    Book Description

Microorganisms, including those genetically modified (GMOs), are increasingly being released deliberately into the environment for different purposes. One major interest is the use of antagonistic organisms for biological control of pests and plant diseases. Both in the development of biocontrol agents and their later risk assessment and product approval, there is a need for methods that facilitate monitoring of such introduced microorganisms. This book particularly addresses the various approaches for monitoring introduced fungi and the current status of techniques which may be relevant to use are described. Such techniques include marker genes and other DNA-based techniques, serology using polyclonals or monoclonals, the use of enzymes or secondary metabolite profiles, and `electronic noses' as well as more traditional methods like dilution plating.

4 out of 5 stars A Must-read for Those Who Wanting Inside Info.......2006-08-01

Beside many detailed maps and interesting photos, this book also contains wonderful essays showing the authors' "inside" knowledge of Taiwan's history and culture, apparently written by expat residents who have lived in Taiwan for many years.

Information such as hiking excursions or setting up a cell phone account is very useful, but the book will benefit from a lot more Chinese characters and more tone markings of the Chinese language.

2 out of 5 stars Good Photos, but Insufferably Inadequate Travel Guide.......2004-10-07

Although the photographs are brilliant, and the descriptions of Taiwan's more famous sights are interesting; the practical travel necessities are sorely lacking.

There is hardly any mention of the means to arrive at the locations illustrated in the book, and relevant information regarding cities or transportation is nonexistent.

If one is looking for a book simply to admire Taiwan through photos and occassionally insightful prose, Insight Guide Taiwan is an adequate choice. However, speaking from experience, for helpful travel information, stick with Lonely Planet.

2 out of 5 stars Misrepresentation of Taiwanese.......2004-01-07

I think this book has great photos and perhaps the places are well known...but it needs to present both Mandarin and Taiwanese pronunciations because BOTH languages are widely used in Taiwan. The author apparently has been misinformed...and brainwashed by the Nationalist Party and KMT's textbook version of who the Taiwanese are. It treats Taiwanese as just ethnic "Chinese" and fails to discuss the DUAL ancestral heritage of the Taiwanese. It fails to discuss that the Hoklo (Hokkien)and Hakka who came to Taiwan and intermarried with women of the then existing Lowland Aboriginal peoples (pingpu) who lived over much of western Taiwan. It also fails to acknowledge even 100% pure aboriginal households who were forced to assimilate into the Hoklo culture from Fujian during Cheng-Kung's time. Like I said...Dual Ancestry. Check out DNA studies by George Mackay...and a brochure from US called "The Taiwanese Americans".

The book does mention Taiwanese Aboriginal peoples such as Paiwan and Atayal...but these are the Highland and Mountain Aboriginal tribes.

This book also states that "Min-nan-hua" is the more "correct" way to refer to "Taiwanese Language". Taiwanese language is derived from the "Hokkien" Language of Fujian Province, yes. However, Min-nan-hua includes another variation called "Teochiu, or Chaozhou hua" which is different. So Min-nan-hua is more broad...whereas "Hokkien" is narrowed down further...and is most similar to Taiwanese outside of Taiwan. Then again, "Hokkien" actually refers to "Fujian" and the people/culture/speakers of "Hokkien" are called "Hoklos".

    3 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2003-10-12

The keyword for this guide is photos. It's packed with full-color photos on almost every page. It seems almost like a National Geographic magazine. In fact, this is why I like this guide. It also has a lot of information about the culture, history, and people of Taiwan in the first half of the book. The second half is dedicated to an overview of the major cities and sights in Taiwan. Again, these are well illustrated with full-color photos on almost every page.

This guidebook has a few bad points though. The section on hotels and restaurants is very weak. You could probably find more information at the information counter at the airport. Also, the maps are a bit difficult to read. And finally, the transportation information is entirely inadequate. It doesn't tell you how to get around the country at all. For me, this is the weakest point. I feel uncomfortable traveling with this kind of guidebook.

I don't recommend using this as your primary guidebook. I do recommend this as a secondary guide though. It can help you choose destinations because it has a lot of full-color photos and also the culture section is excellent. I think this book is especially good for armchair travelers.

5 out of 5 stars Read this detailed intro to the country before you go........2003-01-28

I bought this book from Amazon and read it before my recent (first) trip to Taiwan. It provided an outstanding introduction that helped me to understand the country's people, culture, and history. Over half the book is real text, as opposed to the simple lists of attractions, hotels, and restaurants that dominate most guide books. Plan to spend several hours reading the book before your trip; you will not be disappointed. I got a lot more out of my trip because I understood what I was looking at.

I also used the book's short reference section to help me choose hotels, and the advice was on target. In addition, the maps and photos are uncommonly good.

Weaknesses are few. The book's descriptions of individual attractions, restaurants, & hotels (to help you decide whether to go) are too concise. Its inconsistent use of English spellings of Chinese words -- with no pronunciations given -- was a nuisance.

I travel a lot and have bought a number of guide books to various countries and cities. More guide books should be written like this one: really helping you to know the place, and appreciate what you are experiencing, instead of just telling you "go here and then go there". I'll buy more of this series, because it added value to my trip.

2 out of 5 stars Beautiful Pics: Little Help.......2007-01-04

I should have know better but I thought that the book might have some good information. Along with all the other Insight guides the photography is beautiful, but the practical helpful information was pretty much limited. This is a good book if you are going to stay in an upper end hotel like the Grand and use the pictures and the place names to help you book tours through your hotel. But if you really want to see the real Taipei, and enjoy the wonderful cuisine of the street vendors, and tour the night markets, this book offers little help. The maps provided were nice, but it would have been nice to have some Chinese characters added to the street names. Also characters would be nice if they were added to place areas to at least be able to show a taxi driver where you want to go. The Taipei's surroundings section had some nice places to visit, but how do you get there if you don't know any Chinese. Luckily for me I do have some Chinese under my belt so finding these places was not too difficult, but for most people that is not the case. I hope they can find some more helpful information and add it to future publications.

2 out of 5 stars do not get involed with local politics.......2006-07-31

in the book, it said that the attemp assasination to the president-elect Chen of 2004 presidential election is a "election drama", also it said some people in Taipei do not like people to call them Taiwanese. Those claims seem rootless, can you call people who live in Taiwan Chinese, it's like calling people who live in Singapore Chinese. We have chinese ethnic in Taipei, of course, but making "Taiwanese" a negative term is insulting all Taiwanese inhabitants here.

After combing the major bookstores in the Metro Detroit area, there are no travel guides to be found on Taiwan, until I found this one, and it is fantastic!

Why not, it is from the Discovery Channel people!

I did find only one other guide on Taiwan, but nowhere near the quality of this one.

I had bought a guide on St. Petersburg, Russia from the DK company, and I loved it. But most of the well known companies like DK, Fodor, Knoff, I don't believe publish one on Taiwan.

I am glad that the Insight people did, I am thourougly impressed. I will check them out from now on, when looking for travel guides for other countries!

A 21 year old edition in an excellent travel series (I have many books from this series, for their photography and cultural/historical revelations).

However, Taiwan has changed significantly over two decades; best to wait for the next edition and pay the extra $$.

                          Book Description

When Benjamin was seven years old, the only thing in the world he wanted to do was draw pictures. Sometimes it got him into trouble—when he "borrowed" Papa's best quill pen, when he drew the cows instead of milking them for Mama, when he used the cat's fur for brushes—but it also led him to some surprising adventures. Here, in lively words and vivid pictures, is the engaging true story of Benjamin West, the farm boy from colonial Pennsylvania who grew up to become the first world-famous American artist.

In Orbiting the Giant Hairball, the author tells how all children feel they are talented artists at age 6. By age 10, most are too inhibited to continue with art. That is a great loss to the children and to the world.

This heart-warming book is written in a way to encourage the natural interest of almost all children in exploring art. Young Benjamin West was always afraid that he will get in trouble with his artistic experiments, yet his parents and family were encouraging. These tales will help young people think that perhaps the adults in their lives will be encouraging as well. They will also appreciate that Benjamin West had many obstacles to overcome, like not having a pen to draw with, no paints, and no idea of what a paint brush was. That will help the young person realize that they should be more likely to succeed. West's evolution as an artist is also a good one for a young person. Start by drawing from life, gradually learn to add color, then meet other artists, and go on to get a art education.

As perfect as that is, it also turns out to be an accurate biographical statement of Benjamin West's life. Drawing on West's own recollections of these years and his biography, the book paints an artistically-focused picture of West's life as the 10th of 10 children. I especially loved how he discovered that he liked to draw, the way he got his first paints (from the local Native Americans and his Mother), and made his first paint brush (using hairs from his cat).

The book is also beautifully illustrated in a style to make the story inviting. I only wish that the book had included more and larger reproductions of West's work.

Be sure to share this book with the young people in your life around age 6. You may be able to help them avoid developing the misconception that they will not be able to become artists. These days there are many wonderful ways to use art as a vocation and as a hobby to bring great personal satisfaction. This book is a great way to facilitate that, and make the world a more beautiful and meaningful place.

4 out of 5 stars BENJAMIN WEST, HUMBLE ARTIST BEGINNING..........2000-06-26

This is a true story about Benjamin West, a native of Pennsylvania, who, during the colonial times, set forth to become a world famous artist. From his first pen and ink drawing at the age of seven, the author details events that lead to the rich and wonderful career this artist had. This book explains how a young Quaker boy from Lancaster County eventually became known around the world as the father of American art. A little extra humor with the cat...

My husband is a retired literature professor and was entirely mesmerized by this book, which was given to us as an anniversary gift. He believes that James Herriot is back here on earth. We are animal lovers but also very much enjoyed the spiritual and enlightening twists that we discovered are throughout this book. We didn't want it to end and hope that this is the first of many more books from this author.

                                      Book Description

The Lexicon Latinitatis Nederlandicae Medii Aevi (Dutch Dictionary of Medieval Latin) forms part of the project of the Union Academique Internationale to replace the old Glossarium of Du Cange by a set of modern national dictionaries of medieval Latin. The dictionary covers the period up to the end of the North European Middle Ages. Its sources are those texts, written by Dutch authors or on Dutch territory between c. 800 and 1500, which have been printed, and as such include accounts as well as chronicles, lives of saints, and philosophical and theological treatises. A choice of representative texts of each literary genre has been treated by computer to complete the material.

                                      Book Description

At age fourteen, Doris Eaton was the youngest performer in the Ziegfeld Follies, appearing with such legends as Eddie Cantor, Fanny Brice, Will Rogers, and Marilyn Miller. With two sisters and two brothers also appearing in the Follies in the years between 1918 and 1923, the Eatons became a well-known Broadway family.

Beginning their careers in the Washington, D.C., and Baltimore area, the "Seven Little Eatons" became seasoned performers, working the stock-company circuit before arriving in New York City and being caught up in the golden age of Broadway. Doris and her two sisters, Pearl and Mary, became popular dancers, and throughout the twenties they were never out of work. Doris was the first Eaton to go to Hollywood, and there in 1929 she introduced the song "Singing in the Rain" in the Hollywood Music Box Review. Later, Doris left show business and went on to great success building a chain of eighteen Arthur Murray studios in Michigan, which she owned and operated for thirty years.

In a refreshingly wise voice, The Days We Danced introduces readers to the successes and poignant sorrows of the Eaton family, including alcoholism, professional failures, early death, and even a tragic murder.

With memories that span almost a century, Doris recalls the state of the American theater during World War I, the "roaring twenties," the Great Depression--as well as the legendary names of the rich and famous celebrities with whom the Eatons worked and played. Accompanied by scores of unique period photographs, this memoir details the life of a woman who never stopped dancing--even when the curtain fell.

I actually had the honor of interviewing Doris Eaton Travis last fall for my college English class... and I was definately honored when she gave me a copy of her book and autographed it for me... I read it right away and absolutely loved it! She is an amazing woman and has lead and incredible life which she tells about in her book. At age 99, she is still going strong and is as busy as ever! I loved meeting and interviewing her and definately loved this book! I recommend it to anyone and everyone!

                                      5 out of 5 stars A Special Memoir.......2003-10-27

Doris Eaton Travis, at age 99, looks back at a full life, the early part of which is a valuable, firsthand portrait of early 20th Century entertainment, when vaudeville and the stage was still a central part of pop culture. Her frank appraisal of the rough road even successful performers would face as times changed is certainly an antidote to nostalgic ruminations about that long gone era! Highly recommended.

In 1972, a team of academics and archivists from the Imperial War Museum set about the momentous task of tracing ordinary men and women who lived through one of the most harrowing periods in modern history, the First World War.

Veterans from Britain, Germany, America and Australia were interviewed in detail about their day-to-day experiences on and off the front. It has since grown to be the most important archive of its kind in the world.

These audiobooks contain just a sample of these voices -- some of which have rested unheard for more than 30 years -- the forgotten voices of a generation no longer with us.

These are first hand accounts of men and women that lived through the first world war. It is all there--loyalty to your fellow soldiers, cowardice, indifferent heroism, terror, and the feeling of apartheid from home and family. The most striking rememberances I took from the book were the white feather incidents--where white feathers were given to soldiers out of uniform on leave in England by young women as a goad to get to the trenches.

5 out of 5 stars personal reading milestone.......2005-11-24

This is the first book I've ever read in one day; 'I rest my case'.

My most lingering memory is the story of the soldier who was shot for 'losing his way' and not showing up for a battle. When offered brandy by the narrator before meeting his maker, he said he'd 'never drunk spirits and wasn't going to start now'. Not such a coward, after all.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating wartime experiences by those who fought it.......2004-07-11

This book is full of fascinating wartime anecdotes given by the soldiers fighting it and the citizens involved in it. The staff of the UK's Imperial War Museum sifted through mountains of archives and picked out the very best to use in the book. Through the use of their own personal letters/interviews, the book follows the history of particular, mostly British, individuals during the war. It loosely follows the major battles of the Western Front and Gallipoli and even the Home Front.

Most of the letters vary in length between one paragraph and one page and are packed with the kind of realistic details that typical narrative histories of the World War I skip over. For example, in Gallipoli (p. 118) one soldier writes, "One of the biggest curses was flies. Millions and millions of flies. ... Immediately you bared any part of your body you were smothered." Short of actually being there, these kind of first person participant narratives deliver the essence of the war - harsh, demanding, brutal, comedic, and ocassionally surreal. The straightforward writing styles and unusual content make this book a true pleasure to read.

I have read over 40 books about the Great War, and this book is one of the best for personal narratives about the war. It's multi-person perspective delivers a well-balanced, insightful picture of the war at ground level (free of any hidden agenda). This book would perfectly complement a broad narrative history of World War I.

                                            5 out of 5 stars A Great Read & Excellent History.......2002-12-23

Max Arthur's new book covering the Great War is quite unique in that its content is nearly all first-hand accounts from people who experienced the horror of the Great War. The author has utilized a number of tape recorded interviews conducted by the Imperial War Museum in 1972. Many of the tapes from the Imperial War Museum Sound Archive had been forgotten and left unheard for years.

Now Max Arthur has put together many of these unheard voices from the Great War to produce this spellbinding and captivating book. I must admit that I was reluctant to buy this book as I was worried that a book full of short accounts would be too disjointed and really not detailed enough to satisfy my interest. I can honestly say that I truly enjoyed reading this book.

Each chapter of the book was a year of the Great War and was commenced by an introduction by the author offering a brief run down on the major events of that year. Then we heard from the men and women who participated in these events, from both sides of no-man's land. The author has concentrated mainly on the Western Front and Gallipoli and has tried to run the oral segments in chronological order.

I was really taken by these segments and I found it hard to stop reading. The accounts from these soldiers and civilians alike were at times humorous, strikingly direct, horrifying and on many occasions quite sad. I was really taken in by these accounts and I don't think that any World War One library would be complete without this title sitting on the shelf. I can honestly say that I learnt quite a few things from this book and I would place it along side such works offered by Lyn MacDonald. Well done to the author and the Imperial War Museum for allowing these veterans, many now long dead, the last word on their experiences in the Great War. This is a great book, you won't be disappointed.

This is mostly from interviews from British and Australian troops who lived through the war. It is amazing to hear what they went through, in wars since the warriors were almost spoiled in comparison. I have read everything on Vietnam and world war 2, here they lost more men in one day of one attack then in the whole 15 years of Vietnam. That they could continually follow the orders that were nothing less than suicidal are beyond me.

I recommend for anyone interested in first person stories of this or any other war to educate yourself on what it was like with this book.

A fantastic read. This is not a story book this is real thoughts from real people in a very real war.
This book really takes you into the minds and souls of those very very brave men & Women.
Excellent. The only reason I did not give this 5 stars is that the book could have been longer. My only grievence. Thanks to the brave who lost their lives. Long may their memory live.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL WORK - GOOD ADDITION TO YOUR COLLECTION.......2006-05-18

Detailed descriptions of great battles and campaigns and after battle reports are good and certainly worthwhile, but this work is just as important, if not more important in some ways, than the first mentioned. This is a collection, taken primarily from original tapes, of the recollections of those who were actually there. As one reviewer has already pointed out, most of these observations were made by those actually in the trenches, actually working on the home front, and not just the recollections of Generals, leaders and journalists. This is quite refreshing and informative. The author has, as much as possible, kept the recollections in chronological order and has given us a brief history before each segment. Some of the recollections are quite mundane, but in being so, make them that much more special. The many black and white photos added much. The only problem I had with the book was that each nationality represented here have used their own colloquialisms, many of which I had never encountered before. But...this actually, in the end, was an advantage for me personally, as it forced me, due to pure curiosity, to do further research and find out just what they were referring to. I learned much this way! Most, if not all, of this generation is gone now and we are quite fortunate to have records such as this. I hope there are more to come. Overall I highly recommend. I collect books from and about this era and recommend you add this on to your collection.

I thought the book was out standing of being told from the prospective of the common soldier and the ironies of war. this was an important work as to the feelings of the soldiers and not nesserly of the high command. very enlightning Norm Miller

5 out of 5 stars Excellent First-Hand Accounts from WW1.......2005-02-27

Max Arthur's book covering the Great War is quite unique in that its content is nearly all first-hand accounts from people who experienced the horror of the Great War.

4 out of 5 stars The British experience in World War II.......2006-03-30

I hadn't realized how much my previous reading about World War II had been skewed towards the American experience, but this book certain made me aware of that bias in my understanding of this period of history. Compiled from the archives of The Imperial War Museum, this collection of personal narratives provides an intimate, eyewitness glimpse at various aspects of the war, with a particular focus on the British war experience. Much of the material from the war in Europe was familiar to me, particularly from 1942 on, when the US entered the war. However, this book provided a vivid reminder that the British experience during WWII was significantly different than the American one. They had been involved in intense combat for more than two years before the Americans joined the fray, and the war came home to the general population of the United Kingdom in a dangerous and violent fashion that we were fortunate to avoid. The stories of the Battle of Britain and the Blitz are vivid reminders of Hitler's ambitions to invade and conquer the British Isles. The book also fills in gaps in my knowledge of the war in the Mediterranean/North Africa as well as Southern Asia. This book is a valuable record of the expriences of the men and women who experienced the war, and help provide an understanding of the history of the war.

A landmark oral history — the latest in the bestselling and award-winning Forgotten Voices series.

Drawing on the Imperial War Museum’s extensive aural archive, Joshua Levine brings together voices from both sides of the Blitz and the Battle of Britain to give us a compelling picture of this turbulent time.

In June 1940, British citizens prepared for an imminent German onslaught. Hitler’s troops had overrun Holland, Belgium and France in quick succession, and the British people anticipated an invasion would soon be upon them. From July to October, they watched the Battle of Britain play out in the skies above them, aware that the result would decide their fate. Over the next nine months, the Blitz killed more than 43,000 civilians. For a year, the citizens of Britain were effectively front-line soldiers in a battle that united the country against the enemy.

We hear from the soldiers, airmen, fire fighters, air-raid wardens and civilians, people in the air and on the ground, on both sides of the battle, giving us a thrilling account of Britain under siege. With first-hand testimonies from those involved in Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain, and the Blitz, this is the definitive oral history of the period.
