meant to Say features biographies of legendary historical figures from which Paula Poundstone can’t help digressing to tell her own story. Mining gold from the lives of Abraham Lincoln, Helen Keller, Joan of Arc, and Beethoven, among others, the eccentric and utterly inimitable mind of Paula Poundstone dissects, observes, and comments on the successes and failures of her own life with surprising candor and spot-on comedic timing in this unique laugh-out-loud book.
If you like Paula Poundstone’s ironic and blindingly intelligent humor, you’ll love this wryly observant, funny, and touching book.
Paula Poundstone on . . .
The sources of her self-esteem: “A couple of years ago I was reunited with a guy I knew in the fifth grade. He said, “All the other fifth-grade guys liked the pretty girls, but I liked you.” It’s hard to know if a guy is sincere when he lays it on that thick.
The battle between fatigue and informed citizenship: I play a videotape of The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer every night, but sometimes I only get as far as the theme song (da da-da-da da-ah) before I fall asleep. Sometimes as soon as Margaret Warner says whether or not Jim Lehrer is on vacation I drift right off. Somehow just knowing he’s well comforts me.
The occult: I need to know exactly what day I’m gonna die so that I don’t bother putting away leftovers the night before.
TV’s misplaced priorities: Someday in the midst of the State of the Union address they’ll break in with, “We interrupt this program to bring you a little clip from Bewitched.”
Travel: In London I went to the queen’s house. I went as a tourist—she didn’t invite me so she could pick my brain: “What do you think of my face on the pound? Too serious?”
Air-conditioning in Florida: If it were as cold outside in the winter as they make it inside in the summer, they’d put the heat on. It makes no sense.
The scandal: The judge said I was the best probationer he ever had. Talk about proud.
With a foreword by Mary Tyler Moore
Customer Reviews:
There's nothing in this book that I meant to say by Paula Poundstone.......2007-08-06
This is a funny book... I listened to it in my car on five CDs. Paula has been through a lot and yet she has not lost her sense of humor. If you ever get the chance to go see her live, don't miss it. She is one of the quickest and the best at adLib that I have ever seen.
Humor, History and Humility.......2007-07-29
What do Joan of Arc, Abraham Lincoln, Helen Keller, Beethoven, Charles Dickens,The Wright Brothers and Sitting Bull all have in common? Isn't it obvious? Paula Poundstone of course.
Ms. Poundstone makes both humorous and serious parallels with these historical figures as she goes back and forth between her life and theirs. We not only learn about her own history, we learn about her wry views on life, recovery from her addiction and her number one priority-her three children. As an added bonus we may even be motivated to read more about the people whose names are the titles of the seven chapters.
I especially appreciated her frank discussion of her alcoholism in terms of acceptance, taking responsibility as well as making amends to those whose lives were most affected, her children.
Well done Paula!
A pleasant, rambling read.......2007-07-26
This book feels a lot like listening to a Paula Poundstone comedy routine. She starts off on one topic and you never know where you will end up. I was pleasantly surprised by how personal she was willing to get when talking about her recent substance problems. She did so with much grace and self-deprecating humor. I just love her wit and found myself laughing out loud on several occasions.
There's Nothing in This Book That I Meant to Say.......2007-06-08
Great book. She writes with raw honesty and gentle humour. While reading the book, you feel like you're having a great heart to heart talk, with a good friend.
Nayslove.......2007-05-12
If you are a fan of Paula's, you will LOVE this book! If you aren't and are looking for a good read, you will enjoy the history lesson and fall in love with her. I laughed so hard I had tears rolling. It is both poignant and hysterically funny. She is brilliant as a comic, and now as an author.

Good story idea.......2006-05-24
The story line is very cute. It's especially good for a nanny or someone who watches children during the day (who's parents go to work) or for the parent to read to the child at night. It has little cut-out pieces that go into the folder on each page. I first saw this book at a friend's house (while babysitting) and went out and bought it for my "special books" bag.

Megan's Book.......2007-08-27
I bought this book for my daughter's summer reading list. It was a truly touching story, beautifully written and illustrated. My daughter loves animals, and to read about one who truly loves people was wonderful. My family really liked this book.
Dr. White.......1999-12-29
I gave this book to my six year old daughter as a Christmas gift. We read it together as a bedtime story and her first reaction was : "I want you to read it again right now!". In fact, she would have liked me to read it several more times that night. It is a beautifully illustrated, lovingly written story about a special dog who helps sick children get well. It touched each of us emotionally without being falsely sentimental. We both found it very interesting that it is based on true events. I certainly recommend it for children from 3 to 8 and feel older children would also find the story interesting. It is a wonderful book to give as a gift.

A Border Collie owners must- read.......2003-04-28
This book is the most acurate, informative book on Border Collies Ive ever seen and as I own Border Collies I find it excellent.
It tells you all you need to know from how to train/feed/raise a puppy, to breeding a litter of your own, how to show a Border Collie, Genetics, explaining everything in a clear easy to understand way.
I frequently delve into to my copy if I need to find something specific or just to go over a part again. I recommend it very highly to anyone who owns a Border Collie as you will enjoy it over and over again.
The author is speaking from many years experience and is very down to earth.
One of the Best!.......2000-06-07
This is a very concise and informative book about a wonderful breed of dog, the Border Collie. From basic obedience training to breeding and genetics, there is everything you need to know. Excellent information for raising a puppy and a guide on stages of development. I bought this book when I became the proud owner of my first pedigree Border Collie and found it invaluable. I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about this breed. Many thanks to Joan Bray for sharing her knowledge with the world.

Great first water garden book.......2006-03-18
I bought this book to help plan a water garded. It is easy to read, keeps your interest, answered my questions, and had good pictures.
I also bought "The Pond Doctor"(not as good for a first book, but good reference book), and "Pond Basics 3" (a pamphlet from Emperor Aquatics, quick read and short answers).
Good all round pond book.......2002-07-02
Good for beginners. Lots of tips for the different kinds of ponds you can build.
Very Informative.......2001-09-22
Have always had goldfish and their like but had never gone beyond the aquarium before. Finally this year I had the chance and the desire to build a pond. Of course I needed some help and this was the book I picked up.
I found this book to informative and helpful much like many other books on the topic, but what had sold me was the winter care part, seeing as my pond is in that mode six months out of the year...
Great Book for Beginners.......2000-11-07
This book is an excelent starting place for those who have ever wanted to install a pond or stream in their yard. It gives complete instructions about planning, purchasing, and building outdoor water gardens. It even lists the varieties of fish and plants to put in your pond. It also has a section on winter care of your ponds. This was helpful to me because it gets very cold during the winters where I live, and I needed to know what to do to ensure the success of my pond. Overall, this is a great book!
Great do-it-yourself book.......2000-04-05
The best all around garden pool and fountain book that I've read so far. I have a couple of other garden pool books including "The Rock and Garden Expert" by D. G. Hessayon, but none of the other books provide the depth of design ideas that Ortho includes in this book. Although the "Rock and Garden Expert" does have a better of selection of plants. Ortho's book also includes illustrations on exactly how to install the different types of ponds as well as information on filtration systems, edgeing, lighting, etc. The back of the book also contains lists and photos of various plants and fish that are suitable for the different types of water gardens. If you only want to buy one book on garden pools, this is the one.
Book Description
A complete guide to successful garden pool and fountain projects, packed with 260 photos, 60 illustrations, and loads of expert advice.
Provides practical, easy-to-understand descriptions and techniques for designing, constructing, and maintaining the water haven of every gardener's dreams.
Solution-based advice effortlessly guides homeowners looking to take the logical next step in gardeningadding beautiful water features to their yard.
Beautiful photography inspires homeowners to transform their gardens and lawns into the most talked about address in the neighborhood.

Book Description
Finding herself struggling with depression ("like a rude houseguest, coming and going of its own accord"), Sharon O'Brien set out to understand its origins beyond the biochemical explanations and emotional narratives prevailing in contemporary American culture. Her quest for her inheritance took her straight into the pressures and possibilities of American culture, and then to the heart of her family—the generations who shaped and were shaped by one another and their moment in history. In The Family Silver, as O'Brien travels into her family's past, she goes beyond depression to discover courage, poetry, and grace.
A compassionate and engaging writer, O'Brien uses the biographer's methods to understand her family history, weaving the scattered pieces of the past—her mother's memo books, her father's reading journal, family photographs, tombstones, dance cards, hospital records, the family silver—into a compelling narrative. In the lives of her Irish-American relatives she finds that the American values of upward mobility, progress, and the pressure to achieve sparked both desire and depression, following her family through generations, across the sea, from the Irish famine of the 1840s to Harvard Yard in the late 1960s.
"Many people who write stories of depression or other chronic illnesses tell tales of recovery in the upward-mobility sense, the 'once I was ill, but now I am well' formula that we may find appealing, but doesn't match the messiness of our lives," she writes. "Mine is not such a tale. But it is a recovery tale in another sense—a story of salvage, of rescuing stories from silence." Told with humor and honesty, O'Brien's story will captivate all readers who want to know how they, and their families, have been shaped by the past.
Customer Reviews:
Just a little disappointed.......2005-10-25
I read this book for the reasons I think most people would read a book with this subtitle - to see if I could identify with the author and perhaps gain some new insight from her experience. As I progressed through it, I was amazed by the congruence of our experiences, but felt a rising call to let the author know her conclusions left me wondering how she could have missed the bigger picture, the common denominations that make it possible for her to connect with people who do not have her specific family history. Ms. O'Brien traces her depression to Irish history, specifically to simply being Irish and a descendant of the town the famine hit hardest. But my own family history has not a drop of Irish in it and I turned down page after page of parallels in her experience and mine. I wanted to tell her, "forget the Irish, already, and focus on the feelings, the reactions to loss and shame that make us all human." Another thread in her story is her almost worshipful attachment to her father. My relationship to my own was similar and I also never married. Yet, when a therapist gives her some insight into how it has affected her, she rejects completely the opportunity to learn something from it and trashes the therapist. So... I am glad I read her book, to find there are others who have lived a life very much in many ways like my own, but I don't feel I was hearing wisdom from the writer and that disappointed me.
Outstanding memoir.......2005-08-18
This is a fascinating account of growing up as an Irish American in the mid 20th century told with dark Irish humor but always with love. It is one of the best accounts of the true impact of depression on the family as well as the individual. One of the best books I have read in the past year.
Must Read!!!!.......2005-03-01
I just couldn't put this book down. This helped me understand so much about myself and my family...and how we've all been shaped by the past. O'brien's humor and warmth stay with you long after you've read the book. A must read for anyone who comes from a family.
Beautifully written and full of insight.......2004-11-27
O'Brien has written a "Memoir of Depression and Inheritance" and she succeeds brilliantly in all of these intentions. This book works beautifully as a memoir, evoking in three dimensions, in colour and almost with smells and sounds, the world of upper-middle class expectations and genteel failure and the anxieties of her parents, and the alternative world of Elmira, which to me has the ring of a magic land. The people - mother, father, siblings, aunts - are whole and understandable and believable and sympathetic. The whole world within which the author strives to grow up is real and immediate on the page.
More than a memoir, O'Brien has the ambition of understanding inheritance. Her book links behaviour and consequence and puts forward explanations and theories of action and traces the interconnecting threads that link relative with relative and past with outcome. This does not obtrude in the narrative: her skill in writing presents these insights as natural extensionds to the momentum of the absorbing story.
The inheritance that is at the centre of O'Brien's understanding is the inheritance of depression. She addresses this with subtlety - she understands, and manages to present the complexity of inheritance and upbringing, accident and fate, biochemistry and environment, individual and social history. She is also alert to the accidents of everyday life that contribute to, and often trigger depression. I love her " `occasions of depression' which the vulnerable among us need to avoid or manage carefully." (p. 159) on the analogy of the "occasions of sin" that beset the unwary Roman Catholic.
The framework for a real humane psychology should be biography, and the complex threads through which a biography is realized. O'Brien's beautiful book is a contribution to this true science of psychology. The fact that it is contained in this insightful memoir and is presented in superb language probably means that it will never feature in psychology reading lists, but it should (though the first reviewer here gives us hope!).
A mirror into my own life.......2004-11-18
I LOVED this book. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down.
I grew up in the same Boston suburb as the author, in a family spiraling in similar downward economic mobility, and I'm about the same age as the author, so many of her experiences mirrored my own. Her mirror brought me surprising clarity and compassion with regard to my parents' struggles and the impact their struggles had on my own growing up.
I'm a psychologist now. When I look at this book from my professional viewpoint, as someone who treats and writes about depression, I also feel that it's a terrific resource. I will be recommending it to adults I treat for recurrent depressive episodes.
The author's depressions started when she was an adolescent, and continued intermittently through much of her adult life. Watching her gain understanding and mastery over this depressive tendency gave me a deeper understanding of how I can help the depressed individuals with whom I work.
BRAVO to the author, and thanks!
