Not Up-to-Date.......2004-11-15

I purchased this book in 1989 and used it then, and again, later in 1994. I now live on the Big Island and can tell you that this book is not up-to-date on the easily accessible beaches. There have been marked changes in the 4WD beaches, also. What was once my Beach Bible, is no longer useful. It WAS a great book.

Big Island Fun on Big Island Beaches.......2004-06-21

My favorite part of this book is how the author reveals what happened to the beach along bayfront in Hilo. The diversion of the waiolama river project removed about half of the beach. If you're wondering what this has to do with a book review, it's in the details.

This book gives details. It obvious that the author spent a great deal of time here and listened intently to locals when researching his work here. This book enables you to become intimately familiar with the beaches here on the big island.

If you want to learn about big island beaches from a local's perspective, get this book. For those of you just looking to visit for a few weeks, you'll also enjoy the book for it's maps, directions and "what to expect" perspective.

I especially like that fact that only the major beaches are covered. The private, small, secluded, beaches we enjoy locally, aren't always mentioned. When you get here, hire a local guide to reach those truly hidden spots. A local guide will get you to the 4x4 only access areas devoid of other visitors.

Why 4 stars? As a surfer, I cannot give this book more than 4 stars. It deserves 5 stars. It's the best book on big island beaches that I've read (more than 15). It's just too good and it will probably cause more people to surf our already crowded surf breaks. :)

Beaches of the Big Island.......2001-07-02

The best informative book you can buy on the entire coastline of the big island. Much historical info adds to the richness of the general information provided. If you are looking for an out of the way place on the big island, this book will help you find it

Beaches of the Big Island.......2001-01-09

This book displays black and white pictures and is totally outdated. Out of all the tour books on Hawaii that I ordered (Frommers 2000, Fodors 2000, Best Places to Stay in Hawaii and the guides books written by Andrew Doughty and Harriet Friedman, Lonely Planet) this was by far the worst. I should have returned it while I could but I wanted to give it a chance. What a waste of time and money.

Who says there's no good beaches on the Big Island?.......2000-08-17

This is a great book which could benefit from being updated. With the focus on just beaches, it was extremely useful and I found many great beaches I wouldn't have found otherwise during my three week visit. If beachgoing is your thing, this book will help you find plenty, expecially non-resort ones that are virtually empty.

Another gem from the Klise sisters.......2006-07-06

Little Rabbit is about to celebrate his fifth birthday with a grown-up birthday party. He tells Mother Rabbit, "I'm done with crying. . . Crying is for babies, and I'm not a baby anymore." He decides to invite only those who are big, "like me," and don't cry. But when he surveys his animal friends, he finds out that they still do cry. Mother Rabbit weeps, too, even when she's happy. Little Rabbit can't believe all this! Mother Rabbit tells him, "You can cry for any reason. Or for no reason at all." Growing up doesn't have to mean never crying again, so they throw a huge birthday bash for all his friends.

Any mother of a child who seems to be growing up too fast will understand who's holding the hankie as Little Rabbit blows out the candles.

The satisfying conclusion of this sweet story is illustrated with expressive animals, sly gags, and clever details on every page -- everything we book lovers have come to expect (and cherish) from books by the team of Kate and M. Sarah Klise.

I was moved by his difficult upbrings and how he fought back. I couldn't stop laughing when he talked about the mexican culture and their strange habits & sayings, because I could definitely relate being mexican myself.

I love this book. Not only did the book help me understand his comedy even more but I was was able to relate to him more now than before I read his book.

On top of him giving us a look into what his life was truly like he still made me laugh with his excerps.

First of all I can say that after reading this book I laughed and I cried. It was very touching and I think so many people can relate to George Lopez and his childhood. You have to give George alot of credit where credit is due. He has come along way, just look how far he has come.... That's got to count for something..... I have all his cd's and his dvd's. I can play them over and over again.... But nothing compares to seeing George Lopez live in concert. That was one of the best comedy concert I have ever been to... The book is well worth reading and I don't think if your a true George Lopez fan you won't be disappointed... You will laugh and maybe even cry...

Days of Whine and Roses.......2005-02-27

I really expected to enjoy this book, but I was severely disappointed. Understandably, George Lopez had a rotten childhood. In the first half or so of his autobiography, he constantly reiterates this point repeatedly, to the point where the reader stops learning anything new and, at least in my case, dreads reading the next paragraph. Toward the end of the book, Lopez switches from whining about his rotten childhood to constantly pointing out his belief that he is God's gift to Latinos. He also goes into great detail about his self-belief that he is a major talent as a golfer, as well as an infallible comedian. However, his "hard look" at his life never dwells on any of his faults or mistakes. He briefly mentions getting caught in school with pot, but says he only had it because someone gave it to him before school and he had nowhere else to put it. Lopez mentions a problem in his marriage that causes his wife to give up on him and kick him out of the house, but he softcoats the entire episode. (Reading between the lines, it appears he had at least one extra-marital fling, but he doesn't want to take a "long, hard look" at whatever the problem was.) Between his whining about his childhood and his acceptance as the greatest thing to ever happen to Latinos and comedy, I found George Lopez' book to read more like a psychiatric session for him than an open and honest revelation to his fans. If you must read this book, I strongly recommend checking it out from your local library before committing your own hard-earned money.

Inspiring and Humorous.......2004-10-22

George Lopez' autobiography is an inspiring read about his life. It tells how he overcame his childhood to become the success that he is today. I was really moved by his childhood and how he learned to overcome the problems in his childhood. I especially enjoyed reading how he got his television show and the stories he told related to it. The book is very humorous and had me giggling the whole way through.
A humorous and inspiring story of one of TV's best comic actors.

This book was a god-send. I bought it after my baby was born, and wish I had gotten it before. I had a very difficult baby who had major dramas sleeping. This book offered lots of very helpful advice, and helped debunk some of the myths out there.

Ya me había leído este libro en inglés hace unos meses y me encantó. Hay partes que te mueres de la risa, y en otras te dan ganas de llorar con la historia de George. Me volvió a gustar otra vez en español. Está divertido, y muy real, muy del corazón en otras partes. Una buena historia de éxito de un latino en USA. En español lo sientes hasta más genuino que en inglés. Y no tienes que ser un fan de George para que te guste.

English now for the gringos:
I had already read this book in English a few months ago and loved it. And loved it again now in Spanish. It's a lot of fun, moving, inspiring, and a real success story. I compared it to the original and found that the translation faithfully conveys the great feeling, humor and spirit of the English version. You don't have to be a George Lopez's fan to enjoy it in any language.

Disturbing, frightening, and completely true.......1999-02-19

I live in Columbia, Maryland, and heard about this book in high school maybe a year after it went to print. I was entirely freaked out by the descriptions of police brutality in places I have been to. I played baseball at Oakland Mills High School. This is my town Parrish was talking about. I believe every word he said. I recommend this book to anyone. My only criticism is the second half of the book when Parrish searches for alternative explanations to Bowie's death. Noble, but pointless I thought.
