I have been to San Francisco dozens of times and used at least five different travel guide books. I especially liked this one because the author gave a real sense of the places and gave me a better idea of whether I wanted to go to the places--especially when it came to restaurants. As far as sights go, all the essentials are covered. And there are plenty of hotels, restaurants, and shops to choose from. I found some real neighborhood gems thanks to this book. It definitely helped me to see more of authentic San Francisco.

Vibrant tapestries of beribboned birds, cantering centaurs, and Dionysian dancers, woven in Coptic Egypt more than a thousand years ago, were artfully arranged in a handsome pair of albums in 1913. Some of the fabrics are shown in unique collage compositions. Sandals, spindles, and a mysterious lock of hair are assembled in a shallow box at the back of one album. Many textiles in this important collection, housed at the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington, were once joined by warp and weft with those from the Musée du Louvre and other major museums.

Nancy Hoskins deftly interweaves the creation of the textiles in the Greco-Roman city of Antinoé, Egypt, with their discovery by the charismatic French archaeologist Albert Gayet (1856-1916). Gayet staged stunning exhibitions of the pieces in Paris at the turn of the century and ultimately gave them to museums or sold them. One collector, Henry Bryon, had his 144 fabrics bound into the two albums featured here.

The album pages and covers are illustrated in glowing color, along with archival photographs from Gayet's expeditions. The style, structure, and iconography of each tapestry, tabby, and tablet-woven textile are discussed within the cultural construct of Late Antique and Early Christian Egypt. Detailed technical drawings illustrate the special weaving techniques of the Copts. Directions for six weaving projects inspired by the album fragments are included. The story of the inimitable Coptic tapestry albums will delight weavers, textile historians, art historians, and archaeologists.

CARIBBEAN AFOOT, A Walking & Hiking Guide.......2000-04-03

An incredibly useful, readable guide based on the author's personal experience. It's subjective, but the author explains why he liked or disliked the particular trail (or island, or city, or historical site or whatever!) Includes length of the hike, level of difficulty, time estimates and even info on what type of shoes one should have (sandles okay, walking shoes, serious hiking boots, etc.) The author highlights points of interest along the way, tidbits of history, and additional information about the area. It focuses on the trails, but also points out good snorkeling nearby and beaches to avoid due to dangerous undertows, etc. An informative introductory section covers interesting cultural considerations, plants and bugs to avoid, historical information and useful overall suggestions. The hikes are actually organized by island, and are very easy to follow. The only thing that would add to the enjoyment of this book would be color photos, but that would also make the book more expensive and probably heavier to carry! It's definately a useful book for anyone hoping to explore nature trails in the Caribbean!

This Book ain't my good buddy!.......2000-04-04

In this world of endless struggle and crisis, you need a book that would get you along in the world of accounting. Unfortunately, this book is a disappointment to the GAAP. Like my good buddies said, the author did not organize the topics well...this and that mumbo-jumbo. I have to teach it to my students my own way. Right now we only use the book for the questions. The questions are so hard too for my students. Everytime the homeworks are due, people come to me and bug me. People like...well..I don't wanna mention names here. In conclusion, people of the world unite to overthrow this book from academic acceptance it currently enjoys and on to the pile of rubble.

This book talks about accounting in a limited way. Whereas it says that it aims to present accounting to the reader regardless of his/her background, the book certainly fails to do so. Organization of information is poorly executed, and lack of depth and non-randomization of scenarios make the readers' perspective quite limited.

Knowing very little about Ethiopia, Eritrea and the area surrounding those countries, I approached this book with an open mind. The authors style immediately put me at ease, as her personal story of adventure, love, family and survival in a new land unfolded. I would recommend this book to any one with even a hint of the romantic in them.

Roland Marchand's lavishly illustrated and carefully researched book tells how large companies such as AT&T and U.S. Steel created their own "souls" in order to reassure consumers and politicians that bigness posed no threat to democracy or American values.
Marchand traces this important transformation in the culture of capitalism by offering a series of case studies of such corporate giants as General Motors, General Electric, Metropolitan Life Insurance, and Du Pont Chemicals. Marchand examines the rhetorical and visual imagery developed by corporate leaders to win public approval and build their own internal corporate culture. In the "golden era" of the 1920s, companies boasted of their business statesmanship, but in the Depression years many of them turned in desperation to forms of public relations that strongly defended the capitalist system. Well documented history of how corporations learned to create images for public consumption.......2006-04-24

This is an interesting work in business and cultural history. Roland Marchand documents the way corporations used (and developed) public relations to develop images of themselves in the public mind. This is really about the early decades and is quite fascinating. We see this today, certainly. For example, when some huge food conglomerate shows you some master chef each portion of the food they want you to buy, you are getting the same kind of treatment. It wouldn't do to show you the huge machines and food production lines that create these food products in vast quantities. No, they want you to think in terms of some impossibly personalized image. (Although recently I saw a television commerical for a breakfast cereal showing the machines making and packaging the food with some of the folks making it talking to the viewer about how great their product is.)

While some may feel the author of the book is more hostile to corporations than is actually appropriate, I think he has done a fine job in presenting us with these historical images and insightful text that supports his thesis. I am certainly pro-business and conservative. However, I in no way want to pretend that corporations are caring and personal entities that have objects other than providing profits for their shareholders at heart. There are a great many philosophical issues that can be discussed about the duties of corporations, and I am willing to engage in those debates, but no one should mistake these entities for families or friends (or monsters or enemies, either). Corporations are artificial creations that we have created to provide goods and services efficiently and thereby returning profits to shareholders. This book documents how they create images that help them accomplish those purposes.

Three centuries of Jewish life on the Hungarian land.......2003-04-22

The stories recalled and retold by Fenyvesi conjure up what must not have been a common occurence: a Jewish family in the same place for at least three centuries who owned their land and controlled the surrounding estates of the Gentiles. Uncommon too: the ability to revive on the page the stories of one's family members going back hundreds of years. In clear prose, largely uncluttered by cliche or digression, Fenyvesi offers a well-told series of vignettes and anecdotes, mixed with his own encounters with the people descended from the peasants his ancestors once employed.

Most of the book takes place not in Budapest (home to 98% of the surviving Jews in the country; 6/7 of the Jewish population was killed in the Holocaust) but in the villages near and far from the provincial city of Debrecen. This gives added interest to what has largely been documented as an urban saga for Hungarian Jewry, and the love of the author's family for their land goes far to explain why nothing short of extermination moved the Fenyvesis and Kaufmanns from their beloved roots in such a seemingly ordinary terrain.

The author, as a gardener himself, shares this understanding of bonds between land and lore, and writes well of the connections established in his family between Judaism, farming, loyalty, and continuity. His stories range from humorous to harrowing, and his family runs the usual gamut of believers, skeptics, rebels, and good-natured souls. I only held back a star in my rating because the last chapters in the book noticeably lacked the interest for me that the majority of the book had sustained.

Nonetheless, this is a fine example of a book that adults as well as teenagers eager to find out more about Central Europe and Jewry should seek out. It's uncommon to get a viewpoint that's neither shetl nor city, and for so long a period that focuses on the family within the nation and takes the microcosmic view to show the greater detail needed to appreciate the connections joining a people's love for the local with their grappling with their place in the wider culture and their faith.
