Gardens in Pastels.......2001-06-26
If you are a beginner, this would be the book for you. It is simply written. The book covers the basics of pastel and limited information on perspective, color theory, and atmospheric distance. I was disappointed in the book because for the money spent, I expected an adult book. The book is a thin soft cover paperback. It would be great for a 12-15 year old. Any other pastel book would cover the same basics and more. Gardens in Pastel would be a good checklist/reminder for painting on location.
Book Description
A practical and inspiring watercolour and pastel book on an ever-popular subject. Flowers and gardens provide irresistible subject matter to amateur artists. However inspiration from their own gardens or the wealth of parks and public gardens about the country is not always easy to translate on paper. As an accomplished painter who also has a passion for flowers and gardens, Alison Hoblyn brings readers a rare insight into the practicalities of painting with watercolour and pastel, plus the problems and pleasures to be encountered in capturing the essence of a garden scene. In addition to giving sound, practical advice, the book takes readers further by relating the observations made through painting gardens to an understanding of their design. It also shows how to bring the best out of individual blooms, and groups of flowers.

Painting Flowers and Gardens in Watercolor and Pastel.......2005-02-06
This is one of the worst art books I have ever purchased. I thought it would be a mixed medium method or a way to combine watercolor and pastels. Each medium was handled separately. The pastel portion was a disgrace. It was very childlike. I am a pastel and watercolorist. Any other book on beginning pastel would be better. The watercolor would be informative to anyone who new nothing about watercolor. Shame on the publisher for allowing this book to even use the word pastel. I feel I was robbed.
Painting Flowers & Gardens in watercolour and pastel.......2000-04-23
I highly recommend the book Painting Flowers & Gardens in watercolour and pastel. Although not a how to book with step-by-step demonstrations, it nonetheless contains an abundance of technical information. Alison Hobylyn completely opens her worldliness of artistic skills in a delightful commensense manner covering both watercolour and pastel materials, composition, drawing, perspective, and creating mood in a painting. The uniqueness of Hobyn's teaching approach is her ability to use examples of her sensitive painting style and vision to demonstrate the ideas she presents. Anyone searching for the window into the heart, soul, and expertise of a talented watercolour and pastel artist should most definitely read this excellent book.

Alabama Wildlife, Vol. I.......2006-03-09
Well written and informative.Perfect for the educator or naturalist.I paricularly liked the distribution maps, habitat, life and ecology information.
Customer Reviews:
Great read for any lover of reptiles and amphibians!.......2004-05-25
A wonderful guide for identifying and learning about reptiles and amphibians in Alabama. I love this book because it goes into great detail about specimens. It is so much more extensive and educational than a field guide. I have identified various herps correctly using this book. The only aspect I would change would be to include color photos of the animals described. The black and white photos are great but you can not see the beauty of the wonderful reptiles and amphibians. It just makes me want to go out and discover the live specimens for myself. A must have addition to anyone's library.
The BEST book on Alabama herps, period........1999-11-30
Mount's book is the most authoritative to date on Alabama herpetology. Written for the professional and lay reader alike, this book is a "must-have" for herpetologists working not only in Alabama, but anywhere in the Southeast (I've already worn out a couple of copies). The detailed range maps are among its most useful features (multiple dots in counties indicating actual collection localities, not just a single dot per county). Another helpful section is Mount's description of the physiographic regions of the state, which he discusses as "herpetofaunal regions." Published in 1975, the book is becoming a bit dated, but a forword by the author in the 1996 re-issue brings the reader up to speed on recent discoveries. Black-and-white photographs accompany each species account.
Book Description
The fascination with aluminum giftware is that there is so much to choose from. You can collect it by the piece or by the pattern. It never grows old and the items are just as useful today as when they were first made. Here are serving dishes, children's playthings, napkin rings, pitchers, smoking accessories, salt and pepper shakers, vases, trays and more in popular as well as unusual patterns, all presented in clear color photographs and with today's market values. Aluminum giftware is twentieth century design of enduring usefulness and beauty.
Customer Reviews:
Uninformed Author.......2004-05-11
The book vacillates between bad judgement, factual errors, and bad fiction. The pricing is misguided, a good share of the captions are factually incorrect, and far too many of the pieces pictured have not been properly cleaned. Any collector who is only slightly informed knows more about the genre than this author does. As a University Prof, I have used this book in the classroom to demonstrate that being in print "doesn't make it so."
William Freeman
Pure Trash.......2004-05-10
(...) There is scarcely a page that is free of factual error. There is even evidence of plaigarism, which, ironically, she plagiarized from an innacurate source. On the very few times she gets something right we can attribute it to the "broken clock syndrome," which tells us that even a broken clock is right twice a day. That is, the book is PURE TRASH.

Book Description
In 1934 Alcoa introduced a revolutionary new line of aluminum alloy giftware and domestic items designed by American pioneer industrial designer Lurelle Guild. Called Kensington Ware, these relatively expensive, slick, machine-age objects were in an unmistakenly Art Deco style with cast brass accents. They represent an important American contribution to modern design and decorative arts. The Kensington plant ceased production around 1970, and collectors have recently been scooping up these compelling objects in the antique and collectible markets. This is the first book to tell the Kensington story and identify, value, and illustrate the aluminum in 375 color, vintage, and black-and-white illustrations. It is a must for anyone interested in aluminum, Art Deco, and the machine-age in America.
Customer Reviews:
A full color guide to midcentury Kensington Aluminum.......1998-11-27
Softback, color, 158 pp, includes introduction, catalogue, bibliography, price guide, and index. This is a wonderfully photographed overview of the Kensington line of Art Deco and Machine Age style aluminum designed by Lurelle Guild.
The collector is provided with basic background historical and biographical information on the Kensington line, Lurelle Guild, and Alcoa. The real strength of this book lies in the lavish photographs of many Kensington pieces.
The book is incomplete in that many items are not pictured. While more complete guides are rumored to be in preparation, this book it is still the first and only guide to Kensington and an indispensible source of information for the art deco, machine age, and aluminum community.

A Phenomenal Job!.......1999-02-06
Bonita Campbell has done a phenomenal job. She has the gift of providing whatever needs to be said. i am amazed at the scope and accuracy of her work, and ma the good Lord bless her and the work she is doing.
Uniquely American Art Form.......1999-02-06
I wear the hats of both an artist, and a collector of decorative aluminum. As an artist, I am drawn to the Campbell book, because it represents the first fully researched history of the company that introduced this uniquely American art form. As a collector, I am delighted to find a work that gives me information to determine the provenance, including dating, of the Wendell August Forge artifacts.
An Essential Resource.......1999-02-06
A beautifully illustrated book showing countless vintage pieces of hand forged aluminum artwork of exceptional rarity. Comprehensive appendixes on trademark handstamp marks and dating clues allows collectors and dealers to date peices with considerable accuracy. This book is valuable to novice and experienced collectors, antique dealers, researchers and historians. It is destined to become an essential resource to anyone interested in decorative, architectural or hand hammered aluminum.
An invaluable book for anyone interested in aluminum.......1999-01-26
Finally, a well researched book that chronicles the Wendell August Forge, pioneers of hand forged decorative aluminum giftwares and architectural items. Not only does this book detail the incredible story of the Wendell August Forge but also gives much insight into other producers who had their beginnings with the forge. Artisans such as, Arthur Armour, James DePonceau and Arthur Palmer along with many others are briefly discussed also. Wendell August Forge: Seventy Five Years of Artistry in Metal is beautifully illustrated showing scores of wonderful pieces of hand forged aluminum items of both giftware and architectural nature. Appendices showing marks help to date pieces more accurately, making this book valuable to collectors, dealers and researchers. This book is extremely well written and is a joy to read. You will refer to it again and again!
Outstanding and informative book for every reader!.......1999-01-25
"Wendell August Forge: Seventy Five Years of Artistry in Metal," by Bonita Campbell, is a benchmark work. For dealers and collectors of decorative and hammered aluminum giftware, the book is noteworthy because it is well researched, well written and generously illustrated. Campbell skillfully relates in a readable narrative format, the history of this company and its place in the decorative aluminum industry that it founded. Moreover, Campbell's research also gives the reader information on company marks, motifs, and production styles, that makes it possible to date Wendell August Forge pieces. Collectors and dealers who know the provenance of a piece will always have advantage over those who do not. We can only hope that Campbell, as a noteworthy expert in this genre, will soon be publishing additional works about decorative aluminum.

Expert advice for any gardener in the lower midwest.......2002-07-04
This is a "must own" for every newer gardener in the lower midwest states, i.e., Kentucky, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, and Ohio. Even seasoned veterans will appreciate the information provided in this book. Originally, I had planned to use the library's copy, but when I started to bookmark every page, I realized that purchasing my own copy was the only reasonable and considerate option. Ms. Heilenman shares her hands-on experiences without flinching at the sometimes harsh realities of the weather, and she describes the plants that grow well, as well as those that have failed. Her dry humor, for example when noting her personnal failure with a plant that her colleges seem to grow with ease, is amusing. The book has only a few photographs (they are in color), but it did not deter me from making use of her advice. This is, as far as I know, one of the very first midwest regional gardening books, and it is still, in my opinion, one of the very best. The contents are straight forward, practical, and emanently readable. And considering the pricetag you can't do better!

Book Description
This book deals with the use of archaistic stylistic elements (i.e., those which revive or imitate features of Greek Archaic art) in free standing statuary dating from the second century B.C. to the third century A.C. The main objective of the study is to determine how the archaistic style was used, what prototypes were imitated, what subjects were represented, how the replicas of statue types were distributed, how these statues were displayed, and what prompted such stylistic anachronism. The introductory chapter deals with general problems of archaism in ancient art and the specific questions pertaining to statuary in the round. The body of material, nearly three hundred pieces in all, is organized by type on the basis of pose and garment arrangement. In a concluding chapter, evidence from the body of the study is collected and possible answers are suggested for the questions outlined above. This study contributes to the currently widespread scholarly interest in stylistic revivals (especially classicism and archaism) which occurred not only in Roman times, but in earlier and later periods as well.

Book Description
One of Australia's well-known chroniclers of the Second World War tells the devastating story of war from the insider's perspective. Based largely on Osmar White's own war diary and the articles he wrote as a war correspondent, this deeply personal account stands out among the vast literature on World War II. Selected among the best 100 articles in Australian journalism of the twentieth century, White's eloquent record of the climactic events in the final days of the Third Reich remains as fresh and timely as ever.
Customer Reviews:
CONFRONTING QUESTIONS FOR THEN - AND NOW.......2004-06-03
White's Conqueror's Road is particularly relevant now with the anniversary of the D Day landings bringing back to mind the allies' slog through Europe which White captures so well. He compels us to ask again why so many of those involved in the conflict behaved the way they did. More than that, he insinuates the question in our minds "have people changed, could these things happen again?" The book is timeless and disturbing; no wonder publication was refused for decades.
Courageous journalism.......2003-11-03
Brilliant, courageous and accurate reporting from the front line has been one of the great international contributions of Australian and New Zealand journalism, especially during World War ll. Osmar White, who reported from both the Pacific and Europe, was among the finest of the Anzacs who achieved global recognition as war correspondents. "Conquerors' Road" -- a first-persona account of the US Third Army's push to Berlin -- shows why he had such a high reputation. He brought the skills of a novelist (which he later became, in tandem with his work as a journalist) to his depiction of the horror and folly of war, whether he was describing Buchenwald concentratin camp or Herman Goering's trove of looted treasures. White was too experienced and intelligent to believe that complete objectivity was possible in journalism, but his subjectivity never slipped into bombast or sentimentality. His precise, vivid writing always allows you to distinguish between fact and his opinion and emotions. Much of this book was virtually written on the run, yet it is an important contribution to the history of the 20th century.
Timely Read.......2003-06-01
A well paced and interesting read. Conquerors Road is a gripping journey through events at the end of WW2. Importantly, many facets of war journalism are discussed, and this is extremely pertinent in the current political climate. To the younger reader such as myself it gives a great impression and sense of the time and events of WW2, and with this the reader can get a good perspective on the recent events in Iraq and especially issues around their reportage.
I really liked the flow of the book, which is understated and progressive - it was difficult to put down. The events unfold naturally, and the distance between 1945 and the present is greatly reduced.
There are some strong descriptions about conditions and the depravity which occured in the war, and these have a lasting impact. The book is an effective window to the past.
