    5 out of 5 stars Pamplona revealed.......2007-09-25

I truely enjoyed this book. Someday I will get there and also live the legend of this city that Ernest made popular- though it was doing just fine without him.

Good writing takes you to a place you have not been before and Ray Mouton does it with this book.

5 out of 5 stars The best book ever written about Sanfermines.......2007-09-25

The best book ever written about Sanfermines, the festival of San Fermin known to many as the running of the bulls. This truly is a guide to Fiesta. No other work published will better educate and prepare you for this event. A well written must for all who plan on attending and immersing themselves in the spirit of Fiesta.

Held each year in Pamplona, Spain in July, Sanfermines is much more than the daily spectacle of the encierros or "the running of the bulls" early each morning and much more than the corrida de toros in the Plaza de Toros late each afternoon. The fiesta is a celebration of family and life in Navarra.

Fiesta belongs to the Navarrans, and has for centuries; however the gracious citizens of Iruña (Basque for Pamplona) have opened their arms to the people of the world, inviting all to participate in what has often been described as one of the most exhilarating experiences on planet earth.

Of course you should read Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises", however if you buy only one book before heading to Sanfermines, it should be Ray Mouton's "Pamplona: Running the Bulls, Bars and Barrios in Fiesta de San Fermin."

    5 out of 5 stars Don't go without it!!!.......2007-08-22

The best book I have ever read on San Fermin!!!!! It captures the very heart and soul of fiesta-the Alegria. If you have already been-it will make you ache to go back again and again! If you haven't been-read this first and you will enjoy it much more. I went in 2005, thinking it would be a once in a lifetime event-and after reading this I booked a hotel for next summer, and may not ever miss another year!! Viva San Fermin! Read this book. As Michener said himself "This book is the next best thing to going to Fiesta itself".

5 out of 5 stars The Benchmark Has Been Set.......2003-01-10

"A Day in the Life of Fiesta" is another way to think of Mouton's account of the sometimes-overwhelming sensory experience of the Fiesta of San Fermin, a.k.a. the Running of the Bulls. The author's descriptive and literary talents allow one to vicariously experience both a day and the entire week of the infamous fiesta. It is perhaps cliché to say that Mouton has hit a home run or a bull's-eye with this book, but it is also highly accurate. I've attended fiesta many times over the past two decades and can confidently say that Mouton has brought this world-renowned fiesta to life with words - and as any veteran fiesta-goer will tell you, this is no easy accomplishment.

In reading this book you will come as close as possible to feeling the immense energy of fiesta, of smelling, tasting, dancing, hearing and rejoicing in the fiesta experience without actually being there. For veterans it will spark fiesta flashbacks and a longing to return. For potential fiesta goers it may just provide enough of a description to catalyze you into finally buying that plane ticket.

I first attended fiesta upon graduating college and those first few years were a blur of collegiate-style binging and revelry. Luckily I could remember enough about each year that I kept coming back. I had been infected with the fiesta spirit. In hindsight my only wish is that I had had a book like this one to read back then. What has taken so many years to learn and appreciate about the joys and beauty of fiesta would have been learned much faster with this account of and guide to the fiesta experience.

Most people who have attended fiesta will usually avoid trying to explain the experience to the potential traveler and will respond with "Just go and see for yourself. You will love it." At last there is an excellent piece of writing to do justice to the "what is it like?" question. Mouton's literary accomplishment is highly commendable. The benchmark has been set. Veteran fiesta goers will have many "ah-ha" moments as they read and potential newcomers now have a starting platform from which they can maximize their first fiesta experience.

5 out of 5 stars Pamplona: Hemingway would be proud of this book!!!.......2003-01-05

There are many stories about Pamplona,
some true, some not. Most are inaccurate.
Mouton has found a way to report the History
with the Present that makes it both valuable
to historians as well as first timers.

If you are a first timer - get this book so that you
are prepared. If you go there often, get it as
well. This way you won't have to struggle to
remember everything - which is hard to do because
it seems like one big wonderful dream.

One could argue that Pamplona is better than anything
Hemingway wrote, since it incorporates the history
    with the present day scene.

Lastly, Mouton is an experienced runner and has helpful
tips on how to run. Running gives you an experience
    that Hemingway never had.

    Enjoy.

2 out of 5 stars Lacking too much needed info, flaws on what is present!.......2001-10-13

The book is too old for starters. And to make matters worse the information present isn't the best. I've been keeping anoles for roughly 14 years and I've written plenty of care guides myself.

His section on lighting is poor, especially how he tells you to setup the lamps on the enclosure. The lights should NEVER span the entire cage. Hasn't this guy ever heard of gradients and basking spots?

He also promotes usage of bad substrates and items that are harmful, such as heat rocks and pet store reptile vitamins. He also forgets to mention which UVB lights and best and what types of lights are unimportant.

As for his feeding section, he makes a few good points. But he takes the wrong path of telling people to stick to single insects if they choose to. You should always vary the diet with different insects. And in most cases, avoid hard meal worms and lipid filled wax worms! He also mentions that wax worm moths are a treat, but doesn't have the courtesy to tell people that meal worm beetles are bad.

The information on describing anoles is also outdated; they're no longer members of Iguanidae.

The only portion of his book that was even remotely beneficial was his Health section; in informing you of health problems anyway. How he discussed treating mouth rot is severely lacking and erroneous.

I do not recommend this book, other than to get you started and interested. As for what books I do recommend, not many. Phillipe De Vosjoli's book is probably your best bet. But I'd stick to online references such as the Anolis contact group or anoles.com and kingsnake.com forum headers.

I thought this was a great and ilistrative book. it answers several questions ranging from where i can find and catch these little creatures, to breeding and caring for there eggs.

Next time that i go to the pet shop that i seen it at i will actualy buy it instead of reading it there in the shop. :)

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......1999-06-16

This book answered all my questions about my new pets, along with giving me lots of information I hadn't thought about. The book was easy to follow--even for someone who knows nothing about reptiles. Also, it wasn't so dumbed-down that it was too elementary. This is a good book for any anole owner. The pictures are great, too.

                  Book Description

This volume in the series contains first and second century documents in Aramaic and Greek said to come from Nahal Se'elim and now generally held to be from Nahal Hever (the provenance of the Babatha Archive and the Bar Kokhba documents). The transitional stage of the Aramaic language is documented here for the first time. The Greek language and script closely resembles that of the Greek papyri from Egypt. The legal documents in the archive of Salome Komaise daughter of Levi from Mahoza (a village in the Roman province of Arabia) and similar documents from Judaea published here, like those of the Babatha archive, constitute the best and most authentic evidence for certain legal and social aspects of the life of Jews at the time. The evidence of assimilation of non-hellenized Jews to their environment contrasts with and complements that contained in contemporary and later rabbinic sources.

                  Book Description

The present volume contains a selection of studies on the Aramaic texts from Qumran, originally published in Spanish but thoroughly revised here, which investigate the contributions made by the Qumran manuscripts to the study of the Apocalyptic Tradition. The first three papers collected here are concerned with apocalyptic texts belonging to the Enochic Tradition (Book of Noah, Books of Enoch, Book of Giants) and show how the fragmentary copies found at Qumran have radically altered the way in which we understand them. The next two studies deal with two texts which were previously unknown and which stem from the Danielic Tradition (4QPrNab, 4QpsDan Ar); they both notably enrich our knowledge of the traditions of Daniel. The last two studies discuss two Qumranic apocalypses (4Q246, 11QNJ) which reveal the richness and the diversity of the theological conceptions circulating within the Apocalyptic Tradition. The book offers a most up-to-date survey of research on these manuscripts and makes a fresh contribution to the understanding of Qumran and of the Apocalyptic Tradition.

Although I've studied the DSS for some years now (25 years) I do have problem's with the publisher's and writer's who go into "a little more detail" on the subject that I already know and studied. To charge such very high prices for the hardcover as well as the paperback versions of these books purely for greed making it very hard for frist time student's to purchase these books for themselve's. I've had alot of mail from them asking "why????". I only can tell them that the writer, publishers are only interested in filling their "pockets" with alot money on a subject that should be available to them and also the public for a reasonable price. Shame on them for keeping these "must read" documents out of their reach for greed. M.A. BREGAN- Professor of theology.

5 out of 5 stars Soothing and nostalgic.......2001-01-30

Hawai'i One Summer is a slim collection of luminous essays reflecting diversal topics ranging from surfing to house chores. Indeed, this is the least read book by Hong-Kingston. Her prose is clear and evocative. It is very different from the radical Woman Warrior. It evokes a zen quality, like sipping a soulful cup of ginseng tea.

                  5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful.......1999-11-29

HAWAI'I ONE SUMMER is probably Kingston's least-read work, but I think it's the piece which captures this writer's clear and graceful prose style the best. Her essays range from surfing to dishwashing. Who'd ever guess that someone could write a substantial essay on a mundane activity like dishwashing? Well, Maxine Hong Kingston achieved this task. HAWAI'I ONE SUMMER would probably be good to use in an expository writing course.

5 out of 5 stars Kingston knows local lit scene in Hawai'i, and cosmos too........1999-05-21

A memoir of Maxine Hong Kingston's memorable years in Hawai'i, when she went from Viet Nam protests and virtual street existence to pedagogies and mythologies of empowerment that took on national and global impact. This, I find, an insightful, wry, even caustic book on the local literature movements in Hawai'i, always fresh and insightful even when New Yorkerish.

Poverty breeds injustice. That injustice is all the more terrible, Evelyn Doyle writes in this affecting memoir, when it is visited on children--in this instance, she and her five siblings, who became a cause célèbre in Ireland half a century ago.

The year is 1953. After his wife leaves him for another man, young Evelyn's father puts his six children in church-operated industrial schools while he journeys across the water to England to find work. When he returns a few months later, he finds that the law now considers his children to be permanent wards of the state. The nuns who have taken charge of Evelyn's fate are far from awful, and, we learn, Evelyn's father is less than a saint. Still, family is family, and, in the face of considerable odds, he labors tirelessly for his children's return. As the battle spills from one courtroom to another, the Doyle family earns the sympathies of neighbors and strangers alike, and even a few cheers from the good sisters.

The basis for the independent film Evelyn, Doyle's memoir remains full of tension and uncertainty to the very end, offering both a memorable portrait of hard times and a fine tribute to the power of familial devotion. --Gregory McNamee

                  Book Description

In the slums of Dublin in 1953, Evelyn Doyle's mother ran off with a lover, abandoning her family and leaving Evelyn's father to care for six children. Already struggling to support his children as a painter and decorator, Desmond Doyle faced the fact that he would have to turn them over to church-run industrial schools while he went to England, where he could earn higher wages and save money to support them without state assistance. He believed the placement was temporary. However, upon his return to Dublin several months later, he discovered that the Irish state had assumed custody of the children and refused to release them. Tea and Green Ribbons is the astonishing, heart-wrenching tale of Desmond's dramatic quest to get his children back, told in gripping fashion by his daughter, Evelyn.

In the ensuing years after losing his children, Desmond devoted himself to working with some of Ireland's foremost legal experts to fight both the Church and the government. Meanwhile Evelyn, his eldest child, discovered the crisp, clean joys and lonely sorrows of life in the care of nuns. After two years the Irish Supreme Court finally made an unprecedented decision -- which, for the first time in Irish legal history, took into account the children's wishes -- and Desmond, his daughter, and his sons began their lives again.

Evelyn Doyle has crafted a jewel-like chronicle of a major turning point in Irish mores and culture. Uplifting, gritty, and emotionally compelling, this stunning memoir is an unforgettable celebration of the Irish spirit.

4 out of 5 stars Child Custody Battle.......2006-02-12

"Tea and Green Ribbons is the astonishing tale of a father's quest to reunite his family. In 1953 Evelyn Doyle's mother ran off with another man, leaving her husband in Dublin to care for their six small children. A local housepainter, Desmond Doyle has little money and no choice but to turn his kids over to Ireland's church-run industrial schools while he looks for work in England. But upon his return several months later, Desmond is unable to retrieve them from state custody.
Evelyn Doyle is only seven when she arrives at the convent in High Park, where she will bask in the clean joys and lonely sorrows of life in the care of nuns. She will make friends, say her prayers, and watch time pass as Desmond tries, and fails, to engage Ireland's foremost legal experts in a fight against the Church and the government. It will be two years before Evelyn's release is granted by the Irish Supreme Court -- the first time in Irish legal history in which the justices take a child's wishes into consideration when reaching their decision.
Tragic in its truths yet inspiring at every turn, Tea and Green Ribbons is a triumphant ode to the human spirit and a loving testament to the Irish experience." (summary from publisher's website)

                  2 out of 5 stars Poorly written.......2004-02-11

While the story that gave rise to this book is undoubtedly moving and probably gripping, "Tea and green ribbons" is so poorly written as to have no literary merit at all. A memoir, besides telling an interesting tale, has to be well-written - otherwise, an interview in a magazine will do for me, thanks. The whole book reads like this: "Daddy said hello. I felt so happy. Daddy picked me up in his arms. I laughed. Then Daddy said he had to go. I cried".

I was also disappointed that Ms. Doyle tells us virtually nothing about the lives of her brothers during her convent years. She tells a lot about her father, but her brothers, their feelings and ordeals, are almost completely passed over, and even after the end of the judicial proceedings (and the book) they are barely mentioned. The father's struggle seems much more concerned with Evelyn than with her remaining five siblings, and we wonder if it really happened that way.

Being a lawyer, I was particularly interested in the judicial aspect of the story. Even though Ms. Doyle devotes many pages to it, I thought the whole issue could have been told in more detail and with a greater juridical accuracy - after all, as she says, hers became a leading case, so I should think it deserves a deeper analysis. Some readers might say that this is not the purpose of a memoir (which should be only concerned with what its author lived through and felt), to which I answer that, since Ms. Doyle chose to deal with the case in some detail, she ought to have engaged in a really serious analysis.

All in all, a disappointing book, though it might do for light holiday reading.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing and Touching Story.......2003-06-20

I highly recommend this book for a historical novel that will make you feel good when you turn the last page. The fight of a man to be reunited with his children is interesting in its detail as told by his own daughter. Whether for a bit of Irish flavor, need for a read or interest in the story line... this book will not fail to please.

5 out of 5 stars Have the times changed much??????.......2003-04-19

'Of all nature's gifts to the human race, what is sweeter to a man than his child' from Marcus Tullius Cicero

Dublin 1953. Abandoned by his wife for another man (his cousin), and deperste to have his six children looked after while he found work in england, Desmond Doyle trusted the word of the authorities, and put them all into temporary State care.

This novel is written form the viewpoint of nine-year-old Evelyn, Desmond's eldest child and only daughter, this moving true story recounts Desmond's shocking discovery on his return.
In his absence, the State has consigned the children to its permanent care. So began his desperate battle with the government to reunite his family, and change an unjust law.

Highly recommended book, showing the injustice of the church and the state in Dublin during the 50s.

Desmond Doyle, shows true love (in this instance) together with guts and bravery to fight for his children.

Just one point, LA from phila you have no idea of the facts or circumstances leading to the departure of Charlotte Doyle from the household, it would be helpful if your comments and opinions of her perceived mental illness had some basis in fact instead of self opinion. Please read the book and leave the blame to one side.
