    Book Description

This concise, user-friendly guide provides all the information necessary to identify the flowering plant families found in the wild or cultivated in northern temperate regions. Two hundred and eighty-six families are covered by the bracketed identification keys, which are accompanied by a comprehensive explanatory guide to their use. A fully illustrated discussion of floral structure and terminology precedes the keys and brief descriptions of the families (arranged according to the Engler and Prantl system) follow. A chapter giving advice on identification beyond the level of family, plus an annotated bibliography and glossary complete the volume. This new expanded edition features restructured morphology and terminology information, revised and improved keys, and more accessible and informative descriptions not found in previous editions.

    Book Description

Massive glaciers, raging whitewater rivers, remote lakes, giant old-growth forests, fierce mountain ranges, wave-battered coastlines, thundering waterfalls, and plentiful wildlife--these are but a few of the natural wonders awaiting travelers who explore British Columbia's extensive network of highways and back roads. From Vancouver to the Alaska Highway to the Canadian Rockies, this rugged and beautiful land is one of the most pristine places left on earth.

Scenic Driving British Columbia has everything you need to plan your expedition. Author Scott Pick, a native British Columbian and professional writer and photographer, has written more than a travel guide--this is a passionate portrayal of his homeland. Area histories, exciting side trips, and details about recreational opportunities accompany clear maps and mile-by-mile trip descriptions of 29 drives, including three amazing Circle Tours that integrate BC's popular ferry system. An extensive appendix of phone numbers, addresses, and web sites completes the package to make Scenic Driving British Columbia an indispensable companion on your journey across this inspiring province.

2 out of 5 stars Better off elsewhere.......2005-01-09

WOW- what an incredibly useless book! Where do I begin? Well, first off you would think a book entitled "Scenic Driving" would include some first rate maps - WRONG. The crude monochromatic maps included in this book are less descriptive than a treasure map on the back of children's placemats at a Burger King. Secondly, the author, Scott Pick, confusingly lays out 26 drives he recommends to take in B.C... leaving out some crucial information - like how to get from one drive to the next if you intend on doing more than one on your trip. And you can't use the maps HE provides - you're gonna have to go and get ANOTHER map elsewhere!

Believe me, Jessica Simpson would make a better co-pilot with more insightful tips on your trip than Scott Pick's "guidebook". In fact the rental car counter will have more info in their pamphlets than this book.

P.S. yes, I still gave it two stars - at least it has a nice cover photo.

Here we have the, I think, ultimate guidebook to driving British Columbia. Condensing the rich possibilities into a single book is an overwhelming task, but is successfully accomplished here. Some of the drives listed are difficult to get to, especially the ones in Northern BC, but they are exhaustively documented and obviously well researched. I am planning to take many of the drives this year, at least the paved ones. I now have a good idea what to expect. The author takes great pains to mention other side roads that contain hidden wonders that await you, as well as the ones that might be not worthwhile. All in all, this is a very handy guide I have studied cover to cover, and have mined for information about this beautiful destination.

        Book Description

With the aging of Postmodernism, artists and academics are reappraising the aesthetics of Modernism. In this timeless classic, Ruskin offers criticism, appreciation, and instruction for artists at the very beginnings of the Modern movement. Long out-of-print, this edition includes a biographical note about Ruskin and a new introduction by artist Bill Beckley who teaches semiotics at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

                                    Book Description

From nursery rhymes to epic fantasy, from picture books to challenging novels for adolescents, reading is a crucial activity in the cultural and psychological formation of children. In The Oxford Companion to Australian Children's Literature, Stella Lees and Pamela Macintyre examine the legacy and contemporary achievement of Australian children's writers. This encyclopaedic reference work covers the earliest writings from the nineteenth century to the remarkable growth in publishing that followed the Second World War. The Companion encompasses the most notable and influential nursery rhymes, illustrations, picture books, novels and Aboriginal stories. Arranged alphabetically, 1600 entries cover authors, publishers, illustrators, famous characters, events, institutions, and awards - from Ned Kelly and the Eureka Stockade to Australian Comics and the work of Evelyn Goode. Longer, essay-length articles examine the nature and importance of key features of Australian children's literature - annuals, animal stories, the Bush, literary criticism, and fairy tales. `An indispensable work of reference which is also a pleasure to read'. Book Description

The Oxford Companion to Australian Literature, which now appears in a fully revised and updated second edition, provides a concise but comprehensive account of Australian writing from European settlement in 1788 to 1993. Its chief aim is to present the most important achievements of Australian literature in the major fields of poetry, fiction and drama, but considerable attention has also been paid to non-fictional prose and to the impact on Australian literature of those historical events which served not only as catalysts but also as the subject matter of so much of it. William Wilde and Joy Hooton - building on the 1985 edition which was co-authored by the late Barry Andrews - present an even more diverse record of literary achievement. The new Companion reflects three major changes in the literary culture: the emergence of Aboriginal writing, the increase in and recognition of multicultural writing, and the great increase in women's writing in all genres. The new edition also relects the substantial research achievements of literary historians, textual critics, bibliographers, biographers and the impact of critical reinterpretations based on such 'new' approaches as feminism and post-colonialism. Every entry has been reappraised and, where necessary, revised and expanded. During the 1980s several Australian writers won international reputations. Many of them - Malouf, Garner, Murray, Jolley, Carey and Williamson - produced some of their key works after the first edition of the Companion was completed, and their entries have been rewritten accordingly. In addition, a new generation of writers has been included - Brett, Halligan, Henshaw, Castro, Grenville, Masters and Hodgins, to name just a few. Reviewing the first edition, A.D. Hope acclaimed it as a 'landmark'. In the greatly expanded second edition, the authors provide a fuller and more contemporary record of the national literature.

This is a 'must have' guide for those who are either researching particular Australian writers, works of literature, or important themes.

If, for example, you are trying to find out more about bushrangers in Australian Literature, the comprehensive entry that starts on page 137 will define the term, give some history and provide some examples of literature.

Want to know something about 'The Thorn Birds' by Colleen McCullough? Turn to Page 745. Colleen McCullough is herself the subject of an entry on Page 489.

A great starting point for any author, theme or significant work of literature up to the 1990s.

I bought this classic story for my son, based on the previous two reviews. Unfortunately, I will not be giving this book to him. Many of the illustrations are far too scary for a preschool child. I only wish the publisher had provided the opportunity to see inside this book before buying it on blind faith. Let's see...the giant himself has lots of large ugly teeth, a hairy mole-riddled misshapen head, and a permanent scowl on his face (His wife is just as mean and ornery looking.); there are skulls and bones, presumably the leftovers from past "meals," all over his castle (Try explaining what those are to a curious young preschooler!); while nasty looking vultures, rats, bats, and snakes abound. The artwork is indeed very detailed and colorful. However, in my opinion it is not appropriate for the younger age range (age 4) specified in the reading level.

We too checked this book out of the library and then just had to buy it! The book is huge, the pictures and gorgeous and very detailed. The descriptions of just exactly how Jack manages to get that huge bag of gold, golden-egg laying hen, and magical harp out of the castle and to the beanstalk are intriguing. My six year old and two year old both love this book. They sit and read it together and then can usually be found acting out the story in their bedroom. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone! Also would be good for schools because the pictures are so big.

The illustrations are just wonderful and invite to look and look at the pages again. The story is well known, and Jack is very inventive to solve his problems.

                                          Book Description

In 1916, a young man named Michael Collins returned to his native Ireland, after ten years in voluntary exile in London, to join one of the most impassioned and complicated revolutions in history. Playfully nicknamed "The Big Fellow," Collins began to take a key role in the uprisings, eventually becoming a revered revolutionary leader.

Acclaimed writer Frank O'Connor, a man who himself fought in the Irish Civil War, traces Collin's life from the day he returned to Dublin to the day a young Irish soldier shot him dead on a country road.

The Big Fellow achieves a narrative both probing and poetic as it chronicles the life of a man so charismatic that he made people "aware of his presence even when he was not visible, through that uncomfortable magnetism of the very air, a tingling of the nerves."

The controversy caused by this biography led it to be banned by the Irish government for decades. Unique in its contemporary view of this important Irish leader, Frank O'Connor's biography suffers from a rather stilted approach. However, what it lacks in historical accuracy and readability, this account of Collins's life proves an enjoyable read and recounts many enlightening first hand accounts of the man.

I remember reading this book in school in Ireland. Collins was a true patriot, but like most of us he had his faults. The book shows the good and bad at a time in Irish history when life was in some cases very cheap. Collins place in the peace treaty can never be discounted and the controvesy relating to the ambush and death will probably never be fully uncovered. I was and still am touched by his own words when he signed the treaty "today I have signed my own death warrant" a true giant the " Big Fellow ".

This biography was fascinating to me because it was written much closer to the time of the events related than more recent books on Collins, and was written by a man who fought in the Irish Civil War (in which Collins lost his life)and fought on the side opposite Collins. The book is written in a novelistic style that can sometimes be rather offputting, but it is nonetheless an intriguing view of the most charismatic and, probably, most effective Irish leader ever. Certainly it reveals the great regard in which Collins was, and is, held by his countrymen, even those who did not support him after the Treaty which precipitated the civil war(which Ireland seems only now to be putting behind it).Anyone interested in Michael Collins and the tremendous impact he had on his country should read this book.

                                          1 out of 5 stars A fawning portrayal from a fan, not a historian.......1999-04-10

Sadly, Frank O'Connor seems to have been more of an idolizer of Collins than an historian interested in focusing the reader on the important events of his life. One has to wade through multiple tepid apologies for his occasional boorishness, though O'Connor seems to find these stories irresistably cute and keeps going back to him again and again. It may be that the book is best suited to those who have read extensively the other biographers and historians so that this could be understood in context. The Big Fellow is not for the novice Irish history student, because you learn precious little from it and have to work hard to get that.

4 out of 5 stars Passionate account of Collins' life.......1999-02-03

This Collins biography was the first one I ever read. I bought it immediately after viewing Neil Jordan's biopic in 1996 and tore through it cover-to-cover in no time flat. Part of that was from youthful enthusiasm and the rest because O'Connor's writing style is so engaging. O'Connor himself deemed the book a "labour of love" and it is clear from the very first page that he meant it. My paperback edition has a foreword from the author in which he explains his affinity to Collins and his motivations for writing the biography. From there, he divides the text into three parts: Lilliput in London, The Body and the Lash, and The Tragic Dilemma. He covers Collins' youth, though his focus begins during Collins' teen years in London. He discusses the Easter Rising, Collins' jail time, his work at infiltrating the British spy system, Bloody Sunday, Collins' assassination, and, very briefly, the aftermath in Ireland. Throughout the book, O'Connor gives his reader a voyeuristic peek into Collins' life through Collins' own words and Collins' personality traits. This is one of the best Collins biographies at allowing the audience to know Michael the person as opposed to Michael the soldier, Michael the revolutionary, or Michael the politician. Also what sets O'Connor apart is his creative writing background. His words are infused with a kind of passion to which many writers can only aspire. I have to admit the last three paragraphs of the book may have you in tears as I was the first time I read them. If you are new to the life of Collins, this is not a bad selection to begin with and, likewise, if you are already familiar with Collins, this is an excellent book to include in your collection.

Tom Meany was a sports writer & close friend of Babe Ruth. The book opens with an account of Babe's death & of the funeral: the Babe laid in state in the rotunda of old Yankee Stadium. It closes with an account of his last appearance there before he died.

In betw. his discovery in Emmitsburg, MD, by Joe Engel, who noted that when the big teen wasn't pitching or batting, he was pounding a bass drum in the stands. There's Ed Barrow, his manager in Boston, who asked Babe what he thought of pitching every fourth day & playing the outfield in between & who was later named baseball's first general manager by the Yankees. There's the called shot ("The Beau Geste") & Babe's retort when informed that his 1930 salary demand of $80K was more than the President made: "What's he got to do with it? Besides, I had a better year than he did."

Although I bought my copy 45 years ago @some grade school book fair, this is not a children's book. It took repeated readings to understand certain colloquial expressions ("pulled a skull") & to understand that this was not a chronological biography but a series of vignettes. Meany is as vague on the Babe's ancestry as the Babe was.

But it's a literate book with a good deal of insight into the times in which Babe lived: when Babe told a friend that he gone out with "those movie people" (Babe's inability to remember a name was legendary.), the friend found out they were Douglas Fairbanks & Mary Pickford, then "at the zenith of their popularity."

There is a reason that Babe Ruth will remain the greatest baseball player ever, no matter who passes his 714 home runs: he was also a great pitcher, twice winning 20 games in three seasons & holding the original record (later broken by Yankee icon Whitey Ford) for consecutive scoreless innings in World Series play. He started one game a season during his career with the Yankees, & even after he retired, he was proudest of his pitching achievements (he once outdueled Walter Johnson). Yet, he was such a slugger that by 1923, he was the all-time home run leader.
