Useful but could have used more detail.......2006-03-28
My husband and I are stationed overseas so that fact alone made using this book easy (or easier than if we were over here visiting). My husband is a history buff but I am more of a dabbler...so I wished there was more detail (he didn't need anymore).
--Vicki Landes, author of "Europe For The Senses - A Photographic Journal"
Hard to follow.......2004-12-05
The directions in the book were hard to follow. I got lost and wasted a lot of time using the book. The maps were useless. My copy of the book is in a trash can in Belgium.
Could use more detail.......2004-10-24
Fairly useful, but more detail, especially maps, are needed to help one from getting lost when touring the area. The many eyewitness accounts are appreciated.
Loved this book!!!.......2004-06-04
This book is wonderful for WWII buff's who live in Europe and have the time to travel around and see all the battle sites. The directions are easy to follow and you will end up finding sites that you never would have otherwise. Some of the places in the book are deserted and 'off the beaten path' of normal travelers. All of the books that they have in this series (Normandy, etc) are highly recommended!
Not for the casual traveler to Germany looking for WW2 sites.......2002-08-03
If you are looking for an easy-to-follow guide book highlighting some of the key WWII sites to visit in Europe then I don't recommend this book. If you are a die-hard military buff looking for detailed and laboriously researched information about WWII battles along the border of France and Germany in the Belgium and Luxembourg area then you will appreciate this book.

Book Description
An unexpected collection from Norman Mailer—a book of his selected poems and more than one hundred of his drawings, most of them never before published. Modest Gifts is full of what the author calls “casual pleasures”—witty, naughty, and surprisingly tender verse and art. Lust, seduction, betrayal, jealousy, and even the banality of cocktail party chatter are depicted with humor, affection, and, above all, honesty. Here is an aspect of Norman Mailer unknown to many: lighthearted, prankish, whimsical, and often gentle, playfully sketching the intimate urban world that surrounds us. Modest, funny, and true, each poem and drawing shows a new side of one of the greatest writers of our time.
Customer Reviews:
It's nice to see that Mailer can be modest.......2005-05-16
I remember reading many of these poems years ago and wondering how Mailer dared call them poetry. They were slight little remarks, and sketches and did not have anything of the penetrating depth, the moving power of real poetry. They are a kind of light verse and have at times a certain humor. I remember Mailer writing then that he wrote these poems only because he was going through a time when he could write nothing of real importance.
I do not think it is a disaster or harms his reputation or his important books in any way. Most writers who are known are known for one or two of their works, and the rest go largely unread. These poems the 'promo material ' says show another side of Mailer, light, whimsical tender, etc etc. Perhaps.
But as he himself says he has always taken it to be the writer's task to deepen the reader's understanding and consciousness of life. These poems do not do this.
A smile here and a smile there may be found especially from the drawings.
The great advantage of the work is that you can read it fast, and forget it faster.
God Bless Norman Mailer.......2004-01-05
After all these years some humble pie. Some of this is yet still too sour for our friends in Haters Review Row. Too bad. Norman Mailer is one of the greatest writers of our time, whether you like him or not. If you don't like him, don't waste your time "reviewing" his work, just go away and leave us alone, we don't need any more of your whining. This book gave me a lot of little laughs, and some "modest gifts" of insightful and not-so-great "poems" or "prose-snippets", whatever you would like to call them. It was a fun release from the more arduous "Of a Fire On the Moon" which I am currently reading. I just finished The Prisoner of Sex, written by Mailer in 1970-- quite an interesting take on the "Women's Lib" movement at that time-- a bit heady, but with other equipment as well (!) God Bless Norman Mailer, one of the last great American authors.
Mailer's Genius is Not On Display with Poetry Re-Issue.......2003-12-01
I, like many, think that Mailer ought to win the Nobel Prize for literature for the sheer genius of his published over his fifty plus years as a writer. Few of his generation, or in generations following, have have the kind of profound successes in fiction, reportage, cultural criticism, and political essay.
Mailer has dared what other literary writers only feigned and actively engaged the world in ways and manners that he thought would make reality surrender some of its secrets. The hope, of course, would be that he might be able to change the way men and women viewed themselves in a political reality that had stripped the individual of all creative drive, and hence empower them to change the substance of their world. Grand ambition, yes, and a failed enterprise, but in the attempt are left a string of brilliant books -- "The Naked and the Dead", "The Executioner's Song", "Why are We In Viet Nam", "Armies of the Night", "An American Dream", "Harlot's Ghost",-- that, among others, form a body of work at once daring, daunting, vain and arrogant, preening, breathtakingly on target, raunchy , clipped, rich and rolling and lyrical like the grandest music. An infuriating writer, yes, but even so one who's work stands tall in the era in which he wrote.
This, though, isn't one of those books," Modest Gifts" being, at best, a gussied up reissue of a lone book of verse he produced in the early Sixties,"Deaths for the Ladies (and Other Diasters)".
Now, as then, the pieces are slight, skeletal, un-propelled by anything resembling a notion that the reader cares about. For a writer who's composed some of the richest prose and lyric flights this side of Faulkner and DeLillo, these efforts are so minimal that even a verbal skinflint like Hemingway would call these gifts not modest ,but cheap. Mailer explains interestingly that these were put together at a bad time in his life when he could not compose--stabbing your wife will tend to
dampen your willingness to wax--and that he found something therapeutic in their existence, but there never has been a compelling reason for these things to be put between covers and sold. Unlike some, I think that a great writer's less great work, the unformed work, the jottings, the juvenilia, the notebooks, the scraps and orts, need to remain in the drawer, and not committed to the judgment of history. This poetry is so minimal that it can't even raise a stink.
an irrelevant author.......2003-11-18
i don't know why mailer is a literary icon. calling his novels boring and pedantic would be an understatement. this book is just a lot of senile doodling from a writer who has outlived his relevancy. i don't know of anyone who likes mailer's books. they don't get taught in schools anymore, and perhaps that speaks volumes about the durability of his creative vision. this meandering brain-fart of a book, like harlot's ghost, will not stand the test of time. i guess it's time to say goodbye to an icon, who, in all honesty, was never much of a writer to begin with.
Customer Reviews:
Great overall information on Discus.......2002-07-30
I consider myself relatively new to the hobby. My search for a good book on the subject began when I was incurring heavy casualties after having my discus tank for about a year. I could not understand why I was losing so many Discus. Anyway, my basis of buying this book was to understand the various diseases of discus and the treatments available to combat them.
This book does an excellent job in the set-up of the tank and maintenance. It also covers breeding thorougly. It lacks the information I was searching for being disease and treatment. It was poor in this respect.
Overall a great book
The Proper Care of Discus.......2000-01-27
Good book for the beginner. Covers water quality, foods, breeding, stocking your show tank and a suggested reading section. I rated this book a 4 and not a 5 due to the fact that, although it covers many aspects of Discus keeping, it mentions nothing about disease and treatment for disease. My book is the 1995 edition and I have learned and applied much that I've read!
Good starting point for the beginner.......1997-06-26
This book touched on every aspect of Discus keeping without going off into great detail on the more complicated parts. The author writes in an open minded fashion. It's clear to me as a reader that his way of caring for Discus is not the only successful way. The reader should do what works well for them

Book Description
This study catalogues, categorizes, and describes American painted porcelain of the late Victorian era. Informative text with hundreds of color photosoutlines the function and significance of this art form, now undergoing a resurgence in the antiques market.
Customer Reviews:
Clever, lovely and entertaining........2005-10-30
This book is unlike any other Antique Trader guide I've ever used. Not only does it contain both a table of contents and an index, its content is well organized, comprehensive and very well written. Ms. Kamm approached the writing and compilation of the book with the same fervor Victorian's applied to their quest for perfection. Okay, enough of the hyperbole. If you're looking for a reference to help you identify the difference between a teapot and a chocolate pot, this is the book for you. Ms. Kamm has meticulously identified each piece of popular American painted porcelain, explained its purpose and identified its value. While there are not multiple examples of each piece (a volume of that scope would require at least ten times the space) this book will give you a basic knowledge of the various pieces, their function, and value. The layout is logical and creative, the text is engaging, the photos are gorgeous and the values are very realistic. Ms. Kamm has created a very good reference for the beginning collector or dealer.
American Painted Porcelain by Dorothy Kamm.......2000-10-26
China painting was a popular pastime in the Victorian era. This book is very useful in identifying items from the period 1877-1917. Some pieces are unmarked and some are marked with various manufacturers but were sold as "blanks" and decorated. Descriptions of how the items were used at the turn of the century, outlines of how the items were produced, and examination of the styles of painting are considered in evaluation and in valuation. Values in average retail range were given for approximately 400 pieces. Artists and studios are listed so that you can find out more about your signed pieces. I wish more information was available on the decals used.
Kamm's companion to her previous book shines!.......1999-06-23
When I received the Comprehensive Guide to American Painted Porcelain, by Dorothy Kamm, I was concerned that this would be a rehash of her previous book entitled, American Painted Porcelain. But to my suprise and satisfaction, this book is the perfect companion to the first. Whereas the first book answered general questions regarding identifying and pricing American hand painted porcelain treasures, her new book goes into greater detail regarding the history, function, and the importance of these pieces within the American culture, emphasizing the Victorian, and post-Victorian era. Having read this book from cover to cover, I feel more confident in identifying, pricing, and understanding the significance of these art treasures. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in porcelain and/or Victorian history. This book is a steal relative to the wealth of information conveyed to the reader.
Book Description
Aimed at both the cook and the gardener, Sarah Raven’s new guide to growing your own vegetables makes the most of labor-saving, time-efficient ideas. This is not a book about becoming self-sufficient, but about concentrating time and energy on varieties that are really worth growing. She demonstrates how to plan and plant your plot, recommends the best vegetables to grow and eat, and offers clear instructions on cultivating them with minimum effort and maximum reward. Ultimately, however, The Great Vegetable Plot is about the enjoyment of planting and growing your own produce, and the priceless reward of having fresh vegetables just outside your door.

Book Description
With riches from New World conquests pouring into Seville in the 16th to 18th centuries, the Spanish nobility of Andalucia built exquisite houses and palaces. This book chronicles the finest of these treasures, traces the development of a distinctive regional style of architecture and decoration- the beautiful tiles, dramatic staircases and doorways, columns, and arches, and the cool exterior patios that are so integral to Spanish building. Many of these homes are miraculously preserved with their authentic interiors intact, and a fascinating text tells the stories of the families that built and lived in them.

Book Description
This is the story of a boy's growing up on the Great Blasket, a sparsely inhabited, Gaelic-speaking island off the coast of Ireland. It tells of the simple life of a society that no longer exists, with a humor and poetry refreshingly remote from the modern world that replaced it.
Customer Reviews:
The book came very quickly and I was delighted........2006-07-05
I haven't yet read the book but I will submit a review when completed. However the book came highly recommended to me by many people. they found it a delightful memoir and as i just returend from the Dingle Peninsula, i wanted to read it myself.
The masterpiece of Irish literature.......2002-01-23
This is an extraordinary book, described by the well-know author E.M. Forster as "here is the egg of a seabird - lovely, perfect and laid this very morning".
The author, Muiris Ó Súilleabháin, is an Irish-speaking boy growing up on the Great Blasket Island (An Blascaod Mór). He describes his childhood in the twenties on this 100% Irish-speaking island in Co. Kerry. The population of the island never reached 200, and life there was very archaic - resembling the society in Europe thousands of years ago. Nowhere else in Europe did the shear joy of speaking and love of words live on as here, where thousands of pages of folklore has been collected as well. This love of the language is obvious in this vivid book, in which Muiris presents an affectionate, lively and interesting account of a way of life that no longer is.
Despite being published 70 years ago, the book still feels fresh and manages to blend fond memories and humour in an extraordinary way. This is definitely THE book to buy for anyone interested in the Irish way of life.
musha...what a great book!.......2000-11-19
Twenty Years A-Growing by Maurice O'Sullivan is one heck of a "coming of age" story. I'd never even heard of it until a friend of mine told me that he was reading it. I'm sure glad he did. This is a great book!
I've actually read several coming of age stories recently. I didn't plan to...it just kind of occurred that way. Some of them were really good (David Copperfield by Dickens being one of them); but none of them, Copperfield included, spoke to my heart like Twenty Years A-Growing.
Twenty Years A-Growing was translated into English from Gaelic. I personally find this astounding. They (whoever "they" might be) say a book always loses something in translation. Yet Twenty Years absolutely sings in English...the translation is so powerful that the original must truly be a thing of beauty.
It is an autobiographical tale of growing up in the Blasket Islands off the coast of Ireland around the time of the first world war. For me at least, it was a thing of wonder to be able to enter into this world which has since moved on. It is a story told in a wonderfully simple yet almost lyrically beautiful way. Each chapter is a story in itself. The story as a whole slowly ingrains itself upon your heart and mind.
I felt an affinity with Maurice and his friend Thomas. The adventures they find themselves in ring true even as they entertain the reader. Likewise, the character of the grandfather in particular now feels like an old friend to me. I particularly appreciated some of the wisdom he espouses to Maurice.
I dare anyone to read this book and not be charmed by the lives of these wonderful people who lived almost a hundred years ago in a kind of societal setting that seems all at once foreign, yet somehow more sane than today's world of constant "time management" in pursuit of hollow "muchness" and "manyness."
It does not happen often that I do not to want a book to end. I usually approach the end of a book with satisfaction. Rarely am I left wanting more. Yet that was the case with Twenty Years A-Growing. It is a truly special book.

Fascinating book about a life style gone by.......1999-03-14
Twenty Years A-Growing, or Fiche Bliain ag Fás in its original Irish, is a humorous and well written book about the sometimes hard life at the great western island, An Blascaod Mór, off the cost of Ireland. It tells about the everyday of the islanders in the beginning of the century in a surprisingly modern and lively way. The language of the Island was Irish, and although the Great Blasket is now abandoned, the Irish language still lives on in the mainland parishes in this area. I strongly recommend this book to everyone interested in Ireland, its culture, the Irish language or readerswho just want a fun and good book. I myself have only read the whole of it in its Irish original, but the passes I've read in English shows a well-done translation

A must for every grower!!.......2001-06-20
This book is a must have for every grower. It should not be the sole resource for information, but a reference guide for the beginner to the advanced grower. I find myself referring back the pages frequently to pick up some hidden or forgotton hints. The book is definately an integral part in the success in my garden.
Past History.......2001-05-05
High Times is resting on its history. This re-hash of old cultivation articles contributes very little to someone setting up a garden with what's going on today as far as equipment and hardware. Better to subscribe to the magazine than rely on these tired methods.
High Times, Low Value as Primary Grow Guide.......2000-05-19
Yes, there is a wealth of information in this growing guide, some of it state of the art; that is not the issue. It is a compilation of articles from past issues, and there is a lack of cohesiveness to the content that makes it a poor growing guide for beginners; there is also more contradiction betweeen authors than is helpful. The book is best suited for somewhat experienced growers, looking for esoteric tips to perfect their craft, while exploring a spectrum of diverse and newer ideas. In the later context, it has greater value. For the novice it is a supplimental text to be used in conjuction with any number of more teachable growing guides. Lastly, the book would have benefited from a good index, but it has no index at all.
GROW GROW GROW!.......2000-02-07
I have recently purchased this wonderful grow guide. It is definatly a good fact filled book ideal for any grower. I have purchased many other grow guides but they don't hold a candle to this one,it has in depth facts and tips . I gave this particular guide a rating of 5 because in my eyes you will not find a better. So , happy growing.
