best guide to the state ever.......2003-03-12

I live in Northern Virginia and am always looking for places to make quick getaways. I own other travel guides to the region, but they are not near as thorough or detailed as this one is. The author covers just about everything you can think of--museums, historic sites, places of interest, hiking, biking, canoeing and kayaking, amusement parks, golf courses (even miniature golf courses!), sailing & boat excursions, parks, bookstores, antique shops, restaurants (both cheap and luxury places), motels, B&Bs, and much, much more.
What I really like is that he visited every place he writes about (man, what a job that must have been!). He gives overviews of the places, what makes them special, and what he experienced while there. For a travel guide, it is written in an entertaining style, and it has lots of local insider tips and information. Forget Fodor's and Frommer's; buy this one and really get to know Maryland

The best marker technique book you can find. Very easy to follow and apply them to many different renderings. The technique shown in this book is well known to industrial designers especially Car Designers or product designers. You'll see same techniques used on beautiful Car Design Renderings from The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. Car designers use vellum instead of marker papers. They use both side of the vellum to create different value effect with same marker. This book will make your renderings and presentation stand out from your competition. Well, I've searched for many, MANY, books and when I found this one I couldn't belive on it! It shows marker techniques very simple to use and step by step. But I'm still a student of architecture, so it's also good for those who already knows a little. It's woderful for those that like design! ^^

Learn to do amazing renderings with markers and pastels.......1999-06-08

As an upcoming concept designer I've been searching for a book which explaines the techniques on how to render a sketch with markers and pastels. This book shows you how to rendering different products with the same technique. Some of them do almost look as if they were a photo. It is much of a Japanese styl, but it really illustrates your idea. Actually, iF Amazon would have shown the cover you would see whats really in this book. If you like those illustrations done by industrial designers, drawn with markers and pastels on vellum, with flying perfect lines, amazing shadows, you will love this book.

BUT WAIT! The only bad thing is that it shows you how to work the SAME tachnique on a variety of objects. The technique is great, sure is, but it is one technique!

Good Book for Pen and Ink Newbies.......2001-12-05

There is something about the stark beauty of pen and ink that invites a lot of experimentation. This book can act as an introduction for creating such pen and ink drawings. I particularly liked the multi-media chapters. My favorites showed step-by-step demonstrations of creating color pen and ink drawings using colored inks, ink wash and stipple.

There are instructions for creating your own quill, bamboo and reed pens. Each demonstration lists the items needed to create the drawing project shown. Many types of pens are used such as brush pens, markers, dip pens, technical pens, fountain pens, etc. If you are already an experienced pen and ink artist it is doubtful this book will teach you anything new but for someone new to such drawings it can be a fun book with plenty of tips and projects to practice everything shown.

A moment in time for the Borzoi.......2007-05-13

This is a wonderful reproduction of a 1931 publication that was re-printed in 2005.

It begins with a bit about how to properly handle a new book to preserve the binding.

I loved it, the photos of Borzoi from the period and the vintage language from 1931.

I have a Borzoi who is not quite three years of age as of this writing. She is a lover.

I enjoyed reading about some of her ancestors...

Enjoyable reading and practical advice.......2007-04-29

This was my first gardening book and I have read it many times over. The book is very logically organized, with sections on annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, grasses, bulbs, and water gardens. There even is an appendix devoted to shady gardens. While perhaps not comprehensive, the plants chosen are those that are classic to Tennessee and Kentucky. The author has a very down to earth style in writing, touching on the basics of soil/light/water requirements, routine care, companion planting, and personal favorites. The photos are very nice. I have found the book to be a great resource for choosing plants for where I live in middle Tennessee, and the style of the writing is simply enjoyable to read. I have read it many many times and have not tired of it. If you live in this area, it is a great first book to get you started. If you are an advanced gardener, you might not find it quite comprehensive enough, but I still think you would find it enjoyable.

First moving to KY I purchased $300 worth of seeds from EBAY only to find that my 5 acres was solid clay and would not hold the type of plants I wanted to grow. This book was a blessing, in that it taught me how to plant in Kentucky and which plants would flourish. A plus for anyone in this state.

Don't miss this beautifully crafted biography of a man everyone has heard of but few know that much about, other than his connection to the Kennedys and now Calif. Gov. Arnold Schwarzeneger, his son-in-law.

Shriver's story is fascinating on its own. His championing of the Peace Corps, Johnson's War on Poverty, and the Special Olympics is amazing and remarkable. What a difference he made in the world, and how much more he might have been able to do had he only had his family's support for the presidency.

Scott Stossel is a biographer to watch. His easy-flowing style, coupled with his strong sense of history and way with words, make this a biography not to miss -- even if you're a conservative, anti-political, rabble-rousing atheist. You won't be able to put it down.

Read this book not only for its historical value. Read it also for a contrast to the current Bush administration and the kinds of leaders currently recruited to public service. Bush seems to punish diversity of opinion within his circle, and he promotes less competent folks while rooting out those who get "off message." When a problem comes up, Bush instantly wants to zero in on one single solution.

In contrast, Sargent Shriver, as this biography shows, was someone who gathered the best minds about him. They would openly and heatedly debate each other about not only the problem, but also about various solutions (rather than one alone). What kept them from all hating each other? For one thing, they knew that Sargent Shriver valued each of their varied contributions; for another, they also knew that they were serving the greater good, not just their boss, Shriver, or the president (JFK or LBJ).

This book will impress you with how much good was accomplished by one man. But it will also impress upon you the fact that the good things Sarge accomplished were the product of a man who had a largeness of mind, an openness to different ideas, an intellectual curiosity that always sought out the wisdom of others.

A Great Biography of an Inspiring Man.......2004-09-22

Sarge is without a doubt a long overdue and first-rate biography of a great American. Most seem to have forgotten what an inspiring man Sargent Shriver has been. The way in which Stossel records the war on poverty is second only to the many facits of the Shriver-Kennedy connection. Don't be turned off by the length. Historians must read this; book lovers will enjoy it.

I wish that there more of a discussion of the importance of Executive Order 11063. Also, did Shriver have the opportunity to visit some of Peace Corps Volunteers in Iran's shahrestan?, viz., in Aliabad, Bidokht or Birjand?
