An international reference to all aspects of water gardening. Part One, written by expert Peter Robinson, is based on work originally undertaken by the late Frances Perry and provides specific information on designing and building a water feature. It includes an illustrated encyclopedia of submerged, floating, and marginal plants. Part Two is an encyclopedia of water lilies and lotuses by American specialist-and photographer-Perry Slocum.
Customer Reviews:
A Very Informative Book.......2000-04-08
For all those interested in growing a beautiful water garden, or scientifically studying water flowers and other plants, this is the book for you. You don't need to look any further. A series of lovely pictures are also included, but the cover has the most beauteous photograph.
Water Gardening : Water Lilies and Lotuses.......2000-02-10
A very good book for those interested in water gardening. Has an excellent supply of pictures, names, and information of hundreds of water gardening plants. The Book has 2 sections of color photos and all are very nice. The book did a great job informing me about plants I never new existed. The book also includes information on filters, ponds (design and placement), diseases (pond, plants, and fish), and numerous other issues. A very good book and I would recommend it to any water gardener, novice, pro, advanced, or expert.
Book Description
In this fully updated work, Perry Slocum describes nearly 500 species and cultivars of the crowning jewels of water gardens, the waterlilies and lotuses. This book includes more than 130 of the best new hybrids introduced since the landmark Water Gardening: Water Lilies and Lotuses by Perry Slocum and Peter Robinson was published. All species and the major cultivars, including day- and night-blooming tropical and hardy waterlilies and lotuses, are described along with the author's and hybridizers' comments on the best landscape uses for each plant. Although the genera Nymphaea and Nelumbo receive special emphasis, a chapter is also devoted to the other genera in the waterlily family, Nuphar, Victoria, Euryale, Barclaya, and Ondinea. In addition to his achievements as a hybridizer, Slocum is an award-winning nature photographer. Waterlilies and Lotuses is illustrated with 350 stunning color photographs of these exotic beauties, with more than 100 photos published here for the first time. With information on hardiness, including maps for Europe and the United States, and an extensive list of suppliers of water gardening plants and equipment in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, Waterlilies and Lotuses is a truly definitive resource for water gardeners the world over.
Customer Reviews:
not all inclusive.......2007-08-01
I was disappointed with this book as it did not include most of the hardy waterliles I've recently purchased (eg. Chromatella, Helvola). Perhaps I need to purchase the first Slocum book for this information?? They may be included under a different name, but if so, this does make this reference less useful as the common trade names are the key words most of us will be using to find information.
Great book with great pictures........2006-10-23
I just bought this latest edition of Waterlilies and Lotuses after owning the last one for a few years and I was glad to see photos and information on many new varieties.
Some of the new listings, with photos, include Foxfire, King of Siam, Carla's Sonshine, Islamorada, Innocence, Miami Rose and many others.
A lot of great species lilies are also listed, with photos, such as the Victoria lilies, the Australian Gigantea lilies, Eurayle Ferox and others.
All descriptions of the lilies include information such as flower size, shape and fragrance and leaf sizes colors and spread. Also included on most lilies is the date of introduction, the person who hybridized them and the parent plants of the hybrids when known.
The authors also give recommendations as to what size pond or tub is best suited for a particular lily.
I like this book and think it can be helpful for persons deciding which plants to purchase for their pond.
A good addition to his first book on water lilies.......2005-09-20
There is a lot of information on the newer lilies, but I was disappointed there weren't more pictures of the lilies.

Equal parts memoir, how-to and social satire,
Mistress Ruby Ties it Together is a guided tour through New York's S underworld, where the author worked as a professional dominatrix to subsidize her writing career. As Mistress Ruby, this former Catholic school girl took confessions from some of the country's most powerful men. Within the sanctity of the dungeon, they revealed to her their darkest lusts, fears and frailties -- as well as their sincere desire to connect with the opposite sex. Each of these provocative essays provides an insider's view of human deviation; together, they present a startling portrait of our everyday selves.
Mistress Ruby is a striking, candid, and humorous look behind the dungeon doors to a darker -- and often unexplored -- side of human nature.

Equal parts memoir, how-to and social satire, Mistress Ruby Ties it Together is a guided tour through New York's S&M underworld, where the author worked as a professional dominatrix to subsidize her writing career. As Mistress Ruby, this former Catholic school girl took confessions from some of the country's most powerful men. Within the sanctity of the dungeon, they revealed to her their darkest lusts, fears and frailties -- as well as their sincere desire to connect with the opposite sex. These essays, which originally appeared as the NYPress column Mistress Ruby's Whipping Post from 1996-98, provide an insider's view of human deviation; together they present a shockingly accurate portrait of our everyday selves.
Customer Reviews:
No Need Waste Your Time with this USELESS PEICE OF DRIVEL.........2005-08-16
If you're looking for information on the business of S&M, KEEP LOOKING! This author is the Queen of making a VERY short story extremely LONG. The fact that she was a part time dominatrix is simply a side note in this set of useless "essays". But, if you have time on your hands and no sharp objects to poke in your eyes, then do the next best thing by reading this book.
I'll tell you all about it: In the introduction, she drones on about how she became a dominatrix to do research for writing. In the first chapter, she drones on, once again, but this time it's about how she did it for the money because she hates "regular" jobs. She wasn't even a GOOD dominatrix because she lived in a condemned apartment with a mentally ill woman throughout her illustrious 2 year career. Oh, and don't forget that one of her clients dominated her by promising her $1700 and only giving her $240. What a nice tirade that was to read. I thought she was a dominatrix, not a submissive-for-hire.
She tells nothing about the dungeon, other dominatrix, and very little about any of her clients, much less give you any useful information (other than details about her own self centered life.) She even displays her poor work ethics, stupidity, and selfishness by mentioning that she left the job by walking out on a nice regular client, and leaving hundreds of dollars worth of dominatrix wear and tools behind, just because it was suddenly "time" to go. Wow, and you even get to read a whole chapter's worth of her relentless complaining about her female problems! Yay!
Anyway, it's supposed to be a collection of essays... Since I've never read an essay that resembles this unorganized rambling, it would be better described as a bunch of diary entries in which she goes on and on with endless irrelevant tangents. Imagine reading two pages in which she bitches about a customer fantasizing about the author's grandmother. Um, Hello! Why would you tell clients about your family when you're a dominatrix!
I kept reading because I hoped it would get better. What's most surprising to me is that I wasted good money on this piece of crap that some stupid publisher actually backed. Maybe I should write a book. Mine would definitely be better than this. Maybe I could be like the uneducated slacker author and only have to work one day a week writing a column. Lol Next time I hear that this author has written a book, I think I'll just poke sharp objects in my eyes!
Exquisitely funny portrayal of professional domination.......2003-06-17
This book is essentially a memoir of the author's stint as a professional dominatrix in Manhattan. It is, at turns, humorous, strange, entertaining. "Mistress Ruby" started out as a journalist doing research on professional domination, and then later became involved in the scene herself. The book is interesting because it deals with many aspects of the lives of the women who practice professional domination -- practical and otherwise -- and from that perspective is somewhat voyeuristic.
Where the book fails, in my opinion, is in its lack of insight into the "BDSM" mindset. The author is not a dominant person and is not attracted herself to BDSM -- she does it initially out of curiosity and then, later, for money, but never because she likes it. This is probably the case for most, if not all, professional dominatrices, and that is fine. However, the author displays no insight into the mindset of the people she is dominating ... those are the folks who are into it, and she seems to be puzzled by them at best, freaked out by them at worst, but never really insightful as to what is going on with them. From that perspective, the book is pretty disappointing, because while it is a funny memoir it doesn't shed a lot of light on what attracts people to BDSM, which is quite interesting given the author's involvement with the BDSM scene.
It's like being a fly on the wall!.......2003-03-06
She has such a terrific attitude, and only shares the truly odd experiences- odd from her perspective is a bit more than the average LOL. It is a fascinating read. Also includes a great list of websites at the end. (...)
Funny and entertaining but somewhat disappointing.......2002-04-01
Robin Shamburg (f/k/a "Mistress Ruby") presents this book based on the essays she wrote for New York Press while she was a professional dominatrix in New York City in the mid-90s. Ms. Shamburg's writing style is witty, and she has a talent for bringing to light humorous anecdotes that shed some light on this otherwise mysterious line of work. The book is an easy and enjoyable read.
The book could have been better had Ms. Shamburg spent more time describing her feelings to the reader -- ie, what did it feel like to do the things that she did to her clients during her time in the dungeon? One gets the impression that it was largely a job for Ms. Shamburg, but it would have been a much more riveting book had the reader been allowed to understand what Ms. Shamburg really felt like when she was brandishing the whip over a client.
One final word -- this is not a book for those who are really into the BDSM lifestyle. Ms. Shamburg was a professional dominatrix for two years, but is not a lifestyle BDSM enthusiast or a natural S&M player -- for her, it was an interesting interlude in her life, and that is the vein in which this book must be read. Those who are interested in exploring the mind of a truly dominant personality -- a lifestyle Domme -- should look elsewhere. Having said that, this book does offer insights into the lifestyle of most of the professional Mistresses out there, who are neither lifestyle BDSMers or natural Dommes, but rather regular folks who have a somewhat unique line of work -- and for that reason, it is worthwhile reading.
If only there were more stars . . ........2001-12-29
. . . I would give her all of them. This is a great read. I'm guessing that the very few people that don't like this book must be too slow for it's razor wit or stumped by all the multisyllabic words. Or perhaps they were looking for mindless smut and were disappointed to find a the memoirs of a dom that sees the humor in human sexual behavior. Ms. Shamburg could always dumb down her next book to appeal to the lowest common denominator, but I'm sure she'll just write another masterpiece and keep the rest of us entertained!
Book Description
Over the past two decades, in the United States alone, an estimate twenty million people have joined cults. Today, three to five thousand cults are working to recruit new members. At any point in time, two-and-a-half to three million Americans are active cult members. Often a cult is disguised as a legitimate business or organization: a restaurant, self-help group, psychotherapy clinic, or leadership training program could be a front for a cult. Anyone--no matter what age or income level--could be susceptible to the covert and seductive nature of a cult. The country's leading authority on cults, Margaret Thaler Singer, calls on her nearly fifty years of expertise to write the definitive book on cults. Written with author and former cult member Janja Lalich, Singer's first book is a shocking expose that reveals what cults are and how they work. Cults in Our Midst offers vital information on how to help people escape cult entrapments and recover from the experience.Cults in Our Midst is filled with practical strategies and suggestions for understanding the cult phenomenon and helping cult members break free.
Customer Reviews:
Important Read.......2007-08-08
I read this book while romantically involved with someone who I thought to be in a cult. This book helped me understand what I was dealing with and made me feel reassured that my suspicions were not unfounded.
Anyone who debunks the theory of mind control or brainwashing must also be blind to the brainwashing that happens every day in our own society and I would question their motives. Look at advertising! There is no doubt that these things happen all the time.
By the same token, it's probably not a good idea to jump to conclusions about people or groups without educating yourself, which is where this book comes in. This book is informative and helpful. Read this first, then read Steven Hasaan's books if you need more.
Namaste
A must read.......2007-06-03
This book is a real eye-opener to the prevalence of cults in our society. While ou tendency is to think in terms of Scientology, Jim Jones, the Branch Davidians. It is frightening to find out how many small,mind-bending groups are peppered across the country.
Beware of the people who have all the answers or can explain away life's problems by prescribing adherence to their particular ideals and who refuse to allow their members to interact with people outside the "group."
It doesn't happen to someone else. It could be your son, daughter, mother or father.
The Nature and Danger of Cults.......2007-04-09
Hugh Rosen, D.S.W., author of Silent Battlefields: A Novel (Philadelphia, PA, U.S.A.)
Dr. Singer's work on cults exposes the threat they pose to individuals and society. It is a comprehensive and scholarly, albeit clearly written work that is well illustrated with many vingettes. Her expertise on the subject illuminates every page. Specific cults, such as the Moonies (AKA the Unification Church), the Hare Krishna group, and the cult ending in the Jonestown debacle. The author makes evident her view that what happened at Jonestown was not mass suicide so much as it was outright murder. In a postscript to this revised edition (2003) she also discusses contemporary terrorist groups and cites both distinctions and overlaps between them and cults.
The book exposes the coercion, intimidation, indoctrination, humilation and thought reform methods of cults. It is important to bear in mind that one of the distinguishing characteristics of cults is that they exist to enhance the wealth and power of the leader rather than the welfare and personal development of its members. Methods of recruitment and the requirement to break off relationships with outsiders (i.e. family and friends)are thoroughly discussed. Recruits are mislead and deceived regarding what they are getting into.
Dr. Singer introduces the ways in which some members eventually extricate themselves (or are helped to do so) from cults and goes into a critique of the socio-psychological damage that has been inflicted upon them. As the book nears an end, it offers and in-depth treatment of "exit counseling" which is usually needed to rehabilitate the ex-member so that he or she can become a productive, independant member of mainstream society. This requires a psychoeducational method by an expert, as well as the support of family and former friends. It also involves helping the "escapee" to overcome the dependency and guilt that is often experienced even after leaving the cult.
I believe that "Cults in our Midsts" will be the definitive work on the subject for many years to come.
Hugh Rosen, D.S.W.
Beware cult apologists.......2006-08-25
A word of warning against cult apologists - see the review by Lucille M. Cozzolino. Her suggested reading by James Lewis and Gordon Melton is nothing more than pushing the view of cult apologists.
They insist there is no such thing as brainwashing, mind control or whatever you wish to call it.
Melton, by the way, after the Aum Shinrikyo sarin gas attacks in Japan, was flown to Japan by the cult and once there he declared that the group could not have produced the Sarin poison gas. WRONG. They did.
For good insight into cults, try the Rick Ross website at http://www.rickross.com/ There is plenty of information on different groups, and much can also be learnt from the message boards.
It is interesting to note that the reviewer Lucille M. Cozzolino has published only one review. It is a pattern that was commonly seen when Jon Atack released A Piece of Blue Sky: Scientology, Dianetics and L. Ron Hubbard Exposed.
Don't be fooled, there are cults out there and they can be dangerous. Self-help seminars, so-called 'human potential' organisations, are also potentially dangerous and should be thoroughly investigated before one commits to a course with one of them.
Many of them employ mind control methods similar to those used by cults and the effects can be devastating. Again, for information on this, the Rick Ross website is excellent.
I speak from experience.
Satisfies My General Curiosity about Cults.......2006-08-03
This book was exactly what I was looking for - an authoritative overview on cults written for the general reader. Dr. Singer provided the authoritative voice. She has counseled and interviewed thousands of former cult members and their families and done extensive research into cults, their behavior, their methods of operations, and their effects on individuals and societies. "Cults..." presents much information about cults in very organized and understandable manner.
The book is divided into three parts. In the first part Dr. Singer explores what cults are. She presents a definition, a history, an overview of how they work, and the troubling aspects of cults. In the second part she presents how cults work, including chapters on their recruiting practices, their persuasion techniques, and their use of intimidation. In the final section she provides information on helping survivors escape and recover.
It is this third section on escape and recovery that makes this book a resource for friends and families of present and previous cult members. She overviews the process for extracting a member from a cult and provides information regarding the psychological needs of former cult members. The author also provides several sections at the end of the book listing resources for escape and recovery.
"Cults in Our Midst" is now more than ten years-old. I would like to read a more up-to-date book on the current threat from cults. Before reading this book I was tangentially aware of the damage cults were doing to individuals and their families. However I was unaware of the insidious threat against society in general. This insidiousness arises from some cults' often successful use of intimidation to silence critics, media coverage, and academic inquiry.
Book Description
In 1936 anthropologist Tom Harrison, poet and journalist Charles Madge and documentary filmmaker Humphrey Jennings set up the Mass Observation Project. The idea was simple: ordinary people would record, in diary form, the events of their everyday lives. An estimated one million pages eventually found their way to the archive, and it soon became clear that this was more than anyone could digest. Today, the diaries are stored at the University of Sussex, where remarkably most remain unread. In Our Hidden Lives, Simon Garfield has skilfully woven a tapestry of diary entries in the rarely discussed but pivotal period of 1945 to 1948. The result is a moving, intriguing, funny, at times heartbreaking book.
Customer Reviews:
Disturbing.......2006-09-25
This book is a selection of entries from a number of diaries kept by the Mass Observationists during the 1940s. Entries were selected to give a spread of perspectives from all contributors, and in large measure it has been successful in this. Unfortunately, it contains a disproportionately large number of grossly anti-Semitic statements, which are inflammatory and highly offensive. Everyone I know who has seen this book agrees that the offending statements do nothing to enhance the value of the book as a historical document. Had the diaries contained the same number of pornographic, rather than anti-Semitic, statements, I wonder if the editor and publisher would have been so ready to include them. However, complaints to the publishers, to the newspaper reviewer who praised the writers, and to the press, brought no response of any kind, despite the number of people who signed up to object. This lack of response by all involved is deeply disturbing.
For this reason I cannot recommend this book.
A striking and important book........2005-07-01
This book is based on a mass observation, sociological study carried out in England immediately after WW2. It focuses on the dairy entries of 5 random individuals, 2 women and 3 men, all from different backgrounds, walks of life, parts of Country and age groups. The entries offer a fascinating insight into the life and times of Post War England, an often overlooked period in history which saw continued poverty and austerity, political disillusionment and the beginnings of radical social changes and beliefs that the war had begun and which gathered momemtum at this time, forming the foundations of the modern UK.
Real, engaging, utterly fascinating and compelling. You love and sometimes loath the participants, B.Charles is quite a hostile, fascist and snobbish antiques dealer. My personal favourite was Maggie Joy Blunt, a modern single girl trying to make her way in the world as a writer. Really fasicinating social history.

Business Club Winner (weiner).......2004-10-29
My college business club has long had the practice of selecting one book as the "must read" book of the semester to develop our skill set and promote our careers. We all look for books (besides the national best sellers everyone has read) to share with the group. One of our members stumbled onto 20/20 Insight and brought it to the rest of us, not because it was a candidate, but because it was so bad. I borrowed his copy to see if it was as bad as he made it out to be. I tried to read it, but it was too bad. It only got worse as I went. I tried to skim it just to get through it, but it is so poorly done and makes no point that I had to quit and get back to my studies. It has earned a spot on a newly created shelf in our library as the first initiation into our "holy crap someone published this!" shelf. I don't know where these five star, generic reviews came from, but they either didn't read the book, are trying to sell their copy, or are related to the sucker who wrote it.
Must be the dumbest colleciton of blah ever printed........2004-10-16
I could not believe that this book oculd get worse as it went on. I admit, towards the end, with less than 1/5 to go, I quit. It was hopeless. There is nothing redeeming about this book. This is a true waste of paper. I feel for the tree that gave its life for this wasted effort for everyone involved.
Horrible - not worth the paper it's printed on.......2004-07-01
Don't waste your time on this book and don't waste any more of your time considering purchasing this book. I've never read a book which is so confusing and pointless. 20/20 Insight is the wrong title - they should call it "Read this book and you won't be able to see a thing" or "Turn off the lights and begin to not understand anything about business." This guy must be blind when it comes to the world of consulting. I've never been so confused after reading a book. I kept reading hoping things would get better, but I just become more and more confused. His examples are silly and don't really apply. Again, don't read this book!!!!!
20/20 Insight.......2001-08-06
I found this book to be excellent!! Anyone that wants to transform their life, finances and business should read this book. Randy Gibbs puts everything into perspective and very manageable so that anyone can make the proper changes. I highly recommend this book to anyone!!
One of the MUST READ Books of the year!!.......1999-04-01
Randys insights into making lasting changes are among the best I have ever read or tried. He delivers real everyday "How To's" and it's obvious that he teaches what he has done himself. This is one of the best books I have read and used.

Book Description
This chronicle of human development offers hope for those who want to better understand themselves and choose their own life path. By combining the best of several schools of thought and sensibly evaluating the balance of nature and nurture, this book helps individuals to understand who they are, where they come from, and where they can choose to go. There are discussions on what elements of a personality are most likely genetically influenced, how choices are shaped by families, and what actions can truly be chosen by an individual. Progressing chronologically from birth, this book offers insights for those who are trying to understand themselves better or trying to change the way they interact with the world around them.
