Really Detailed Travel Info.......2000-07-12
This book makes me want to travel to the Canary Islands after cancelling one trip for lack of interest, and even venture off Tenerife to try a couple of the other islands. This is a winner. From Accomodations to Youth Hostels (there aren't any at present) and point by point, this is the book to buy. Each island is detailed for you to decide if it's worth a separate trip. Where to go - what to do - eating out - travel tips - and Berlitz"s language aids.

Lightweight in every sense - but no disappointment.......2003-08-22
Berlitz guides are not what you may call heavy-duty full-scale guides. They are cheaper - and also thinner on research, sticking to simpler matters and giving just a quick glance at the area. If you do not have excessive expectations, this book will not disappoint you.
Berlitz Costa Dorada is very good for a holiday-maker who will be spending most of the time on the beach and will keep cultural exploration as a firm second priority. For these travellers, a big and substantial guide (such as any thick book covering Catalonia) would not represent ideal value for money.
I found most details accurate and writing readable if uninspired. Again, you cannot judge this book by applying standards of a full-budget travel guide. Photographs are good, and some descriptions are in fact very honest compared to bigger brothers who often try to be too vague trying not to offend anyone.

As a collection of four groups of seldom-seen sketches by Willem de Kooning, this book succeeds in showing another side of the artist most often recognized for his abstract expressionism in the 1940s. Created more recently during a period ranging from the late 1950s to the early 1980s, the collection predominantly exhibits his dexterity with raw charcoal and ink, though the last group highlights his subtle color techniques. In a hardbound binding, the collected works are preserved on pages with superior quality and unified design. An informative introductory essay provides deeper insight into the artist and his work. Perhaps the strongest group includes the rudimentary sketches of a nude in "Drawings with Eyes Closed" as well as the harrowing and compelling images in the "Crucifixion Drawings." In a style typical of abstract expressionism, these later pieces continue to show that de Kooning was interested in capturing the fluid energy and gestures of changing forms, without any intent to stabilize or focus. Willem de Kooning (1904-1997) regularly created series of drawings, sometimes continuing them intermittently over a decade. Despite de Koonings renown as a painter and draftsman, there have been no publications to look at selected groups of his drawings in depth. This book, and the traveling exhibition organized by The Drawing Center, New York, presents four of his drawing series, affording a closer view of de Koonings working process and his constant reinvention of mark-making.
The earliest series to be included, Folded Shirt on Laundry Paper, 1958, is figured by a calligraphic spareness and openness that lays bare a panoply of mark-making possibilities with brush and ink. The second series are twenty-four drawings from 1966 which the artist created with eyes closed. These works make clear just how totally interdependent de Koonings memory and drawing hand were. But for their documentation, they are indistinguishable from his drawings made with eyes open. Several of the drawings are of the Crucifixion, and this subject, unique for de Kooning, comprises the third group of drawings executed in the mid- and late-1960s. These drawings take fullest advantage of charcoals lush flexibility. The fourth group, almost never seen, is comprised of tracings made on large sheets of vellum of painting configurations that might be employed in subsequent works. Done from the late-1960s through the 1970s, these double-sided drawings are made startlingly complete by de Koonings subsequent improvisations added to them.
Each series will be discussed in relation to the artists contemporaneous painting and will explicate his constantly changing but interrelated means. No other artist of his generation produced drawings so regularly and so superbly. Drawing is the crucible of de Koonings art.

The Ford that Beat Ferrari: A Racing History of the GT40.......2007-08-23
This is a good book, but not a great book. I own several other books by the author, John Allen, on similar subjects and there is a definite bias towards a british view of the subject. I have read about every book available about the mid-sixties era of racing, especially the Ford contribuiton. Although I feel very knowledgeable on the subject, this book still filled in many empty areas I have on the subject and did it in a fairly enjoyable fashion. Having already stated I own many books on this subject I still am happy that I purchased this one. It is one of the better books on this subject. Enjoy
If you are going to buy a book on the GT40, this should be the one........2006-12-20
There are a couple of other great books on the GT40, but this one has some of the best period photographs along with its well written text. Other books also spend a lot of time covering the 1966 LeMans MK11s and the Gulf liveried LeMans winners of '68 and '69. This book does cover them as they are historically important cars, but the privateers like Comstock and Scuderia Bear are also covered.
Chapters cover construction and testing, races such as LeMans, Sebring, Daytona, and the many private GT40 teams and cars.
This book should be on every racing enthusiasts shelf.
Porscshephile GT40 fan.......2006-02-17
The book in question..."The Ford That Beat Ferrari: A Racing History" turns out to be exactly that...as well as all that was implied by by Amazon's outstanding website. I know that this sounds like a " so what " statement, but it's not. I find most things do not live up to thier hype. So, when something does, it IS note-worthy.
As a side-bar, I am not your usual Ford fan. I am a die-hard Porsche nut...six real cars, hundreds of models and a complete library of all books ever written on the subject. So, why the deviation? Easy! It seems that a great many of the best drivers of Porsche race cars came over from Ford...and this fact provides me with yet another perspective. I highly recommend other Porschiphiles do the same. As Paul Harvey says, It just might give you " the rest of the story ".

Great Pictures by an "Insider".......2001-08-20
This book makes a great addition to anyone's GT40 collection. Friedman's pictures document not just the races, but a fair amount of the preparation necessary to get the cars in shape for competition.
As a pervious review mentioned, the coverage stops right after Ford's 1967 Le Mans win, thereby totally ignoring the JWA/Gulf era, but in all fairness, Shelby wasn't involved in those years. This is a book about the *Shelby* GT40 afterall.
I especially enjoyed some of the coverage of the GT40's competitors: Ferrari, Chapperal, and Porsche. This made the book just a little richer.
Ford's assault on Le Mans.......1999-09-19
I became a fan of the Ford GT's on a sunday morning in June of 1966. I was 13 years old. Up early before my parents I turn on the T.V. to try to find some cartoons and lo and behold there in living color is the 24 hours of Le Mans. I did'nt really know much about it though the name Le Mans did mean something to me. I was enthralled. As the Ford Mk.II's finished 1,2,3, I became a Ford fan forever. This book recaptures those days and Ford's epic assault on Le Mans in pictures and captions. From the beginning of the program to the all-american victory in 1967 by Dan Gurney and A. J. Foyt in the Mk.IV. My only complaint is that the book ends abruptly with that victory. Boom. But like the jacket says, "to take a look inside is to take a trip back in time." And what a time it was.

I purchased this book as a referance for building a model of this car. I found the book to be very helpful for that purpose and as an intersting book to read about Le Mans race cars. I would like to recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the world of racing.
I wish there was a better book.......2002-07-24
If this were a less expensive book the rating would go to 3-4 stars but compared to books of similar subject matter (Porsche 917: The Winning Formula) the photographs are not very good and the paper and printing process is at best mediocre. To add insult to injury, the book is more than "Porsche 917".
I purchased this book as reference for model building. It is some help in this respect. But the paucity of color photos and the poor resolution cause me to downrate this book.
A Fine Book -- More Context Would Be Nice.......2001-08-20
If I could wish for more, it would be more context. It would be nice to have seen some better coverage of races outside of Le Mans, and more coverage of the principal opponents. It's a little like looking at the world with GT40 tunnel vision. Of course I shouldn't complain too much, this is a comprehensive history of the GT40 afterall.

Memoir of a Journalist Career.......2007-02-06
Bob Schieffer who spent his life in journalism and was the anchor of 'Face the Nation'. He offers a behind-the-scenes account of his more than forty years in journalism, including coverage of the White House, the Pentagon, the State Department, and Capitol Hill. Mr. Schieffer also discusses his reporting of Kennedy's assassination, the civil rights movement, Vietnam, Watergate and September 11, 2001.
You can tell that he enjoyed his career as a journalist and seems to be honest in his recollection of his career. And his brushes with those he interacted with. Though he does name drop and seem to let us know when ever fate favored him. Other then some of the few self-serving statements on his personal life and social climbing, his anecdotes are still worth reading. Even though he seems to never have met a person he didn't like. Do not expect to learn anything new, but it will jog your memory of many familiar events.

I enjoyed this book because it gave an insider's perspective on many of the most important news stories of my lifetime. Having worked for a CBS affiliate in the early 80s, it brought back many memories. But what I took away was a sense of Bob Schieffer's genuine, unflashy but solid character. I've never met him, but I watched his work over the years as the "backup" anchor for CBS News. Stars have come and gone, but he has always handled that duty with quiet grace. He was never one to grand-stand, to wax with righteous indignation or pomposity. He's never tried a special sweater or a silly signoff (remember "Courage"?) to boost his ratings. I'll bet he never even owned a blow dryer. Just did his job, said his piece, bringing hard work and common sense to the task. To me, this book was a heartening reminder that the basics really can pay off in the long run.

Bob Schieffer is not only an outstanding reporter and anchor but an excellent story teller as well. His accounts of the history he has seen make the reader feel a part of the story. Highly recommended to anybody interested in knowing more about the stories that have shaped our lives.
Stories Of His Career.......2005-04-17
Schieffer just tells stories of his life in a fun way. He has loved his career as a journalist. He tells stories of Walter Cronkite, Barbara Walters, Jimmy Carter, Shah of Iran, the Kennedy assasination, and other stories of years past. He has covered many big stories in his life including Vietnam in the past and 9/11 in more recent times. He recently did the Presidential debate in 2004.

Wonderful photo tribute to "The Big Fellow"!.......2005-04-22
Ever since I saw the outstanding 1996 Neil Jordan film "Michael Collins", I have been fascinated in the story of Collins and the violent early years of the IRA. This excellent pictorial history gives a brief but concise summary of his life, along with dozens of extraordinary and rare photos. From his growing up in West Cork, Ireland, to his tragic death at the age of 31, this book explains his amazing life in a simple, straightforward way that will please both experienced Irish history buffs and "rookies" who're looking for a good place to start.
What I find most tragic about Collins is that after years of fighting the British to achieve Irish independence, he was ambushed and killed by his own countrymen during the Irish Civil War of 1922. There are photos of his fiancee Kitty Kiernan, his best friend Harry Boland, and various IRA associates, and of course photos of his enemies, both Irish and British. There's a particularly chilling photo an R.I.C. Constable alongside two Auxiliaries (known for their brutal methods), all with evil grins and guns drawn. This book is an absolute must for any Irish history buff!
A Pictorial Guide to Ireland's Most Charismatic Hero.......2000-07-07
For anyone interested in getting to know more about Michael Collins and Ireland's finally successful struggle for freedom from Britain, this book is an excellent, easily read introduction. It depicts in words and photos a terrible and critically important period in Irish history and introduces the reader to one of the most fascinating and compelling figures in that history or any other. Highly recommended.

Everyone has heard the cliche "A picture's worth a thousand words" and Connolly proves it is true. History comes to life beautifully as the reader is enveloped in headlines, photos, drawings and letters of the time. As well as eye candy, The Illustrated Life of Michael Collins provides an accurate, easy-to-read biography and a palatable political analysis. Unlike some other historical profiles, Connolly stays away from melodrama and hero worship, telling the facts as they were and leaving the observer to make his own choices. A worthwhile purchase for anyone interested in Michael Collins and/or Irish history.

...a little behind the times and anthropocentric. These failings are admitted in the book, however, and do not much detract from its being a useful work.

I think this is a great book. It has a lot of interesting material, but it's also very readable. I consider it an intermediate level book. It doesn't require any previous knowledge, but there is a lot of material and it sometimes comes quite fast. Some of the material is more complex than one usually finds in popular science books, but it is usually put is boxes separate from the main text.
The book opens up with some introductory material. It's pretty standard: geological time, continental drift, fossils and a high level view of the tree of life. The book is biased towards the evolution that lead to humans, but this bias is explained in the introduction.
The books starts at the beginning, explaining why carbon is essential to life as we know it, describing prokaryotes, describing eukaryotes and it looks at what we know about pre-Cambrian life. Then it moves on to the Cambrian explosion, fish, tetrapods, amphibians, reptiles, dinosaurs, mammals and humans. A lot of very interesting material is presented, a small sample would be: cyanobacteria and the increase in atmospheric oxygen levels, the evolution of legs from fins, biomechanics, mass extinctions and molecular clocks.
I think this book would appeal to a wide range of people. Obviously the amount of material available for a book like this is enormous. So the challenge of an author/editor is deciding what to include and what to leave out. I think this book had a very nice selection. Most of the material is accessible. There is more challenging material and although it adds a lot to the book, even most of this could be skipped without hindering comprehension of the remaining material. I also thought the illustrations were very good. The amount of material is impressive, as is the clarity (in general) of the writing.
Good but not great........2006-03-08
The Book of Life, an illustrated history of the evolution of life on Earth, edited by Stephen Jay Gould is a great gift for any natural history fan.
Chapter after chapter about the evolution of fish, dinosaurs, mammals and mankind by such greats as Peter Andrews, Christine Jones and Michael Benton. How did fish develop and make it to land? Why did mammals do so well after the dinosaurs died? And the illustrations, alone, are worth the price of the book.
Of course most of the questions can't be answered but just exploring the issues and topics is fun. Thinking is good for you and this book plugs into many of my other natural history interests allowing me to have a foundation, a background, before diving into the more advanced books on the same subjects.
True, being first published in 1993 and updated in 2001, means that the information is slightly outdated. For example, we DO know what a dinosaur heart looks like and we DO have soft tissue from a T-Rex bone. Also, they seem to be linking Homo ergaster to Homo habilis while all the other books I have on human evolution seems to link H. ergaster to Homo erectus.
The book is good for any library, new or used, so go buy it.
The Greatest Story Ever Told.......2005-03-31
From the origin of life on Earth to its many incredible forms and huge setbacks (mass extinctions) up to the present day dominance of a very successful species of uber-ape, this book is fascinating reading. I did not find the subject matter difficult to understand and I am a relative novice, so I would recommend it to those who have not delved deeply into the topic before. Many concepts well known to the general public are given thorough treatment and add several layers of knowledge onto what the reader may be starting off with. For instance, the section dealing with the most famous mass extinction, the demise of the dinosaurs, is not only a thorough look at all the possible causes of the event itself, but also a critique of the theorizing that has resulted in the common belief that the cause was primarily extraterrestial. One comes away with not only a better understanding for the possible causes, but also a better appreciation of scientific research and debate that leads up to theories being proposed and eventually accepted or rejected. The illustrations are excellent for the most part, and include many very informative diagrams. One of my favorites is the one showing how some species of fish evolved legs from their fins, allowing purely aquatic animals to begin the move onto land. All in all, this book is essential reading to anyone interested in the topic, and I highly recommend it.
A good synthesis,a bit outdated at times.......2002-01-30
You would have expected more time and detail to the ermergence of the nervous system and the Cambrian Explosion. A more up-to-date section on human evolution (no mention of Ardipithecus Ramidus) but on the whole the book is a good synthesis of the state of the knowledge in this field.
