Customer Reviews:
It's not a tour book.......2004-07-07
Although this book is packed with lots of information, it is not organized in a way that is helpful to some one (like me) who is planning a drive through the Hudson Valley.
Information on a given location is scattered through several chapters making it difficult to find places one would like to visit.
For example, let's say you are passing through Red Hook and would like to know what's worth doing there. You have to consult five separate chapters on Lodging, Food, Arts, Mansions, and Shopping and look for Red Hook in each of these.
For the traveler, it would be much better to have all this info collected under each location.
This is an excellent reference book, but if you are planning a trip, find a tour book which has the info organized by locations.
Girft for husband became gift to me!.......2003-08-05
I bought the book as a gift for my husband as he has wanted to explore the region. It turned out to be a gift to me as he was so inspired by Ms. Kanter's vivid descriptions he has planned a romantic long weekend get away.
Husband planned a romantic weekend.......2003-08-04
I'm thrilled. I bought the book and gave it to my husband as he has wanted to explore the region. He enjoyed Ms. Kanter's vivid descriptions and got inspired. He has planned a romantic long weekend.
Hats Off for This Hudson Guide.......2003-07-16
I love the Hudson Valley--from West Point's bastion of training young military leadership to Hyde Park's memorial to Franklin D. and Eleanor Roosevelt to Poughkeepsie's CIA--that's the Culinary Institute of America, famous for scrumptious dinners. Ms. Kanter obviously loves the Valley, too, for it shows in her excellent research and writing. I highly recommend it for anyone who yearns to visit this lovely part of upstate New York. Wake up, Rip Van Winkle!
The Hudson Valley - a treasure trove.......2003-06-20
Travel's best kept secret is exposed: the Hudson River Valley. Evelyn Kanter has written a wonderful, concise guide to this beautiful and historically significant region. I should know. I live here. Her book has even enlightened me. The book is factual and full of terrific snippets of information. I'm going to keep it in my glove compartment for my lazy day trips around the valley. This book is a great reference for Heritage travel visitors and locals. It's an invitation to see, firsthand, where American history gained its foothold.

Excellent-definitely worth a look!.......1998-11-06
After reading this book I wanted to find out more about the art of designing club flyers. I especially liked the work Nicola Ackland-Snow had done herself, and I admire this work...well done Nicola, Nathan and Steven!
I'm no artist, but this took art to a new level.......1998-04-18
I am, in fact, Nicola Ackland-Snow's sister, and you may think that because of this, my review would be biased, but in fact I thought it was amazing. I'm not an artist, actually, I'm useless, unlike Nicola, but this book provided a different perspective to this kind of art. I really liked it!

A perfect introduction for the beginning bibliophile........2001-02-26
A wonderful book for the novice bibliophile. This slim (87 pp.) volume is a relaxing and enjoyable afternoon's read. It mixes helpful hints on how to read dealer's listings with snippets of historical lore and suggestions for must-have reference books. I learned that 8vo in a dealer listing referred to the dimensions of the book (not the number of volumes), that the pulp that formed the basis for early European paper came from recycled underwear, that the reference book I was just outbid on on Ebay was one that I really DO want in my library and more. Two things sum up my reaction to this book: a immediate desire upon finishing the book to write the author and tell him how much I enjoyed reading it; and the feeling of kinship I had when I read one of the included quotes - one that I want on my tombstone when the time should come.
"I have always imagined that Paradise will be a sort of library." -Jorge Luis Borges

Book Description
In 1970, Stephen King embarked on what would become the crowning achievement in his literary career-the Dark Tower. The seven-volume series, written and published over a period of 30 years, was inspired by Robert Browning's poem "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came," as well as J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, and the spaghetti Westerns of Sergio Leone.
With the full cooperation of Stephen King himself, The Road to the Dark Tower examines the epic journey of the author to complete a story that threatened to overwhelm him. In this indispensable companion, Bev Vincent presents a book-by-book analysis of each volume in the series, tracing the Dark Tower's connections to King's other novels including The Stand, Insomnia, and Hearts in Atlantis, and offering insights from the author about the creative process involved in crafting his lifelong work-a work that has consumed not only Stephen King, but his legion of devoted readers. This is essential reading for any Dark Tower-or Stephen King-fan.

Customer Reviews:
Good guide to the Tower.......2007-05-03
I think that this book was interesting. You had everything at your fingertips if you wanted to look something up. I understand why a few people would be dissapointed because it doesnt dive too deep into the story. An interview with King would have been pretty cool, I will admit. Oh well...I still found the book pretty interesting.
Great for those fans that are completely lost but..........2006-07-07
... for those with any intelligence what so ever a pointless read. Vincent points out all of the obvious connections to Kings other works. There was no interview with the author to speak of... There was no new insight into the characters or about the worlds. Disappointing through and through.
Must Have For Dark Tower Fans.......2006-04-28
It's taken years and seven books but we have finally finished our quest for the Dark Tower. Now, we have this book to help us make sense of the journey. There is a love for the story that Bev brings to this book that many of us can empathize with. Bev's information, especially when discussing influences, is a very helpful adjunct to the series. There are bios of the characters, also a big help in keeping things straight. The poem which inspired it all (Childe Roland To The Dark Tower Came) is wonderful to have.
Bev knows his topic very well and brings this knowledge to all of us. Another trip to the Tower will be in order once you have this guide at your side.
Worth reading, but frustrating at times.......2006-01-25
Being a huge fan of The Dark Tower books, I bought this book with high expectations, hoping to gain more prespective on Roland's quest and what it all might actually mean. What I actually got was a book that was very heavy on summary and rather short of actual literary analysis.
This book reads like something I would have written in high school as a thesis paper for AP English. It's very obvious that Vincent is trying to prove a point, but he offers the same evidence over and over to illustrate said theory (I don't want to include details, just in case someone reading this hasn't actually read the Dark Tower series). A great deal of the footnotes offer pointless observaions and connections that have little, if anything at all, to do with the story. On the other hand, Vincent glosses over other connections, or fails to emphasize their importance. There's very little mention of the poem that inspired King to write the series, Robert Browning's "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came." He mentions it only when the books themselves make reference to it. The section of the book devoted to character analysis was thorough, although it does not offer anything readers cannnot discern for themselves while reading the series.
For all of the books faults, though, it was still an entertaining read. I enjoyed travelling back to Gilead, the Tower, and everywhere inbetween from a more scholarly point of view. For some reason, King's work transcends what I felt to be the amateur analysis of Vincent, and still makes this book worth delving into.
As a side note, perhaps if I hadn't been so excited to read it, it would not have been such of a let-down for me. It's definitley more of a companion read - a way to answer any unanswered questions you may have about the series, rather than an attempt to analyze what it actually means.
Helpful, but..........2005-05-23
First off, I haven't finished reading this book, but there are a few errors that I feel the need to point out.
First--I sat with my copy of Drawing of the Three and could not find the man in black disappearing into any doorway--perhaps this happens in one of the later books. If so, a footnote to that fact would have been nice.
Secondly--The author of this work neglects to mention obvious connections between the Dark Tower books and other works of literature. A discussion of Eliot's The Waste Land would have been interesting and possibly invaluable, especially considering both King and Eliot use Tarot cards and play fast and loose with Aurthurian legend. At least a mention of the fact that Rhea of Coos is the witch of coos as a nod to the Robert Frost poem of the same name should have been in order.
All this being said, I have appreciated the author's attempt to bring all of King's writings regarding the Dark Tower together... an inspired work.
Overall, A few quibbles that only an English professor would complain about...
Book Description
Here is Oscar Wilde revealed in his own words--including more than 200 previously unpublished letters--available to coincide with the one hundredth anniversary of his death
Deliciously wicked, astoundingly clever, and often outright shocking, Oscar Wilde put his art into his work and his genius into his life. In this collection, replete with newly discovered letters, the full extent of that genius is unveiled.
Charting his life from his Irish upbringing to fame in his fin de siècle London to infamy and exile in Paris, the letters--written between 1875 and 1900 to publishers and fans, friends and lovers, enemies and adversaries--resound with Wilde's wit, brilliance, and humanity. Wilde's grandson, Merlin Holland, and Rupert Hart-Davis have produced a provocative and revealing self-portrait.
Wilde's reputation as a serious thinker, humorous writer, and gay icon continues to flourish. The Complete Letters is an intimate exploration of his life and thoughts--Wilde in his own words.
Customer Reviews:
Wilde speaking for himself.......2002-05-01
This book is an absolue delight, a most wonderful portrait of one of the most interesting figures in history. When people think of Oscar Wilde, they think scandals and love affairs. Wilde has most certainly been made into a larger than life character. This book humanizes Wilde, gives him a chance to speak for himself, to show what he really was. His business corrospondnce, letters to his children, these simple writings from his everyday life show a sign of Wilde that people do not think about. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
The not so "Wilde" writings of Oscar..........2001-01-17
As one of those people who has always found Oscar Wilde an interesting and inscrutable character I had great expectations and an insatiable desire to finally peruse the epistolary output of this remarkable man. Sadly and I will add through no fault of the editors of this opus this compilation will probably leave most readers still searching for insight. Many of these letters (if not the majority) deal with very mundane issues (e.g. business arrangements, inquiries to publishers, very conventional thank you notes and in the post-gaol notes a good number of entreaties for money). Of course this book does contain De Profundis which does present some fascinating insights about the way his mind was functioning during his incarceration as well as the great indignities attendant with this. I would still recommend this to the diehard Wilde fanatic but to the novice would recommend a good standard biography (Ellman's for example).
WILDE with delight!.......2000-12-18
Though Mr. Wilde is indeed dead, his memory and writing is still with us. With this new book, "THE COMPLETE LETTERS OF OSCAR WILDE" you get a total new insiders glance on Oscar Wilde and his life. If you are a fan of Oscar Wilde, merely just heard of him, or a fan of literature, this is a must-have!
