Hidden treasure.......1999-04-13
I was given the opportunity to catalog Dr. Gentry's herbarium collection at the Desert Botanical Garden in 1987-88. I haven't seen the new edition mentioned here, but read the original work at the time I was cataloging his herbarium specimens. Through it, I was able to share his experience as an explorer in the spirit of John Wesley Powell, someone who knew that the American southwest is best delineated by watersheds, not along false lat/long lines. I met Dr. Gentry a couple of times, and remember the occasions well. Last time I saw him, when I was cataloging his collection, I overheard a conversation between him and a consultant for the Fort McDowell Indian Community. The consultant was asking about desert-adapted crop plants. Dr. Gentry went into great detail describing many desert plants suited to agriculture - tepary beans, jojoba, Lippia (Mexican oregano), agave, chiltepines, gum arabic, etc. I learned a lot just by eavesdropping. The consultant listened, but did not hear the words. He recommended that the Fort McDowell people plant cotton. Not because it was best suited to desert agriculture - far from that. They planted cotton because it needs vast quantities of water. They did not want the best desert-adapted crops. What they wanted, instead, was the best crop for wasting water, so that they could establish valid rights to the water. Worse, I watched them clear off vast acreages of mesquite forests to make room for the water-wasting cotton crop. The Hopi call this koyaanisqatsi. This book should help folks in southwestern north America realize that we have a bounteous resource, if we can only learn to use it.
Excellent reference book.......1999-01-17
Located in a transition zone between the Sonoran Desert and the tropics, this region is well known for its biodiversity, thanks to a 1942 study by botanist Howard Scott Gentry. Revision of his classic work began before his death in 1993. For researchers, this is a must-read book. It provides a clear overview of botanical studies of the Rio Mayo, a contemporary view of the vegatation, excerpts from the original text and an annotated list of plants.

Lost in Vancouver.......2005-03-24
If you want a guidebook that is filled with smirking insider speak about trendy establishments, faddish bars and alternative shopping locales-du-jour, with random lists of so-called "cool" places, and smug reassurances that only pedestrian tourists "ooh" and "aah" at Gastown and take pictures of the totem poles outside of Stanley Park, then this is the guidebook for you.
If you want something a bit more organized and useful, get a real travel guide to Vancouver. The maps in this one are poor, the "lowdown" lists will have you traipsing wildly all over the city without a sense of Vancouver's "highlights," and the most fundamental of city navigation tips don't appear until p. 203 of a 214-page book.
With it's "Irreverent" (maybe better dubbed "Irrelevant"?) guides Frommer's has found a clever way to increase market share with assurances readers will feel like their being led around the city by a "savvy local." Instead, I felt like I wasn't being led at all. There's a reason travel advice should be left to the travel professionals.
Self-important and cliquish, this book is -- helpful guidebook it ain't.
Very helpful!.......2001-08-29
This book helped make my birthday weekend AMAZING. Instead of hanging out at all the standard tourist-y spots, we were surrounded by locals for most of the trip. This book made our trip, and next time we go somewhere, we're relying on the irreverent guide. (Restaurant guide was especially helpful, but the maps weren't so great...it took us forever to find Havana-but it was totally worth it)
Frommer's Irreverent Guide to Vancouver.......2001-06-06
This book is great!, i don't know Vancouver but i got excited about my first vacation in that town. Now, i know where to go and how spend my days. This book references cool places, addresses and costs. I have other two books about vancouver and this is my favorite.
A fun and informative book for any "tourist!".......2000-04-10
This book was wonderful, as soon as I opened it, I got excited about our family vacation. It has things for kids, adults and every age in between. It references costs, addresses, mileage and the "inside scoop" on nearly every place to visit in Vancouver, B.C. - Fantastic! ...A "Vancouver bible!"
Book Description

Book Description
Overview: This survey for the Western Civilization course has attained much prestige and a reputation for excellence over the last six editions. It offers a strong political narrative with balanced coverage of social, cultural/intellectual, economic and women's history. The scholarship is second to none. THE WESTERN EXPERIENCE provides an interpretive and analytical approach which will appeal to professors who want their students to come away from their courses with not only a grasp of the facts, but also having been challenged by interpretations, having analyzed assumptions, and having used their critical thinking skills. The lavish map and illustration program provides visual sources to aid students in learning, and the carefully chosen art program with its long explanatory captions provides a strong art history element to the text.
The book presents a chronological survey of the history of the West while weaving the narrative around several recurring themes: social structure, the body politic, organization of production and the impact of technology, evolution of the family and changing gender roles, war, religion and cultural expression. This helps students to understand the continuing thread of development that exists throughout history.
In developing the seventh edition, the authors focused on increasing the coverage of women and the family throughout the text in an integrated fashion, increasing the coverage of popular culture, and increasing the number of historical debate boxes that proved so popular in the sixth edition. The Medieval chapters (6-11) have been significantly revised by new author Barbara Hanawalt. Also, attention to the flow of the narrative led to breaking down long paragraphs into shorter ones with new explanatory headings, increasing accessibility for students.

The Batman and company.......2005-08-10
Highly reccommended for the Batman fan of any age. Another "How to Draw" book from the series by Walter Foster. For 7 and up, it helps if you have some very basic drawing skills before you try this book, but you don't have to. These "how to draw" books that feature comic heroes are even more fun if you have some basic skills first, then use these books to practice with. The Batman has been drawn in many different styles over the years, and this is the style from the 1990's animated series from Warner Brothers. It is very comprehensive and has Batman, Robin, Bruce Wayne's butler Alfred, Police Commissioner Gordon, Batgirl, and villians including The Joker,Two-Face, Mr. Freeze, The Penguin, Catwoman, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, The Riddler and more. Gadgets like the utility belt and batarangs are included, of course the batmobile, and even backgrounds from Gotham City and the Batcave to draw. It starts in very simple steps that progress to a complete drawing. To see more drawing books for kids you might want to check my lists on the subject. See Ed Emberly's Green Book, or Mark Kistler's books to get some basic drawing skills. I also reccommend books by Jack Hamm if you want to step up from there.
Grab your art supplies, ready, set... go!.......2004-01-19
This beautifully illustrated, easy to follow, step-by-step, how-to guide is the first book you should buy to learn the basic drawing techniques you need to accurately depict each cartoon character from the Batman universe (in the Bruce Timm/Animated Series style).
The information and instructions contained in this book are wonderfully organized and presented in step-by-step format (from rough sketch to finished drawing), include a list of tools and materials you need to get started and cover topics that include: guidelines on basic figure drawing, head and figure proportions, movements and expressions, comparisons of male and female figure features, and perspective and foreshortening for backgrounds and figures. The book also contains a detailed treatment on how to draw each character, including Batman, Robin, Alfred, Commissioner Gordon, Batgirl, Catwoman, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Two-Face, Mr. Freeze, The Penguin, The Riddler, The Joker, and Ra's al Ghul. As a bonus, the book teaches us how to draw settings and accessories like Gotham City, the Batcave, the Batmobile, guns, bombs and Bat-a-rangs.
This book is a simple, yet excellent resource on how to create your own adventures for the Dark Knight, at the same time that you begin to understand the basic principles of cartooning and animation.
A must buy for kids and adults who want to draw the Batman universe like professional artists in a relatively short time. If you prefer a more general book on how to draw DC Comics super heroes, I recommend buying How to Draw Batman and the DC Comics Super Heroes by Ty Templeton instead, since it contains around 90% of the characters featured in this book, plus a lot of other characters from other DC Comics universes.

awsome book but..........2002-10-27
This book starts out like a book for kids.but towards the middle it gets a lot better.I needed help on posses and 3 point angles. This book is a great book if ur a beginner or love batman like me....
BATMAN!!!!.......1999-10-05
Very insightful.... it covered a lot of things that more realistic art books failed to cover. Great for kiddies or beginners. But try as I might, I'm still a cruddy artist, and I'm sort of peeved that this failed to cover shading and the thickness of lines, which is actually what I *really* need help on.
If you really want to draw Batman, buy this book........1999-09-22
I went to 6 stores in search of this book because I was dying to learn how to draw Batman. Yes, I know, I sound like a loser, but to be honest, it's a great book. However, if you lack artistic abilities (like me) you'll struggle quite a bit on catching onto the drawing styles. I know this book is directed towards kids but I don't care. I like it. I just wish it were a longer book.

The definitive book on drawing DC super heroes........2004-08-30
This beautifully illustrated, easy to follow, step-by-step, how-to guide is the most useful and complete book on the basic drawing techniques you need to accurately depict the cartoon characters of the DC universe (in the Bruce Timm/Animated Series style) available on the market today.
The book also contains a detailed treatment on how to draw DC heroes and villains, from the well-known (Batman, Superman, Flash, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, the Joker, Poison Ivy, Lex Luthor, etc.) to the less-known (Starman, Huntress, Black Canary, the Gentleman Ghost, etc.) As a bonus, the book teaches us how to draw places like Gotham City, Metropolis and Themystira.
This book is a simple, excellent and thorough resource for creating your own DC Comics super hero adventures, at the same time that you begin to understand the basic principles of cartooning and animation. This is a mandatory book for the shelf of kids and adults who want to draw the world of DC Comics like professional artists in a relatively short time.
A note of caution: this book not only includes everything contained in two previous Ty Templeton books: How to Draw Batman and How to Draw Superman, but also a lot more.

Disappointed.......2005-08-27
This is book is for advanced drawers. If you've been drawing for some time and are a competent artist, then this book is for you. Beginners will feel very frustrated.
I bought this book for my daughter, a budding cartoonist. But, I'm very disappointed with it. Having drawn all my life, I could have worked out the same steps by sitting down and showing her from a comic book.
The 'Warm up' page is farcical. It has 6 drawings of various gadgets that Batman uses, such as a tracer, Batarang remote, PDA, Batarang, Batwave receiver and Batmobile.
In the batmobile "warm up" example there is 1 drawing that consists of a rectangle with 3 circles drawn at each corner! I suppose you're meant to work the rest out for yourself?!
These objects require at least a page of 6-8 steps, but you have 1. You will have to sit down and work it out for yourself. Just as if you opened a comic book and did a step-by-step for your child.
Batman and Bruce Wayne are no better. There is nothing to tell you how far down batman's eyes appear, how high his ears go, how big his feet are in relation to the rest of him or how many heads tall he is.
As said above, it looks promising, but only if you're an advanced drawer. The fun in this book may be in sitting down with your child and breaking down the advanced steps to something they can handle.
Disappointing book. NOT FOR BEGINNERS.

Good But Left Me Wanting.......2000-10-16
This book had good technical information/illustrations for building a water garden but I would have liked more information on ideas for pond settings, examples of different types. After reading it, I was looking for another book . . .
An excellent book with lots of pictures and instructions.......2000-08-18
I knew I wanted to add water to my garden but I was not sure what or how. This book is filled with examples and ideas. It also contains detailed instructions and illustrations for installing various ponds and fountains. Then it goes on to complete the project with descriptions and photographs of plants for in and around a pond.
This may be the book you've been looking for........1999-07-29
Chances are, you're like me...you'd like to place a small pond in your garden. Not a large, elaborate, expensive, complicated pond; just a nice little pond with a perfect design. If so, this is the book for you. I have searched quite some time for a book that can guide me through this task without overkill. This book has it all in just the right amounts. Excellent photo's that don't look like they were taken in the sixties! Clear, concise and to the point, yet full of imaginative ideas. At this price, it's a steal.
Book Description
Many studies have portrayed Judaism in Antiquity as sectarian, with a variety of groups all claiming to be The True Israel. Early Christianity is alleged to have begun in this context as one more Jewish sect claiming such authority. However, the second-century Christian Justin Martyr is the first person known to have used the phrase `the True Israel'. This book examines the uses of the names `Jew', `Hebrew' and `Israel' in the surviving literature - especially the Bible, Dead Sea Scrolls, Philo, Josephus, New Testament and Mishnah - to determine whether this is an adequate or accurate picture. It discusses the associations of each word, as determined by their actual usage and collocations rather than their theoretical origins. It will be of value to scholars of ancient Judaism and early Christianity.
Book Description
Throughout Maya Angelou’s life, from her childhood in Stamps, Arkansas, to her world travels as a bestselling writer, good food has played a central role. Preparing and enjoying homemade meals provides a sense of purpose and calm, accomplishment and connection. Now in Hallelujah! The Welcome Table, Angelou shares memories pithy and poignant–and the recipes that helped to make them both indelible and irreplaceable.
Angelou tells us about the time she was expelled from school for being afraid to speak–and her mother baked a delicious maple cake to brighten her spirits. She gives us her recipe for short ribs along with a story about a job she had as a cook at a Creole restaurant (never mind that she didn’t know how to cook and had no idea what Creole food might entail). There was the time in London when she attended a wretched dinner party full of wretched people; but all wasn’t lost–she did experience her initial taste of a savory onion tart. She recounts her very first night in her new home in Sonoma, California, when she invited M. F. K. Fisher over for cassoulet, and the evening Deca Mitford roasted a chicken when she was beyond tipsy–and created Chicken Drunkard Style. And then there was the hearty brunch Angelou made for a homesick Southerner, a meal that earned her both a job offer and a prophetic compliment: “If you can write half as good as you can cook, you are going to be famous.”
Maya Angelou is renowned in her wide and generous circle of friends as a marvelous chef. Her kitchen is a social center. From fried meat pies, chicken livers, and beef Wellington to caramel cake, bread pudding, and chocolate éclairs, the one hundred-plus recipes included here are all tried and true, and come from Angelou’s heart and her home. Hallelujah! The Welcome Table is a stunning collaboration between the two things Angelou loves best: writing and cooking.

This cook book is a wonderful find. It was given to me as a gift and I love the stories that come along with the awesome recipes. Maya Angelou dishes out some very interesting stories, which go hand-in-hand with the good home cooking in the book. It's more than just a cook book!
Hallelujah! A Great Gift..........2006-12-15
This is a timeless book you can use again and again. I received it as a gift and immediately was drawn to its stories and recipes. It's so much more than a cookbook. From the cover to the recipes to the pictures, I just love this book! When I first got it, I didn't want to put it down, and I've never felt so interested in a cookbook. Maya offers traditional southern soul food recipes as well as other dishes that played a significant role in her life's journey. I love the diversity of recipes and humorous and heartfelt anecdotes. Just reading the stories warmed my soul so much and made me smile, and made me anxious to try the recipes. I soon made the smothered chicken and fried chicken, and both dishes were delicious. By sharing her heart and favorite recipes, Maya Angelou touches your soul with a reminder to not only make the most of every meal, but also to live life as fully and vibrantly as the satisfying buffet of recipes she offers here.
