There's no shortage of biographies available on Alexander the Great, but Peter Green's Alexander of Macedon is one of the finest. The prose is crisp and clear, and within a few pages readers become absorbed in the world that made Alexander, and then the story of how Alexander remade it. Green writes, "Alexander's true genius was as a field-commander: perhaps, taken all in all, the most incomparable general the world has ever seen. His gift for speed, improvisation, variety of strategy; his cool-headedness in a crisis; his ability to extract himself from the most impossible situations; his mastery of terrain; his psychological ability to penetrate the enemy's intentions--all these qualities place him at the very head of the Great Captains of history."

                        Book Description

Until recently, popular biographers and most scholars viewed Alexander the Great as a genius with a plan, a romantic figure pursuing his vision of a united world. His dream was at times characterized as a benevolent interest in the brotherhood of man, sometimes as a brute interest in the exercise of power. Green, a Cambridge-trained classicist who is also a novelist, portrays Alexander as both a complex personality and a single-minded general, a man capable of such diverse expediencies as patricide or the massacre of civilians. Green describes his Alexander as "not only the most brilliant (and ambitious) field commander in history, but also supremely indifferent to all those administrative excellences and idealistic yearnings foisted upon him by later generations, especially those who found the conqueror, tout court, a little hard upon their liberal sensibilities."
This biography begins not with one of the universally known incidents of Alexander's life, but with an account of his father, Philip of Macedonia, whose many-territoried empire was the first on the continent of Europe to have an effectively centralized government and military. What Philip and Macedonia had to offer, Alexander made his own, but Philip and Macedonia also made Alexander form an important context for understanding Alexander himself. Yet his origins and training do not fully explain the man. After he was named hegemon of the Hellenic League, many philosophers came to congratulate Alexander, but one was conspicuous by his absence: Diogenes the Cynic, an ascetic who lived in a clay tub. Piqued and curious, Alexander himself visited the philosopher, who, when asked if there was anything Alexander could do for him, made the famous reply, "Don't stand between me and the sun." Alexander's courtiers jeered, but Alexander silenced them: "If I were not Alexander, I would be Diogenes." This remark was as unexpected in Alexander as it would be in a modern leader.
For the general reader, the book, redolent with gritty details and fully aware of Alexander's darker side, offers a gripping tale of Alexander's career. Full backnotes, fourteen maps, and chronological and genealogical tables serve readers with more specialized interests.

1 out of 5 stars Exceedingly biased and unfair.......2007-05-21

I'm very disappointed with this book.
I was looking for some objective and critic biography but this book have an obvious agenda from page one: put down Alexander by any possible means.
For Mr Green every good or great thing Alexander is credited to had done is just propaganda or flattery.
He can even doubt the result of a great battle like Granicus because our sources are few and unreliable. For him it was a defeat hidden by propaganda, a theory he make up with nearly zero backup from the ancient sources.
But instead, he don't hesitate to follow without doubt every nasty detail some of this sources could give us about the bad acts of Alexander (the chapter about Cleitus assassination for example is pure gossipy).
For me, thats not an historian...
                        A shame...

3 out of 5 stars Not for the average Joe/Jane.......2007-03-06

It's obvious Mr. Green knows his stuff but I feel this was written for a few of his peers and not the average reader. He tends to explain why he thinks what he thinks, and why others might be wrong or right, or whether new research challenges long held beliefs, etc. which is fine when chatting with your pals who are also well versed in the subject but better left to an appendix in a book as it stems the narrative flow. Please just tell me what happened, tell me why you think so later. I trust you. More than once I found myself at the bottom of the page having to reread it because my mind began to wonder.
The author assumes the reader is an academic like himself and peppers the book with phrases like, "The truth of the matter can never be known for certain. If we apply the cui bono principle, then Alexander undoubtedly had everything to gain..." and "De l'audace, toujours de l'audace, encore de l'audace: all through his life this was to be Alexander's guiding star, ..." and so on.
This in not a friendly book for commuters or people who like to read before bed. The chapters range from 30-60 pages a piece so every time you pick it up you're making a commitment. One personal annoyance is that, when referring to something he has already touched upon, the author has the bad habit of saying (see above pg. 47) or (see above pg 123) It paints a picture of him editing it on his computer, why not just say see pg. 47 or pg. 123 why the "above"?
Academics and those already familiar with the subject may enjoy the book, History Channel historians who saw a cool special on Alexander and want to learn more may want to look elsewhere.

                        5 out of 5 stars Well-written........2007-01-14

Green gives the reader a well-written and detailed biography of Alexander the Great. Green is adept in his descriptions of Alexander's military strategies, with explict visual illustrations of each battle. Further, he explores the psychology of Alexander, without beating the "Oedipal Complex" to death. Of note, is his sympathetic portrayal of Olympias and Philip the II.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good but my goodness what a map mess!.......2006-07-17

Alexander of Macedon is excellent. Mr. Green gives us a many faceted Alexander, not the two dimensional man of popular histories and movies.

While not entirely a military history all the battles are given a full telling and here is where the book falls a bit, not in the writing but in the maps. This is a common failing found in many books of the type and I find it most prevalent in books published by universities. Mr. Green's book is an entertaining and worthwhile read however to make sense of the fighting, getting the proper military style maps of the battles would be a good pre-reading plan.

4 out of 5 stars A vivid portrait of Alexander.......2006-07-04

I'm not a scholar, I just wanted to learn about Alexander's life and this book does a thorough job of documenting it, based on what records, reliable or not, exits. Not much is known in detail about his childhood; however, his military exploits are delineated as well as can be. The author does not make the mistake of writing in a dry style of prose which would be easy to lapse into in classical history. I find this book to be a very easy, fascinating read. The maps should have been appendicized and there should have been a overall map of the macedonian territory. The one negative note, is that the author indicated he would need to do a revision based on new research that has occurred since the original publication; however, this new edition never came to light, leaving one thinking that maybe there's another book with more up-to-date information on Alexander.

Niall and Christine left their careers in New York City for a simpler, more authentic life in a cottage outside the tiny village of Kilmihil in County Clare.

                              3 out of 5 stars Irish Paperback.......2007-09-25

This book was interesting as I am married to an Irish woman and we travel to Ireland often. The descriptions of everyday life in Ireland are grand and are usually explained as compared to life in the states. It's not a very humourous book, but worth resding if you long for Ireland.

5 out of 5 stars I had to buy all four!.......2004-09-23

Before I knew it, I was done with this book and on-line ordering all three of Niall Williams' next books. Rather than just another quaint book about "the Irish", this book weaves a funny and entertaining story of two Americans trying to fit-in in rural west Ireland. From learning the customs to waiting to get a party-line phone, there was a smile on every page.

4 out of 5 stars Decent story of western Ireland.......2004-06-05

I am planning a trip to Ireland and always enjoy reading some books set in the place I am visiting. This story of a couple who moves to Ireland definitely gave a feel for the place. Both the material poverty but social richness.

5 out of 5 stars It took me back to County Clare.......2001-12-21

When I traveled to Ireland two years ago and felt like I'd "come home" from the beautiful scenery (I never knew there could be *that* many shades of green) to the friendly people, to the rather mystical appearance of a Dolmen-shaped cloud in the sky just after we had viewed Dolmen in north County Clare, the experience was one I will not only never forget but hope to repeat sometime soon. During this time it was County Clare which spoke to me most of all.

Niall Williams, born in Dublin and Christine Breen, from New York, have left their Manhattan home to move to County Clare and into the cottage where Chris's grandfather was born. The struggles and triumphs of their first year are engagingly told in this wonderful little book. I was able to be transported back to the rural west of Ireland I learned to love in just a few short days.

In leaving their jobs and friends in Manhattan, Niall and Chris took a very big risk. To go to a place with no central heating, a telephone out of the early 20th C., and to one of the wettest summers on record took real courage. They quickly fit right in with their neighbors and by the time they host a New Years Eve party they are definitely one of "them."

If you're an armchair traveler, someone who's visited the Emerald Isle, or just hope to someday, this is a story to cherish. I have also now read their book of travel essays and am awaiting arrival of their other two books which I have recently ordered.

Although I am too old to do what Niall and Chris have done, it's great to live vicariously through them! Well done!

3 out of 5 stars Charming and well written, but ..........2001-10-23

This is a beautifully written book, full of charming stories and vivid descriptions (as one might expect from a writer/artist team), and the story of their bumpy and circuitous settling-in process on a farm in rural Co. Clare is well told. However, I found the book irritating and didn't even finish it. I had expected to like it, as I've traveled in that part of Ireland (I have roots in Co. Mayo) and enjoyed it immensely, so I was surprised by my negative reaction. After some thought, I realized why I felt that way: the authors came to Co. Clare with clearly defined expectations about why they were going there and what their life there would be like. So, from Day One, they were continually measuring the reality against those (understandably optimistic) expectations and finding it wanting. As a veteran of many moves, including a trans-Atlantic one, I feel that this is the completely wrong approach to starting life in a new place. If you come with an open mind, take the place and the people on their own terms, and learn how to find what you want within those parameters, you'll enjoy your new life much more. (And, often, you'll find that the place has pleasant surprises you didn't even know to look for until you'd been there a while.) The book is still worth reading for the descriptions, but an expatriates' guide it's definitely not.

                                                        Book Description

Awakenings is a sequel to Broken Mirror. A collection of ten true short stories about drug abuse. They serve as a wake-up call. Drug addiction is a social cancer but it can be beaten. The courageous people and their stories of titanic struggles in this book are living proof that drug addiction and its devastating effects never has to break another spirit or take another life. Some of the stories might seem sordid. But don't look away. Instead, open the window to the possibility of change, and, like them, embrace with open arms the indomitable human will.

For anyone involved in advertising of MarCom this book gives very practical advice. Overall very impressive and a good read for anyone involved in sales, advertising or marketing functions. Somehow contents required update and technologies have impacted this so much. Another book I highly recommended is 60-Minute Brand Strategist by Idris Mootee. This book is LOADED with solid, meaty real world branding insights and techniques that can are being kept as trade secrets. You will probably find this book a real eye opener. If you're looking for a more balanced marketing book, suggest going for David Aaker's books, some Kotler's books.

If you thought marketing was all about radio/TV/print advertising, this book will open your eyes. My copy if highlighted and dog-eared more than any book on my shelves. I refer to it more than my dictionary! The advice is practical and applicable across industries. If you aren't marketing this way, you should be, because your competitors will be!

I am a grad student at Northwestern majoring in Integrated Marketing Communications and have been fortunate to have Don Schultz as a professor. The insights provided in this book are right on. This is the future trend of all marketing efforts. If a company can not identify its best customers and treat them well, the company is destined to fail. This book helps guide a company to long-term success revolving around a companies core asset--its customers. This new way of thinking does not revolve around products but rather managing customers in an integrated manner.

                                                            Book Description

Bill Dixon has refined a sonically unique pan-tonal language of trumpet playing. As a trumpeter, composer, educator, and theoretician, Bill Dixon has politically and musically influenced many phases of the development of Black music in the second half of the 20th century. This authoritative guide details information about the life and music of Bill Dixon. Bill Dixon comments throughout the text on the familiar and unfamiliar aspects of his career as it unfolds between performances and recordings. The recollections of those who have collaborated with Bill Dixon over the years supplement the thorough research here presented on the life and career of Bill Dixon and subsequently, on the New York avant garde artistic sphere in which he worked. Music and music history scholars, especially those interested in jazz and Black music, will be attracted to the wealth of information provided, often from primary sources, on Bill Dixon and Black music through the 50s, 60s, and 70s. The discography included encompasses issued and non-issued recordings as well as listings for every known Bill Dixon performance. Collaborations with dancers, directors, filmmakers and painters, among others, are also documented.

A book for hard-core fans of Bill Dixon and for the serious scientist dealing with contemporary black music. It lists all known musical expressions of Bill Dixon, regardless whether they were recorded or are just "remembered". And Dixons musical production is vast, although his commercially available output is very moderate; Dixon maintains a comprehensive archive of his recordings since 30 years. Young's text does not interpret or analyze Dixon's music which he leaves for future authors. It is a pity that the book neglects Dixon's work as a visual artist (were he had his initial academic education) which is very consistent with his musical work.

My Great Grandmother wrote this book. When she wrote it, she was already old, had witnessed the births and deaths of many loved ones. English is not her second language. It is her 7th. To write such a book was an enormous accomplishment. See, you have to understand my grandmother. She was a story teller. I get my storytelling abilities from her. She spoke with a flavor of Yiddish in all her words, and she was the real thing, from the Old Country, all that. She had a sadness in her eyes that I couldn't get near. I was only seven when she died, but I remember her so well. Her fragile hands, painting the stories she told in wide brushstrokes across the room. Her love, coming through in her aging voice. This book is not just a story. It is MY story. It is HER story. It is, somehow, the story of us all, of humanity really. It is about strength, and courage. It is about letting go of the things you love so that the people you love can start over, unburdened. Read this book and imagine it being told to you, being spun in the air.
