Although I live in Charleston WV, I find myself going to hike in Maryland a lot, and this book is the best of the guides I've found. You can tell by the descriptions that the author has actually hiked all of the places he sends you to (the book cover says he uses a surveyor's measure wheel to get accurate distances). When I'm alone, I look for some of the more rugged hikes he describes; when with family we look for some of the easy 1-2 hour trips.
What I really like is the book provides a lot of background information on the area you will be hiking in--history, plants, animals, and not just telling where they are but lots of tidbits about plant and animal life.
Get this book and you will find some great places to enjoy the outdoors and the reasons as to why you are enjoying it so much.

I live in neighboring wv and am happy to finally see a good guide to MD. I travel there often and was becoming frustrated about not being able to find good hiking information. This book is it--better than any other I've used and full of wonderful background information on the places it directs you to. Hikes range from easy jaunts suitable for families with children to some good overnighters.

What a great book. I've lived next door to Maryland all of my life and never realized all of the wonderful outdoor opportunities it has. This book brought me to many different places, from beach walks to mountain treks, from isolated locales to hidden spots near Baltimore and DC. What I really liked, though, is that it is much more than a "here's a hike and here's how to get to it" book. The author provides dozens of bits of inofrmation on the human and natural history of the areas you hike through--and does it in an entertaining and enjoyable style of writing. Thanks to him, I now have a complete year's worth of hikes to look forward to.

The book is excellent for getting you to and around many good hikes in Maryland. It is an excellent resource for those of us you love the outdoors but live near the B-W corridor.

Funny, I believe the reviewer below has not read the book. Yes, "Revolutionary Approach" is marketing-speak, but the book itself is rooted in the very principles of the masters he mentions. Michelangelo & Degas are used as great examples.

It's not an easy book to digest, but neither are the principles he espouses. Nevertheless, my drawing has become much better because of it, and for the first time I'm actually learning to THINK about drawings & the body.

Highly recommended.

another "gimmick" book, Take out a bank loan and buy it........2004-05-23

MacMullan's text is based upon the inferrence that some "revolution" or other is needed in FIGURE DRAWING. Actually, it's one more sad example of an author relying upon some gimmick wording to push sales. Pushing Sales is one thing, and teaching drawing is another.

This gimmick is just one more promising to RE-INVENT-THE-WHEEL, as though drawing like Raphael, or Leonardo da Vinci, or Rembrandt were not good enough; or more to the point, LEARNING-TO-DRAW like a master were suddenly in need of revolutionary....WHITER-&-BRIGHTER wonder chemical "X37" or some such silliness.

The Book costs...THIRTY-FIVE DOLLARS? May I suggest "RIP-OFF" here?

The Book Is great...........2002-12-04

as a companion to McMullans class at SVA, which I have done. It is also a great tool on the proper way to draw figure. The book instructs the reader how to see the life flowing through the pose...as much as yoda as that sounds. Starting with a shoe and then a plant. It also instructs how the artist should sit and view the model. Rember there is no real subsitute for the actual class and no book is going to make you great.

Personally I have had my differences with Mr McMullan and could go as far as sayign no I don't like him BUT the book is a great tool, as "a reader" stated. One last thing if Mr. Gargan feels that "I doubt if any artist would find this of much value" then please explain why the classes at The School Of Visual Arts in NYC are always packed and turn out people who en up working for disney?

Well, I turn to this book for inspiration to remember what life drawing's all about! It touches on a very important essence about life drawing most other books don't: the natural rhythm of the human form and the ability to "catch" it, and translate it on to the page. The ability to successfuly make true LIFE drawings: making the images come to life. It is the difference between being just a very good draftsman (being able to render forms faithfully with no emotion/life essence) to being an artist. I wouldn't get this book if I only had to get a single ONE on figure drawing, but its something to supplement other (figure) drawing books.

I always enjoy a good mystery, but this book offered more. Debs Kafka is a professor of Criminal Justice, yet yearns to play professional baseball. Triggered by the murder of a priest, this San Francisco plot swept me away in a whirlwind of criminology, romance, University politics, and baseball trivia, all entwined with the threads of scandal facing the Catholic Church today. A good read! I hope to see more of Debs Kafka on the bookshelves soon.

Having been a fan of Rob Elias's non-fiction works, I was eager to see how he would fare in his initial foray into the world of murder mystery novels. Set in and about the San Francisco Bay area, from the first chapter on it is clear that Professor Elias and his protagonist Debs Kafka have hit a homerun. This whodunit has something for everyone- religion (specifically Catholicism), baseball, and higher education. Could anything be more timely? The result is a wonderfully engrosssing story that keeps the reader guessing throughout and has a climax that will literally blow you away. Let's hope that the bookcover's notation that this is a "Debs Kafka Mystery" means that we can look forward to more from Mssrs. Elias and Kafka in the future.

Deciding What You Want to Be When You Grow Up is a Bitch.......2005-04-24

OK, so you were afraid to get out of school and go face the real world. So you stayed in school. Now you're about to get your Ph.D. and all of a sudden you realize that the world of academia sucks (it really does).

At the same time, your girl friend has told you to kiss-off, and with no good-bye kiss. Then your major professor (and priest) gets murdered. (You know what's been happening with priests and little boys.) So you get a chance to start over, you take a chance and get a shot at your childhood dream, professional baseball.

Then you learn that the killer is now threatening to kill the star pitcher. Even worse, this dastardly fellow is planning this evil crime right in the final days of a tight pennant race. Can you imagine such a thing?

Well, it's certainly a good thing that your Ph.D. is (about to be) in criminology. Guess what happens now....

A fascinating look inside the chinese mindset. A must read for anyone who wants to know about the crazy history of the Red Guard, the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. Also provides a great insight into how the chinese operate today. Fan Shen tells a story that will stick with you as you purchase your next "made in China" item.

I spent about 8 months reading Dr. Shen's book -- not because it bored me, and not because it was overly long. This is just one of those books that needs to be savored in order to be properly enjoyed. It's also one of those books that you really don't want to finish.

Almost Unbelieveable.......2007-04-27

This is the story of a boy who, from a revolutionary family, eagerly joins the Red Guards at the outset of the Cultural Revolution. As Fan Shen comes of age, he realizes that the Cultural Revolution is a disaster and this book is the story of his attempt to find a way to achieve an acceptable life.

It is readily apparent that Fan is a very clever fellow as well as an intellectually gifted individual. The tales that he recounts are alternatively horrifying, sad, depressing and humorous. As he tells of his experiences, the reader can only imagine the horrors of the Cultural Revolution when you multiply his experiences by the 800 million or so others who lived through the same era.

Fan is a wonderful author and can tell a story exceedingly well. At times, however, the reader is left wondering whether we are actually getting an accurate recounting of Fan's earlier years. The stories he tells are truly beyond belief and, at times, seem to be a bit self-serving. Whether or not this is the case, the book deserves a read by anyone interested in China today or in recent Chinese history.

Dr. Shen is a teacher at the college in MN I attended. It was amazing to read about the life of one of the smartest, kindest people you will ever meet. He isn't an easy teacher, but when you finish your master's degree in a year and a half and your PHD in five years what else would you expect. If you want to read a true story that will leave you in amazed this is book that you will want to pick up. But don't just take my word for it, read it for yourself.

After reading this remarkable memoir, I had the great opportunity to hear the author speak, and meet him afterwards. The story is well-told, and I especially enjoyed his technique of substituting nicknames for most characters, as it made the tale far easier to follow, from this Westerner's perspective. All in all, a finely written, dramatic, and at times horrific account of the Cultural Revolution. It deserves to be widely read.

The Attorney General is honest in sharing his Christian worldview and how it shapes his decisions. He takes readers through a chronology of his life, however he doesn't spend a lot of time on details. What he does is highlight the major impact his dad had on his life. A significant amount of the book discusses the principles he learned from his dad and how he applied them to his own life. This intangible legacy, the legacy of Christian faith is one that has cause him to say he cares more about his eternal reputation rather than his place in history (which is temporal). There are some mundane matters his dad passed on to him as well, such as suggesting that he always dress for a position above the one he currently held to create the proper image. Overall this book provides an insight into the thinking of the author.

I probably shouldn't publicly criticize the neo-J Edgar Hoover, but what the heck, I'm feeling brave! (kinda, since I clicked the anonymous button on my review!) This purpose of this review is to spark debate about the fusion of Jerry Falwell and J Edgar Hoover (as Julian Bond so eloquently put it), aka John Ashcroft. Scientists have successfully bonded religious fanaticism with Orwellian tactics. The result is our attny. general. A man who speaks at Bob Jones University, praising their "values" (segregation, racism, and general intolerance). Now don't get me wrong, he is allowed to believe whatever he wants to believe, he has that right as a citizen of the United States. But, his beliefs make him extremely bias, therefore should not be allowed to hold a position that requires TOTAL neutrality. (I know, Reno wasn't a star either in regards to Waco and Ruby Ridge, and the other Clinton DoJ foul ups). But the new DoJ is 10x worse. One of the most important (if not the most important) positions of power is that of Attorney General. This person holds OUR civil liberties in their hands, they are entrusted not to abuse the power given to them. Ashcroft has abused those powers. It may not seem like it right now, but history will look back on Ashcroft's actions and label him as a tyrant. What is scary is that he thinks he is right, that he has direct contact with God, and that he does God's bidding ... . Keep in mind that Ashcroft and Bin Laden are one in the same, both give their respective religions a bad name. Some non-Christian may hear Ashcroft spitting gross intolerances towards other cultures and think that all Christians are like him. Just as we see Bin Laden murder innocent civilians in the name of Islam, we think all Muslims are blood thirsty psychos. To those who share Ashcroft's beliefs, sorry to offend you, but people with your beliefs have no place in public service. As a free country we must keep zealots out of government. People with extreme (be it left of right) views have no right to dictate extreme policy to a public that is mostly moderate. That is called tyranny of the minority. Democracy rests on the principal of tyranny of the majority.

Excellent Insight.......2002-08-16

I could not put this book down! I found this book to be a fascinating insight into the U.S. Attorney General.

The book lets the reader see how John Ashcroft's life was shaped by his father and his own personal faith. In light of the United State's war on terrorism, I found it very comforting to learn that Ashcroft, one of America's leaders in that war, is grounded on a foundation of ethics, morals, and integrity.

I didn't know much about Run until reading this memoir. He let's you know that all your dreams can come true, and that you have to help God help you. He tells how the group was up one day and down the next, and that you should always have a backup plan. This book is for anyone who needs encouragement through any circumstances.

I could not put this extraordinary book down because it is filled with Universal Laws to improve the quality of life. I did not know what to expect when I selected this book, but I have been pleasantly reminded by someone whose career and life has gone through life's changes about God's goodness. Rev. Run did an excellent job of putting these spiritual truths in a manner that can be followed easily to change the tides of one's fortunes.

This was an excellent piece that won't be soon forgotten.

RUN-DMC were truly the movers and shakers of the rap industry during the 1980's. Then suddenly, their fame slipped through the hands like grains of sand. Joseph Simmons (RUN) was a victim of his own fame and success. Thank goodness he was able to find help by way of religion and now see himself as a spiritual to help other young artist see through his mistakes.

I found this book to be a very accurate and down-to-earth account of Rev. Run's life. I have always been a big fan of Run D.M.C.'s music, and I was always curious about the man behind the music. Although Rev. Run seems to have fallen on hard times, his faith in God and how he shares it with us in this book should be applauded and shows that God will bring you back from anywhere. I also found that the self-help tips keep it real. I believe this book is a hip-hop jewel.
