A must read for individuals in the agriculture business.......1997-07-29
This book should be considered standard reference for individuals who make agricultural decisions based on laboratory analysis.
The Plant Analysis Handbook provides comprehensive and understandable insight as to the individual elements and there relation to proper crop development, and it relates this information to the analysis and its apropriate use as a tool for intuitive and informed decition making.

Mercy Watson to the Rescue
To Mr. & Mrs. Watson, Mercy is not just a pig–she's a porcine wonder. And to the portly and good-natured Mercy, the Watson's are an excellent source of buttered toast, no to mention that buttery-toast feeling she gets when she snuggles in to bed with them. This is not, however so good for the Watsons' bed. BOOM! CRACK! Welcome to the wry and endearing world of Mercy Watson. [18:50 minutes]
Mercy Watson Goes for a Ride
Mr. and Mrs. Watson's porcine wonder, Mercy, loves nothing more than a ride in the car. It takes a fair amount of nudging and bribing and a "You are such a good sport, darling" to get the portly pig out of the driver's seat, but once the convertible is on the road, Mercy loves the feel of the wind tickling her ears and the sun on her snout. [22:58 minutes]

One word....WOW! Maybe another word...Fantastic!.......2002-10-02
Oh yeahhh...this one kept me reading late into the night, but I didn't care...couldn't stop. The characters are wonderful, the story realistic and gripping. But most of all the relationship between the hero and heroine, and how they both grew so convincingly within the pages of a small book...this only illustrates the talent of the author, and why she is about the only name left on my "buy all her books" list. I haven't read a Silhouette Desire in some time, but this one may lure me back to the line. A great read. Highly recommended.

These books are O.K................1998-12-31
i like these books, but come on, I mean I am just as old as the girls in the book, and i am way more mature than they are. i think that this book should have a more mature content, instead of being so timid and babyish!! Make it like Andie's attitide( saucy, bouncy, some times irritable) but still the series is good, and I like it.

Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A550543. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Outsourcing is one method the Department of Defense is actively pursuing in order to cut costs and fund its planned modernization. This thesis investigates the question of whether the U.S. Navy should outsource the SAR mission at Naval Air Stations. The overarching question of whether or not SAR is an "inherently governmental" function was considered as was the alternative possibility of competition, if it were a "commercial" function. This thesis is designed to complement other ongoing analyses by concentrating on the non-direct cost issues. A direct cost analysis of this outsourcing initiative is not conducted in this thesis. This thesis, therefore, examines the gross benefits received by the U.S. Navy as a result of the SAR mission at Naval Air Stations. These benefits were categorized for analysis as personnel rotation-base, personnel experience-base, mission related and public related. A Decision Support System Generator using the Analytical Hierarchy Process was introduced in the study as an experimental methodology for evaluating the benefits received by the Navy. Consistent results were obtained from two separate groups and insights were obtained for future improvements in these experimental techniques. There is also a discussion of how the Analytical Hierarchy Process might be extended to evaluate net benefits (that is, benefits minus costs) to the Navy.

Close to 100 figurative drawings in black and white, and in color, mostly nudes in love or strife, some "disastered by life," some with incisive or caustic words integrated in the images. This is a retrospective of Ferlinghetti's graphic work and play, ranging from his early drawings made in Paris ateliers, to yesterday's sessions sketching models in his San Francisco studio.
Lawrence Ferlinghetti, poet and founder of City Lights Books, author of A Coney Island of the Mind and Pictures of the Gone World, among numerous other books, has been drawing from life since his student days in Paris where he frequented the Academie Julien and where he did his first oil painting.

"Everything works in this book — the informative yet humorous writing, the not-too-scary illustrations, and a superb layout that employs multisized text and bright color backgrounds to great effect." —THE HORN BOOK
"SHAAAARRRKK!" That's probably the last word anyone wants to hear while swimming in the warm blue sea. But most sharks aren't at all what people expect. In fact, those who think all sharks are giant, man-eating killers are in for a surprise. The compelling narrative, colorful illustrations, and captivating facts in SURPRISING SHARKS reveal that sharks come in all shapes and sizes — and probably should be more afraid of humans than we are of them.
Customer Reviews:
My four year old LOVES it.......2007-07-31
Since our first reading, my four year old daughter loves this book. She giggles at the humor and Nicola Davies wonderful use of her craft. A wonderful literary non-fiction choice.
A Fun Shark Book! .......2005-03-07
This book is great for kids who love sharks. It is sassy, funny and breezy. I recommend it.
Jaws ah-plenty.......2004-08-10
Word on the street (which is to say, librarian-based listservs) has it that the book "Surprising Sharks" is incredibly popular these days. Having heard that this book was flying from shelves across the country, garnering the love and respect of thousands of children every day, I thought I'd check it out myself. It's very rare that a non-fiction book becomes overwhelmingly accepted by kids. But when it happens, watch out! It might be all you can do to keep the l'il buggers from reading it day and night and day again.
The book is a clever look at the wide variety of sharks living in ocean waters today. From the tiny sixteen inch cookie-cutter shark (which wins my love on name alone) to the vast twenty-nine foot six inch basking shark, this book has `em all. It includes a variety of amusing factoids in its text, providing copious amounts of useful information. In a well drawn graphic section, the book examines the common properties that all sharks share, both inside and outside the body. Kids reading this book learn about the different parts of the shark and why they're so awfully dangerous. Most interestingly of all, the book makes it perfectly clear that while sharks do kill an average six people a year, people kill an average 100 MILLION sharks a year. The book finishes up with an index of all the sharks in the text (for kids' easy referencing) as well as a bit of shark history to boot.
I was a little sad that author Nicola Davies didn't give any space to a bibliography of sources kids could use to find out more about sharks and their ways. Still, that's small potatoes. Davies certainly seems to have plumbed every last bit of interesting information about sharks she could find. I mean, who knew that the gel-filled pits in a sharks nose detect the electrical messages in a prey's body? Or that latern sharks have light making organs that help them blend into the silvery surface of the water around them? News to me! Illustrator James Croft gives the book an easy-going cartoonish feel that doesn't particularly add much to the book, but neither does it detract. The book's brightly colored and amusing. Just not particularly original in that respect.
If you need a good non-fiction picture book that'll give some of the more scientifically minded kiddies the thrills they seek (and frankly, what kid isn't interested in man-eating animals with big nasty teeth?) "Surprising Sharks" is your best bet. It's not gory, but it'll certain give some kids the thrill of fear they seek in their non-fic lit. An enterprising and engaging book.

A must for West African historians who can't read Arabic.......2006-05-20
Even though I have the Arabic text on order Es sadi's "Tarikh Es Sudan" ("History of the Land of the Blacks") in English is a good resource for those don't read Arabic or French. For most people the book will be one of finding snippets here and there during historical research and the footnotes are a good help in connecting the history with other events to which they are linked. As another reviewer mentioned this is not exactly one of those books you read from cover to finish. You also have to adjust to having to use the notes quite a bit, but that is not the fault of John O. Hunwick, but is how the Tarikh es-Soudan is in Arabic. The book has good maps and supporting texts to add to the text. I would suggest that every person wanting to get a clear picture from West African and Arab sources about some of the events that led to the Songhay empire's rise and fall this is a goo resource for that.
Missing Link to West African History.......2003-10-28
Es sadi's "Tarikh Es Sudan" ("History of the Land of the Blacks") has obtained a legendary staus among those interested in African history. It was written after the fall of the Songhay Empire in the 1600s about the kings and events leading up to that event, and no English translations have been available until now, thanks to Dr. John O. Hunwick of Northwestern University.
The result is an interesting narrative with a cast of characters that include some familiar names to African history fans such as Mansa Musa, Sunni Ali (referred to in this book as "the tyrant"), Askia Muhammad, and the scholar Ahmed Baba, as well as many more obscure historical figues and events. (Surprisingly, Sundiata the original Lion King is only mentioned in passing in a footnote).
However, the casual reader with a beginning knowledge of Ancient Africna history should be warned that this is not for beginners or lay historians. Dr. Hunwick, in a noble effort to make this understandable, fills the text with footnotes and phonetic pronunciation of the Islamic names and concepts. Plus, the original language of the text is quite labored for the casual reader and while Dr. Hunwick tries with this, it's still a pretty rough read for the beginner.
For the avid African historian, this is great stuff which is filled new and important information. The layman may want to start with such things as the recent translation of Ibn Battuta's accounts of his travels in precolonial Africa or D.T. Niane's account of the Sundiata epic (as well as reading the Quaran) to get a feel for this kind of material before moving on to this. Also, it is important to know that the Islamic writers of that era (Middle Ages) were very ethnocentic and scornful of pre-Islamic African cultures, so be prepared for that kind of bias.
But with all that said, go for it. It's an extremely valuable piece of history.

Excellent Work - Well Worth the Price........2004-04-23
African History scholar John O. Hunwick deserves the utmost praise for this work. Do not let the price deter you, seriously, the volume is well worth the price and even more. Others familiar with the history of the Songhai Empire know that for the past hundred-plus years this 'golden' book could only be accessed by those who knew the original 16th-century classical Arabic, or the French and German translations from the 1800's. The Songhai Empire was amazing and here we as mankind are blessed to have Hunwick translate this all-important Songhai court document into English for the first time ever. Curious about the illustrious and powerful Askia dynasty, Songhai imperial orchestras, the unbeatable Songhai army, river navies, queens, and the never-ending trade of gold? This Songhai classic is a true work of art, an imperial court document that will astound the reader with its amazing detail of Songhai's legacy as the richest empire of Africa's Golden Age.
Brilliant Black African History!!!!.......2004-01-18
The Tarikh Al-Sudan,is one of the many compilations of Black African History. Written by a Black African scholar in the Arabic language, (which was much more widely used in that era than now), the author has done a good job.
The Dynasties, Scholars of the area, African ethnic groups, etc., are well covered. I think the "Tarikh Al-Fettah", should also be translated into English.
For those people in the world who still refuse to aknowledge Black African Civilizations, initiatives, and accomplishments, this is a good read.
Currently in Mali today there are 15 families that have preserved over 50,000 volumes of African History in that area. There is a current project underway to save these priceless materials. Contact info@Timbuktufoundation.org

Book Description
Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett wrote the screenplays for some of America’s most treasured movies, including It’s a Wonderful Life, The Thin Man, Easter Parade, Father of the Bride, Naughty Marietta, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Legendary films, indeed, but writing both the play and screenplay for The Diary of Anne Frank was their crowning achievement.
Controlled chaos best describes their writing method. They discussed a scene at length, sometimes acting it out. Afterwards, they each wrote a draft, which they exchanged. “Then,” Frances said, “began ‘free criticism’—which sometimes erupted into screaming matches.” Noisy and contentious, the method worked splendidly.
Enormously successful and remarkably prolific, Goodrich and Hackett began their thirty-four-year collaboration in 1928. Married after the first of their five plays became a hit, they were in many ways an unlikely pair. Frances, the privileged daughter of well-to-do parents, graduated from Vassar, then played minor parts on Broadway. Albert’s mother put him on stage at age five, when his father died, to help pay the bills, and he became a highly paid comedian.
The Hacketts were known for their wit and high spirits and the pleasure of their Bel Air dinner parties. They waged memorable battles with their powerful bosses and were key activists in the stressful creation of the Screen Writers Guild. Once they had created Nick and Nora Charles, The Thin Man’s bright, charming, sophisticated lead couple, played memorably by William Powell and Myrna Loy, many people saw a strong resemblance, and the Hacketts acknowledged that they “put themselves into” Nick and Nora.
The Real Nick and Nora is a dazzling assemblage of anecdotes featuring some of the most talented writers and the brightest lights of American stage and screen. The work was arduous, the parties luminous. On any given night the guests singing and acting out scripts at a party might include F. Scott Fitzgerald and Sheilah Graham, S. J. Perelman, Oscar Levant, Ogden Nash, Judy Garland, Abe Burrows, Hoagy Carmichael, Johnny Mercer, Ira Gershwin, George Burns and Gracie Allen, Pat O’Brien, Dick Powell and June Allyson, Dashiell Hammett, Lillian Hellman, James Cagney, and Dorothy Parker.
Customer Reviews:
Nutley NJ's most famous writer.......2005-03-28
In ''The Real Nick and Nora - Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, Writers of Stage and Screen Classics,'' author and Frances' nephew David L. Goodrich puts together a comprehensive and delightful portrait of his aunt and her husband and writing partner Albert Hackett.
The first play Frances and Albert worked on was something she had struggled on for a while and brought him in to finish off. A few years later, that play, ''Up Pops The Devil,'' was the first play produced by the Nutley Little Theatre on Nov. 23, 1934.
"The Real Nick and Nora" is filled with references to Nutley, N.J., and Frances' Nutley Avenue home. One photo in the front of the book shows ''Frances, in her teens, in the Nutley house - as usual, with a book.''
Born in Belleville, the Goodrich family moved to Nutley when she was two years old. She attended private school while she lived in town, then went Passaic Collegiate School, and then on to Vasser.
After graduating in 1912, Frances went into the theatre. While working in the theater in Northampton, Mass., Frances met actor William Powell - who later turned up in the Thin Man films.
Well, a lot happens to Frances between college graduation and writing screenplays in Hollywood for the Thin Man films, and many others.
Author David Goodrich takes his time developing the cross-relations and early kindnesses that led to life-long friendships with, among others, James Cagney. (Albert Hackett gave the young actor a ride in Hollywood - rather than leave him to wait for a bus.)
Frances met Bob Ames and married him in the Nutley Avenue house in 1917. That lasted six years. She married again, and though the wedding made the social pages, it didn't last.
It was with Albert Hackett, an actor and writer, that Frances life clicked for the best. The pair wrote plays, got married, and went to the new world of Hollywood to write the words for actors to say in the 'Talkies'.
The Hacketts wrote screenplays and plays for the next 30 years. They are best known for their work on the three Thin Man films staring Myrna Loy and William Powell.
The Hacketts, as Goodrich calls them, were the epitome of Nick and Nora. Frances had the refined taste for the good life and had grown up in Nutley with attending servants. Albert was the wise-cracking uncle every one would hang around at parties.
While writing the screenplays in their Hollywood studio office, passersby would hear the pair screaming and yelling at each other. Then the Hacketts would break for lunch and be as civil and chatty to each other as possible while away from their keyboard.
At the 'writers' table' at MGM and in Hollywood's Golden Age, they forged friendships with Ogden Nash, Dashiell Hammett, Dorothy Parker, F. Scott Fitzgerald and many others.
Later, when the Hacketts were well known, they were instrumental in establishing the Screen Writers Guild - to ensure fair treatment of writers in Hollywood. They stood up to the bigwigs, including Louis B. Mayer.
And the pair worked on Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life" but it wasn't a pleasant experience for even the seasoned Hollywood screenwriters.
The Hacketts' crowning achievement, and most-draining writing effort, was their work as playwrights on "The Diary of Anne Frank." For that work they won the Pulitzer Prize.
Frances, who never had any children, thought of Anne as hers. Albert predicted rightly, that whenever Frances was called upon to speak about the play, it would cause her to cry.
The exhaustive 300-plus pages of ''The Real Nick and Nora'' covers a pair of long, full lives, Frances died at 94, and Albert, ten years her junior, lived to be 95.
The Hacketts were such nice people, they often seemed out of place in the wilds of Hollywood in the 30s and 40s. Their kindness was often taken advantage of, but they were such nice people, who wouldn't want to be their friend?
The Hacketts certainly deserve the fine treatment in this comprehensive biography. They would be proud of the fine job their nephew did.
You Love Movies? Must Read.......2002-02-01
One of the finest books on Hollywood in recent years. Through the biographical prism of one of the most engaging, accomplished and loved couples in American screen and stage writing history, Goodrich captures the excitement and tears of movie production. A must read for movie lovers, the stage struck, aspiring writers, lovers of the Thin Man series, It's a Wonderful Life, Anne Frankf and mid-century cultural studies.
Book Description
John F. Sullivan was a polygraph examiner with the CIA for thirty-one years, during which time he conducted more tests than anyone in the history of the CIA's program. The lie detectors act as the Agency's gatekeepers, preventing foreign agents, unsuitable applicants, and employees guilty of misconduct from penetrating or harming the Agency. Here Sullivan describes his methods, emphasizing the importance of psychology and the examiners' skills in a successful polygraph program. Sullivan acknowledges that using the polygraph effectively is an art as much as a science, yet he convincingly argues that it remains a highly reliable screening device, more successful and less costly than the other primary method, background investigation. In the thousands of tests that Sullivan conducted, he discovered double agents, applicants with criminal backgrounds, and employee misconduct, including compromising affairs and the mishandling of classified information.
But Gatekeeper is more than Sullivan's memoirs. It is also a window to the often acrimonious and sometimes alarming internal politics of the CIA: the turf wars over resources, personnel, and mandate; the slow implementation of quality control; the aversion to risk-taking; and the overzealous pursuit of disqualifying information. In an age when the intelligence community's conduct is rightly being questioned, Sullivan contributes a fascinating personal account of one of the Agency's many important tasks.
Customer Reviews:
I was pleasantly surprised........2007-08-12
To say that I'm a skeptic of the accuracy of polygraph would be a gross understatement. I've read the research on polygraph or "lie detector" accuracy for about 30 years. My conclusion is in agreement with David Lykken's (1998) outstanding critical review of this literature in, "A Tremor in the Blood: Uses and abuses of the lie detector," as well as the conclusion of a thorough investigation by the National Academy of Sciences. Lykken, the Academy, and I agree that there is no credibile evidence for polygraph accuracy that stands up to scientific scutiny .
There is, of course, substantional anecedotal evidence, supplied by those who make their living administering the exam, and which these folks almost univerally claim counts as evidence for polygraph accuracy. It is evidence, of a sort, but very weak, in fact, essentially worthless evidence. It simply ain't science.
What a skilled polygrapher can sometimes do is use the machine as a prop, an aid to help elicit a confession. Mr. Sullivan's is the first book I've read by a polygrapher that acknowledges this latter point, at least implicitly. He also directly confronts some of the enormous damage that reliance on polygraph has caused - e.g., the Alrich Ames debacle. Ames was the CIA agent who sold millions of dollars of information to the Sovets, causing many moles (Soviet agents who were working for us) to lose their lives. Ames was ignored as a source of the leaks for about six years because he passed a series of polygraph exams.
Sullivan also provides fascinating insights into the CIA and FBA cultures vis a vis the polygraph, including the impact of the Ames case.
Although clearly pro-polygraph, Mr. Sullivan is not blindly so. His candor is often impressive. Unlike other books written by polygraphers, he appears to be less concerned with preaching pro-polygraph propaganda and more concerned with presenting a professional and balanced treatment. For me, his approach adds much to his credibility. The book is well written and I have no hesitation recommending it - although I recommend reading Lykken's brilliant book first.
Author John Sullivan was a polygraph examiner for over thirty years.......2007-07-07
Author John Sullivan was a polygraph examiner for over thirty years, conducting more such tests than anyone in the history of the CIA's program. What makes his story exceptional is his explanations of how lie detectors are used to identify unsuitable applicants, possible foreign agents, and others guilty of misconduct from harming the Agency. His methods, the psychology behind polygraph testing and results, and the tests which enabled Sullivan to uncover double agents, applicants with criminal backgrounds, and more makes for exciting case histories and also offers military libraries insights into the CIA's internal workings and quality control measures. An intriguing, unusual survey which moves beyond 'memoir' status to examine the foundations of CIA quality and strengths.
Credible discussion of utility of the polygraph.......2007-05-05
John Sullivan presents an insider's view of the utility of the polygraph and the applications where it is valid and where it is not. This is an art and not a science and false positives are common in the hands of intimidating operators. The writing style is a bit stiff and too detailed about CIA polygraphers and security officials but the overall work is a contribution to the literature of a topic that is often misunderstood.
This is good background for people seeking employment where a full polygraph is required.
Book Description
Often scathingly funny, frequently tender, and always completely engaging, The Gatekeeper is Terry Eagleton's memoirs, his deep-etched portraits of those who influenced him, either by example or by contrast: his father, headmasters, priests, and Cambridge dons. He was a shy, bookish, asthmatic boy keenly aware of social inferiority yet determined to make his intellectual way. The Gatekeeper mixes the soberly serious with the downright hilarious, skewer-sharp satire with unashamed fondness, the personal with the political. Most of it all it reveals a young man learning to reconcile oppositions: a double-edged portrait of the intellectual as a young man.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant in places.......2007-10-03
Eagleton's lengthy chapter on the Labour movement in Britain, although it does have touches of brilliant satire, is unlikely to be of as much interest to American readers as some of his other chapters in which he discusses Catholics in England or the anthropology of Oxbridge, for example. At his best, Eagleton is both funny and sharply insightful. And it is worth wading through the longueurs to find these places.
Engagingly told, yet detached and oblique.......2003-09-26
Eagleton's recent work finds him claiming the "professional Irishman" mantle, first in literary investigations, then satirical observations directed towards his once-removed, newly reclaimed homeland in "The Truth About the Irish," and now in this rather unrevealing memoir. True to the Hibernian stereotype, he talks your ear off for hours yet you come away dazzled by his wit...only realizing after your "intimate" conversation how little you've actually learned from your nimbly eloquent and now fleeting acquaintance.
I found his opening two chapters on Irish Catholicism the best, in which he balances fault-finding with sensitivity and compassion. His chapters on far-left politics and "losers" reveal not so much his own intellectual and political thoughts as his take on the wider community of thinkers, posers, and activists in all their idealism and philistinism both.
His mentor at Oxford proves in his student's eyes repelling and appealing, but the whole dislocation I presume Eagleton felt at Oxford here becomes refracted into some Wildean scene that, not having had the privileges Eagleton earned, I could not fully share. His recollections on the page seemed angled at those within the charmed circle, as those in the leftist campaigning, and if you're removed at a distance as I am, the detachment only grew as I read his entertaining but--in these latter sections--ultimately disengaged recollections.
Still, as with his literary and satirical work (seek out his novella "Saints and Sinners"), Eagleton's worth reading, for the energy of his mind and the enthusiasm of his intellect. You won't find much about his personal side here, but he does deliver what he wishes to share on the page, frankly and tersely.
Humour with a Point.......2003-08-23
Eagleton has long been a major and uncompromising thinker. But, just as much, he is also an excellent writer. This is a good book to read as a 'refresher' if you have read other books by Eagleton, and a good book to begin with if you have not. You might or might not always agree with Eagleton, but he will make you think, laugh and, if you are honest with yourself, perhaps rethink some of your convictions. Above all, he is one of those very few important thinkers whose intricate thinking does not plough their prose into turgidity.
