                      Book Description

The California Escape Manual is a comprehensive guide for urban Californians interested in relocation out of state. It contains a gold mine of ideas, resources, tables, checklists...and entertaining stories from ex-Californians. The author shows readers how to find their perfect hometown by exploring vast sources of free information on destination cities and town. The book is based on interviews with relocation executives, headhunters, Realtors, movers, school district officials, and other experts. The book also includes interviews with families that found happiness outside urban California.

Chapters tell readers how to find a job, how to spruce up their homes for a quick sale, and how to settle into a new community and get along with locals. Other topics include packing and moving, interstate business networking, and helping children adjust to relocation. The book includes:

                      - Dozens of Web site recommendations - 12 pages of tables (on weather, crime, housing costs, etc.) - 19 pages of resources (directories, magazines, chambers of commerce, state and federal agencies, employment recruiters, etc.) - Check lists for financial planning, networking, home buying, exploring new towns - Profiles of 30 towns (including some hidden gems and overlooked small cities)

                      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Out of date stats but still a great book.......2004-08-08

This book has cost of living, etc. stats from 1996, but many of the trends still seem accurate when I compare them to the research I have done. I highly recommend this book for someone ready to get out of California. The advice and experiences of the author and others who have relocated are practical and very helpful.

It is part of current missiological orthodoxy that newly created churches should obtain independence from cross-cultural missionaries as soon as possible. It is not often realised that much Victorian missionary thinking shared that objective. This important new work examines the ideal of the self-governing church in the Victorian period through a study of the official mind of the Church Missionary Society. The study begins with an examination of Henry Venn's, the famous CMS Secretary, commitment to self-supporting, self-propagating and self-governing churches. Was he a lonely figure battling against the accepted wisdom of the mid-Victorian period? The author argues that he was not, and was, if anything a slightly conservative spokesman for much current wisdom. Far from his views being abandoned at his death, they were the accepted orthodoxy within CMS until the end of the century. Although they came under increasing attack in the nineties, it was not until the beginning of the twentieth century, particularly under the influence of Eugune Stock, that they were finally abandoned. The importance of this study lies not only in its ability to explain Victorian missionary development, but also because it takes on board the age-old issue of how quickly should a church become self-governing.

But her powers also became her connection to the outside world-both real and spiritual-after she struggled through an isolation that grew out of her diagnosis of multiple sclerosis at the age of thirty-nine. This book is interesting and well written. MaryRose Occhino talks about some of the challenges in her life, and her upbringing in a large family. In 1992 she developed multiple sclerosis. She describes how that disease affected her physically, but also augmented her psychic gifts.

MaryRose's psychic journey took a sudden turn with the 9/11 attack, and soon she was flooded with requests for her talents, and eventually achieved a great deal of exposure. These encounters and developments eventually led to her being tested by Gary Schwartz, M.D., of the University of Arizona, in double blind experiments. MaryRose was found to be extremely gifted, with results that astounded many.

This book is full of fascinating examples of Mary's gifts on display, her dialogues with those who have passed into the afterlife, and her constant amazement and appreciation for what she experiences. Her humility shines through.

All of us want to believe our loved ones are still with us. "Beyond These Four Walls", simply written, Mary Rose Occhino helps us to understand, by all of her readings, this is possible. She comes across as believable. A very interesting and good read. I recommended this book to readers who had no previous interest in this type of subject, yet, nevertheless found her very helpful.

I wasn't going to review this book. Then I came here and saw a couple of negative reviews and thought I really wanted to put my two cents in.

Mary Rose Occhino presents, in this book, convincing evidence of the reality of psychic phenomena. There are a couple of reviews here that dismiss her gift as hallucinations or coincidence. Those comments miss the mark entirely. They could be made only by folks who are so hostile to the concept of psychic phenomena that they resist all evidence.

If these reviewers have proof that Ms. Occhino is a hoaxer, then, by all means, let them present their proof.

Absent proof, they are just blowing smoke.

Again, a couple of reviews dismissed the book as being poorly written.

Well, one reader's pleasure is another reader's bore.

I enjoyed this book. Ms. Occhino writes as what she is: a New York area, ethnic woman from a working class, immigrant background. Her voice is authentic, and an authentic part of the American pageant. This isn't James Joyce, but then many of us don't want to read James Joyce everyday.

I felt very comfortable reading Ms. Occhino's prose. Her style can be compared to the style of a letter from a good, old girlfriend. There are family tragedies and triumphs, bouts with serious illness, trips to Catholic Church, and the occasional celestial gift.

I was thinking of buying a copy of this book for a young friend who is just now discovering her own psychic powers and struggling with dealing with them. Ms. Occhnio presents an example of how to cope with the mixed blessing of psychic ability, and remainging a warm, genuine person at the same time.

For more than 800 years, Ireland has had to define itself politically in relation to its next-door neighbor and sometime occupier, England. That fact has fueled generations of Irish revolutionary activity--and given rise to countless heroes, ordinary men and women who suffered and died in the cause of freedom.

One person's hero is, of course, another's criminal, and Irish American journalist Terry Golway takes pains not to paint too saintly a portrait of men such as Daniel O'Connell, a Catholic emancipator who loathed rebellion but loathed oppression even more; Michael Collins, the soldier and politician who helped bring about the modern Irish state; Gusty Spence, the Ulster Protestant militant who, while in prison, became a convert to the cause of nonsectarian peacebuilding; and Gerry Adams, who helped bring militant Catholics into negotiations with their Protestant counterparts and the English government. While striving for balance, For the Cause of Liberty takes an overwhelmingly pro-Irish stand vis-à-vis England, which may not please some readers, as he charts the lives and accomplishments of dozens of historical figures major and minor. Those heroes of old may soon belong to a fading past; as Golway notes, approvingly, Northern Ireland seems well along on its path to peace, while the Republic is rapidly becoming "post-nationalist," with one of the fastest-growing economies in Europe, "outpacing Britain and even Germany." His vivid history reminds readers well, however, of the cost of that newfound wealth and harmony. --Gregory McNamee

                                    Book Description

Ireland's struggle for freedom reaches back much further into the annals of history than most of us can imagine. Since the eleventh century, when legendary king Brian Boru united the chieftains of Ireland to resist Viking invasion, countless individual leaders have fought to preserve and protect Ireland's political and cul-tural autonomy. In a chronicle of unprecedented breadth and authority, "For the Cause of Liberty" tells the stories of these heroes -- including both men and women, Catholics and Protestants -- who enabled the Irish to free themselves from the yoke of colonial oppression. Journalist Terry Golway reconstructs the entire thousand-year history of Irish nationalism, covering each benchmark event in Ireland's political evolution and presenting a vivid, epic tale of both the famous and unsung patriots who changed the course of Ireland's history. Among these are Wolfe Tone, a leader of the 1798 rebellion who cut his own throat rather than submit to a hangman; Kevin Barry, executed at age eighteen rather than turn informer on the eve of independence in 1921; and Bobby Sands, an IRA militant who died on a hunger strike in 1981, calling international attention to the conflict in Northern Ireland. The engaging and admirable story of how the Irish have saved themselves, "For the Cause of Liberty" is a peerless work of scholarship, and it offers a fresh context for the ongoing discussion of Ireland's political future.

5 out of 5 stars How little I knew of Irish struggle.......2003-11-19

I'm part Irish-American and I knew some about the conflicts between the British and the Irish. After reading For the Cause of Liberty, I now realize how little I knew.

The book provided an excellent history of the Irish struggle. The information on the Irish heroes (both Protestant and Catholic) who fought the British was very readable. I never knew that the French had a hand (or tried to) in the rebellion in the late 1700's. The extent of the savagery and despicable behavior that the Irish endured was very effectively presented. Overall, an excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Irish History.......2003-08-02

Golway has a very easy to read writing style. He gives seemingly very intimate details about each person he talks about, and also gives you alot of background information that you might miss in other books. In some parts of it, you can almost imagine that the heros of old are still alive and fighting for freedom.

He covers more about history 1850 onwards than previously, but he gives fair time to both of them. A fascinating book for anyone who wants to know about Ireland, or the history of Revolutions in the world.

4 out of 5 stars Ideal for its Purpose.......2003-06-25

Evaluating Golway's book in terms of its subtitle-- a thousand years of Ireland's heroes-- I think this selection is fantastic. As a semi-biographical profile of many prominent, legendary, and simply amazing Irish revolutionaries, this book does exactly what it should. Golway discusses such notables as Brian Boru, the O'Neill family, Wolfe Tone, Daniel O'Connell, Charles Stewart Parnell, Arthur Griffith, O'Donovan Rossa, Kevin Barry, Richard Mulcahy, the leaders of the Easter Rising, Eamon de Valera, Michael Collins, Kevin Barry, Bobby Sands, Countess Markievicz, Bernadette Devlin, and many more. Other reviewers have summarized quite well what the book is; I would like to provide readers with an idea of what the book is not. This would make excellent supplementary reading for anyone with an interest in Irish history. However, Golway does focus on elements of biography and therefore does presume a fair bit of knowledge on the part of the audience. If you are looking for a good starting point in learning about Irish history, I would not suggest this title. On the other hand, if you already have a general working knowledge about Ireland, these biographies would very, very much enrich your experience. Bottom line: buy it for the biographies and consider any Irish history you pick up along the way an added bonus.

                                    3 out of 5 stars Good overview.......2002-11-20

Golway's summary of 1,000 years of Irish history provides a very good overview of the highlights of Irish history. It is a great introduction for someone just starting their study of Ireland's rich history. For those who have delved into the history already, it is an enjoyable read. Golway just skims the surface, though. The collection is far from complete in any of the eras it covers.

4 out of 5 stars A great beginers guild to "the troubles".......2001-09-07

As a newcomer to the subject of Ireland and in particular to "the troubles", I found this book to be quite informative. Of particular intetest is that the time frame starts so early in history. After hearing about the problems in Northern Ireland all my life through the media, it was interesting to hear a version that, in no way, favored the British side. It was a fascinating walk through of the whole story of the conflict from the very beginning to present day. The book, however, does not move as quickly as had been propounded. It is a great work, regardless.
