Best For Those Experienced In The Use Of Homeopathy.......2000-07-17

This book is a good resource for those with some experience in the use of homeopathic remedies. It's definitely not the first book on homeopathy you should be reading, as it will not tell you how to take a case, choose the most appropriate remedy, select potency and repetitions, and recognize signs of a cure or partial cure as well as the signs of suppression or a noncurative aggravation. For an excellent introduction to veterinary homeopathy, check out books by Dr. Don Hamilton and Dr. Christopher Day.
Dr. Macleod's book lists some of the major remedies for a large variety of canine ailments (arranged according to body system) with a brief description of the symptom picture that would call for a particular remedy. Of course the list of remedies is not exhaustive and this book is not intended to substitute for looking up the remedies in a comprehensive materia medica.

Right on the mark!.......2007-04-28

I originally found this book in our library, and upon reading it, decided it was a MUST for our own personal library! Our family treats homeopathically and found it difficult to treat our dogs because of lack of information (in regular homeopathic books) that actually relate to them (dogs). The author goes into great detail about symptoms, illnesses, etc. and how to treat them. While most remedies are the same ones we own and use, we've found it necessary to expand our "medicine" cabinet to include several that we had never heard of. This is a truly wonderful reference book for any dog owner to have on hand. From puppies to geriatric dogs ~ behavior issues, drooling ~ you name it. Great book!

Questioning Author.......2006-08-07

In reading this authors chapter on Kidney disease,I find it rather disturbing to know that he recommends regular vaccinations. If he is a true Homeopath,then why is he unaware of Vaccinosis? A leading cause of Cancers.
While his subject matter is interesting,I find it hard to trust him now on any remedies he recommends.

Colorful stunning garden vistas.......2003-05-25

The pictures in this book make the price right. With big glossy colorful pictures on every page and a minimum of text this book serves the visual learner well. If ever the saying "a picture is worth a thousand words" were more fitting than to this book than let me see that book too. These pictures are of some of the most magnificent gardens you'll ever want to see. Of course the pictures make you imagine the same results are possible in your garden and to a certain extent this can be true. However, there really is no reference to garden zones so what looks like a good idea may not work in your garden. The sections are very beneficial for creating visually dazzling effects in your garden like the addition of trellises and arbors which I found particularly helpful. Also the rustic additions to the garden make for some very interesting results. Although no building plans are included enough of the structures are visble to get an idea on how to create your structure. There are however plans for laying out your plants so that they are arranged according to heights and seasonal blooms. My major complaint with the book is that the pictures feature mature gardens that obviously have years of growth and care already invested in the beautiful results. If you are interested in water gardens there are some fantastic examples of splashy habitats, including the water garden of Claude Monet. The special touches section seems to have been an afterthought when putting this book together because it is brief and not as elaborate as the other sections. With nearly three hundred pages/picutres you are sure to see some good ideas for your own garden. Highly recommended for the garden enthusiast.

This volume is divided into four main parts- window boxes, arbors and trellises,shade gardens and water gardens. The accompaning text is as easy to read as the photographs are on the eyes. If you're looking for ideas for your next garden project and don't feel like reading a lot of dry text this book is for you.

Far out..........2007-09-21

Yes, "far out" are the first and last words that come to my head when I think of this most unique experience of a book.

It's one of my favorite books as I am at a complete loss to classify it. More books should defy categorization like this does. Other reviews will give you details of what it contains.

I'm just going to express my awe at the facility with which Robert Anton Wilson can jump from one subject to another and still consistently hold my interest.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Robert Anton Wilson is a very strange man. Here he writes about all
sorts of things, conspiracies, magic, the occult, weird happenings and
how lots of things like this tie together and are meaningful. The other
funny thing is the whole numerology bit, where the number twenty-three
is seen as being very important, and turns up in all sorts of places.

Final Secrets.......2007-04-04

"Cosmic Trigger" is worth reading both for its historical value and its relevance today. Many of the important figures of the 60's and 70's, like Tim Leary, J Edgar Hoover and Robert A Wilson, are dead and gone, but the problems they represented are still with us. Permit me to quote one paragraph:

"Paul Watzlavik, among others, has performed classic experiments in which totally sane people will begin to behave with all the irrationality of hospitalized paranoids or schizophrenics - just because they have been lied to in a calculated and systematic way. This sort of 'disinformation' matrix is so typical of many aspects of our society (e.g. advertizing and organized religion, as well as government) that some psychiatrists, such as R.D. Laing, claim it is the principal cause of psychotic breakdowns. When the politics of lying becomes normal, paranoia and alienation become the 'normality' of the day. The government, as the principal liar of the 1960's, was, of course, more deluded than anyone else, since its reality-map had become a classic disinformation system. The establishment began looking around for the villains to blame for the escalating social disintegration. Tim Leary got elected, by unanimous acclaim, Villain #1."

Nominations are now open for Villain #1 of this decade. Osama seems to be leading.

Reality tunnel changer.......2007-03-16

After reading this book, I tuned in another reality tunnel (you'll understand what I meant after reading the book).

What can I say, I recommend this book to ultimate freedom seekers and the ones(probably the same people) that enjoyed Carlos Castaneda series( especially Journey to Ixtlan).

Great writing, great man, great insight. I'd have to write a book just as a review for this one so I'll stop here :-)

Wow! Some People Really Don't Get It..........2007-02-04

I was amazed at several of the reviews here which give this book a low rating. They say it was "unreadable", "silly" "garbage" and other such put-downs, just because they were unable to comprehend it. This book has so many levels to it that many people WON'T get it (unfortunately) but just because quantum equations look like a bunch of scribbles to me, I don't go around referring to quantum physics as "silly" "garbage".

This is one of the best books on ontology and the nature of reality for the layman which has ever been written (or at least in the top ten). Please keep in mind, all who would criticise, that just because you yourself were not properly equipped to understand and enjoy this volume, that does not make it drivel. R.A.W., one of the best, at his best.

Rest in peace Mr. Wilson....

Great walks for those interested in history.......2000-06-13

Viennawalks is a substantial book, with four detailed walking tours. It contains some of the basic information, such as transportation, eating, telephone usage, and banking (no hotel or restaurant listings). The main part of the book are guided walks around four parts of the city. The Stones of Vienna takes you through the oldest buildings, including the Jewish quarter; Vienna Gloriosa passes St. Stephen's Cahtedral, Mozart's Apartment, the Old University; Noble Vienna navigates through the Hofburg (Hapsburg's residence); and Fin de Siecle Vienna looks at turn of the century art and architecture (Otto Wagner's designs, including the Karlsplatz subway station, the museum of fine arts and the Secession). The descriptions are rich in history are are quite detailed (60-70 pages per walk). It is very readable and contains a few pictures. If you want to take one or more leisurely walks through Vienna, and have the time to go slowly enough to soak up the information from the book and the sites in front of you, then this book is highly recommended.

A must for those who are serious about exploring Vienna.......1999-03-16

Viennawalks is simply the best book of its type I have ever read. I first bought it in 1985 and have read it each time before I left for Vienna (at last count, eight!). The author's writing style is unlike any walking tour book you have ever encountered - it reads like a novel. One can tell from the descriptions and antidotes that the author is truly in love with the subject - and it shows! By books end, you feel as though you know the Author. I only wish he would write a volume II that explores the neighborhoods outside of the innerestadt (like Hietzing, Neubau, Spittelburg and Mariahilf). I would be the first in line to buy it. One word of advice to the potential reader - Reading the book before you go is certainly advisable, however, it won't mean a whole lot. But, after your return, you will not be able to put the book down! I have personally worn out 3 copies in the past 14 years! Good reading!

I Loved It!.......2001-01-18

Mischling, Second Degree is a great book! It will keep you interested from the first page to the last. The ending of this book is wonderful, and the begining is great too. If you like books on the Haulocost, you'll love this one!

An Important Book for Young People in the Modern Era.......2000-11-16

I must admit, I have not read this book for many years, in fact, not since I was in the third grade. A rather insightful teacher assigned me this book, and it has profoundly enriched my understanding of the holocaust, evil, and human nature, by allowing me to see a humanized portrait of NAZI society at a very early age. As I have been raised Jewish, I have been nearly bombarded with information about the holocaust from a Jewish perspective (not that I regret this). However, I feel that we can only come to understand such a great evil if we understand that its perpetrators were as human as its victims, motivated by the same kinds of fears, hopes, false rationalizations, etc. that in some small way motivate every human being from time to time. This book is an excellent way to introduce this humanizing element to a young reader, and it helps to make sense of a senseless event in our history.

Read It, You'll Love It!.......1999-03-23

This book is a treat! You can't read it just once; I've been re-reading it for about fifteen years! Ms. Koehn makes the point that "war is hell" simply by stating her experiences during wartime as they unfolded. And the character study of Ilse's two grandmothers, one practical and one refined, is one of the best in literature, particularly when the gruff one's true colors are revealed at the wonderful ending. Would that all autobiographies were as terrific as this one!

Good Book...Bad Conclusion.......1999-01-26

Mischling, Second Degree: My Childhood in Nazi Germany was an excellent book. There are a couple problems such as the situations inflicted on the people were not explained because the book was written by a child who did not understand or was aloud to hear what was going on. The ending was very weak because it was predictable and didn't explain what had happened to the father.

Extraordinary.......1997-10-12

I picked this book up at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum bookstore by chance a year and a half ago, not realizing that it would quickly become my favorite book ever. I've read it more times than I can count. Each time it is like talking to an old and familiar friend. I feel like I know Ilse intimately, though I have never met her. To me these are the trademarks of a masterpiece.

I Know Ilse Koehn.......2007-05-13

I knew Ilse Koehn when she was writing this book. She always spoke with such love for her father, while never explaining why. Now I understand. I've read her book and taught it in middle school; not because we were friends, but because this age group can relate to all the emotions Ilse expresses in so many aspects of an "outsider/survivor" child during World War II. Young adults today must cope with life as it moves on, just like Ilse, who faced a life which often made no sense.
As an adult she writes her memoir. Did the girl, Ilse, understand? Or does Ilse, the mature woman,understand the events which effected her existance? Does the passge of time give us a clearer vision?
My students look at Ilse's life and writing this way. Ilse Koehn's book makes them think. Ilse's writing helps many students find understanding.

This book tells the story of Ilse Koen itself, who was told by her parents out of trying to protect her, that her name is Kohn (which would be "a good german name" as her father puts it) and not Koen, which would suggest jewish heritage; and indeed, she is "Mischling, second degree". In Nazi Germany there were the Nürnberg laws, that said, that Jews must be expelled "onto 3rd and 4th degree". To protect little Ilse, her parents don't tell her of her jewish heritage and send her to her arish grandmother. She is even goin on "Kinderlandverschickung"(sort of holidays for children away from their parents) with the BdM (Convention of german girls). Though she never is impressed by Nazi-rituals, she is forced to go with the crowd. A really good book for young teenagers.An exemple of naivety and fear of brutal force is given in this book. Refer also to similar book: Hitlerjunge Salomon.

Absolutely mesmerizing-- and important-- story.......1999-10-29

This book changed my life. I found this book by chance at around age 10, and Koen's story was and remains to me the most vivid, affecting account of WWII I've ever read. Intensely personal and told from a child's point of view, I highly recommend this book; it is a crystalline window into the insanity of Germany under Hitler and of policies that categorize people by their race. I'd very much like to hear from others who've read it.
