    Book Description

The essential guide for anyone who wants to cross the American continent on a bicycle. Describes a route that's both manageable to ride and historically and scenically interesting. With detailed route maps and descriptions.

2 out of 5 stars Decent info, dull writing.......2007-03-02

If you are looking for information about a potential route to ride across North America, then this book is decent. There are small maps that are likely useful (although a bit too small), and admittedly very detailed descriptions of a route that is completely possible for an average cyclist. There are additional comments about the areas you are passing through, tips for food and lodging, and some advice about things like fixing saddles and replacing tires when they wear out.
However, if you are looking for an interesting narrative of a trans-American journey (which is what I was looking for when I bought this book), keep shopping. I have given up reading halfway through the book. The writing is banal and full of tired cliches and overused phrases, and the whole book is badly in need of an editor. Here's a couple of winners from around page 110, where I finally gave up:
"The vastness is almost mind-boggling for a city person." (This is what they mustered up to describe New Mexico near Albuquerque.)
and "It's truly a window into the golden era, giving you a 'deja vu' of a time warp from a Star Trek episode." (I mean, what does this sentence even mean?)
The book is full of stuff like this. You get the feeling that they made some notes in a notebook, with a side comment saying "more detail later" and when it came time to write the book just couldn't remember exactly how things felt. So, good enough, huh?
I don't want to criticize too much, because the book has some value as a detailed guidebook with passable maps (did I mention they really are a bit small to be useful?). And I do envy the Christians for what they accomplished - something that I hope to do sometime soon, although following a more meandering route. But the book really could have been published as a series of maps with some side notes and not lost a thing.
As for me, I'll be looking elsewhere for either a better narrative or a decent set of maps with a bit more detail. If I find either of those - and I'm pretty sure I will - I'll be recycling this book pretty quickly.

4 out of 5 stars Great details a great guided how to guide.......2005-09-20

Cycling accross country is something I plan on doing some day. This book gives you a detailed route on where to go. The authors are alot older then I am which gives me hope of doing this in the next couple of years. Over all the book has great information, equal to anything you can find on the web. Which is one of the reasons I bought it. The only comment I would have would be to add even more editorials and personal ramblings on the things they saw and did.

    5 out of 5 stars A "must" for cross-country bikers & armchair travelers........2000-04-06

Lue and Shannon Christian's road trip adventure, published as Cycling Across North America: A Leisurely Route From Coast To Coast, begins in Fresno, California and picks up Route 66 to Illinois, and then travels through Indian and Michigan, then on into Canada, finally finishes up in Quebec City. The Christians averaged 53 miles a day, totaling over 3700 miles in all, and with very little climbing. But it is much more than just a pleasant travelogue adventure, it also services as a superlative planning guide for others seeking their own sense of wonder in a cross-country trip by bicycle. By following their established routes, fellow travelers can enjoy the sights and pleasures the Christians found when they made their three month journey. Cycling Across North America is valued and pleasurable reading for armchair travelers, and a "must" for anyone seeking a successful and memorable cross-country bike trip of their own.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration to follow in path.......2000-03-08

At age 36, I would love to be able to do a ride such as this, but would never have the time to plan it. But, now I have the dream of one day doing this ride with the help and inspiration of the Christian's guide. Hopefully, I won't have to wait 'til my spouse is 60...maybe we can take our passel of kids and see America sooner than that.

This guidebook has so much detailed information on what the ride is like, where to stay and where to eat. I half-way expect to have the names of all the host families.

A long needed guide for the recreational cyclist to make a safe journey across a great country!

5 out of 5 stars An expert cross-country guide for all!.......2000-03-01

This new book by the Christians is well written, easily understandable, with their special form of dry humor laced throughout. I am not a cyclist, but am interetested in cross-country travel and their book, complete to a fault, also works well for people who would like to explore America by car, motorcycle or Motorhome.

The wisdom of their preliminary scouting trip as descibed paid off in this being a usable carry-along whenever one heads out across America. The Route 66 information makes it valuable for junkies of that historic highway.

The maps are detailed and understandable, and the elevation changes are marked so those on two wheels can plan their days.

This will make a good bookshelf reference for all travelers!

          Book Description

This is the first full-length survey in any language of the fiction and film generated in France by the Algerian war (1954-1962). Although part of a much wider process of decolonization, the conflict was so traumatic that it brought France to the verge of civil war and its memory continues to haunt French society today. Like America's experience in Vietnam, it has been understood as a paradigm of the collapse of Western certainties in the post-war period. Philip Dine's ground-breaking study examines the novels and films which deal with the war in an attempt to understand the lasting impact of the conflict. By locating texts within institutional and public discourses, it addresses issues of historical agency and ideological dissemination and casts light on the mechanics of literary mystification. Among the writers discussed are Camus, Etecherelli, Marie Cardinal, Genet, Millecam, Perec, and Jules Roy, and the book also explores the films of directors including Godard, Ophuls, Varda, Schoendorffer, Marker, Resnais, and Demy. All quotations in French are accompanied by English translations. Innovative and accessible, Images of the Algerian War will interest all teachers and students of the culture and politics of modern France, together with all those concerned with issues of decolonization.

It is a disturbing and powerful personal story about ethnic profiling. Written by a suspected terrorist, this is a book about racial profiling in the USA, its politics, and its hypocrisy. The author, a North African freelance photographer, takes us inside the issue of ethnic profiling in the aftermath of 9/11. He writes about his encounter with the Illinois state police, the call from the FBI, and the traumatic interrogation that followed. Blending humor and anger, Zighen tells about his personal journey from North Africa to achieve his dreams and goals, only to be suspected of terrorist activities. He manages to tell a succinct story about ethnic profiling in the post 9/11 era and to speak out against it. He drags the reader into the politics, draws parallels between the Algerian police and politicians and their American counterparts, revealing the US Administration’s deafening silence about human rights abuses in his native Algeria. Was there a case of American Paranoia on Route 66 in the aftermath of 9/11? Can an innocent citizen live without fear in America? These questions remain to be answered.

"If you stand up and are counted, you may get yourself knocked down. But remember this: A man flattened by an opponent can get up again. A man flattened by conformity stays down for good."-Watson J. Thomas Jr. This quote is taking from Chapter 5 of Zighen Aym's book and is, in my opinon, a perfect example of the man that Mr. Aym is. In his book, "Still Moments," Zighen shows us what it is like to be an Algerian-American after 9/11. Mr. Aym came to this country to get away from the hardships that were in Algeria and make a better life for himself and his family. Little did he know that just by taking innocent pictures of spiderwebs and railroad tracks he would be under investigation. This just goes to show you the kind of country we are living in where innocent people are questioned just because they enjoy doing something that the government sees as could possibly be related to terrorists.

This book has made me realize even more that not everything the government does is for our protection. While people were investigating Mr. Aym, there could have been something else going wrong somewhere that the moment they would have known nothing about. Zighen Aym's book is one that should be read by all of us, to show that there are still good people in this world and that not everybody is out to hurt us.

Mr. Aym is a normal person, just like you and me, who one day decided to stop on the famous Route 66 and take some pictures. That is when a State Trooper spotted him and started asking him all kinds of questions. Now I know that in this day in age everybody is scared, but after the answers that Mr. Aym gave, I feel as though he wasn't a threat and should have been let go, instead of being made to wait in his car until the Trooper came back after checking him out and let him go. I liked how Mr. Aym thought that it was amusing. You could still tell that he was anxious about the meeting with the FBI, but that he was also accepting it. In the end, everything turned out okay. Mr. Aym wasn't arrested for anything and was allowed to go back to his family. If you want to read a book that shows you how life is like for people after 9/11, pick up this book. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Loosing our rights..........2005-10-26

I think this book provides an example how we are loosing our freedom in the US these days. While the author's experience might not be as tragic as many who faced jails or deported outside the US without any crime, the emotion of the author and his family show how difficult to deal with a false accusation. Many gave their life to provide us a free country with a strong constitution; however, we are willing to give our freedom away just to feel safe. It is a sad story for the US. It is also interesting that how the author links his experience with a police in Algeria several years ago to his experience with a police in the US.

From the supplier: Algerian author Assia Djebar's film, 'La nouba des femmes du Mont Chenoua' portrays a society unknown to Algerian women. With neither plot nor unified theme, it depicts a world of space and time, of body and thought, and of social relationships from the Algerian women's point of view. The movie is distinct in many aspects from other Algerian film and cultural productions because of its disjointed construction and feminine perspective.

                      Book Description

On June 4, 1938, having paid the "German Reich Escape Tax" and the "Jew Property Tax," Sigmund Freud left his apartment at 19 Berggasse forever. A few days before his emigration from Vienna to London, photographer Edmund Engelmann courageously and secretively recorded Freud's legendary residence, documenting it in photographs that were eventually published. An old volume of these photographs was presented to artist Robert Longo in 1993, acting as the catalyst and primary source material for the 30 large-size charcoal works that constitute The Freud Drawings. Via Longo's charcoal, Freud's deserted rooms become an admonition of a destroyed world, tension-filled reminiscences of a place both momentous and monstrous, eclipsed and strange.

This book is humorous and cute- if you're looking for a book that will teach you about Goldens this isn't useful- but it has nice pictures with little captions underneath that will make you laugh. I loved it!

Also, it is very small- only about 5 inches square and only about 60 pages- so don't expect a large book!

This is a funny book for any golden owner!! It tells jobs goldens can do around the house that they really can!! Like my favorite is the "minor garment alterations" as my two goldens eat socks, shoes, scrunchies, towels and anything they can find!!! A book to remember and keep!!!

I borrowed a copy of this book from our library system and found it to be touching and filled with humor. It brought back many fond memories of my old friend and our rich life together.

I plan to get a copy for my library and to give a couple to friends who also share a love for this breed.

I saw this small book at someone elses house. Being a new Lab owner, seeing the personality of the breed in this small book, I had to buy. Expensive..YES..... but I guess put the value on a smile! It sits on my coffee table for visitiors to enjoy.

I returned this book as soon as I received it. I thought it was overpriced for its small size. I'd also expected the pictures to be irresistable; they turned out to be very mundane and cliche. I've seen better amateur pictures taken by lab owners themselves. Bottom line--I would have given this book 0 stars if it were an option.

                      5 out of 5 stars 101 Uses For A Lab.......1999-12-26

We have had labrador retrievers in our family for over 40 years. Splash, our current yellow lab, and our many other labs, is well described in this wonderful book. Splash thinks his (and I am sure other labrador owners will agree) sole role in life is to be our best friend and he gives us so much love every single day. It is clear, after reading this book, that labs are the best breed of dog available. The author truly captures the fine spirit, dedication and devotion of the labrador retriever -- I found the book to be true for all of our wonderful dogs. For those who are fortunate enough to own a lab, this book is a MUST!

4 out of 5 stars (4+) Six Star Pictures, Three Star Price.......2004-06-14

A TRUE DOG LOVER'S DELIGHT! Charming, fun, cute, adorable are all words which can be used to describe this wonderful little book. It is a collection of 101 well-chosen pictures of dogs with a descriptive word or phrase as the title of each picture. The book is divided into four loosely grouped themes. First is titled "in and around the house" and is composed of 24 pictures. Second is "as playmates", 22 pictures. Next is "as tireless helper", 28 pictures, Last is "and specialty uses", 27 pictures.

There are a myriad of breeds, but not surprisingly given their popularity and photogenic qualities, golden retreivers and black labs are most heavily represented. (This was fine with me, since we own one of each.) All different sizes and ages appear, and in fact one of the really nice pairings is the juxtaposition of "someone to grow up with" followed by "someone to grow old with". Some of the other entries familiar to any dog owner or fan are "gardener" (and the related "landscaper"), "exercise partner" and not surprisingly the classic "rescuer". (Guess which breed?) There are also such clever poses as the "weathervane" and the "water quality specialist". It is hard to choose a favorite, but I would probably chose "surrogate sister" although the "lookout" , the "bellhops", the "partners-in-crime " and "playing hide and seek' are close runnersup.

This is a wonderful book to keep on a coffee table or in a reading basket. Your guests will enjoy perusing it and you will want to just pick it up from time to time when you want to look at something that will quickly elict a smile. Note that is very small, but the size is appropriate for the format. As noted above, my only complaint is that it is overpriced if you pay full price. It is clearly meant to appeal to people as an impulse purchase or small gift item; I picked it up next to a cash register at a gift shop while on vacation, and I was entranced enough that I decided to buy it but felt as if I was being overcharged (similar to many other items in the store). However, I am glad that I purchased it - the pictures have been a source of frequent joy since then. It would certainly make a wonderful gift for any dog lover who you know, it is appropriate for all ages.

This is a cute picture book that features dogs doing what they do best, being man's best friend. Every page features a different picture with a different dog and a one or two word description. Uses range from the fun (pillow and secret sharer) to the more useful (paper boy) with a few serious thrown in for good measure (search and rescue). The pictures are so cute that any person who loves a dog will smile the entire way through.

I bought this book as a gift, but being a dog lover, read it first. I was disappointed because, the book is small and just "okay"--it was mildly humorous, but certainly nothing laugh out loud. I'd pay (less) for a book like this, so I'm returning this one to put my money to better use...

3 out of 5 stars Not a very good "how to" book.......2000-07-08

"How to" books should guide a novice through the process of doing something in a very detailed step-by-step process. This book doesn't. It is sometimes vague and leaves the reader asking many questions. I guess you could use this manual to gain some general info, but you may be disappointed in its lack of specific "how to" instruction. The photographs are very nice.

2 out of 5 stars Not as great as it seems!.......2000-06-24

The photos are great, and the language is kept simple. Beyond that this book has little to offer. It insists on a particular growing method without informing about other methods. The authors insistence upon using Metal Halides over High Pressure Sodium lighting is mind boggling. While most of the book is written in a simple and easily understood manner, the chapter on fertilizers contains more jargon than a PHD thesis. Use your money to buy a better book.

John Dugdale is one of America's finest photographers. We must celebrate his artistry--he is still a young man with so much more work and so many dreams still in him, although he is 80% blind from HIV.

This volume, published by Leo and Wolfe Photography could not possibly be more beautiful. At a full 13 1/2" x 13 1/2" it is magnificently hardbound with beige/grey linen covered boards and the artist's self-portrait on the front cover.

John Wood, poet and photography critic, has supplied a lengthy, wonderful appreciation of Dugdale and an investigation into his works: images of transcendental beauty. Poet Morri Creech has contributed "The Pilgrimage of Lazarus" (after the photographs of John Dugdale) and, perhaps, best of all, Pulitzer Prize winning novelist, Robert Olen Butler, gives us "A Prayer for John Dugdale" which begins "Saint Ludwig pray for me. I am going blind. Just as you went deaf."

Dugdale's cyanotypes are superbly reproduced in this once in a lifetime volume. They take us to another time, another place and a new spirituality. Even at this very high price, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

                            Book Description

Storytelling kept alive the myths, legends and history of the Blasket Islands. In her old age, Peig Sayers, recounted her life to her son who recorded the tale in this book. She recalls the events of her life and her simple philosophy in a moving poetic style. Such everyday tasks as collecting turf for roots, catching and eating seals, and preparing for a wake are depicted alongside such momentous events as drownings at sea, pilgrimages, and the spread of the news of the Easter uprising in 1916. There were 'clouds of sorrow', but helping to lift them was the friendship she found in the community, which 'was like a little rose in the wilderness'. The Blasket Islands are three miles off Irelands Dingle Peninsula. Until their evacuation just after the Second World War, the lives of the 150 or so Blasket Islanders had remained unchanged for centuries. A rich oral tradition of story-telling, poetry, and folktales kept alive the legends and history of the islands, and has made their literature famous throughout the world. The 7 Blasket Island books published by OUP contain memoirs and reminiscences from within this literary tradition, evoking a way of life which has now vanished.

In spite of other reviewers making light of this wonderful woman's story, I see it in a different light altogether. I think we all have a lot to learn from Peig's life and experiences. We are spoiled on material goods and suffer from spiritual deprivation. Peig may have had the "poor mouth" but she never whined about it. We whine about a red light that doesn't turn green fast enough or the fax machine when it seems to take forever. Does anyone really think we are better for that? I think not. I am now in my third reading of Peig Sayer's autobiography and, over the years, I keep getting more out of her vision. Do I want to live like her? Not entirely. Who wants to lose their children and be separated from those we love? Do I envy her close ties to nature and her personal relationship with God? Yes, I do. It's not that I want to be Peig Sayers, its just that I think she has a lot to say to those of us who have become so far removed from the essentials of God's world. I love her story and I wish I had known her.

4 out of 5 stars A classic of "poor mouth" literature !.......2000-09-22

This is the story...of a lovely lady! This book was the bane of every school child in Ireland for decades. It used to be on the curriculum so that, despite the fact that you would have to grit your teeth to read it, it was a bestseller in Ireland. It tells the story of Peig Sayers, a woman who lived in the poor and rural south-west of Ireland in the early 20th century. In this book, everyone was poor, no-one had anything, people were evicted from their hovels, life was hard, people died young, children were barefoot, the livestock slept in the house, it was always raining....well, you get the idea.

Peig was born on the mainland of Ireland, but married a fisherman who lived on the Blasket islands, a small collection of islands a few miles off the coast of Kerry. Tough as things were on the mainland, things were tougher still here! You were lashed by the Atlantic, the wind could blow you off the cliffs, and you could be drowned while you were fishing, and that was on a good day! The book tells of her struggle to be accepted by the islanders, how she brought up her large family, how she coped with the death of some of her sons fishing, and the folklore, stories, and culture all around her.

This book, and others like it from other authors on other islands ("The Islander" being another good example) formed a literary style which became known as "the poor mouth". They all share similar characteristics as they described the oppresive hardships suffered stoically by the people. Even now in Ireland, anyone whinging about their bad situation would be dismissed as "putting on the poor mouth" and everyone would know what was meant. There is even a spoof "poor mouth" book by Flann O'Brien, which is well worth reading as an antidote to all the hardship and depression!

Now that Peig is no longer force fed down poor school children's throats, it has been re-appraised as a valuable historical record of western Irish culture, and no longer as an instrument of torture. Now that you don't HAVE to read it, more people now seem to WANT to read it! The book was originally written in the Irish language since that was the only language Peig spoke, but this translation in English is available.

If you want a glimpse of an Ireland now long gone (and it really is long gone, despite what anyone might tell you), you can't go wrong with Peig. Just make sure you have a good supply of prozac close to hand.
