An excellent work of juvenile literature.......2004-04-17

This is an excellent children's book. Any parent with an aspiring aviation enthusiast should pick up the entire series of Bill Sweetman's children's books. One who would pick up this book expecting it to be a serious technical book, the definitive word on MH-53's, will be disappointed, however if one understands this is a children's book, they will be most pleased. Excellent work!

Disappointing treatment of a very interesting subject.......2002-06-21

Published for the juvenile market, this title offers little more than cursory information in its meager number of pages. Anyone looking for detailed information about past MH-53 missions or comprehensive pictorial reference material will not find it here. The selection and quality of photographs is especially weak.

The work of Joel Shapiro (b. 1941), an American artist well known for his large-scale angular and figurative sculptures, is the subject of Joel Shapiro: Sculpture and Drawings, by Hendel Teicher. This catalog of works from 1968 to 1997 is a great opportunity to see Shapiro's art progress and his thought process evolve over three decades. Shapiro spent time in India in the Peace Corps in the late 1960s, and the book traces the influence of that experience on his work, beginning with repetitive clay pieces from 1972. Shapiro has enjoyed an extremely productive career, and Teicher organizes the work into four major categories: memory, structures, figures, and shift of scale. Within these categories are smaller themes, including metaphors, houses, extensions, choreography, trees, etc.

The categorizing is a helpful way to view the work because Shapiro often returns to motifs years later. His first small and poetic house sculpture from 1973 appears again in 1993 in the major outdoor piece he created for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. Besides offering wonderful images of Shapiro's work, including photos of temporal pieces that no longer exist, the book offers a very well conceived and articulated way to understand the artist's oeuvre. Aptly named because of its hilly terrain and abundance of trees, the area now known as Forest Hills was a dusty coal mining community in the late 1800s. Centered between two major roads, the Lincoln Highway (Ardmore Boulevard/U.S. Route 30) and the Greensburg Pike, Forest Hills was incorporated in 1919 in order to gain better representation for tax money. I grew up on Forest Hills. I would have to say that I had the best childhood of anyone I know (besides those from there!). Although we were not far from the city, we were still able to have that small town feel. This book will be a part of my cherished memorabilia!

Falls Short on Many Points.......2005-08-29

I picked this book up at the local library intrigued with the idea of training to the breed. However, many of the points both within training principles and practices and breed characterizations were just plain bad (most of these errors have been pointed out previously). My number one pet peeve: she says not to bother socializing your dogs unless you are showing them because afterall, your dog wouldn't be going over to other dogs' houses for sleepovers and to watch the Superbowl. Excuse me? The very worst aggressive dogs (met a gorgeous 90 lbs German shepherd like this tonight in the park tonight while I was walking my two) are those who don't meet with lots of other dogs and lots of other people. They are the ones that are the lungers and snappers and God forbid if they get off their leash. She just says to walk the other way with your snarling canine. Shame on her. Socialization with other dogs and people is *absolutely* essential.

I would highly recommend "The Latchkey Dog: How the Way You Live Shapes the Behavior of the Dog You Love" by Jodi Andersen over this.

a great book for breeds but awful traing info........2005-06-22

this is one of the best books for breeds but there is just awful training info that i would'int listen to for my life. but like she said you should never use one word comand, overuse the word no or underestimate how smart your dog is. get this book for breed info but try out paul loebs smarter then you think for training info.

Behind the times, and so wrong about many breeds!.......2002-11-26

The author misquotes so many origins of breeds and misnames so many breeds, her credibility with the reader is immediately suspect.
I felt the suggestions were very outdated. I have a multiple-breed household and she was wrong on all three counts. Her suggestions also come off very heavy-handed.
I would recommend and much prefer "Mother Knows Best" by Carol Lea Benjamin and "How To Raise A Puppy You Can Live With".

Misrepresentation of Breed Preferences.......2001-06-25

As I an owner of several Borzois (Russian Wolfhounds), I was shocked to see that Ms. Halliburton states "Borzois come originally from Arabia, so even cool weather might keep them in the house." She also says the breed likes to be outside, especially in the warmer months.

One theory of many about the development of the Borzoi is that they originated from a pair of Salukis, greatly valued by Arabian nobility, being given to a ruler of Russia. However, this theory goes on to say the Salukis could not withstand the Russian winters and so, were bred with a heavy coated native Russian canine to produce the Borzoi.

Borzois come from Russia and were bred to not only survive, but enjoy the cold climate there. Not only do my Borzois dislike heat, they have a low tolerance for it and must be protected from heat stroke.

While her description of their termperament and attitude toward training was accurate, this error about the best environment for this wonderful breed could prove deadly.

I hardly know what's best for every breed, but I feel cause for concern that requirements for other breeds could be misrepresented and create serious problems for the dogs and their owners.

Worth Buying!!!.......2001-03-31

This humorous little book, has accurate information - and you'll find a ton of things that are true, but you haven't heard of before!

A "must read" for anyone who has a dog, or is planning to own one. This book goes very in-depth with the breed porfiles, and I bet you that every, single piece of info is true.

This book traces the development of the Moses nativity story from pre-Biblical sources through its Biblical formulation, and continues to trace its evolution in post-Biblical literature, from the Apocrypha, Pseudepigrapha, and Jewish Hellenistic writings, through Rabbinic literature, and up to Medieval Jewish exegesis. Influence of the Moses nativity story is also detected in Christian writings: hence this book also traces the evolution of the story in the New Testament and early Christian works. This study uses a literary-typological approach, similar to that of the Gunkel-Gressmann school and the method used by Loewenstamm. However, unlike these scholars and their disciples, who focused primarily on the biblical stage, this book gives equal attention to all stages of the evolution of the birth story pattern; and, while providing a detailed analysis of each work, also focuses on continuity, tracing the path along which the literary pattern of the Moses nativity story developed.

A worthwhile read.......2001-07-20

I started reading this slim volume quite a few months ago and I put it down, never intending to finish it. Some of the early parts of the book rubbed me the wrong way, to the point where I wondered just how much of a true Christian Mr. West really was. Recently, I picked it up and basically started where I left off, and my previous judgementalism gave way to a certain admiration. Morris West has not only the wisdom of a man of advanced years but the worldly experience that gives him a valuable perspective to share on such issues as evil, violence, dissent, and death. He has seen things most of us with never see, and this book is all the more enlightening because of that fact. Although not a Catholic like Mr. West is, I share his experience of a life that is centered around the institution of the church, and can appreciate the love/hate relationship one can have with the Body of Christ. Like many, he cries out for a church that values the person above laws and regulations. I look forward in the future to reading some of his fiction (although much of it is out of print and rather hard to get at this time).

I've long admired West's ability to move me with words. His papal trilogy in particular ranks as one of my favorite in literary fiction. To read this delightfully honest and heartfelt memoir is to gain even greater insight to the wisdom and insights of his fictional work.

West, long a respectful rebel of sorts, has managed to approach subjects and questions many wish to avoid. In doing so, rather than turning these into platforms for personal grievances, he elevates their importance in community discussion.

Despite his literary prowess, West manages to come across as an everyday man, a man you'd like to converse with over coffee. No, don't remind me that the most likely place for conversation would be at his deathbed. He may be getting older, nearer to unknown that he says he welcomes willingly, but his words will remain as a part of our culture. His thoughts and ideas will remain to challenge future generations.

Mr Morris West, thank you for that gift.

With sales of his books having exceeded sixty million copies, Morris West is not only Australia's best-selling writer, but also one of our best-known storytellers. With his so-called `Vatican Trilogy' - `The Shoes of the Fisherman', `The Clowns of God' and `Lazarus' - he virtually invented a genre, the papal novel.

In the past, West has resisted calls for an autobiography, holding that the `chronicles of my works and days have already been presented under the decent draperies of fiction'. However, having turned eighty, West has put aside fiction to give an account of his twentieth-century pilgrimage.

The book is not an autobiography as such, but rather part memoir, part philosophical meditation, part spiritual testament. We learn of his early family life before becoming a trainee with the Christian Brothers, of the trials of religious life, and of life as a writer on the international stage. Morris West has written a truly challenging testimony as he nears the end of a fine career and eventful life. For me, he summed up how I feel as a Catholic facing the challenges of the Church at the end of the millenium. His candidness and honesty are refreshing. His ideas worth consideration. And his words often inspiring. I am grateful he took the time to tell me so intimately about his own faith journey

Riveting Read.......2007-05-09

It is easy for the previous reviewer to complain about hearsay, innuendo and conspiracy theories, but it is also going to be difficult to satisfy everyone while you shed a different light on the pre-packaged sanitized mainstream version of Twentieth Century history.

Some speculation is indeed included, but where it occurs the author clearly presents it as such. On the other hand however, she also raises a lot of questions that have never properly been dealt with. These include the real reasons behind Edward VIII's abdication, the absence of the Duke of Kent from popular history, the Profumo cover-up, the Blunt cover-up, the real life of Louis Mountbatten and much, much more.

The style is honest and definitely not sensationalist while it offers convincing arguments for many historic anomalies. Why, for example, is the last Royal to die on active service never honoured on Armistice Day? Why did 'Sir' Anthony Blunt keep his title and honours while remaining in the Queen's employment after being unmasked as a Soviet spy? Why was Mountbatten assassinated when he had been the most leftist of all the Royals? Many more are dealt with.

This book is highly recommended for all those who believe that they are not being fed the full picture on the Six 'o Clock news...

Filled with Errors.......2005-03-05

To anyone with an elementary knowledge of British history, this is a disgraceful book, filled with errors. It is an exercise in phoney mock-scholarship - for example the authors quote "sources" which on investigation have no more authority than they do. Other sources are conveniently not named, with authors falling back on the trick "some say," or "it has been alleged by some that ..." You get the idea? Treatment of well-known historical events such as the outbreak of world War II are simply ignorant.

Since the royal family don't sue for defamation, you can print any falsehoods you like about them. Maybe they should start suing, as this might clean up the tidal wave of garbage written about them a bit.

Facts are plain false or distorted. Allegations are made for which there is no real evidence and which cannot possibly be proven. The book so fails to deliver the information it promises - it delivers nothing but rumor, gossip, innunedo and conspiracy theories - that it should seriously be reported to ther consumer protection authorities as an exercise in taking money under false pretenses.

So, so VERY interesting........2003-10-15

Brilliantly and painstakingly researched, entertainingly and well written (there is an attempt to weigh up various arguments, rather than being biased towards one...), with very relevant and timely comment regarding this family.

My only critisisms are:
1. The choice of front cover/main title on this book (somewhat tabloid) marks it as being written by a journalist. Nevertheless, there are other authors involved here (including 2 historians - one specialising in intelligence, the other - military history), that bring a level of seriousness and meticulousness with them, beyond which is conveyed adequately by the (front) cover.
2. The lack of an index. Sources and references are thankfully provided, however as a work of research this book also needs an index.
