Another Great Book About The Maine Coast.......2007-09-06
MOON HANDBOOKS COASTAL MAINE is yet another great book about the Maine Coast, with plenty of information about great shopping, dining, and recreational activities to help you look great for your significant other and/or your favorite celebrity. However, there is a flaw- the failure in the section on the Portland area to mention either any independent music stores (Bull Moose Music) or the Maine Mall. Overall, however, this is a wonderful book that anyone with geographical interests will love.
Moon Handbooks Coastal Maine.......2007-05-10
Don't even think about planning a trip to Maine without first reading the Moon's Handbook Coastal Maine. It is the best travel guide. The author offers lots of great information.
excellent helper.......2006-11-07
The Monn Handbook Coastal Maine was invaluable in planning and during our Sept. trip to ME. We used the info to make reservations at motels and restaurants and we were never dissapointed. It also included excellent craft shop recommendations and places to see that were really off the beaten path. I would recommend this guide book for anyone planning a trip to ME.
Guide to the Beautiful Maine Coast.......2006-01-24
After spending last summer in southern Maine, I was delighted to see this book. It provides information such as travel strategies and touring itineraries. The author lives on the mid-coast, but grew up around Portland.
You know the format for these handbooks means you get solid information on an area. I'm looking forward to another summer in Maine where I'll see so much more with this handbook to guide me.

Great in 2001, okay in 2006.......2005-12-30
I LOVED this book. My family and I travel Maine each year and this book is THE guide (along with the Maine Atlas). It has helped us refine our experience in Maine to a very satisfying level.
The guide to natural sites/walks/boating is still wonderful.
However, if you've been to Maine before, you know that businesses come and go with alarming rapidity. This is especially true in the Eastern Coast. Most of the restaurants listed in the guide are long gone or under different managements, so don't count on finding a place to eat based on this guide.
Maine, by Kathleen M. Brandes.......2004-08-30
This book has become an invaluable source! I've now travelled to Maine twice and brought the book both times. Brandes provides a wealth of information, especially for those things off the beaten path. The book includes very helpful maps - on my last trip I left my Maine atlas at home and found the maps included in the book to be quite helpful. The spine on my book is really starting to see some wear - I enjoy reading it even when I'm not travelling. I highly recommend this book, especially if you are planning to travel to the northern, less populated regions of Maine.
Authoritive Guide for Touring Maine.......2003-07-19
I've spent time at the book stores recently researching books for my upcoming trip to Maine. My wife and I plan to spend 4 nights and 5 days there and wanted plenty to see and do where we wouldn't necessarily meet thousands of other travelers since I'm not too much into the whole crowd experience. Brandes' book is so well researched that you can't go wrong with it!
While other typical books that are similar, such as Fodors and Frommers, have quite a bit of information in its own right, I think that this particular Moon Handbook is better equipped to give better detail of interest whether site seeing, dining, entertainment, lodging, etc.
I recently completed a Web site for a bed and breakfast located in Machiasport (down east) and had to do quite a bit of research on the area to enhance their site. My research was conducted primarily via the internet over the course of a few days. I'm glad to say that after I received my book and compared information, everything I could find on the Web in and around Machiasport was already included in sufficient detail in this book! I would have saved myself a few days of searching.
If you want to tour Maine or already live there but need to places to explore, the second edition Moon Handbook on Maine is the way to go.
When I vote with 4 stars, that means the product was excellent. When I vote with 5 stars, it goes beyond excellence in my view and is considered best in class. This book is "THE" authoritive book on touring Maine. Excellent purchase!
A Requisite Resource For Tourists & Locals Alike!.......2002-05-31
First of all, I have to mention that I live in Maine. And I can tell you from experience that the beauty of Kathleen Brandes' book lies in the sheer span of coverage, which is considerable, matched with a propensity for detail, which is astounding! Even the "Native" Mainers will find much to enjoy in this book. This is a rich, dense, and completely user-friendly volume, folks!
I'll give you an example. I'm a photographer based in the Bangor area. I bought this book for my personal library which aids me in seeking out photographic areas of interest. Last week I traveled to Lubec, Maine - and I used this handbook for lodging and dining info. I located the Eastland Motel in Lubec based on this handbook, and met the proprietor - Lee Aragon - who cheerfully provided suggestions for exploration in the Lubec-Eastport-Campobello region. I mentioned to Lee that I had read about her in The Maine Handbook...and that she was correctly described by Kathleen Brandes as a "Lubec booster". Lee was tickled pink by this, and by extension, I was able to get some nice local insights that I would never have known about otherwise.
Paging through this Maine Handbook, you get the feeling that Kathleen Brandes is a scholar of "All Things Maine", and she is enjoying every minute of it. And who can blame her? Maine truly is.....well.....the way life should be.
Buy the book, come to Maine....and if you already live here, buy the book anyway! It has become something of a "state bible" for me. Can't image traveling without it.
And there is something in this book for everyone. Kathleen has you covered, whether you are single, married with children, an armchair traveler or someone who simply wishes to know more about the Pine Tree State. Longtime locals and prospective tourists alike would do well to mine this gem of a book. I have two dog-eared copies....one for home, and one for my car - enough said.
Maine Handbook Makes Mainers Mighty.......2001-07-30
This book nearly saved my life when I moved to Maine and didn't know a darn thing about the place except: lobster and Acadia National Park. The author lives here and definitely has a huge fondness for the people, land and language of Maine. It really is like having a knowledgeable local to show you around. She gives great information on cultural events (fairs and festivals..some pretty obscure), great day-trips and off-the-beaten-path hikes and trips (some of which I mentioned visiting to long-time residents..and they didn't know about them!), local-isms (and they abound in Maine), tips on lobster eatin' and blueberry pickin' and more! And, most importantly for the visitor or newcomer, really good driving directions. I've heard that there is a new (2nd.) edition of this book..but this first is such a classic that I hope they didn't goof it up. However, it would probably update the visitor on some items that are no longer in existence: for example, the Bangor Blue Ox minor league baseball team. It also reveals the exact location of Stevie King's house..which is not often given out!
Book Description

Complete with color maps, photos, insightful sidebars, and a thorough introduction to the region's history, Moon Handbooks Acadia National Park is the best guide for an enriching and extraordinary park experience.
Customer Reviews:
Lousy, inexperienced guide.......2007-01-15
You would be WAY better off just getting a book or pamplet from the National Park ranger station. There's very little information here, just stretched out over the length of a book. It's basically a Maine guide that they've repackaged as an Acadia guide.
Here's a couple examples of the lame reporting that went into this book: They tell you how in some little local restaurants you might find the menu on a chalkboard and you should order from that. Oh, really???? Wow, never would have figured that out on my own.
They try to throw a bone to the crowd that travels with dogs, but clearly they've never done so themselves. So they tell you that the local pet store carries a list of boarding facilities. So let's get this straight: I spend all kinds of extra time and money getting my dog to a national park, only to board my dog??? The same pet store passes out a list of dog friendly restaurants, something people might actually want to know. But you won't find that out in this lame book.
Book Description
Few places offer such diversity as Acadia National Park. You can discover the coast's countless islands, each one distinct from the other, watch the sun set from atop Blue Mountain, stroll through the charming village of Castine, stretch out on the beach at Lamoine State Park, or hang out on the fisherman's wharves in Stonington or Corea.
Expert travel writer Hilary Nangle helps you have a truly personal experience in this beautiful region. Suggested travel strategies and lists of must-see sights provide you with the real insights so you can decide where you should go, stay, and eat—without hassles or regrets. Hilary details where to hike, paddle, bike, climb, ski, snowshoe, and picnic. Complete with maps, photographs, illustrations, and special emphasis on leading destinations such as Mount Desert Island, Schoodic Peninsula, Isle au Haut, Donnell Pond Public Reserved Lands, the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge at Petit Manan, and outlying towns.

Book Description
Whether executing violent offenders deters murder and violent crime is a major aspect of the capital punishment debate. Contributors to this anthology use both theories and hard evidence to support their divergent views on the death penalty's power of deterrence.
Book Description
Proponents of capital punishment insist that criminals are dissuaded from committing murder if they know they will be executed. However, critics maintain that capital punishment's supposed deterrent effect is not supported by statistics, studies, and other sources.

zoo animals.......2000-07-15
I have loved to draw all my life, but never been able to draw animals in proportion. i think this book shows you very well.
Book Description
56 million US households have pets whom they consider to be a member of the family. This award-winning audiobook is a soulful outreach to pet owners who lose an animal companion through death or other circumstances. In an artful balance between helpful suggestions from her professional experience as a therapist and her personal experiences as a pet owner, Deborah covers coping with feelings, memorial tributes, the value of reminiscence, illness death of a pet, grief phases, associations to other losses, what to tell children, issues for senior citizens and more.
Customer Reviews:
Pet Loss.......2006-08-29
Journey Through Pet Loss...takes us in the steps of grieving for a loved family pet. Deborah's audio also seems more personal to the listener. It touches you--because she understands the loss."
Bennet Pomerantz AUDIOWORLD
Ways To Work Through Your Grief.......2002-04-25
Sometimes losing a dear animal friend can seem more overwhelming than the loss of a human in our lives. This is one of the many things that complicate the grieving process. The author explains that there are many bounds set by society and our own inner voice that attempt to dictate how long and how much we should mourn a beloved companion's passing. She explains why the loss of an animal can be a much more raw experience than the loss of a family member, friend or relative because of the mixed feelings and complicated relationships that we have with other humans. That simple, loving animal spirit that was so close to you is suddenly gone. There is no buffering element, no memories of a heated exchange that soured your relationship - nothing to blunt the pain. This can bring feelings of confusion and guilt, or painful memories of the loss of a child or spouse, and many other emotions. The author does an excellent job of explaining the reasons for these feelings, and suggests many different ways of working through them. She explains the phases of the grieving process and where to find help if serious emotional states are triggered. She also explains that we frequently project a part of our own psyche onto our pets, which can unleash unexpected effects on their passing.
Despite the fact that I might have made this sound rather technical, it is not. The author puts forth a very gentle and concerned effort to do what the title implies - help you through the journey of pet loss.
Very Good Book.......2001-11-26
I recommend this book to anyone who needs help through the stages of grief. It is practical and insightful.
Sensitive help from one who has been there herself.......2001-06-21
The author uses moving vignettes from the death of her own pet to help others review their own feelings of grief. After each topic, she encourages the listener to turn off the tape and reflect on his or her own memories and feelings.
She discusses pet memorials, stages of grief, euthanasia and hospice options. She emphasizes that each person has his or her own unique feelings. Different individuals might make different, equally valid choices for the beloved pet.
I liked the sections on complicated grief. Pet loss can often reactivate deeper feelings about past losses. The pet's death may be a chance to work through other life experiences.
Many of her general suggestions for dealing with pet loss could be useful for the entire family.
The section on children's reactions to pet loss could have been stronger. I had a sense that the author was more comfortable dealing with adults and their animals. However, she did bolster her section on children with quotes from other authors and gave useful references.
Carol E. Watkins, M.D.
"Must" listening for all dedicated pet owners & companions........2000-07-03
In Journey Through Pet Loss, Deborah Antinori address every aspect of losing a beloved family pet including coping with feelings, memorial tributes for animals, burial and cremation issues, grief phases and tasks, complicated mourning, associations to other losses, what to tell children, and other forms of pet loss such as lost pets and pets who must be given away. This two-cassette, three hour, audiobook production is technically flawless and will prove to be an invaluable and much appreciated addition to personal, school, and public library collections.

Nice for Greenhouse Growers.......2001-01-01
"Orchids are Easy" is a helpful book for someone planning a greenhouse. The first part of the book goes into detail about the planning that goes into building a greenhouse--including location, building materials, necessary equipment, watering and climate control.
Brief chapters cover the culture of orchids, propogation, pests and diseases. The final section is the "A-Z of Orchid Species". This area has nice closeups of each featured plant, but is pretty limited in scope. You won't find anything about Cattleyas, Phalaenopsis or Cymbidiums here.
If you are looking for information on Oncidiums, Odontoglossums and some Dendrobiums you find solid information and nice photography.

Moss Hart was in the thick of American theater when everyone wore black tie on opening night and the world's most witty people entertained each other around a grand piano at late-night supper parties. It's an era of glamour that will never come again, but we have Hart's words on paper, and that is no small thing. A renowned director and theatrical collaborator, the brilliant Hart died too soon after the curtain went up on Act Two. If you want to know what it was like to be on the inside track in NYC in the '30s, '40s and '50s, here's a good place to find out.
Book Description
The Dramatic Story that Capitvated a Generation
With this new edition, the classic best-selling autobiography by the late playwright Moss Hart returns to print in the thirtieth anniversary of its original publication. Issued in tandem with Kitty, the revealing autobiography of his wife, Kitty Carlisle Hart, Act One, is a landmark memoir that incluenced a generation of theatergoers, dramatists, and general book readers everywhere. The book eloquently chronicles Moss Hart's impoverished childhood in the Bronx and Brooklyn and his long, determined struggle to his first theatreical Broadway success, Once in a Lifetime. One of the most celebrated American theater books of the twentieth centure and a glorious memorial to a bygone age, Act One if filled with all the wonder, drama, and heartbreak that surrounded Broadway in the 1920s and the years before World War II.
Customer Reviews:
Timeless!.......2006-11-03
A look back in time to understand the struggles in defining-and reaching your goals. A study in human nature. Things haven't changed. Great lessons still!!
Good autobiography.......2006-03-19
This book is a down to earth, heart warming story of how Moss Hart became a premiere playwriter. Good book for those interested in working in the theater.
Act One.......2005-08-10
A great read; very inspiring and funny and well written. A tale of a writer in a city which he knew so well, at least Broadway, his own neigborhoods, and the subway. His spontaneous decisions are what great showbiz tales are made of and from! His book made me want an Act Two and Act Three....excellent investment. Book in GRAND shape. Quick delivery too.
Superb Theater Autobiography.......2003-06-23
Act One is one of my favorite books. I have rearead it often since the first time I picked it up in my late teens. I love the anecdotes about the Broadway greats ans near greats and how Mr. Hart became famous, but my favorite parts of the book concern his memorable Aunt Kate, a woman whose fate in life was other than she deserved. She is very humanely portrayed, and so is the rest of Mr. Hart's family. I also enjoyed learning more about George Kaufman and his wife. This book's great!
The best book about the theater ever written, Act One........2003-06-13
Moss Hart is arguably one of the finest and most successful authors of the 20th century theater in this or any other country. Like many successful men in the theater, he came from a background of serious poverty and the true drama of Act One is his perseverence and victory in extremely trying circumstances. There are fascinating glimpses into the theater world of NYC in the 40s and 50s, excellent sketches of George Kaufmann, Beatrice Kaufmann and Max Siegel, and poignant views into the people and places that forged Moss Hart into the extremely urbane, charming and successful man he became, against the hardest possible odds. Superb book!

Rave Review.......2004-04-08
Most thoroughly enjoyable read in quite a while. The theatre is truely timeless, for this book, written around 1958, is still quite resonant today. His prose is wonderful - "There is nothing like tasting the grit of fear for rediscovering that the umbilical cord is made of piano wire." And it was also, at times, hilarious. I laughed out loud at many parts. An engrossing, exciting, truly touching book. It has the momentum of a play; suspense, pace, and excitement, which is all the more amazing because you already know what a famous playwright he would become. The incredible drive, perseverence, and just plain miracles in his life!

Sad, but a touching book.......2000-10-31
I really thought this book was touching to me. In her life she had one sister and one brother. Her parents died when she was at a young age. When she grew up she wanted to be just like her dad. Her dad use to care for the poor. In Catherine's life she moved a lot. She to love Jesus. She was giving to the poor just like her dad. She became one of the first Sister of Mercy. I think people would be touched by this book and will treasure it for ever.
Sad, but a beautiful book.......2000-10-31
I loved this book because it was very touching and sweet. In here life she moved a lot and both of her parents died when she was very young. She wanted to be just like her father. He gave to the poor. As on her journey to be like Jesus it was up and downs but she became one of the first Sister of Mercy. I would tell everyone in the world to read it. They would become more like Jesus.
