Great Coverage.......2006-12-15

The American Corporate Identity Annual showcases the designers work better than any other design annual out there. Most annuals cram eight or nine designers onto one page, then charge them exorbitant fees. As a designer who works long hard hours for his clients, it's great when my blood, sweat and tears are showcased so nicely on a full page or even a full spread. And with the addition of a "Student Work" category, what a great way for design firms to scout out new talent. Keep up the good work!!

A must have for the graphic designer. Good color and tons of nice samples. I work in a design studio and find this is one of the first publications the staff looks at for inspiration when starting a new project. I wanted my own copy but found out it's ....should I say more.

Excellent text for all riding disciplines.......2003-05-03

This book is very concise, clear and helpful with explinations of basic and advanced dressage movements. It inculdes extremly articulate definitions of the gaits, aids and basic riding terms. The diagrams of aids are very useful. The photos help to give the reader a clearer picture of the concepts beign described.This book would be good for any rider to read. Written by one of the top dressage riders, it can be a bit tedious at times, since the authour's native tounge is not english.

Practical Dressage Manual.......2000-04-13

A condensed but informative book covering the basic gaits through upper level movements, also covers the riders aids and position, and a brief chapter on competition. This book doesn't go into great detail but has good information in it for anyone interested in dressage. It outlines several exercises to develop the horse, and riders aids for movements are illustrated as if you are looking down on the horse. Written by a very experienced rider emphasizing the "art" of dressage. A good addition to any dressage library.

A Worthwhile Collector's Book.......2002-05-12

This is one of a series of books by the same author covering "unique" manufactured items including cigarette lighters, ballpoint and fountain pens, and flashlights among others. It is also a collector's price guide. One should read the Introduction and History sections carefully because the rest of the book consists primarily of pictures and captions.
My interest was piqued when the dust jacket blurb listed hood ornaments. L.V. Aronson started doing business as The Art Metal Works in the 1880's. They are said to have made the first hood ornaments manufactured for sale in the U.S. in about 1909. Since I am helping the San Diego (CA) Automotive Museum catalog its hood ornament collection, and we have one of these, I bought the book.
Unfortunately only one hood ornament (of several they made) is covered. It is a 1915 Uncle Sam with "America First" emblazoned on it. While I think the author has confused "patriotism" with "isolationism" in his discussion of it, nonetheless it is an interesting piece. But even more interesting is the picture on page 100 of a 1909 Smiling Baby Buddha figurine which became the first U.S. hood ornament, "GOBBO". My source informs me they came in three sizes - large (trucks), medium (cars) and small (bicycles). He owns a complete set. The author informs us that it wasn't unusual for companies to "borrow" figures they (or others) made for one use and change it to another.
About 1923, GOBBO's head became an incense burner (page 110) with "I am GOBBO - God of Good Luck" inscribed on the side with L.V. Aronson's mark on the bottom. This same inscription appears on the hood ornaments.
When WWII ended, the various items the company was producing such as incesne burners, bookends, aquarium stands, figurines, etc., were discontinued and the company focused on making cigarette lighters and associated items which were the most profitable,

Ordinar y book written by famous authority.......2000-10-08

I bought the book because I intend to build a japanese style house.This book is useless in residence design.The title is wrong!The book is about famous royal palaces and sorroundings.It contains exactly nineteen beautiful color pictures, showing some general views of six imperial palaces and gardens. Short descriptions and historical details are presented with a score of black and white pictures and some sketcks.

It is difficult to believe that this ordinary book was written by the former leading authority in premodern Japanese architecture.

I recommend "Form & Space in Japanese Architecture" by Norman Carver Jr, who really understood and captured the the japanese spirit.

The book arrived in a timely manner and was in perfect condition.
As for the content, what can I say? St. Patrick is an inspiring man and these writings enable one to see real person. But at the same time, the writings also show the reason he became a saint. How many people do you know found God after being sold into slavery by Irish pirates?

If you would love to get a picture of this great man,or you are Catholic like me,and want to learn a few of his writings.I say "read this book". His style is a little old fashon, but he was that. This is a good read ,and a short book check it out.

interesting work -- autobiographical, not autobiography.......2001-09-29

This is a very short book (81 pages long, 111 if you include the prefaces and the frontispiece, big print, easily fitting in your jacket pocket) and includes Patrick's Lorica -- the hymn known as the Deer's Cry or Faeth Fiada as well as The Letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus (basically a public pillory of Coroticus) and St. Patrick's Confession.

If you are interested in buying The Confession because you want a straight-forward account of St. Patrick's life, you should be warned that it will not serve that purpose. If that is what you're looking for, I recommend you buy a biography instead. Given that the literary conventions for autobiographies had yet to be established, this work is much like St. Augustine's Confessions but more laconic and oblique. Apparently, it was written in defense of his character, having been recently defamed by his ecclesiastical competitors in England. As such, I think it would be best approached as an example of St. Patrick's theology. The editor has been very helpful in this regard by noting in the text every instance St. Patrick is quoting from the Bible. I'd estimate, on that basis, that quotes from, allusions to, the Bible account for around 40% of the text. Thus, if you want to understand the work, you probably want to read it with a Bible near so you can follow the thread of St. Patrick's argument/allusion. However, as you might imagine, this adds substantially to the amount of time required to digest the book.

I found A Letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus much more accessible, which makes sense given its intended audience - the faithful of Ireland. It comprises about a fifth of the book and was very interesting to me, at least, as an example of the power of ideas, how they can be used to bind together a community which can then be wielded as a tool, and why, in the competition between the old or pagan meme with the Christian one, the Christian meme more or less prevailed.

"Deer's Cry" is only a few pages long, and not more than nice to have. It clearly illustrates, however, the difficulties John Skinner (the translator) notes of translating these works, namely the loss of the chiastic structure and overall prosody. This is a problem of translation in general, but I would wager that these works are particularly difficult in that regard. I trust the translation is good, but I thought prospective buyers who, like me, are unfamiliar with St. Patrick and his times should be made aware of these difficulties.

With the above in mind, I would recommend this book as an interesting primary source for the thinking, life and times of St. Patrick which, in places, are both beautiful and disturbing.

You'll read it over and over again.......2000-06-15

This charming little book is a great guide for anyone who wants to know the man who is St. Patrick. In this work, O'Donohue doesn't discuss the legends that surround Patrick but translates Patrick's own writings and adds an insightful commentary. The author offers a new examination of Patrick as he suggests that Patrick's hard-to-decipher language is not the result of Patrick's lack of learning, as Patrick and many of his commentators claim, but the result of Patrick's own brilliant mind trying to bring the message of the Gospel to the Celts in their own language. This book will take you directly to the heart of a simple saint who's witness to Christ changed the fate of Ireland and, consequently, the fate of the world.
