This travel book was a bit disappointing, I bought this book because it was the most recently published book on travel in Sri Lanka. It is a great book if you plan to only go to the beach and Colombo. It has very little information on the interior of the country. For a more well rounded book I would get the lonely planet guide instead.

A lucky find.......2005-09-01

I literally stumbled over this book in a local bookstore while searching for another drawing book, and bought this one instead. This is a good book for anyone, at any stage in of learning, as eveything in the book will present itself eventually as you continue to learn drawing. It's not a wealth of info on one subject, but rather a page or two dedicated to explaining the process and then showing an example. If you want to learn to draw reflections on water, or how to draw glass or just get an idea of what you can accomplish, this is a great place to start.

As complete a reference as you can own in one cover, this book has it all. Cultural medium requirements, temperature, light - everything you need to know for the most species coverage. Most of the color plates are high quality, some not so good.

Superior illustrations.......2007-02-24

I'm fairly new to orchid zealotry (about 3 years), mostly as a result of friends dumping their distressed plants on me because of my inexplicable success bringing neglected orchids back to health and happiness.

I've branched out from safe orchids like paphs and phals to neofinetias, laelias, blc's, zygos, oncidiums, dendrobiums, and burragearas. Because I receive so many plants in their non-flowering state, it is practically impossible for me to determine certain species, particularly if they are hybrids. And because of my ignorance, I am sometimes unable to determine even simple species.

The Manual of Orchids helps me with the aforementioned problems by doing something that no other orchid book I've seen does: provide illustrations of the ENTIRE plant. Most books focus on zoom photos of the blooms at their peak. You almost never see orchid books that take the care to photograph the blooms within the context of the entire plant. Seeing the entire plant helps us newbies understand total plant anatomy, rather than focusing solely on flowers (which is, to be honest, like expecting someone to understand homo sapiens anatomy based solely on photos of the human face!).

The bibliography of the 1995 edition I borrowed from the library cites 7 sources for illustrations. All of them are excellent. I'm eager to see how the edition listed above improves with the addition of nearly 50 pages.

Very good but not fantastic.......2000-04-17

(Note, I would have given it 3 1/2 stars if that were an option.)

When I read the Book News and Book List blurbs that claim this book includes entries for "all orchid species, grexes, and cultivars" I had to write to note that that statement is utter nonsense. (I also note that they both suspiciously use the exact same words -- a publisher's press release perhaps?)

The short answer is that if you are a beginner, don't count on this book to teach you how to grow orchids. If you are more advanced, it's useful, but don't expect it to be the end all and be all of references. Realistically though, it may well be as complete a single reference as one will find. (Although I haven't done a very close comparison with the Manual of Cultivated Orchids, I have found entries here for plants not included in the latter, although at least that one purports only to include those in cultivation.)

The manual's coverage is very extensive, and probably does contain references to "all better-known species and a number of lesser known ones as well," but given that there are on the order of 25,000 orchid species and the hybrids run into the hundreds of thousands, the quoted statement is just plain silly. From my own experience, it makes no mention of several species orchids I just bought, which were by no means recently discovered/collected in the wilds of South America and India. Although it mentions two of the best known species of Chinese cymbidium, it doesn't mention a single cultivar, of which there are at least several very long established (for decades if not centuries), well-known examples.

Finally, the cultural notes are not unhelpful, but are very oversimplified and sketchy. (One, more obvious, example is that not all Masdevallias and Cymbidiums are cool growing, and it makes no mention at all of exceptions to the so-called rule.)

Exhaustive Reference on Orchids.......2003-12-04

A wonderful book printed over 30 years ago in 1965 is a favorite umong orchidphiles. Not even today's modern references with updated names compares to Hawkes tomb on orchids. Hawkes modern day work can be said to be comparable to the 1894 7th Ed. of B.S. Williams "The Orchid Growers Manual", which is even today a useful reference. While Hawkes Encyclopeadia of Cultivated Orchids is long out of print used copies are readily available and worth the cost.

Trolling Through the Orchid Species Wilderness.......2000-05-02

There are comparatively few books which could be said to provide a bench mark source for information across the range of New and Old World orchid species. Although A. D. Hawkes book was published in 1965, it remains one of the best references available to orchid collectors.

Although the entries for each species are brief, they do provide all essential information, including plant and flower descriptions, regional distribution, habitat requirements and synonyms.

There are photographs and line drawings of only a few of the species described in the text, but space limitations probably required such a decision if the work was to be contained in a single volume. There is of course Hawkes' companion volume of illustrated orchid species to supplement this encyclopaedia.

While events have overtaken some of the entries, due to taxonomical revisions or mere name changes, this book remains one of the best single volume sources of information on orchid species available to collectors.

Frida Kahlo's diary has amplified my admiration for her. Her beautifully disturbing drawings and poetic words in this book are more than what I had expected. Though her handwriting is hard to read at times, the translations in the back are a big help. I shall cherish this book for a long time.

When I find out there was a book of all of Frida's actual writings and drawings from her diary, I was amazed! And this book totally fit all my expectations. It includes everything from her infamous red leather bound journal that she sought refuge in until the final moments of her life. You can actually see the ink from the next page leaking through the page before it, so you feel like your reading the actual thing. Its in big, bold, deep colors just how Frida liked it, and it translates and explains everything in english in a detailed and sufficient way. Definitely a MUST for all fans of the AWESOME Frida Kahlo =)

Exceptional reproduction of actual diary pages, in full.......2007-04-19

Enrique Torres' review is 100% accurate, so I just want to add a few additional comments.

The reproduction of the diary pages is nothing short of amazing - apparently scanned with a high quality scanner, or perhaps photographed digitally or with film and then digitized. The colors of both the writing and the images appear exceptionally accurate - Frida used many different colored pencils in her diary. Even penciled notations look like pencil, ballpoint ink looks like ink, and all pages are printed on high-quality semi-gloss paper.

The second half, which contains the English translations, also contains small black & white reproductions of each page translated and of each image described/explicated. Makes it easy to return to the first half and look at the original full-color page.

CAVEAT & RECOMMENDATION: The book I have is the 2005 hardback ed. published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc. I have not seen nor can I speak of any other published editions. I would buy this edition - the price is more than reasonable and the quality top-notch.

Interesting that Calderon now opens a space for a comprehensive display of Kahlo's works in the capitol city, considering the great differences in the politics they espouse so ardently. It is like Rockefeller hiring Diego Rivera for a mural in Manhattan, and scandalized sees Marx and Lenin within!

But such wonders are beyond me, and humbly and happily and gratefully let us receive this excellent facsimile with transcription and commentary of this diary maintained by Frida Kahlo in the final decade of her proud though tormented life. Carlos Fuentes, the famous Mexican novelist contributes one commentary, paired with an introduction by Kahlo scholar Sarah Lowe. Then follows a reporduction of each page of the diary, each page of which we see clearly from Kahlo's own hand, unlike the dubious and revisionist Reagan Diaries recently released. Following the diary pages, each page is then transcribed, commented and put into context very thoroughly. COmprehensive chronologies, bibliogrpahies and indices complete this excellent edition useful to any scholar or Frida fanatic.

Let me note that I received today the second edition, published in September of 2001, and that I have the Spanish edition, which I find more direct and useful than straining to peer through the dim gauze of someone else's transalation of Kahlo's own words. Highly recommended. Deeply and truthfully moving, as everything which falls from the hand of Frida.

Frida was more than an artist, she was a woman who knew what she wanted and how to get it. Her only downfall was that she had deep doubts inside her most inner self and shared it with very few.

I guess we all do, but she always wanted people to think she was though when in fact she was very fragile.

Nice set of prints of Kahlo's work.......1999-02-21

This set contains prints of "Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera", "Self-Portrait with Monkey", "The Suicide of Dorothy Hale", "Self-Portrait for Dr. Eloesser", "The Broken Pillar" and "Flag of Hope". I was surprized that the brief background/interpretations of the paintings are very different than those in the book also published by Taschen, "Andrea Kettenmann: Kahlo".
