Book Description
Early Mapping of Southeast Asia follows the story of mapmaking, exploration, and colonization from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries. It surveys Southeast Asia's geography and civilizations, its maps and influence on Western worldviews, and the image of Southeast Asia in the eyes of its neighbors. It also examines the Western image of Southeast Asia from classical times onward.

The expansion of the world, from the other side.......2006-11-24
The idea that we live in an "information economy" is much less of a novelty than the computer geeks and business gurus would have it. For proof, consider "The Early Mapping of Southeast Asia," a history of economics, ideology and adventure masquerading as a gorgeous coffee table book.
The key piece of information was the route to the fabulously (and actually) rich Spice Islands. The story of how Europe evaded the Moslem blockade and reached both India and the undiscovered Americas in the 1490s has been often told. Seldom, however, has the Europe-Southeast Asia story been told from such a comprehensive viewpoint as Thomas Suarez'.
He starts at the very beginning. At a time Christian maps showed a simple T inside an O to divide the three continents, several Southeast Asian societies were drawing their own maps inspired by religious cosmology.
The Thais called these maps of the universe cakkavala, but other peoples had something similar. At the center, instead of Jerusalem, was Mount Sumeru, the link between earth and heaven.
In Europe, Ptolemy speculated that Africa curved around to meet the Asian mainland, which would have made the Indian Ocean into a closed sea like the Mediterranean. As a result, for centuries no one considered traveling around Africa to the Spiceries. (It appears no one considered whether the outside of this mythical barrier might have been worthwhile to reach.)
Ptolemy's barrier had its skeptics, and some correct information was available in Europe, primarily itineraries (like Marco Polo's) rather than maps. But it proved difficult to separate the reliable from the misconceived.
As Suarez shows, Europeans eventually figured out that there were two big peninsulas jutting south from Asia, India and Southeast Asia.
But because of confusion, which only increased when Columbus discovered the Americas, some geographers decided there were three peninsulas. Others moved Asian cities as far as the coast of Peru.
It didn't help that Columbus struck the biggest concentration of islands in the New World. Europeans already knew Southeast Asia was full of islands. So for quite a while, the West Indies were believed to be the East Indies.
Until the Portuguese actually got there around 1500, Europeans were sadly mistaken about even the biggest features of Southeast Asian geography. For centuries, Ceylon and Sumatra were confused, and some mapmakers doubted the existence of Java.
However, once the science-minded Europeans arrived, the situation cleared up dramatically. In about a century the major questions were resolved. During the same period -- 1500 to the late 1600s, printed maps started replacing manuscript charts. (Most old maps and prints that survive today were bound in books or atlases. Loose sheets tended to be destroyed.)
From an early date, some Southeast Asian kings took a sophisticated interest in Western mapping, but many of them held a completely different idea of political boundaries.
In an odd twist, the sovereigns in Thailand, especially, took up modern scientific mapping as a defense against British expansionism through Burma in the 19th century.
The local kings, says Suarez, did not have a concept of definite political borders. Big states exercised decreasing levels of control over more and more distant dependencies, signified by more or less regular payments of tribute, not lines on paper.
If the locals were puzzled by the strange habits of the British, they learned quickly.
Suarez says it was a mistake on the European maps that helped Thailand evade colonial conquest until the Japanese came in 1942. Because longitudes were uncertain, both the British and the French thought Thailand was much narrower, east to west, than it really is. So small, it was not worth conquering.
"Early Mapping of Southeast Asia" is both an eye-popping and an eye-opening book. It has lots of maps, many in color; and lots of curious adventures, surprising discoveries and seldom-heard tales from the eastern side of the east-west divide.
It has a splendid companion, 'The Early Mapping of the Pacific,' which I have also reviewed.
Recommended for students of cartography and Asian history........2000-02-04
Black and white and color maps accompany extensive text references in this survey of early maps of Southeast Asia. While this might prove a very specific guide for Asian collections, cartography and art libraries will also want to consider its value: Suarez provides an excellent history of the region and its geographical importance, examining the history of its representation and exploration.

For show dogs.......2000-06-13
The misleading title suggests that this is a book for anyone who owns a border terrier, but it is primarily aimed at those interested in competitions. It includes an extensive dscription and history of borders which breeders might find useful, but this is not a book for owners of companion dogs.

Excerpt from THE HOBBY HORSE NEWS REVIEW, Aug/Sept. 2000.......2000-09-27
Charlton Press, a noted publishor of collector's guides, uses collector-authors for its guides as Charlton feels this provides important insights needed in a collector's guide. From what I've seen, book height and format are consistent between guides. Each book starts with a blurb about the collectible, such as information on the company or the modeling artists. Item listings come next. These include photo (if available), the item name, number, designer, height, color, issue date, and price. Prices are listed in three currencies: U.S. Dollars, Canadian Dollars, and U.K. pounds. An index is located at the back of the book. Also, included are ads from companies, clubs, and magazines that specialize in the particular collectible.
An important aspect of any collector's value guide is the basis of the valuations. Charlton uses a method based on the actual going price in each quoted region. They gain this data by contacting dealers in the various countries and getting the actual prices the applicable collectibles are going for in that area. This method eliminates the fluctuations of currency exchange rates that would occur if the item was listed, say in U.S. dollars, and than an exchange rate applied to calculate the prices for Canada and the U.K. Now we can move on to specifics.
I already had The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Beswick Animals, first edition, so my main concern was how did the millennium edition compare to the first edition. After all, you can invest in a new collector's guide or use that money for a new collectible, so the guide just better be worth the replacement cost. Five years lie between the first edition (1994) and the millennium or fourth edition (1999). So right, there you have five years of change. (You also have two editions I haven't seen, but I can't tell you about them.) The first edition only had four pages of color photos and all were of the horses. The millennium edition now has sixteen pages of color photos: eight pages dedicated to cats and cows, four pages display horses, and four pages miscellaneous other items. That sounds like the same amount of horse models pictured, but it isn't. The millennium edition presents horse groupings; the first edition only presented a single horse/photo. The photos are different, which brings up the question of whether to let the old edition go or keep it for the color photos.
The introduction is greatly expanded as well. It now has club information, dealer/show listings, and a discussion on how internet pricing may eliminate regional pricing by creating a new universal price. (Good discussion by the way. I recommended it to anyone concerned with values theory.)
The millennium edition maintains the high quality of the first edition, so if you are looking for a replacement, you won't be disappointed.
An overview of Beswick animal production.......2000-05-12
This book presents a catalogue of the animal figures produced by the famous Beswick ceramic factory in Britain prior to being taken over by Royal Doulton. Fully illustrated, it also includes information about some of the artists who designed these attractive models, as well as details about the figures themselves, the dates when they were produced, and a price guide for each piece. A must for the serious collector or antique dealer, and a nice addition to your bookshelf for any animal lover.

A useful guide if you know what you're looking for..........2001-09-17
This is a very well put together and compact book which provides a comprehensive listing of a variety of Beswick pieces and their values. If you know the name of the piece you are trying to find, this book is useful. However, it does not photographically catalogue all pieces, which makes it difficult to look up a piece if you aren't certain what it is.

Book Description
David Weissman and Bill Weber's 2002 documentary, The Cockettes, wowed audiences at the Sundance Film Festival and shined a bright new light on the Cockettes. Now one of the founding members of the legendary troupe takes us inside this flamboyant ensemble of countercultural radicals, who decked themselves out in drag and glitter for a series of legendary midnight musicals at the Palace Theater in the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco. Arriving in San Francisco in 1969 from suburban Detroit, Pam Tent met Hibiscus, a New York actor who had dropped out. One night, in burst of LSD-fueled spontaneity, Sweet Pam took to the stage in a cellophane hula skirt, when Hibiscus and a group of friends commandeered the stage of the Palace during The Nocturnal Dream Shows, a weekly midnight eclectic film series, to perform a chorus line dance to "Honky Tonk Woman." The Cockettes were born! Pam Tent's account recalls the heyday of the rebellious, gender-bending troupe, the inevitable infighting that accompanied fame, and finally how a Rex Reed column raving about the Cockettes led to a disastrous New York opening where the audience-which included John Lennon, Gore Vidal, Angela Lansbury and Anthony Perkins-walked out in droves. The Cockettes gave their last performance in the autumn of 1972. But despite their short life, the Cockettes' unique burst of cultural experimentation and artistic outrageousness continues to influence the worlds of theater, music, fashion, gay politics, gay spirituality, and urban club life.
After leaving the Cockettes,
Pam Tent moved to New York City for a brief stint as a blues singer. Then it was back to the West Coast for a new career in film distribution and finally her current livelihood as an accountant. She still lives in the Bay Area, sharing her house with a small menagerie of animals.
Customer Reviews:
Spirit of the times.......2006-11-10
Pam Tent accurately captures the spirit and craziness of the Haight/Ashbury and of San Francisco during the Summer of Love. Her book is full of details and insights from one who lived the life to its fullest. It is an amazing story proving that you can be as "far-out" as you wish and survive to tell the tale.
Most Wonderful.......2005-01-06
This book is worth a read for the outfit descriptions alone. This book made me want to invest in gallons of glitter. Fascinating: these folks depended and thrived on a system of families and communes rather than a "straight" lifestyle of jobs and paychecks. Not only did they thrive, but they created a troupe of performers whose antics I wish I had been around to experience. The Cockettes lived their art, which seems like a rarity in these icky conservative times.
The Cockettes - A MUST for expirimental theater enthusiasts.......2005-01-05
This important seminal era of avante garde theater and queer history circa 1968-74 was almost lost to posterity due to the AIDS deaths of so many of its' important voices. Thank Goddess it has been lovingly and meticulously posited in history/herstory in a tangible way in this book by one of the Cockettes best suited for the calling - Sweet Pam. Her tone IS sweet, but hardly naive. The author deftly weaves the significance of this cultural watershed throughout her priceless juicy gossipy gutter level dish. For those of us who were too young to be in SF then and who want to know more, the book provides a detailed chronological survey of the evolution of the Cockettes. The book serves as the perfect step child to the great documentary film about the Cockettes that came out a couple of years ago.
Share the Excitement of a Culturally Important Era.......2004-12-21
Pam Tent's voice in her writing of this unusual and culturally important story is much more clear, incisive and organized than the subject she is dealing with. Her letters home provided the basis for a period that many of us, because of the indulgences of the time, have forgotten. It's so interesting to relive it (or see it for the first time) through her eyes. She's such a good story teller and was right in the middle of the whole thing. We are lucky she is still around to tell it-many others have died. I'm sure you'll enjoy "Midnight at the Palace" and will recommend it to anyone interested in the late 60s/early 70s and how that brief cultural explosion affects us today.

Book Description
The Taste of Dreams is both a quest for the romantic Russia of the author’s dreams, and a tale of amazement as she discovers and gets caught up in the new, anarchic Russia emerging from its Soviet constraints. At its heart is the story of caviar—beluga, the rarest type of sturgeon, harvested from the Caspian Sea. It is now an endangered species, and no one knows how to—or wants to—stop the plunder. Intelligent, funny, and enormously engaging, this is a modern tour through the intricacies of the new Russia. Vanora Bennett writes for The Times of London and is a former Moscow correspondent for Reuters and the Los Angeles Times. She is the author of Crying Wolf: The Return of War to Chechnya.
