Informative information on a rare subject.......2006-11-23
This book written by an author closely associated with the western occult theories and practices brings together a wealth of information on a plant steeped in folklore and religious myths. While not a pharmacological book,in that it does not give dosages of the plant by weight,it still gives excellent descriptions of the effects of and the useage of this plant. That the author did not give the doseage is to be expected as wild or even cultivated plants can not be given exact dosage amounts considering the potency of the plant is dependent upon growing conditions i.e. excellent growing conditions would make for a more potent herb while lack of water, sun or soil nutrients would make for a less potent herb. Herbal medicine is not an exact science because of this fact. Also the author did not write the book solely to extoll the mind altering effects of the plant but to put into context the myth and mystery,to gather together information from obscure sources and present it in a readible fashion. Approaching this book from a metaphysical, historical or spiritual alternative view gives the reader an insight into the myth and historical use of the plant that can not be found in many other books.
Not bad considering, but lacking in many areas.......2001-08-14
Ok, I bought this book hoping for information that a pharmacist might use if inclined to use mandrake. Is there a correlation I should be aware of for body mass versus amounts of mandrake to achieve non-fatal results. Yes, there is, but it was not in the book.
On the other hand, it did give a very informative description of the effects (quantities omitted) and the history of this magickal herb.

A springboard to savings.......2006-06-01
Bought this book a couple of weeks before traveling to Israel. Guidebooks invariably save you much more than the money you spend in buying them, and this book was not an exception. Found it very informative and easy to read. We visited Israel at Passover and Easter (Orthodox)--were there from April 17 through April 24, 2006. It was a busy tourist season and the book proved helpful in making first night's reservation in Tel Aviv (at Hotel Nes Ziona). [Next day we found a comparable but cheaper hotel (Hotel Eilat, not mentioned in Let's Go) not too far away and moved there.] Generally speaking, in lodging and eating we found prices higher than those cited in the book. This was expected as the book was printed in 2003 based on research done in August 2000 and the publisher had warned the readers they "may have different experiences since prices, dates, hours, and conditions are subject to change." Let's Go Israel covers Jerusalem, most favorite Israeli destination, extensively. Though I believe it should have mentioned the possibility of staying in West Bank (say in Bethlehem which is hardly 20 minutes from Jerusalem) and making day trips to the big city.
On a lighter note, the book doesn't warn readers about dog poop that is found everywhere on Tel Aviv sidewalks. Apparently Israelis are not too scrupulous about cleaning after their pets, if such laws exist in Israel.
why all the hate?.......2006-01-12
I've been living in Israel for about four months... saw this in my friend's room and fell in love with it! Seems to be very well-tied-in with the culture, pointing out interesting items "off the beaten path"... Never saw the Frommer's but in any case this is a whole heck of a lot better than the Rough Guide I bought. Anyway, I'm going to probably buy this.
Outdated and Incorrect..........2005-08-06
While there was a lot of great ideas and information in this book, the phone numbers and address sites that were listed were EXTREMELY inaccurate. The maps in it were excellent. I just think that it is very important to review the information and put in up-to-date material. Especially in this time of turmoil, this is the most recent publication in all of our searches for Israel trips. So as far as that goes, I guess it's better than nothing. I also think that there should be a choice of accomodations listed, as opposed to just Youth Hostels and "cheap-end" accomodations, my wife and I were often looking for moderate hotels, but there were never any listed in this book. Until an updated book is published, this should be the one that you go with if you are looking for a tourbook of Israel.
Don't Waste Your Money on this Book.......2005-01-31
From the inaccuracies in the so-called historical review to the inaccurate descriptions of non-existent "perils and pitfalls" and the failure to describe the real areas of concern, it's hard to believe the author of this guidebook has ever been to Israel. Buy Frommers and use the on-line updates.
what a disaster.......2004-10-24
I borrowed two guide books from the library, had then special order this,,,,, what a bad guidebook, I am an experinced traveller and found this unusable for trip planning. This is what you get when you let eighteen year olds write travel guides. Give it a skip, and buy the frommers and use the internet to fill the blanks. I lead tour groups, and need decent information.

Wonderful guide, don't leave home without it!.......2003-04-05
If you are planning to gaze upon the Pyramids, climb Mount Sinai, sail the Nile or explore the catacombs of Alexandria your first step is to pick up a copy of "Let's Go Egypt". If you go by yourself or better still treat yourself to a package tour complete with a Nile cruise you will find this volume helpful and insightful. The National Museum of Antiquities in Cairo is probably the most famous museum in the world. It has an extensive collection. "Lets Go" breaks down every room and serves as a useful guide. Egypt is a amazing destination and on every trip there I have experienced a warm welcome from the people. While bustling Cairo is what most tourists first see don't miss the smaller towns along the Nile in the "Upper Kingdom" between Aswan and Luxor. The sprawling temple of Karnak and the smaller but still impressive temple of Luxor are situated at Luxor, Egypt. The Temple of the Sun at Abu Simbel is a very short plane ride from Aswan, Egypt. At Aswan don't miss the Temple of Isis on Philae and do return some evening for the Sound and Light show. Let's Go will serve as a detailed companion to these and many other wonders. I was amazed at the level of detail and how up to date the book was. I believe Egypt is still a safe destination and found security for tourists to be a top priority. I do recommend a tour with Nile cruise especially for the first timer and even for seasoned travelers. You get a an excellent package including hotels, some meals (full board on Nile cruises), all outside cabin state-rooms, transportation, escorts that save you lots of hassle, wonderful guides that illuminate the past and usually, new friends to share it with. Following the common sense advice found in Let's Go will ensure a safe, happy and memorable trip. Have a wonderful time! Don't forget "Let Go" and bring candy for the kids!

Great overview of middle east.......2006-06-01
Let's Go is a great series for guidebooks, especially for the budget traveler. This book is no exception, although the prices are a bit outdated at this point. The book covers Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon, and Israel. If you're going to be travelling in that area, then I highly recommend it -- it's great to have so much information on the region on little book!

Book Description
The Geometric Alphabet of Cultural Landscapes contains six articles by prominent Russian philosophers, geologists, geographers, historians, and artists that explore the Russian view of the earth's surface, how this space has been perceived and interpreted by humans, and the material legacy that this perception and use has produced. This is an important collection of writings that represents one of the earliest compilations of Russian thought on and synthesis of these subjects following the demise of the Soviet Union. This title is beautifully designed, printed on coated paper, and contains full color throughout.

Awesome read for the dog lover!.......2007-01-04
Fantastic read! I couldn't put it down. Do yourself a favor and read everything with Ken Foster's name on it!
Great book, available everywhere but Amazon..........2004-04-23
A great book of essays by Chuck Palahniuk, Elissa Schappell, Chris Offutt and others, and about dogs--the good, the bad, the ugly. But apparently Amazon isn't interested in selling it, so go to any of the other bookstores online or ask your local bookstore to order it. (Amazon has been listing it as Out of Stock, but it actually is available!!!)
For the dogs.......2002-09-22
Dog Culture has a little of everything for the dog lover. Its funny at times, sad, and up lifting. This book is a collection of stories/essays about people and their relationship to dogs. Ken Fosters' story is probably the best one in the book. But this book also contains a Chuck Palahniuk (Author of Fight Club and Choke)essay about rescue dogs which is also very good. There were about two or three stories that just didn't seem to fit here, but all in all, collectively this is a very good read.

Book Description
In Golden Mountain, Irene Kai tells a deeply personal story of how she overcame cultural bias and a difficult mother to move from China to America and become an independent woman. The child of a loveless arranged marriage, Kai was born into a culture where women were told to accept their fate and not question authority. Beginning with her great-grandmother, Wong Oi, who was humiliated by her husband's concubine, Kai traces the lives of women in her family through three generations until she reaches her own childhood. As a teen, Kai was brought to New York City by her American-born mother and began to rebel against her mother's physical and psychological abuses. In New York, she also discovered art, sexuality, and herself. Finding the strength to prosper in the "Golden Mountain," Kai made her own life and became truly independent, but she could not forget from where she came—in a poignant finale, Kai comes to terms with the family she left behind. An uplifting, unpredictable story, Golden Mountain is a book about overcoming, and coming to terms with, one's culture.
Customer Reviews:
Compelling story.......2005-12-02
I loved this compelling, richly textured, vividly descriptive story. Not only was I transported into Chinese culture over four generations of the author's family, but into how family patterns and cultural mores impact us all. I was also inspired by the hope in this book. The author transcends many obstacles, including family abuse, and courageously builds a meaningful, new life.
A Powerful Story of a Woman's Journey to Create Her Own Destiny.......2005-12-01
I loved this book. I could not put it down. The Golden Mountain is about Irene Kai's journey to claim her power and authenticity. It's a memoir of four generations of Chinese women, but it's really "every woman's" journey. It shows her transition from Hong Kong to the U. S., and how she breaks free from the restrictions of her ethnic background in a way that her mother and grandmother could not. In America, she achieves wealth and success as an artist and businesswoman. But Kai's story of what's possible doesn't end here. She eventually leaves her business and her marriage and moves to a small town. There, she explores and heals the family patterns she realized were still influencing her, even after she thought she had broken away from them. In the process, she creates a new life and a new dream, one that takes her beyond the American dream to live her own authentic destiny.
There's Always Hope.......2005-11-30
I enjoyed this book enormously -- not only for what it taught me about Chinese culture -- but for what it taught me about the universality of women's experience in patriarchial cultures. As always, I am both awed and humbled by the resilience of the human spirit. Irene's story offers hope and inspiration to anyone who has ever felt trapped by circumstances.
bland.......2005-09-21
Okay, may be the story is quite emotional, but it definitely did not come across that way. Lines such as "Won-hoy got married to a rich wife, and had 5 kids" goes on and on... giving the reader no motivation to continue.
You WILL enjoy this book........2005-05-03
This is the best book I've read in a couple of years actually, I was fortunate to stumble across it at the library. I love reading culturally focused books, and I really enjoyed the unique format of this one, with the first several chapters telling the story of great-grandmother, grandmother, mother and then daughter Irene. It was interesting to eventually get the true perspective on the same events from all the different women, and understand why having learned their backgrounds. I hope the author is working on her next book, I'll be waiting for it. Thank you for a great story, I really enjoyed it.
Book Description
They were known as the Ascendancy, the dashing aristocratic elite that controlled Irish politics and society at the end of the eighteenth century—and at their pinnacle stood Caroline and Robert King, Lord and Lady Kingsborough of Mitchelstown Castle. Heirs to ancient estates and a vast fortune, Lord and Lady Kingsborough appeared to be blessed with everything but marital love—which only made the scandal that tore through their family more shocking. In 1798, at the height of a rebellion that was setting Ireland ablaze, Robert King was tried for the murder of his wife’s cousin—a crime born of passion that proved to have extraordinary political implications. In her brilliant new book, Janet Todd unfolds the fascinating story of how this powerful Anglo-Irish family became entwined with the downfall not only of their class, but of their very way of life.
Like Amanda Foreman’s bestselling Georgiana, Daughters of Ireland brings to life the world of a glittering elite in an age of international revolution. When her daughters, Margaret and Mary, were at their most impressionable, Lady Kingsborough hired the firebrand feminist Mary Wollstonecraft to be their governess, little realizing how radically this would alter both girls’ beliefs and characters. The tall, striking Margaret went on to provide crucial support to the United Irishmen in the days leading up to the Rebellion of 1798, while soft, pleasing Mary indulged in an illicit, and all but incestuous love affair that precipitated multiple tragedies.
As the Kingsboroughs imploded, the most powerful and colorful figures of the day were swept up in their drama—the dashing aristocrat turned revolutionary Lord Edward Fitzgerald; the liberal, cultivated Countess of Moira, a terrible snob despite her support of Irish revolutionaires; the notorious philanderer Colonel George King, whose sexual debauchery was matched only by his appalling cruelty; Britain’s cold calculating prime minister William Pitt and its mad ruler King George III.
With irresistible narrative drive and richly intimate historic detail, Daughters of Ireland an absolutely spellbinding work of history, biography, passion, and rebellion.
Customer Reviews:
An interesting read.......2004-11-29
This is indeed an intersting book with plenty of information and details, but don't expect it to be just about the Kingsborough sisters. Todd does an excellent job of illuminating the situation in Ireland at the end of the 18 century - and the place of the Irish elite in the rebellion that would arise prior to the Act of Union that created Great Britian. This book is not about the lives of Margaret and Mary King as the title implies, but rather looks at their lives at the same time as much of this is happening. It is true that Margaret participates in the rebellion at a certain level and it is her life that is the most intersting part of the book. I wish that Todd had focused soley on her and made her the center of the book and had all the other information relate to her. Mary King is mentioned and plays an important part of her family's life - but there is no depth to her character - not like we see with Margaret. And the author appears to have made some mistakes about the dates concernong Mary's life and death (she states that Caroline King left her daughter money in her will in 1825, but Mary had died by 1819 according to the author).
I liked this book but I wish that the author had given more thought to the books structure.
A seductive voyage into 18th century Ireland.......2004-04-07
It's almost Jane Austen territory - two Protestant Irish aristocratic sisters, neglected by their wealthy dysfunctional parents, get a new governess: and she's none other than Mary Wollstonecraft! Even though the great radical author spent only a year with the family, it was enough to inject revolutionary ideas and plant seeds that bore fruit far in the future. The action doesn't end when she departs, the clangorous melodrama of "interesting times" merely opens there. The sisters, Margaret and Mary Kingsborough, set off on careers that will have you fastening your seatbelt. Margaret marries a stupid aristocrat, yet promotes and helps to foment the Irish Rebellion of 1798. Mary elopes with her married cousin, an action that seems almost tame compared to the rest of the storm and thunder of this narrative, which climaxes with a failed rebellion, and ends with pigs dining where the wealthy Kingboroughs once lived. Historian Janet Todd, in marshalling a vast amount of complex 18th century Irish history, gives a crash course in a bloody, tragic and overlooked era, and does it with beguiling skill and insight. Recommended to anyone who'd like to learn about this slice of Irish history: if the revolution is complex, don't worry, the murders, pursuits, dalliances and intrigues will keep you awake!
