good information, but.................2001-04-05

the information gained by reading this book is very good, and should be useful for anyone living in or visiting Sweden for a long time. It will be somewhat useful for my proposed short trip this summer, particularly since my partner will be involved in academic issues and a conference during our trip. I suspect there is a better book to prepare for a short visit, but I haven't found it yet.

Some parts of the Swedish character as portrayed ring *very true*, especially the idea that they have the best way figured out. I've seen that my whole life with my relatives who are first generation American from Sweden, and it even persists into the second generation. (but maybe that's me too! :-) )

The writing style strikes me as being written for a simpleton. I can't figure out why, since the vocabulary is not excessively limited. The reading level may be lower than that to which I am accustomed, but I'm not even sure if that's it. Maybe the author is out of practice with English, and she is from Britain, making the style seem stilted to my US ear? I read a lot, so that doesn't seem possible either....

It is, none-the-less, a worthwhile read and is inspiring me to get going on the rest of my Sweden research!

Swedish Culture Shock!.......2001-01-04

I have had many Swedish friends during college, and I've been to Sweden twice. This book has proven itself a very good resource book, and an fun read. It helped me a lot to understand the dos and don'ts when interacting with Swedish people. I highly recommend this book : )

A Must Buy!.......2000-09-29

A very accurate description of what to expect, what to do (swedish etiquitte), how to act and assimilate gracefuly into a deliteful culture. This book prepares your mind to be watchful of all the intricacies that make Sweden a unique and fascinating place. Without having read this book in advance of my arrival in Sweden, the Swedish details might have escaped my notice. This book is a definite buy - well written and very accurate.

Hey everyone. I'm going to be an exchange student, leaving for Sweden on July 31, 2000, and coming back sometime in June/July 2001. I recently bought this book and loved it. It's got everything you need to know about staying in a counrty for a long period of time, it gives you histroy of the cournty, laws, things you never thought about bringing, and what not to bring, what the people are like, just an amazing wealth of knowledge. If your going to be spending time in Sweden, this is an awesome book to read.

Early in his career, Belgian painter James Ensor (1860-1949) broke away from Impressionism, rejecting its prettiness in favor of an original, highly dramatic style. Incorporating elements of satire, caricature, masquerade, and the grotesque, Ensor was a sharp observer of his social and political milieu and a skilled controversialist. Bridging the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and not easily fitting into one particular movement or group, his drawings are increasingly valued for their innovative subjects and techniques, as well as the strong social criticism at their heart.

This volume, published to accompany the first major New York exhibition of Ensor's drawings, includes more than one hundred plates, most of them in color. Essays by Susan M. Canning (College of New Rochelle), Marcel De Maeyer (University of Ghent), and Robert Hoozee (Museum of Fine Arts, Ghent), along with a chronology by Xavier Tricot, serve to place Ensor's drawings in the context of both artistic and historical developments of his time and his oeuvre.

Wonderful stories of animal psychic abilities.......2001-04-04

The most amazing story was about a dog named Hector who lived with his master aboard the Dutch freighter S.S. Simaloer. When the Simaloer was in port at Vancouver Hector debarked to take a stroll through town as was his custom. Coming back much later than usual he found the ship gone; it had left for Japan. Four ships at the Vancouver port reported that they had seen a terrier come on their ship, sniff around, and then leave. Hector was later found as a stowaway on the S.S. Hanley. Nineteen days later, as the Hanley entered the port of Tokyo, Hector became very excited. As the Hanley was unloading its cargo a sampan from the Simaloer was sailing by, and Hector jumped into the water, swam to the sampan, and was hauled into the arms of his master. Of the four ships Hector entered in Vancouver, he picked the right ship going to Japan and traveled 5,000 miles to find his master.

This book is full of such incredible stories of the bond between animals and their human companions.

An actual Irishman, (not an American pretending to be informed).......2006-06-07

The first problem with the two previous reviews is that they make no distinction between Loyalist (Protestant) and Republican (Catholic) Irishmen so claiming this book to be an account of "the unbelieavable atrocities the English purpetrated on the Irish people" or "The actions taken by armed mercenaries, English military, and English puppet police against the Irish people" or even "Anyone interested in understanding the mindset of Irishmen" is clearly wrong. This is the account of the Southern, Republican Irish on the events that took place and should not be accepted as Ireland's (as a whole) views as Protestant Northern Irish are loyal to Britain, not Ireland. Reading reviews on the books about the troubles it is striking how from people's locations and surnames they seem to have no link whatsoever to Ireland yet claim this book is the definitive account without any other evidence!!! Look into the situation for yourself. Who's asking for control of more land? That answer alone should tell you who the real aggressors are. The comment that this book "brings to mind Hitler's treatment of the Jews in Europe twenty years later" is one of the most absurd things I have ever heard. You're telling me that about 10million people were exterminated!?!? To this day Irelands population isn't close on that so I STRONGLY suggest you check your obscenely inaccurate views before posting a review that incredibly 8/12 people found useful!!!???!!! It is truly disgusting how World War II gets banded about as an example whenever an injustice occurs, you are souring the memory of those who truly had probably the worst human injustice ever done to any human beings. British rule of Ireland vs. Hitler's Nazi Germany. Only a fool would try to compare them. The main aim of this review is purely for people to understand this is a Southern, Republican Irish view on British actions in Ireland (therefore not taking into account Loyalist Irish views) and I will leave it to you to decide whether this account MAY have bias.

The standard work on guerrilla warfare for the last century........2001-07-10

The incredible career of Tom Barry and that of the West Cork Flying Column is an inspirational example of what virtually untrained volunteers fighting for their families and their country can achieve, even in the face of overwhelming odds. The British had over 12,500 men in West Cork chasing after about 310 IRA Volunteers...and never defeated them. Barry discusses many military topics and personal thoughts which the student of Irish warrior traditions will find extremely helpful. Members of many guerrilla movements around the world have read and profited from the lessons in this book including Che Guevera (whose last name was "Lynch" thanks to his Irish grandfather) and the early Jewish guerrillas in the Irgun and Lehi. Anyone interested in understanding the mindset of Irishmen bent on taking a stance and fighting for what they believe in, will be well rewarded for reading this book.

A must read for Irish historians.......1999-08-23

This on the scene writer grimly reveals the unbelieavable atrocities the English purpetrated on the Irish people in this century. This book is a beginning to the understanding of the relations between the English and the Irish. The actions taken by armed mercenaries, English military, and English puppet police against the Irish people in their own country is appalling and brings to mind Hitler's treatment of the Jews in Europe twenty years later. A must read for all who seek an understanding to the Anglo/Irish situation.
