I really found this book to be a vauable source of in formation about Van Gogh. So much can be learned about an artist through studying his sketches and drawings. Its a very beautiful book and a perfect addition to an art enthusiast's collection. This book offered much more than the traditioal Van Gogh collections. Unlike the majority of Van Gogh books, it offered more than reprints of only his most famous works.

Just what I had needed.......2006-08-20

A friend gave me this book shortly after I lost my beloved Tasha, a German Shepherd who brought endless joy into my life. Her own life was cut short by cancer, a month short of her 5th birthday.

There are all sorts of books available deal so seriously with grief and coming to grips with loss and bereavement. If that is what you need, then the other current review of this book is correct: this is not the book for you. If, on the other hand, what you need is for someone to hold you, rock you, and whisper silly "meaningless" things while you cry your grief out, then this book may be for you.

Virginia Ironside has been an "agony aunt" journalist for some time and has collected thousands of anecdotes on all sorts of topics. She's gone beyond collecting, though, to finding resources to share with people who have too much to cope with to look for them on their own. This is obviously a collection of those anecdotes as well as a resource of (yes, British) resources for dealing with the loss of a pet. The "messages" of this book have as much depth as a magazine or newspaper article can have. But there is much to be said about the value, the worth, of a soft touch as opposed to some serious, deep examination by some psychologist or doctor or self-proclaimed expert on coping with grief and death.

Nothing I could read would ever make the loss of my Tasha "make sense". But reading the anecdotes did more than make me feel that I wasn't alone -- after all, if misery loves company, what good is miserable company? No, these stories made me remember all the joy of the time I was blessed to share with my dog. Ironside organizes of these anecdotes into chapters based on the questions we all have, such as coping with the decision to put a pet "to sleep" or facing the inevitable, uncaring "it was only an animal" comment someone is bound to say. And Ironside's own prose weaves them together with common sense advice, which is often more helpful than what any expert can share.

The one chapter that helped me move beyond my loss was, appropriately, the last in the book. The message, from your pet's point of view, is basically this: "You shared so much love with me, but don't let it end with me. There are others out there that need your love -- find another and give to it the same love you gave to me." When the time was right, that sentiment gave me the will to look past my grief.

And by circumstance or serendipty, I find myself writing this review on the birthday of Leyna, my wonderful and true best friend, who today finishes her fifth year of bringing me joy and begins her sixth.

If you buy this book, I hope it brings you the solace I found in it.

British outlook and anecdotes detract from point of book........1999-06-02

Not surprisingly, I bought this book seeking comfort while mourning the loss of my 16-year friend and companion cat. I did not find it in this book. The book is not bad; but it is British. Grief is universal and recognizes no national boundaries. But the language in this book is just different enough to be distracting from the main point of the book. There are approximately two references to the USA in the book, and neither is terribly complimentary. The rest is expository on the greiving process interspersed with brief, anecdotal stories by others who have lost their pets. The exposition is superficial, and as previously stated, not terribly helpful or comforting. There are other, better books available on the subject. I would consider this a mediocre, average treatment of the subject. I would not recommend it as a first choice for greiving pet owners -- particularly in America.

I collect books on growing herbs and without exception they are all useful. Some books are personalized and others give general and basic information. This is probably one of the very best "all round" books that I've ever seen.

Some of the topics that are discussed are as follows: Climate, Topography, Garden Style, Understanding Basic Botany, Species Chart, Soil Preparation, Weeding, Propagating Herbs, Over-Wintering Plants, Drying Herbs, Cooking with Herbs, Medicinal Herbs, a Plant by Plant Guide and a USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map.

The section on Preventing Pests and Diseases has very good illustrations of plant damage with a drawing of the insect culprit next to the herb. The Species Chart is six pages long and gives the growth form, the preferred climates, soil conditions, propagation season, the primary usage of the plants and the pests and diseases that each plant is susceptible to getting.

This is a very concise and usable book.

A very good herb gardening book, better for large spaces..........2000-04-24

+AH4-More of a 3.5, but I'll round up :-) This is one of the first herb gardening books I got. Because I am not gardening in a large space, like a raised bed or half my backyard, many of the directions and much of the information was sort of overwhelming, at least for right now. I do mostly container herb gardening and in flower boxes and barrels, so there wasn't much info specifically geared for these types in this book, but cut down the organic gardening, soil preperation, pest control,+AH4-+AH4- sowing, watering, and composting info into small-scale size and it's great.

However, the info on the herbs specifically, which ones work for what climate zones and how to cultivate, dry and use them is wonderful and all but makes up for the focus on larger-scale gardens. The info on more than 50 common herbs is invaluable, especially the chart that details each one individually with all the necessary info you need at a glance, name, growth form and size, climate, soil condition,+AH4-+AH4- propagation, pests, and primary uses. It is a good supplemental to the other gardening books I have. I use the herb chart and specific herb info in the back of the book a lot, the instructions on how to harvest and dry the herbs, and the culinary and craft ideas, such as how to make herbal vinegar, dressings, spreads, teas, dyes, potpourri, soap, oils, and more.

It is a very good book for a beginning herbal gardener, especially one interested in raising them organically and wanting to+AH4-+AH4- know the many things you can do with herbs once you've grown them! I would just hasten to add that this book would be best in conjunction with a book on container or patio gardening or something in a smaller scale if that is your main goal, otherwise for larger-scale backyard herb gardening from the ground up, it's perfect.+AH4-

One of the best books on the topic I've read. The author clearly explains major design principles, teaches you how to apply them, and then encourages individuality and innovation in designing your own home. I've read many decorating books and this is one of the best.

As teenagers from a rough part of Newark, New Jersey, Sampson Davis, Rameck Hunt, and George Jenkins had nothing special going for them except loving mothers (one of whom was a drug user) and above-average intelligence. Their first stroke of luck was testing into University High, one of Newark's three magnet high schools, and their second was finding each other. They were busy staying out of trouble (most of the time), and discovering the usual ways to skip class and do as little schoolwork as possible, when a recruitment presentation on Seton Hall University reignited George's childhood dream of becoming a dentist. The college was offering a tempting assistance package for minorities in its Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Plus Program. George convinced his two friends to go to college with him. They would help each other through. None of them would be allowed to drop out and be reabsorbed by the Newark streets.

Although this inspiring and easy-to-read book would be enjoyed by any teenager or educator, it seems perfect for minority youth, especially young men of junior high and high school age, who may lack more immediate role models. I give these young men 10 stars if I could. This story is for the young as well as the old. Everyone has a story and this story needed to be told, it doesn't matter what happened or where u have been, it's what your doing now and where u r going. It's an inspirational story and I am proud of them. For the reviewers that's being negative (get a life) maybe in today's world this story will inspire more children to go to college instead of being on the streets. I'm glad this story was written and told and they r an inspiration to all.

The Pact is about three young men who lived in the projects around drugs and peer pressure from old friends who did not want anything out of life. So George and Sam and Rameck made a pact to go to college. The young men had positive people in their lives, like a teacher, a friend's father, and a dentist. I would recommend this book to other people because the book tells how three young men made a pact with one another not to let peer presure rule their lives. They went to college and gave back to the neighborhood. They are all doctors and a dentist. They had some disappointments in their lives, but they made it. This is a true story.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It reads very well and the perspective that each of the three men gives is very interesting. I highly recommend it for any young person who wants to do something with their life.

Good for some, not for other - you decide!.......2000-05-10

I read this book in a History class of the Tudor-Stuart period in college. While I found the book interesting, many others did not. The book combines documents by Elizabeth herself, many rare or hard to find and of a personal nature, and secondary source comentaty. The book gives an often unheard naritive of Elizabeth I's childhood, accendancy, and reign.

One problem that many other students found in my class was the constant personal narritives given by the author. While at times they are quite dramatic and through provoking, they are often biased and pure speculation (yet presented as fact). Some issues and events are taken someone out of context or presented in a slanted view.

While I would definatly recomend this book to anyone wanting to know more and about Elizabeth I, I must caution the reader to question some of the evidence and speculation given in the book. The reader must constantly be on the look out for things that may be biased. This book does make an excellent read for the amature historian, but like all historical books, do not base all your knowledge on this one work.

A good basic book to keep with you if your travel with out much planning. My only complaint about the book is that, after spending the night at several locations mention in the book, I got the feeling that not every location write up included a night's stay by the author. Just my two pennies

This hosteling guide is well-organized with accurate descriptions of each hostel. It includes ratings on noise, cleanliness, safety and available facilities of each hostel. It is excellent for both first time hostellers and experienced travellers alike.

Beautiful, but not a pinup calendar.......2001-01-02

This is a wonderful "book" with beautiful water color illustrations of Frank Lloyd Wright's Designs. The reason I'm writing this review is that though a great book, it was not what I have expected to buy. I was looking for a paperback 12-month pinup calendar, the kind that you could hang on walls. This item is a calendar "book" with the monthly calendar in the pages. While it still may be useful, it was not what I have anticipated. I do not quite recall whether it was me who misread the item description or it was not described properly by Amazon. Anyhow, I'm sure you will enjoy this very good "book" (high quality paper, print, illustrations...), but do realize (hopefully soon enough, unlike me) that this is not a pinup calendar. :-)

Guerrilla Marketing involves using your time, energy, and imagination to fuel your marketing campaigns. If you have already been exposed to the basic concepts of Guerrilla Marketing (see book of this name by the same author), you are ready for mastering this powerful technique.

The best way I can explain what's in the book is to say that this 250 page book breaks down the Guerrilla Marketing process into 100 small steps or components. Each step has a particular insight (the insight is always in italics) that is the central focus and the author spends 2 pages explaining this insight.

For example - insight # 25 is about telemarketing. The author explains that 20% of any sales organization brings in 80% of the sales and suggests that the rest of the organization could benefit by using the scripts from these highly successful group of people. Six ways to make a telemarketing call successful are outlined along with the telemarketing strategy that guerrilla marketers can follow.

Although these insights are not that deep and the material surrounding the insights not that revolutionary, almost everything in this book has been known to work if implemented correctly. This book is best used in conjunction with the other books in the Guerrilla Marketing series. As with the other books in this best selling series, the price is so low that you can't lose buying this book.

The only downside to this book is its weak coverage of Guerrilla Marketing insights relating to the Internet. Of the several books I own by the same author, I see the same trend in all of them. Since most of these books were written before the Internet took off, any coverage seems more like an afterthought and not really integrated with the rest of the material. Other than that, I can sincerely say that this book provides great value for the price. Good luck with your Guerrilla Marketing plans!

... You could have the most incredible life altering product and it won't mean anything if you don't market it properly. That's why I was so earger to read this book. It had gotten great reviews and it was talked about often but when I read it I was so disspointed. There was nothing novel or exciting about the advice given in this book; it was at times too general and too detailed to be of much use. After I had read Mastering Guerrilla Marketing, I read Guerrilla PR Wired by Michael Levine. This book was also highly recommended and I was slightly apprehensive. But I was pleased. The writing was sharp and intelligent, the advice was up-to-date and relevant, and the theories were right on target. Mastering Gerrilla Marketing tries but it comes up woefully short.

Revisionist nonsense.......2004-04-24

The book is nonsense. If it was truly accepted as a doctoral dissertation, the University on Nantes has lowered its standing as an academy valuing truth. Interested readers are directed to Saul Friedlander's biography: Kurt Gerstein: The Ambiguity of Good (apparently OUP and not available from Amazon). Gerstein's account has been affirmed by, among others, some of the people who were there and were later tried (see Gitta Sereny's Into That Darkness for interviews with Franz Stangl and others). Finally, Yitzhak Arad's Belzec, Sobibor, Treblinka: The Operation Reinhard Death Camps gives a definitive look at these institutions.

Here is the headline-making university doctoral dissertation that debunks the key "Holocaust" testimony of SS officer Kurt Gerstein -- the enigmatic, twisted Third Reich functionary who claimed to have witnessed mass gassings of Jews in 1942. great work, an eye-opener.......1999-10-08

This is not anti-semitic as one reviewer has claimed. It's a thesis which proves once and for all that the statements made by Kurt Gerstein are in the realms of pure fantasy. The fact that Holocaust scholars have often cited Gerstein as a credible witness is very revealing. If you read "The Holocaust" by Martin Gilbert you will see how he has altered Gersteins' description of the gas chambers in order to make it more credible! Gilbert is not alone in this blatant altering of the text.

It is well worth your time to read this and see the implausibility of the "confessions".

This book has nothing "anti-Semitic" or anti-Jewish! This book is not written to deny the Jewish holocaust in W.W.II! This book is written having at its core a doctoral thesis, a work of textual analysis of 6 different versions of "confession". These "confessions" or interrogations are extremely important because they are the SINGLE statements made by an SS officer who acknowledges the alleged organized mass-gassings of Jewish prisoners in German war-concentration camps! This "confessions" are widely quoted, but we are very surprised to see that Mr. Roques proves that most of quotations are wrong and distorted because the authors who made the quotations wanted to eliminate the fantasist and impossible facts told by Gerstein! Anyone who reads the real versions of the confessions is struck by their lack of consistency, they being very close to a science-fiction story! The work of Mr. Roques is excellent and very courageous, because of the fanatism of the defenders of these stories! Any reader who will finish the book, will find the facts so clear indicating that this "confessions" are pure fantasies, having no resemblance with the reality!
