      Book Description

The practice of medicine has changed greatly since the time of Hippocrates in 400 b.c., but the work of doctors and nurses has always been to alleviate suffering. This colorful, informative book explores the world of medical history, spanning the time from Roman physicians to modern-day surgeons, from Native American healers to district nurses. The colorful reenactments photographed especially for this book bring medical history to vivid life: a barber-surgeon from 1450 extracts a tooth, an Elizabethan housewife grinds medicinal herbs to treat wounds, a general practitioner from 1965 listens to her young patient's heart. Readers will learn about the long-used practice of bloodletting, the work of apothecaries and barber-surgeons, the development of anesthesia and vaccinations, the practice of quarantine to stop the spread of diseases, improvements in medical equipment, and much more. Filled with graphic details, this book is sure to be a hit with both science and history buffs. An excellent resource for browsing or doing research, A Doctor's Life also features a comprehensive time line and an index, a glossary of medical terms, and a list of places to visit. No library reference collection or classroom should be without it. Dr. Rod Storring is a consulting physician in London. He collaborated on this book with his eleven-year-old daughter, Nicola, who also hopes to become a doctor.

4 out of 5 stars A Neat and Visually Appealing Book.......2003-02-13

A Doctor's Life chronicles in a very brief sense the evolution of medicine from Roman doctors in 50 A.D. to modern surgeons. The subtitle of the book is A Visual History of Doctors and Nurses Through the Ages, and this is perhaps a more apt description of the book. Every page is filled with large color photos of people dressed in authentic clothing and/or various items of medicine and medical tools used throughout history. It focuses solely on western medicine except for two pages devoted to Native American medicine men. In the back, there is a glossary of some medical terms and a timeline of pertinent events in medical history. This book is too large to fit on a conventional book shelf, and it only numbers 48 pages. It would make a good coffee table book. Because of its brevity, it does not go into the greatest detail in the periods it describes. One can easily read tough the book in one sitting. The greatest benefit is the wealth of pictures. Along with the pictures, the short descriptions in each section give the reader a sense of what medicine was and how it was practiced through the ages.

      Book Description

The complexity and variety of sixteenth-century Netherlandish art endow it with a particular dynamism. It was in the sixteenth century that drawing attained an independent status as an art in itself, distinct from painting; landscape increasingly became a separate genre; and artists consciously referred to the great masters of the past, showing the tremendous influence of Italian art in their own works. This volume documents the unique qualities of the art of drawing during the age of Bruegel. Designed to accompany an exhibition at the National Gallery of Art and The Pierpont Morgan Library, the book is also an invaluable scholarly record. In addition to 123 catalogue entries and more than 350 reproductions of rarely-seen drawings, three in-depth essays contain discussions of the art of the period. Its development is traced from a late medieval style at the end of the fifteenth century to the influence of the Italian Renaissance and mannerism in the 1500s, and ultimately to the beginning of the baroque period in the early 1600s. The detailed entries encompass works by sixty-two artists, including Hieronymus Bosch, Jan Gossaert, Lucas van Leyden, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Karel van Mander, and others. The book will interest specialists and also general readers attracted by the warmth of Netherlandish art.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Little Book on the Care of Tokay Geckos........2001-12-16

The Herpetocultural Library is a series of small, inexpensive books dedicated to educating the public on the proper care and reproduction of selected reptiles and amphibians in captivity. The series founder is Phillippe de Vosjoli, and he has authored many in the series, and has recruited the services of other distinguished authors who have particular experience with particular animals. This book is an example of his utilization of two knowledgeable gecko enthuisiasts. The book is small, with 60 pages in total, but richly illustrated and full of useful and fascinating information, on selected members of the Gekkonidae, specifically the members of the genus Gekko, Ptychozoon, and Cyrtodactylus that are commonly imported via the pet trade in the USA. Specifically, the tokay gecko, Gekko gecko, is covered in great detail. The authors do a fantastic job in circumlocuting the information on care, feeding, housing, medecine, reproduction, natural history, and even folklore on these fascinating lizards. It is a must for any gecko pet keeper and enthuisiast. These wonderful animals deserve the best care in captivity, and this book gives a step by step guide to achieving this goal.

I return over and over again to use this manual when I have husbandry questions about tokays. The most useful section is Breeding.

Husbandry information on other related gekko subspecies are covered in this manual including the Golden Gecko (G. ulikovskii), White-lined gecko(Gekko vittatus),the Flying gecko (Ptychozoon kuhlii)and others.

The Introduction, General Information, and Ethnoherpetology sections contain some of the most interesting reptile reading ever.

            5 out of 5 stars It Rocks!!!.......1998-07-24

It is a verry good book in "The Herpetocultural Library" series, it has lots of information, full color pictures and specific information on many species, it basically tells you everything you need to know to raise healthy and happy day geckos.

I've taken many, many books out of the library on ponds and water features. This is by far the best. For me the test of a truly great gardening book is whether or not I feel I HAVE to have it in my home library. This is a definate HAVE TO HAVE IT! It covers small water features on up to larger ponds and streams. It has suggestions, clear directions, many pictures and a plant reference section. It tells you how to make a bog garden separate from your pond, how to make a shishi-odoshi (Japanese deer scarer), a tsukubai (Japanese spill basin) among many, many other things. If you only have room for one book on water gardening this is the one to have! Judy

                Book Description

This study of the life and milieu of a statesman, utilizing a wide array of hitherto unused chronicle and documentary material, offers new insights into many aspects of Ottoman eighteenth-century society. Subjects touched upon include career development and patronage in the central bureaucracy, increasing knowledge and interest in European diplomacy, and the impact of war on traditional attitudes. Of particular interest is the section on the 1768-74 Russo-Turkish War, a traumatic awakening for the Ottomans, who yielded significant territory, but were also faced with the necessity of reconstructing a polity and ideology which no longer produced results on the battlefield. Ahmed Resmi was the first of a new generation of statesmen who saw real virtue in the rationalization of war and the need for peace within prescribed borders.

Chinese Cinderella is the perfect title for Adeline Yen Mah's compelling autobiography in which, like the fairy-tale maiden, her childhood was ruled by a cruel stepmother. "Fifth Younger Sister" or "Wu Mei," as Yen Mah was called, is only an infant when her father remarries after her mother's death. As the youngest of her five siblings, Wu Mei suffers the worst at the hands of her stepmother Niang. She is denied carfare, frequently forgotten at school at the end of the day, and whipped for daring to attend a classmate's birthday party against Niang's wishes. Her father even forgets the spelling of her name when filling out her school enrollment record. In her loneliness, Wu Mei turns to books for company: "I was alone with my beloved books. What bliss! To be left in peace with Cordelia, Regan, Gonoril, and Lear himself--characters more real than my family... What happiness! What comfort!" Even though Wu Mei is repeatedly moved up to grades above those of her peers, it is only when she wins an international play-writing contest in high school that her father finally takes notice and grants her wish to attend college in England. Despite her parent's heartbreaking neglect, she eventually becomes a doctor and realizes her dream of being a writer.

Teens, with their passionate convictions and strong sense of fair play, will be immediately enveloped in the gross injustice of Adeline Yen Mah's story. A complete glossary, historical notes on the state of Chinese society and politics during Yen Mah's childhood, and the legend of the original Chinese Cinderella round out this stirring testimony to the strength of human character and the power of education. Book Description

A riveting memoir of a girl's painful coming-of-age in a wealthy Chinese family during the 1940s.

A Chinese proverb says, "Falling leaves return to their roots." In Chinese Cinderella, Adeline Yen Mah returns to her roots to tell the story of her painful childhood and her ultimate triumph and courage in the face of despair. Adeline's affluent, powerful family considers her bad luck after her mother dies giving birth to her. Life does not get any easier when her father remarries. She and her siblings are subjected to the disdain of her stepmother, while her stepbrother and stepsister are spoiled. Although Adeline wins prizes at school, they are not enough to compensate for what she really yearns for -- the love and understanding of her family.

Following the success of the critically acclaimed adult bestseller Falling Leaves, this memoir is a moving telling of the classic Cinderella story, with Adeline Yen Mah providing her own courageous voice.

4 out of 5 stars Was it that bad?.......2007-07-24

This is a better written book than Falling Leaves, the author's first book. It detailed the childhood of the unwanted daughter with better mix of "good and bad" and less bitterness came through the book.

While I shared the pain of being rejected and unaccepted by her parents, the author should appreciate and be thankful of what she had....loving Grandparents, Aunt Baba and good education which was the foundation of her success.

Think about tens and thousands of unwanted daughters in China who are abandoned by their parents daily.....they don't know who their parents are and have no sightline of their basic needs. The chance of being sent to prestige schools and study oversea is nil...I bet those unwanted daughters will trade the author's place at a heartbeat.

5 out of 5 stars I could not put it down.......2007-07-02

I simply could not put this book down. I was absorbed the entire time. A story of miraculous courage and triumph, it reminds its readers that the love of human relationships is essential in this life, for without it one does not have much. I am excited to order it as a classroom novel for my 7th grade reading class!!! It is truly worth one's time.

                  5 out of 5 stars Chinese Cinderella.......2007-05-19

Have you ever felt like you were unwanted? Have you have felt hated like nobody likes or wants you? Well if you know this felling you would have close ties to this book. Also for the record Adeline Yen Mah has felt like that since she was born. So I haven't thought that it couldn't get worse because it really can get worse.
The book is a biography of her life while she was in China. The book covers most of her life but it is more of her childhood not her most recent life. It describes the sadness that Adeline has been through. It in the first chapter It says everyone hated her because three days after she was born her mother came down with a high fever and died two weeks after she was born. So she never got to now her real mother. Her father remarries and all his children didn't like her but they were forced to call her niang (which in Chinese means mother) which none of them think of her as their real mother they all didn't like her. Her stepmother always abused her and never liked her she only liked the kids that she had gave life to. So she always abused her younger and older siblings.
I actually could compare this book a little to my own life. I haven't felt as unwanted or as hated as she has. I also haven't been abused like she has. I haven't actually really been abused all that much. But I have felt unwanted before. I haven't been abused like had been I haven't ever been abused that much.
Over all I would give this book a 10 out of 10. It only has 200 pages altogether so it won't take you a very long time. It is a very good read. It would take you maybe a weekend or two to read it. That is why I gave it a 10 out of 10.
I would recommend this book to anyone but it would be more of an adult book. It has way too much sadness for a young child. Also if it for an adult one of them people that are always happy and peppy and think that nothing can ever happen too them. It will be a real eye opener because they will realize it could really happen to them. So then they won't be going around saying "my life can't get any worse".

5 out of 5 stars Great book for a pre-teen.......2007-04-24

I picked up this book the other week for my 12-year-old daughter after browsing thru the bookstores for something outta the norm for her. I bought it solely on the back-cover synopsis -- mine being an only child and doted on for the most part. I kind of expected her to glance at the cover and half-heartedly browse thru it. I was so wrong! She read it in a few days! She's always been into books -- but of her own choosing: Harry Potter and/or Lemony Snickett, fantasies and the like. After she put it down each night, she would tell me a bit about what she just read. Believe me, she's NEVER done that before. She said it truly was a cinderella story, and wondered why no one would help the little girl more. She showed alot of empathy for Adeline as a child. What I think I'm trying to convey is that it is a book written to touch the soul of the young reader -- something the author succeeded so well at.

                  4 out of 5 stars Amazing Efforts.......2007-03-29

I strongly recommend the book Chinese Cinderella to people who do not mind a book that might make them cry. This book was a page-turner because while reading it, you just have to find out what happens next. Anyone with a strong heart will enjoy this book because it is so amazing what this little girl went through. While reading this book, there were some parts I felt like I was about to break down and cry, but there were others where I wanted to meet Adeline Yen Mah and congratulate her for her amazing efforts.

                      Book Description

Women in the fight for Ireland’s independence risked loss of life and family for their cause. Here are the biographies of sixty-five women activists, along with lists of those imprisoned after the 1916 Rising and the more than seven hundred women arrested during the Irish Civil War. They came from every class in society—titled ladies, shop assistants, doctors, housewives, laundry workers, artists, and teachers. Some were married with children, others widowed, and some were mere schoolgirls.
Using historical records, interviews with survivors and their families, and the women’s own prison diaries, memorabilia, and writings, Sinéad McCoole vividly recreates the characters, personalities, and courage of these extraordinary women, many of whom served time in Ireland’s most notorious prison, Kilmainham Gaol.

I have yet to read the whole book, but what I have seen so far looks to be an exciting resource on a much neglected subject. The bios are excellent. I will critique the rest when I have a chance.
